State drops appeal in elections commission case The Illinois Attorney General’s Office has dropped its appeal of a circuit court ruling that found the state law mandating the creation of an elections commission in Lake County to be unconstitutional special legislation, according to a Lake County press release. Last July, Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor and Lake County filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Public Act

98-115, which targeted only Lake County and eliminated voters’ rights to choose who administers elections. In November of last year, Circuit Court Judge David Akemann ruled that the provision applying only to Lake County was unconstitutional. The decision overturned the state law allowing the Lake County Clerk to continue to administer local elections. The Illinois Attorney Gen-

eral’s Office subsequently appealed the circuit court’s ruling. As a matter of law, circuit court decisions which invalidate state law are directly appealable to the Illinois Supreme Court. The Illinois Attorney General’s Office had sought and obtained multiple extensions of time to file their opening brief in the appeal, before recently abandoning the appeal.

Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor said, “This is a great day for Lake County taxpayers and voters. Now, instead of creating a new, costly layer of government, we can all get back to our main focus - making county government more efficient and responsive to voters and taxpayers.” Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim was

“pleased but not surprised” by the decision to drop the appeal, a Lake County press release quoted him as saying. “We felt very confident that Public Act 98-115 represented unconstitutional special legislation that, for no legitimate reason, sought to impose discriminatory elections administration rules in Lake County.”

CLC presents Mel Brooks’ new musical, ‘Young Frankenstein’ “Young Frankenstein,” the new Mel Brooks musical based on the famous 1974 film, will be the College of Lake County summer musical, produced by the departments of theatre, music and dance. The show will be presented July 18, 19, 25, 26 at 7:30 p.m. and July 20 and 27 at 2 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts. The production is a wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend. The story follows young Dr. Frankenstein as he attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork and bring a corpse to life. With such memorable tunes as “The Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and “Puttin’ On the Ritz,” “Young Frankenstein” has been enjoyed by Broadway audiences and at regional theatres throughout the country. Newsday called it “A blissfully funny monster mash!” The show, with book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan and music and lyrics by Mel Brooks, is being directed by Craig Rich. Other directors include Jean Hersey (music), Lamaiya Lancaster (dance) and Tom Mitchell (technical). Paul Hefner conducts an 11-member orchestra. Assistant technical director/scene shop supervisor is Jeffrey Weiss and the stage manager is Joey Chelmecki. The production features talented lead actors and a full chorus of singers and dancers. Retiring CLC Art Gallery staff are ‘Hanging It Up’ with new exhibit

A new exhibit called “Hanging It Up,” featuring 29 paintings by Steven Jones of Lake Forest and Jane Ellefson of Lindenhurst, are on display at the College of Lake County Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art through to July 25. Jones has been curator of the CLC gallery for 30 years and Ellefson has worked as the gallery’s preparator since 2000. Both retired at the end of June. The show includes 12 works by Jones and 17 by Ellefson; most of them are for sale through CLC’s Artcetera Gallery Shop. Steven Jones (www.stevenjonesart.com/) has been painting still lifes for over two decades. During the past ten years he has focused on books as his subject. He selects old, well-worn books that trace the many hands that have leafed through them and have shaped their outward character. Jones earned his M.F.A. degree at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He continued studying painting in Paris for many years at the

atelier of Patrick Betaudier, where he learned the Technique Mixte. This painting method uses a solid tempera underpainting with subsequent oil glazes, similar to the 15th Century Flemish approach. Like the Flemish and Dutch masters, Jones’ book still lifes are painted in a highly realistic manner by precisely representing physical appearances. Jones’ works are represented in many private and public collections in the U.S. and France. He has been an adjunct art instructor at CLC since 1986. Jane Ellefson (www. JaneEllefson.blogspot.com) earned her B.A. (art/Spanish) at Ball State University and her M.A. (Spanish) at University of Illinois. After living abroad in Rio de Janeiro and Barcelona, she taught Spanish for many years. But in 2000 Ellefson returned to art, taking a position with the CLC Gallery and renewing her study of painting, learning the Technique Mixte methods from Steven Jones. She has exhibited her work

locally and throughout the Midwest and has been selected to show nationally in the Contemporary Realism Biennial (Fort Wayne, Ind.), National Small Oil Painting (Wichita, Kan.), Collective Singular (Denver, Colo.) and Still Life Now: Nine Contemporary Artists (Lima, Ohio). Many of Ellefson’s realistic paintings are small (10 by 10 inches), including the 17 works featured in this exhibit. “A small work of art invites the viewer to come close and participate in careful observation,” she said. “It creates a kind of intimacy between the viewer and the work, which is part of the appeal for me to work small. “I have always had a curiosity for small objects and many that I have collected through the years find their way into my still lifes. They reference my heritage and reflect my love for Juan Sanchez Cotán and Luis Meléndez, masters of Spanish still life.” Aside from preparing artwork to be exhibited in the gallery shows, Ellefson

