Missing Purple Heart comes full circle, thanks to local veteran By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

It’s been 69 years and the day remains as crystal clear as if it happened yesterday. For Antioch resident John Trinca, a member of the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, it is a day he will never forget. “We were fighting in the Philippines, in Midanao,” he said. “A new guy joined our squad. The sergeant told me to keep an eye on him, so I told the new guy to stay on my left shoulder. I could tell he was scared…we were all scared.”

They moved down a path to the place where the Japanese had blown up the bridge. It was June 3, 1945, only months before Japan signed the surrender. “The sergeant told us to spread out, and told me to keep the new guy with me,” Trinca continued. “Bullets were flying and I saw a Japanese soldier on the ridge out of the corner of my eye. The sergeant told me to shoot him, so I did. He went down.” And Trinca thought that enemy soldier should have stayed down. The last bullet

was always a tracer and that showed the Japanese soldier their position. The shot he fired back missed Trinca, but there was a thud behind him. The new guy was down. It had all happened in a matter of minutes. “I looked and the new guy was down. I could tell he was gone. And I never knew his name,” Trinca lamented. “The sergeant called me “Chicago’ and when the new guy heard it, he told me that he was from Chicago too. Things were

tion locates lost or stolen military medals and returns them to veterans or their families. Purple Hearts Reunited donates a considerable amount of its personal time and finances to researching and locating the original recipient or family and conducts a “Return Ceremony” to reunite the veteran or family with the medal. To date, more than 100 returns have been conducted and the organization is working on 200 more. A home of honor is located for the medal, such as a military museum if no veteran or family can be found. You can find Purple Hearts Reunited on the web at http:// purpleheartsreunited.org/

World War II veteran and Antioch resident, SSgt. John G. Trinca, wipes tears from his eyes after addressing a gathering during the Purple Hearts Reunited and the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) joint ceremony at the Lake County Veterans Memorial on the campus of the College of Lake County, Grayslake on Aug 3. Offering support to Trinca is Thomas Bateman Jr., of Memphis, Tenn. The ceremony was held to return the lost purple heart medal to the family of Pvt. Thomas Bateman, who died in battle in the Philippines during World War II. Trinca stood next to Bateman when he was shot and killed. In the reunion nearly 70 years in the making, the medal was returned to the son of Pvt. Bateman, Thomas Bateman, Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., the fourth in a line of five Thomas Batemans. The first of these, Bateman’s great-grandfather, also died in battle. It happened at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862 during the Civil War.

Tom McAvoy, (from left) veteran and Antioch resident SSgt. John G. Trinca, and Thomas Bateman, Jr. await the beginning of the Purple Hearts Reunited and the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) joint ceremony at the Lake County Veterans Memorial on the campus of the College of Lake County, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake on Aug 3. The ceremony was held to return a lost Purple Heart medal to the family of Pvt. Thomas Bateman, who died in battle in the Philippines during the Second World War. McAvoy found the Purple Heart medal in Chicago in the early 1950s. He contacted the Purple Hearts Reunited organization to assist in finding the true owner of the medal. During the discovery process, SSgt. Trinca was located. Trinca was standing next to Pvt. Bateman when he was killed. Thomas Bateman, Jr., a Memphis, Tenn. resident, received the long-lost Purple Heart, along with his father’s many other medals, a reunion nearly 70 years in the making. Bateman is the fourth in a line of five Thomas Batemans. The first of these, Bateman’s great-grandfather, also died in battle. It happened at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862 during the Civil War.

moving so fast that I don’t even know if he told me his name.” The new guy never made it to the foxhole and Trinca spent the intervening years wondering who that man was. “I had seen guys killed all around me,” Trinca said. “But no one had died that close to me. That is something you never forget.” “When he went down,” he continued, “we called the medics. Those guys were amazing. They ran up there, bullets flying, and moved him. The medics came every time we called, no matter how fierce the battle was.” The years sped by and Trinca moved to Antioch and became neighbors with Colonel Paul J. Hettich. Trinka met Hettich’s mother, Mary Jane, during one of the Colonel’s deployments. “He was a great neighbor,” Mary Jane said. “In the winter, he’d shovel the snow, summer he’d mow the lawn.” And as time went on, they talked. Trinca talked about the man who died next to him, always wondering who

