The Lakes Region Historical Society is located at 817 Main St., Antioch. “This is a magnificent display, she said while there. “It is a rare thing to see so many genuine items and in such pristine condition and wide variation. Michna is a retired health care therapist and loves
history. She has developed programs for 11 historical female figures including Helen Keller, Abigail Adams and three programs for Mary Todd Lincoln. It is important for her to see the actual clothing for various periods of history so she may keep her performances close to the character. And the Lakes Region Historical Society has more than 30 dresses on display at The Meeting House, located at 977 Main St. in Antioch, along with children’s clothing and accessories.

Museum director Ainsley Brooks Wonderling said that autograph books were popular but usually in the private

schools. The book on display has several pictures with one being of President Abraham Lincoln. Some of the shoes are made of silk, some of leather and all were made for feet much narrower than modern feet. The collection includes shoes for babies, children and adults and shoes for every day and ballroom dancing. Some of the dresses have ingenious shortcuts. One dress has two bodices and a detachable skirt that allowed the wearer to go from the daytime to evening events with relative ease. Another dress had sleeve extensions and a shawl that could be removed as the wearer moved from the banquet to the dance floor. The ball dress now had a lower neckline and shorter sleeves. Color was very important to those ladies. Chemists in Germany and France were busy developing new dyes. And while the colors may have been bright 160 years ago, the fibers and the dyes were made from all natural materials and some have faded. For years, only the royalty or very rich wore purple, since the dye was made from mollusk shells and was very expensive. A less expensive dye was discovered in 1856 by William
Henry Perkin by accident. Perkin, at age 18, was challenged by his professor, August Wilhelm von Hofmann, to synthesize quinine. In one attempt, Perkin oxidized aniline using potassium dichromate. The attempt yielded a black solid and appeared to be a failure. When Perkin cleaned the flask with alcohol, he noticed purple portions of the solution. Perkin patented the dye. It was originally called aniline purple or Tyrian purple, the name of ancient natural dye derived from mollusks and used by royalty. By 1859, it was called mauve in England and chemists later called it mauveine. The color came into vogue in 1851 when Queen Victoria wore a mauve gown. Another gown of Paris green is in the collection. Paris green was made with arsenic. At that time, the dye was stable, but Director Wonderling said to use caution, handle with care and wash your hands, since current stability is not known as the garments have aged. The exhibit will be shown until the end of August. The entrance fee is $5 and proceeds will be used to paint The Meeting House. The collection is on loan from a private collector. For more information call (847) 395-4912.

Antioch is Celebrating its fifth year of Charity Public Art programs with this year’s Reflections on the Chain. What is a Charity Public Art program? It’s a program comprised of artists, sponsors, art patrons and you - the public - who enjoy seeing unique art in a leisurely setting. After a summer season of enjoying these unique art pieces, they are all sold at a live auction and all the money is donated to local charities. This year 50 handcrafted Wooden Wall Mirrors are featured for Reflections on the Chain. These mirrors are scattered throughout Antioch for you to visit throughout the summer months. Each month the Chamber hosts a new contest for your chance to win prizes. On Sept. 12, all 48 Reflection Mirrors go on the live auction block at the Charity Dinner Auction (the two Beatles Mirrors were auctioned at Antioch’s Taste of Summer in July during the American English performance and raised $1,250 for charity). All proceeds from the live auction are donated to local charities. Over the past four years, the Antioch Chamber has been able to donate over