helped catalog, organize, photograph, maintain and document the college’s permanent collection, which has grown from 24 pieces in 1973 with a donation of John Tinney McCutcheon pen and ink drawings, to over 600 today. Images from the collection are included on the gallery’s Web site at http://gallery.clcillinois.edu, and Ellefson and Jones collaborated on a project to produce audio tours of the collection’s highlights on the Grayslake campus. In retirement, Jones plans to do more painting, marketing and exhibiting of his work and return to Paris. His favorite CLC memories involve artworks especially commissioned for the college, including the large Bruno Surdo mural, “Where there is art, there is life,” in the James Lumber Center lobby; “The Readers” bronze sculpture located outside the Grayslake campus main entrance; and the Preston Jackson sculpture, “Passages,” at the Lakeshore Campus. Ellefson plans to keep

painting and to visit Spain. Her fondest CLC memories include working with the CLC staff to promote the permanent collection and meeting with artists and collectors who have loaned or donated their artwork to the gallery for a show or for the permanent collection. In the exhibit’s catalog, Jones and Ellefson summarize their long careers at CLC. “It has been our good fortune to work with some truly great artists over the years and to share their remarkable artworks with the college community. It has been a pleasure to get to know so many local artists and to see their artwork mature over the years. “It has been gratifying to see our students go from creating in the classroom to professionally exhibiting their art in our annual CLC Student Art Competition. We have built a lot of relationships with both our artistic community and among CLC faculty and staff. It is indeed difficult to leave CLC knowing these associations will change. However, the

time has come for ‘Hanging It Up!’ For our swan song we are hanging up our own paintings as a gesture of saying farewell to the community we have loved to serve,” Jones and Ellefson wrote. In addition to “Hanging It Up,” the 2014-2015 exhibit calendar for the gallery includes the following shows, which were curated by Jones. Opening receptions are held on Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m. on the opening date unless noted below. • Esperanza Gama: A Series of Memories, Aug. 11 to Sept. 28, 2014 (reception Aug. 22) • 34th Annual Recent Works: A Juried Competition, Oct. 3 to Nov. 9, 2014 • CLC Art Faculty Exhibition, Nov. 14 to Dec. 14, 2014 • Members Exhibition, Jan. 16 to Feb. 22, 2015 • Deanna Krueger: Shimmer, Feb. 27 to April 5, 2015 • College of Lake County Student Art Competition, April 10 to May 16, 2015 • 20/20 Vision: Travels Along America’s Accidental Highway: May 22 to June 26, 2015

State drops appeal in elections commission case in Lake County The Illinois Attorney General’s Office has dropped its appeal of a circuit court ruling that found the state law mandating the creation of an elections commission in Lake County to be unconstitutional special legislation, according to a Lake County press release. Last July, Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor and Lake County filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Public Act 98-115, which targeted only Lake County and eliminated voters’ rights to choose who administers elections. In November of last year, Circuit Court Judge David Akemann ruled that the provision applying only to Lake

County was unconstitutional. The decision overturned the state law allowing the Lake County Clerk to continue to administer local elections. The Illinois Attorney General’s Office subsequently appealed the circuit court’s ruling. As a matter of law, circuit court decisions which invalidate state law are directly appealable to the Illinois Supreme Court. The Illinois Attorney General’s Office had sought and obtained multiple extensions of time to file their opening brief in the appeal, before recently abandoning the appeal. Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor said, “This

is a great day for Lake County taxpayers and voters. Now, instead of creating a new, costly layer of government, we can all get back to our main focus - making county government more efficient and responsive to voters and taxpayers.” Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim was “pleased but not surprised” by the decision to drop the appeal, a Lake County press release quoted him as saying. “We felt very confident that Public Act 98-115 represented unconstitutional special legislation that, for no legitimate reason, sought to impose discriminatory elections administration rules in Lake County.”

Lest We Forget project hosted by Lakes Region Historical Society

McHenry County has historically been home to farmers producing fruits, vegetables, eggs, dairy products, meat and fiber. As the population grew, farms got bigger, but the numbers dropped, resulting in the loss of many small family farms. So today, farms and farm families are changing and returning, transitioning in many cases to specialty producers. There are now pick-your-own apples,

Master Gardeners to host annual Garden Walk

In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the U of I Extension Master Gardeners’ program in McHenry County, master gardeners will showcase their own gardens for a rare glimpse of the fruits of their labors at the annual McHenry County Master Gardener Garden Walk from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 12. Nine amazing gardens will be featured, including eight private residences clustered in the eastern portion of McHenry County and the public Demonstration Garden at McHenry County College. This year’s theme is “How Does Your Garden Grow?” and it is aptly turned around into the question, “How Do Their Gardens Grow?” “This year’s Garden Walk promises the best of the best,” said Marianne Zito, a Master Gardener and chairperson of

Garden Walk. “After many years of inviting you to see other McHenry County Gardens, Master Gardeners welcome you into their world, showcasing the gardens they’ve grown and sharing their best advice - the secret language of their flowers and vegetables.” “The Master Gardener program, under the auspices of the University of Illinois Extension, aims to assist gardeners by answering questions, providing research and best practices and hosting a variety of educational opportunities throughout the year,” Zito said. “In keeping with the anniversary celebration, Garden Walk 2014 will include tips and tricks, education booths at each garden and experts on hand to answer your questions.” Garden Walk is presented by McHenry County College