(Continued from front page)

he was. Mary Jane encouraged and then joined Trinca in his search. David Kaplan at the Lake Villa Library was also on the job. But the breakthrough came when Army Historian Wes Morrison called three years ago. “That soldier’s name was Thomas Batemen,” Trinca said, “and he was 26. I was 19 and in for about 10 months. He was in for more than a year. I was surprised.” Bateman was born in 1920 and was from Cook County, the son of Thomas and Anna Maude. He had two brothers, Oscar and Henry and two sisters, Ella and Frankie. Bateman had enlisted in the early 1940s and served with the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. The next piece of a puzzle fell into place when Zac Kike, founder of Purple Hearts Reunited, called Trinka to tell him that Bateman’s Purple Heart medal had been found in an attic in Chicago. A man named Tom McAvoy discovered Bateman’s medal in the early 1950s and held on to it. State Sen. Michael E. Hastings worked

with McAvoy and Purple Hearts Reunited to get that Purple Heart into the right hands. On Aug. 3, Bateman’s son, Thomas, and his family traveled from Memphis Tenn., to attend the medal return ceremony with Trinca. Purple Hearts Reunited and the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) sponsored the ceremony, which was held at the World War II Memorial at the College of Lake County. Some time ago Mary Ann had placed a brick at the memorial to honor Trinca’s service and had included one for the unknown soldier that died and left such a hole in Trinca’s heart. On Sunday, PVT. Bateman was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. His other decorations and awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 Campaign Star, WWII Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge.

New CLC exhibit features paintings by Chicago artist Esperanza Gama A new exhibit of paintings called Esperanza Gama: A Series of Memories, will be on display at the College of Lake County’s Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art from Aug. 14 to Sept. 28. An opening reception with refreshments and live music, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22 in the gallery. The Chicago-based artist was born and educated in Guadalajara, Mexico. Her drawings, paintings and installations have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the U.S. and Mexico. Gama’s works often depict important, historical Mexican women. These “artistic biographies” allow Gama to explore the historical and the inner lives of her subjects. “As an artist, biographies and autobiographies of important women throughout history always interested me,” Gama writes. “I am especially fascinated by the atmosphere in which these women lived and played a role, for example, in the visual arts, Judith Leyster, Louise Vigée Le Brun, Angelica Kauffman, and of course, me being of Mexican descent, Frida Kahlo

and Remedios Varo.” Gama’s piece “Frida” was displayed in a special exhibition in 2007 honoring the 100th anniversary of Frida Kahlo’s birth. In April 2006, Gama became the first Latina to exhibit at the Union League Club Gallery of Chicago. In 2008 her work was included in an exhibition called Catholicism in the City in the Chicago History Museum. Her work is also shown in and collected by the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago and was featured in “Signature Works,” a special 25th Anniversary Exhibition in 2013. Gama’s work is published in important surveys of Latino and Chicano art, such as Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art, 2002, and Chicano Art for our Millennium, 2004, both published by Arizona State University. She has received several awards and grants, including the Sor Juana Achievement Award for Visual Arts (2003, Chicago, National Museum of Mexican Arts), Illinois Arts Council Partial Support Grants (2005, Chicago) and an International Artists Residency Program Grant (Guadalajara, Mexico, 2007). Gama has lived and worked in Chicago since 1994.