New Apple Swift language programming class offered at MCC McHenry County College is on the cutting edge of mobile application development training by offering Apple’s new Swift language beginning in August. The 16-week class, iOS Programming (CDM 290-002), takes place from 6 to 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning Aug. 19. This course will teach students how to design applications in the new Swift programming language. This course is ideal for current programmers looking to upgrade their skill sets or students interested in a career in mobile application development. “This is a modern object-oriented software development environment,” said instructor Bill Skrzypczak, instructor and Digital Media Department co-chair. “We will be preparing students to enter the fast-growing, high-paying field of mobile application development.”
One day after Apple released their new Swift language that features more than 4,000 new Application Program Interfaces (APIs), Skrzypczak participated in overview sessions for Apple developers to learn the new language and to be able to offer it to MCC students this fall 2014 semester. According to Skrzypczak, few, if any, community colleges are ready to offer this course by August. “This is the first time Apple has introduced a new programming language since the 1980’s,” Skrzypczak said. “It has been written from scratch and incorporates newer, more efficient features such as simplified memory management, tuples, generics, scalability and optimized performance,” he added. Instead of writing code and putting it into a program to compile or test, the new Swift language allows users to immediately see the results
of their programming on the screen through a platform called “playgrounds.” Skrzypczak has been an adjunct instructor at MCC for three years and became a full time faculty member this summer. He also teaches several other programming classes and a project management class. “I’m looking forward to teaching this class because it opens programming and software development to a whole different crowd,” he said, referring to a user-friendly format aimed at both logical and artistic thinkers. This Swift language class is part of a new mobile application degree program that is being developed at MCC. Skrzypczak expects the new degree program to be available within two years. For more information on the iOS programming class or any other Digital Media class, contact Bill Skrzypczak at (815) 505-5489.

lings - a sister, 15, and younger brother, 7. All three entered foster care in 2007 and were adopted in November 2009. Both Troy and his sister suffer from chronic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of severe abuse and trauma before being placed in foster care. Troy suffers from night ter-

rors, flashbacks, depression and struggles with appropriate behaviors because of the trauma and PTSD. Troy’s family is working with Canines 4 Hope in Florida to have the psychiatric service dog trained for Troy.
The service dog will not only provide Troy with comfort, but will assist him when he is struggling with flashbacks and reminders of his past. This family friendly event will include children’s games, raffles, silent auction,
dog demonstration, a farmers market and more. Fun for the entire family. Monetary donations are also accepted at: www.youcaring.com/other/adog-for-troy/180439. In addition to attending the event, people can also volun-
teer at the event or donate items for the silent auction. Call or e-mail Rose Skora if you have questions about the benefit or would like to make donations or volunteer at rose.skora@yahoo.com or (262) 806-7175.
Literacy Volunteers needed
Free information sessions on becoming a literacy tutor are being offered at McHenry County College (MCC) for reading, math and English on Wednesday, Sept. 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. or Saturday, Sept. 6 from 9 to 11 a.m. MCC’s Adult Education Department is in need of volunteers to tutor adult students in reading, math or English as a Second Language. Anyone over the age of 18 with a desire to make a difference in someone’s life is encouraged to attend. A literacy volunteer tutor does not have to speak a second language or have
any teaching experience to tutor in the adult education literacy program. Volunteer tutors will receive free basic training that provides the information and skills needed to work with literacy students. Training classes are held either on Wednesday evenings or Saturday mornings starting in the fall. All teaching materials are supplied to volunteers. Scheduling flexibility meets people’s busy schedules, including those who are retired or working full time. “People looking to make a difference in the life an Adult Education student
should come to an orientation session to learn about this rewarding opportunity,” said Marie Day, coordinator of Adult Ed and Literary Support Services. For more information or to register for an orientation or training session, call Marie Day at (815) 455-8542. The college is located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake. This project was made possible in part by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