The Wright Gallery of Art’s 2014-2015 exhibit calendar includes the following shows. Opening receptions are held on Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m. on the opening date. • 34th Annual Recent Works: A Juried Competition, Oct. 3 to Nov. 9, 2014 • CLC Art Faculty Exhibition, Nov. 14 to Dec. 14, 2014 • Members Exhibition, Jan. 16 to Feb. 22, 2015 • Deanna Krueger: Shimmer, Feb. 27 to April 5, 2015 • College of Lake County Student Art Competition, April 10 to May 16, 2015 • 20/20 Vision: Travels Along America’s Accidental Highway: May 22 to June 26, 2015 The Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art on the Grayslake campus is a project of the College of Lake County Foundation and is located at 19351 W. Washington St. For further information, contact Bob Lossmann at (847) 543-2436 or at com419@clcillinois.edu. Or visit http:// gallery.clcillinois.edu/. Lake County Sheriff’s Office raises the bar behind the bars Sheriff Mark C. Curran Jr. is proud to announce the Illinois Department of Corrections conducted their annual inspection of the Lake County Jail and not only did they recognize the jail as compliant, they also discussed improvements and policy changes implemented in the jail since the last inspection of 2013. On July 15, 2014, the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) conducted its annual inspection of the Lake County Jail. Illinois law requires IDOC to inspect each county jail annually and to make the results of inspections available for public review. The jail has a capacity of 740 inmates. The inspection date population was 610 inmates. There are 221 full-time employees assigned to jail responsibilities. As noted by the IDOC inspection, several improvements have been made. They include five new wheel chairs for detainee transport, two new restraint chairs, Aramark as the new

vendor for food services, all security staff carries OC spray, every shift conducts updated electronic security checks and Wexford Health Services began providing medical services on Feb. 1, 2014. Additionally, Sheriff Curran is announcing to the community through this release that on July 11, the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) accredited the Lake County Jail. The NCCHC has 35 essential standards and 33 are applicable to the Lake County Jail. One hundred percent of the applicable essential standards must be met in order to receive accreditation. The Lake County Jail is accredited through the American Correctional Association (ACA) for operational services and NCCHC for health care services. Also, on July 23, Sheriff Curran signed a contract to receive accreditation through CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies).

Nic Scandrett named College of Lake County Athletic Director The College of Lake County is pleased to announce the hiring of a new athletic director, Nic Scandrett of Story City, Ia. Scandrett has worked as assistant commissioner/ sports information director for the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference since 2007. He starts at the college on Aug. 13. In addition, he is associate executive director for the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association and basketball director for the Iowa Sports Foundation. Scandrett previously served as head varsity boys basketball coach and

head middle school boys track and field coach for the Gilbert Community School District in Gilbert, Ia. He holds a B.S. in health and human performance from Iowa State University and a Master’s of Business Leadership from William Penn University. As CLC director of athletics and physical activities, Scandrett will oversee 12 intercollegiate athletic teams that participate in the Illinois Skyway Athletic Conference of the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association. “I am elated to become a part of the team at CLC,”

Scandrett said. “The beautiful campus, location and strong tradition make it a wonderful place to be. However, I was most impressed by the people on campus, and that is what excites me the most. I look forward to building relationships and enhancing the overall educational experience for our students.” Student try outs for athletic teams (cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball are now being held. Christmas in August

Antioch Summer Day Camp counselors Jorden Vermeyen, left, and Jessie Greeany join with camper Kylie Wilson, 8, to do a dry run of the holiday season during the “Christmas in August” celebration at Aqua Center in Williams Park, 741 Main St., on Aug 1. The campers got to spend their “first” Christmas of the year under sunny blue skies and with temperatures in the 80s. After last year’s horrid winter, one can only hope that at least a few of the participants petitioned Santa for similar weather for Christmas 2014. The campers were treated to lifeguards and camp counselors decked out in Santa hats and antlers, as well as Christmas music played through the pool’s loudspeakers. For more information on other fun events and classes for both adults and youngsters or to find out more about the Aqua Center, contact Parks and Recreation at (847) 395-2160 or http://www.antioch.il.gov/parks.cfm.

Testing your well regularly is the only way to determine whether well water is safe to drink as many contaminants are colorless and odorless. Water from a public or municipal water system is regularly tested for contaminants regulated by Federal and state standards. Bacteria and chemicals can get into well water and contaminate it in different ways. Some bacteria and chemicals occur naturally. Contaminants such as nitrate can come from animal waste, wastewater, flooded sewers, polluted storm water runoff, fertilizers, agricultural runoff or decaying plants. High levels of nitrate in drinking water can cause illness in young children and pregnant women. Coliform bacteria are microbes found in the digestive systems of warm-blooded animals, in soil, on plants and in surface water. MCDH will test water from private wells for nuisance chemicals resulting in

water hardness, iron, discoloration and odor. Additional charges will apply. Sampling kits can be picked up at MCDH locations in Woodstock, Crystal Lake or at one of eight drop-off centers. Samples can be dropped off for testing on Tuesday mornings between 9 a.m. and noon at the following sites: • Algonquin Townships Office, 3702 Route 14, Crystal Lake, (847) 639-2329 • Dorr Township Office, 1039 Lake Avenue, Woodstock (815) 338-0125 • MCDH, 100 N Virginia Street, Crystal Lake IL (815) 459-5151 • McHenry Township Office, 3703 Richmond Road, McHenry (815) 385-5605 • Nunda Township Office, 3510 Bay Road, Crystal Lake (815) 459-4011 • City of Marengo, City Hall, 134 E. County Board Member Nick Sauer (District 17) is one of 40 emerging leaders from Illinois selected into the 2014 Edgar Fellow Program - An executive leadership-training program that aims to develop the leaders of tomorrow so they are prepared to solve our state’s future challenges. Next week, Sauer will travel to Urbana-Champaign to participate in an extensive and intense training program hosted by former Governor Jim Edgar and the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs. Sauer said, “I’m honored to have been nominated and accepted into this distinguished program. Our state and many communities face public policy challenges - from health care to public safety to budget issues. I am eager to learn from other knowledgeable and experienced leaders and put those skills into practice.” Fellows are chosen from a highly competitive pool of nominees - nearly 160 of them this year. Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor (District 18) was a 2012 Edgar Fellow. He was among those who sub-

mitted a nomination for Board Member Sauer. “This is a ‘roll up your sleeves and get to work’ kind of training where you interact and learn skills and techniques that truly help you become a better leader. I’m excited for Nick and I’m confident that he will get a lot out of the program,” Lawlor said.

County Board Member Sauer joins elite group of emerging Illinois leaders for training

Janet L. Agnoletti, Executive Director of the Barrington Area Council of Governments also nominated Member Sauer. She said, “Nick is the type of person we need in government, someone who carefully considers the consequences of government policy on communities and people. This program will add to his skill set, and I couldn’t be more pleased that Nick will be an Edgar Fellow this year.” The program, organized by IGPA’s Office of Public Leadership, is funded primarily by donations from a diverse group of individuals, organizations and companies interested in promoting competent and well-motivated leadership in Illinois. Women are encouraged to attend a Mammo Monday event on their own or bring their mothers, daughters, sisters and friends to a special, private setting to take control of their breast and bone health. Offerings include screening mammograms, bone density screenings, free expert bra fittings and light snacks. To

schedule an appointment, call (815) 334-5566. Upcoming Mammo Mondays will be offered at the following locations and times: • 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Centegra Hospital-McHenry • 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Centegra Health Center-Huntley • 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at Centegra Hospital-Woodstock In addition to the imaging technology already provided, Centegra Gavers Breast Center–Crystal Lake now offers tomosynthesis, also known as a 3-D mammogram. Ideal for

women with dense breasts, this new technology captures multiple images (slices) of the breast at different angles, providing 3-D reconstruction. The enriched view helps health care providers see if anything of concern is hiding behind overlapping tissue, providing women a greater peace of mind. The new technology was made possible by a generous gift from the Centegra Hospital-Woodstock Auxiliary, McHenry Country Club Ladies Association, Richmond Spring Grove Chamber of Commerce Women’s Network and many more to the Centegra Health System Foundation.

Things were

Purple Hearts Reunited donates a considerable amount of its personal time and finances to researching and locating the original recipient or family and conducts a “Return Ceremony” to reunite the veteran or family with the medal. To date, more than 100 returns have been conducted and the organization is working on 200 more.