State law targets property owners receiving an erroneous tax break
PHOTO SUBMITTED The Hi Liter
PDO Director Kim Dodd is congratulated by Janet Fluck (from left) Antioch UMC’s Staff Parish Relations Committee Chairman, the Rev. Bill Landis, PDO Director Kim Dodd, and Dawn Vogel, AUMC’s Church Council Chair.
Dodd introduced as new PDO Preschool Director Kim Dodd was introduced on July 27 as the new Director of the PDO (Parents Day Out) Preschool in Antioch. “Miss Kim,” as Mrs. Dodd likes to be called, has taught preschoolers in several area preschools for a number of years. A certified teacher, she has used her skills at Antioch PDO Preschool for the past two years. Although she is taking on the new responsibilities of being PDO Director, Dodd has no intentions of giving up her 4-year old classroom teaching responsibilities. According to Bill Landis, Pastor of Antioch United Methodist Church, sponsor of PDO, “Miss Kim loves children and they love her.” Torie Johnson, long-time Director of PDO (2007-2014), decided to step-down this past June to pursue a career in psychology related fields. She will be training Dodd for the next several weeks. The PDO Preschool (Parents Day Out) is
one of the oldest preschools in Northeast Illinois and the first in the Antioch area. According to Landis, “PDO was founded by the Antioch United Methodist Church over three decades ago because of the need for quality early childhood education and as a way to assist young parents with their parenting skills. “Still a mission of AUMC, our preschool is distinctly Christian, nondenominational and open to people of all church backgrounds or non-church backgrounds. After all,” says Landis, “our motto is ‘Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.’” PDO Preschool is located in the historic Antioch United Methodist Church, 848 Main Street near the Antioch Library and Williams Park. Enrollment is still open for this Fall. Call Director Kim Dodd at (847) 395-1362 for information.
A new state law (effective June 1, 2014) gives the Chief County Assessment Officer authority to recapture taxable value in instances where property owners have received homestead benefits erroneously. The new law aims to create a more fairly distributed property tax burden that benefits taxpayers. McHenry County is providing an amnesty period for the remaining months of 2014 in order to gain maximum compliance. Taxpayers are eligible to receive homestead exemptions on only one property in
any given year. This applies to properties outside of McHenry County and even in other states. You may check your property exemptions status, or report any erroneous exemptions by contacting your local township assessor’s office, or the Chief County Assessment Office. Taxpayers will be notified with a letter if their homestead exemptions are being removed. The removal decision can be appealed to the Chief County Assessment Officer, and if needed to the McHenry County Board of Review. The Chief County Assess-
ment Officer advises all taxpayers to review their homestead exemptions when they receive their 2014 assessment notices. Taxpayers may contact their Township Assessor or our office to correct any exemption errors. Note that homestead exemptions are generally effective as of Jan. 1 of any given year. So, if a taxpayer resides in their property and is eligible for homestead exemptions on Jan. 1, those homestead exemptions are in place for the entire year regardless of whether the property is sold.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for its 11-week Citizen Police Academy (CPA). The class will be held every Wednesday starting Sept. 10, with class graduation on Wednesday, Nov. 29. The CPA consists of a series of classes, discussions and demonstrations of the various operations and Bureaus of the Sheriff’s Office. Classes will be held for three hours, 6 to 9 p.m., weekly at the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office - Training Division in the large classroom. The goal of the CPA is
to create better understanding, communication and partnerships between the citizens of McHenry County and the Sheriff’s Office through education, in order to enhance a safer community. To be a participant, you must be at least 18 years of age, pass a criminal background check and sign the waiver/hold harmless agreement. Preference is given to those who live or work within McHenry County. Once those have been accommodated, those in other counties are free to attend. The Citizen Po-
lice Academy is offered free of charge. Class size will be limited to 22 students; a minimum of 10 students will be required to hold the Academy. Applications can be downloaded from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Web page at www.mchenrysheriff. org. Applications must be postmarked or submitted in person to the Sheriff’s Office by Friday, Aug. 15, 2014. Anyone with questions can contact Deputy Aimeé Knop at (815) 334-4735 or e-mail at sheriff@co.mchenry.il.us.