Three Brothers Theatre brings Southern charm to Lake County Beth Henley’s Pulitzer Prize winning play, “Crimes of the Heart,” is at the Three Brothers Theatre through Aug. 9. This ensemble of local actors brings this award-winning black comedy to stage at 115 N. Genesee Street in Waukegan, Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. This tragicomedy takes place in Hazlehurst, Mississippi in 1974. Three estranged sisters reconnect after learning that the youngest, Babe, has been arrested for shooting her husband because she “didn’t like the way he looked” and their patriarch grandfather, who raised

the girls, is on his death bed. This heartwarming, riveting, and sometimes farcical play explores how sisters, no matter the situation, share a special bond. As the sisters’ secrets are revealed throughout “Crimes of the Heart,” so is the humor, the warmth and the brilliance of this poignant story. Recent University of Chicago graduate Eric Showmacher directs this powerful cast that includes Emily Jusino, Emilia Hodges, Michael Kreiser and Caitlin Robertson. “Crimes of the Heart” is part of the second season

for Three Brothers Theatre in downtown Waukegan. The season has a common thread, “Stories of the Silver Screen.” All the productions were either adapted for film or adapted from film. “Crimes of the Heart” was nominated for three Oscars for its 1986 film. Call (319) 621-0024 to reserve tickets or purchase at the box office. Visit Three Brothers Theatre online at 3brostheatre.com. For additional information contact: Caroline Beadle, Artistic Director, Three Brothers Theatre, (847) 406-0089, costabeadle@gmail.com.

Things were

Purple Hearts United established in 2012 By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Purple Hearts Reunited founder Zachariah Fike is no stranger to military life. He is currently a Captain in the Vermont Army National Guard and previously served in the military for 16 years with Combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He earned a Purple Heart on Sept. 11, 2010, in Afghanistan and is a Life Member of The Military Order of the Purple Heart. Fike comes from a long line of military tradition and patriots. His grandfather served in the Philippines. His father, a veteran of Vietnam, served 26 years in the Army and retired

as a Command Sergeant Major. His mother was one of the first female Drill Sergeants in the Army. Two of his uncles served in Vietnam and two served in WWII. Fike established Purple Hearts Reunited in 2012. This registered, non-profit founda-

tion locates lost or stolen military medals and returns them to veterans or their families.

Open house set for Pringle School Aug. 10 McHenry County Historical Society and members of the Wilson/Weyland Family of Marengo will host a free open house between 1 and 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10. Both sites, the 1867 limestone Pringle one-room schoolhouse and the pre-Civil War “Stewart’s Scottish Cemetery,” are located within a stone’s throw of each other near River Road and

Route 23. During the 1840s the land north of Marengo was settled by a number of pioneering families from Scotland. Many of these settlers came by way of Canada, traveled to Jo Daviess County to work in the lead mines, then reversed course back east to the Marengo area. They established farms along the southern edge of the hardwood for-

ests north of the Kishwaukee River and in time founded the First Presbyterian Church of Marengo. In January 1999 the historical society plaqued the church on its centennial. The historical society has owned Pringle School since 2002 and volunteers have undertaken its restoration and interpretation since then. This year a selection of artifacts,

unearthed on the school site between 2004-06 by Midwest Archeological Research Services, will be on display. They include a baseball bat, school supplies, a marble, coat hook and a beer bottle. Schools not only were a place students learned, they were an epicenter of community life. Those coming to the open house should park on the lawn in front of the school or on

the side street – not on River Road. If you visit the Scottish Cemetery, on the Ted Wilson farm at 20916 River Road just east of Route 23, wear comfortable walking shoes. A short hike from the parking area up a wooded path is required. The Wilson/Weyland families will have information about those buried there. The land was bought by

Alexander and Jane Stewart, who then deeded the land as a cemetery. It subsequently passed to their heirs, as well as John Wilson, Patterson and George Pringle, James Smith and others. The museum, located at 6422 Main St. in Union, also will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. that Sunday. For information call (815) 923-2267 or visit www.gothistory.org.

Franks announces upcoming bids for McHenry County road projects Following an exceptionally harsh winter that wrought havoc on already deteriorating local transportation infrastructure, state Rep. Jack D. Franks, D-Marengo, secured more than $33 million in capital funding to repair and enhance major arteries in the 63rd Representative District. “A critical factor inhibiting real economic recovery in Illinois is our crumbling infrastructure,” Franks said. “The job market in our state simply will not return to full health if our roads cannot accommodate a level of commercial activity commensurate with a dynamic, modern economy.” The Illinois Department of

Transportation has scheduled Aug. 1 bid receipts for the following projects: • $28,600,000 for reconstruction and widening of U.S. 14 between W. Lake Shore Dr. and Lucas Rd. in Woodstock and Crystal Lake. • $2,040,000 to resurface and improve U.S. 14/IL Rte. 173 between W. Brink St. and Alden Rd. in Harvard. • $1,105,000 to resurface IL Rte. 173 between County Line Rd. and Flat Iron Rd. in Dunham and Chemung Townships. • $940,000 to replace the structure carrying U.S. 14 over Lawrence Creek in Chemung Township.

• $730,000 to resurface U.S. 14 between Brink St. and IL Rte. 23 in Harvard. • $385,000 to resurface IL Rte. 120 between Green St. and Charles St. in McHenry. “These projects represent investments in the present and future success of McHenry County,” Franks continued. “They will put people to work now and make our community friendlier to the employers and entrepreneurs that we need to attract to make our local economy grow.” For more information, contact Rep. Franks’ full-time constituent service office at (815) 334-0063 or e-mail jack@jackfranks.org.

Bullying in the schools is a serious problem for our children. What do you think happens to these bullies when they leave the playground? They go to work. Roughly one-third of the workforce will experience bullying in the workplace, said panelists of “Rebel Without a Cause: Best Practices for Responding to Workplace Bullying,” at a recent Section of Labor and Employment Law Conference in Chicago. In fact, according to U.S. Dept. of Justice statistics, about two million violent crimes occur at work each year. McHenry County College

is committed to helping organizations to head off this serious issue by offering Preventing Workplace Bullying, a seminar from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 8, at the MCC Shah Center, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane in McHenry. The seminar is facilitated by Sheri Bland, trainer, strategic planner, coach and president of Sheri Bland Solutions. By definition, bullying is persistent, offensive, intimidating or insulting behavior that makes the recipient feel upset, threatened, humiliated or vulnerable. Without intervention, bullies generally do not accept responsibility for

their behavior; they are unable or unwilling to recognize the effect of their behavior on other people. Left unchecked, workplace bullying leads to increased stress, reduced productivity and harm to the physical and emotional well-being of staff members. The fee for this course is $109. To register, contact the MCC Registration Office at (815) 455-8588 and mention course ID: NTL C22 001. For more information, contact: McHenry County College Shah Center at (815) 455-8593 or send an e-mail to shahcenter@mchenry. edu.

Bragging rights! In a hotly contested Heritage Fair pie contest July 13, Jesse Garcia of Union emerged grand champion with this pecan pie – which featured chocolate and pretzels. Jesse, who is new to pie-baking, captured first in the “other” category. The remaining winners among the 15 entries were Jean Turner of Huntley, who finished first in both the fruit and berry categories; Eileen Lane, McHenry; Patty Johnson, Woodstock; Laurie Cisneros, Marengo; Jim Ratway, Woodstock; and Mary Argall, Union. Judges were Kathy Ferris, Laura Stricker and Dave Scranton. Garcia (right) is pictured with McHenry County Historical Society Administrator Kurt Begalka.

Black Box Theatre sets auditions for fall play The new Black Box Theatre at McHenry County College will host auditions for the fall production of “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani, and directed by Jay Geller. “On a cold clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are

bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend–almost–in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.” (Dramatic Play Services.) Auditions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 25 and 26, in the new Black Box Theatre. Callbacks will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28. A 2- to 3-minute contemporary dramatic or comedic monologue or a reading must be provided. Roles are available for five men and four

women, ages 18 to 30. Auditions are open to all students, faculty/staff and community members. Rehearsals will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. “Almost, Maine” will open on Thursday, Nov. 6, with performances on Nov. 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22. All performances will begin at 7 p.m. For more information, call Jay Geller at (815) 455-8746 or e-mail him at jgeller@ mchenry.edu.