Lakes Region Historical Society showcases Civil War era ladies attire By Gail Peckler-Dziki
It is important for her to see the actual clothing for various periods of history so she may keep her performances close to the character. And the Lakes Region Historical Society has more than 30 dresses on display at The Meeting House, located at 977 Main St. in Antioch, along with children’s clothing and accessories. One interesting item was a “hat made of hair. In the mid-1800s when a woman had thinning hair, she would have a hat woven of real hair. These would often have curling tendrils down the side of the face. Once that was on, she would wear a knit, white morning cap. And viola, hair! Included in the exhibit is
CORRESPONDENT
Historian/actress Jessica Michna travelled from Racine to view the Lakes Region Historical Society’s “Ladies Attire of the Civil War Revisited exhibit. The Lakes Region Historical Society is located at 817 Main St., Antioch. “This is a magnificent display, she said while there. “It is a rare thing to see so many genuine items and in such pristine condition and wide variation. Michna is a retired health care therapist and loves history. She has developed programs for 11 historical female figures including Helen Keller, Abigail Adams and three programs for Mary Todd Lincoln.
an autograph book. Museum director Ainsley Brooks Wonderling said that autograph books were popular but usually in the private schools. One dress has two bodices and a detachable skirt that allowed the wearer to go from the

daytime to evening events with relative ease. A less expensive dye was discovered in 1856 by William Henry Perkin by accident.
Local man among those caught in child porn sting Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan recently announced charges against two Northern Illinois men on multiple counts of possessing child pornography as part of “Operation Glass House, a statewide initiative to apprehend the most active offenders who download and trade child pornography online. Madigan’s office executed a search warrant with the assistance of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and arrested Edward Marshall, 48, at his home in the 6700 block of Chillems Drive in Spring Grove. Marshall was charged with three counts of possession of child pornography, a Class 3 felony each
punishable by two to five years in prison. Bond was set at $3,000. Investigators from Madigan’s office working with the Round Lake Beach Police Department executed a search warrant and arrested Justin T. White, 32, at his home in the 300 block of East Shorewood Drive in Round Lake Beach. White was charged with two counts of reproduction of child pornography, a Class X felony punishable by six to 30 years in prison; two counts of possession of child pornography, a Class 2 felony punishable by three to seven years in prison; and two counts of violation of the Firearms Owner Identification Card Act, a
Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail. Bond was set at $250,000. “Child pornography is not a victimless crime, Madigan said. “Every file posted online depicts a child, sometimes just months old, being sexually abused. This crime destroys the lives of these innocent victims and is only further perpetuated when it spreads online. These are the 63rd and 64th arrests of Madigan’s Operation Glass House, which she launched in 2010 to investigate and arrest the worst offenders trading child pornography online. The operation’s

investigations conducted by Madigan’s High Tech Crimes Bureau have revealed a disturbing community of criminals who are trading and viewing extremely violent videos of children as young as infants being raped and abused. The Lake and McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Offices will prosecute the cases. “I commend the Attorney General’s Office for their efforts in combating this appalling crime,” said State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim. “One of my priorities as State’s Attorney is to work closely with other governmental agencies such as the Attorney General’s Office to make our communities safer for our children. In light of these most recent apprehensions, we want to assure the community that we are working diligently in order to protect the integrity and innocence of our children by removing these predators from our communities.” Madigan’s investigators were assisted by the Round Lake Beach Police Department and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. “We need to remain vigilant and continue to work together in our ongoing ef-
fort to protect our children,” said McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren. “The type of investigations pursued by the Attorney General’s Office is of a very technical nature and not one that our department could easily undertake,” said Round Lake Beach Police Chief Dave Hare. “The Attorney General’s office has completed several investigations in Round Lake Beach over the last few years and they have all been completed in a very professional manner.” In addition to Operation Glass House, Madigan leads the Illinois Internet Crimes against Children Task Force (ICAC) with a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. The Task Force investigates child exploitation crimes and trains local and county level law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois to do the same. Since 2006, Madigan’s ICAC task force has been involved in 786 arrests of sexual predators. The task force has also provided Internet safety training and education to more than 368,860 parents, teachers and students and more than 17,570 law enforcement professionals.
