Kids 1st Health Fair shifts focus to offer more resources

Kids 1st Health Fair, which has provided free immunizations and other health services to low-income Lake County children since 1993, is evolving in response to new federal guidelines. While school-aged children will receive the usual immunizations and screenings at the fair, to be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Miguel Juarez Middle School, 201 N. Butrick St. in Waukegan, organizers will assist all parents and legal guardians in transitioning to medical homes to seek routine preventative care and treatment in the future. “Under the Affordable Care Act, more comprehensive health care is now available for our residents and

children,” said Tony Beltran, executive director of the Lake County Health Department/ Community Health Center, which co-sponsors the event. “We believe the most valuable service the fair can provide is to encourage residents to address their entire family’s needs by establishing trusted long-term relationships with health care professionals.” Representatives from a variety of local health care providers will be available during the fair to discuss their services and explain how to access those services under the ACA. The fair is also sponsored by United Way of Lake County and Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, which

has sent medical and health science students, faculty and administrative professionals to staff the fair. “We have been proud to

support Kids 1st,” said Dr. K. Michael Welch, president and CEO of RFUMS. “Healthy children make healthy communities. We’re very pleased

that under newly expanded partner with the Lake County models for care, every child Health Department and Romay receive regular check- salind Franklin University on ups and treatment.” See HEALTH FAIR, Page 7 “United Way is honored to

establishments or grab a bite to bring to the concert or you can use this time to stroll and enjoy Antioch’s Downtown Streets and visit one of many shops that specialize in gifts, home decor, clothing, jewelry, personal services and other unique and fun items. A Secretary of State Mobile Driver Services Unit will be available for participants to renew their driver.s licenses. An identification card can be obtained for $20; however, if you are age 65 and older, you may obtain a free, nonexpiring State of Illinois photo ID card. Drivers age 75 and older are required to take a driving test to renew their driver’s licenses; therefore they must visit a Driver Services Facility.

Pledges in excess of $9,000 overnight on July 20, boosted the Antioch Theatre Kickstarter fundraising campaign for the purchase of digital projection equipment above its goal of $65,000. By the following Monday morning, July 28, the total amount pledged had reached $77,385. The Kickstarter fundraising continues until 9:41AM on Thursday, July 31. The minimum pledge is $1 and any pledge over $10 receives a gift. In addition to an upgrade of equipment, the theatre will also undergo a major renovation to both its interior and exterior. Organizers hope that the theatre will be able to reopen during the Christmas season. Readers can still make a pledge by going to the Kickstarter website at https://www.kickstarter. com and searching for “Antioch Theatre.”

Antioch Rotary bids farewell to Gaurav “This was the greatest experience of my life.” With those words Gaurav Sonawane bid farewell on July 17 to the Rotary Club of Antioch which has hosted him as its long-term youth exchange student for the past 11 months. On July 18, Gaurav headed back to his home near Mumbai, India. While in Antioch, Gaurav attended Lakes High School where he made many friends. One of his highlights was

serving as the manager for the Lakes High School Baseball Team. While living in the Antioch/Lake Villa area, Gaurav travelled extensively throughout Chicagoland and the nation. His travels with his three host families and Rotary Club members took him to Florida, Alabama, California, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan and of course, Wisconsin. Bret Mumenthaler, Antioch Rotary’s Youth Exchange Of-

ficer, presented Gaurav with a golf shirt embroidered with the Antioch Rotary Club logo and a Farewell Card signed by all of the Rotary Club members. In addition Mr. Mumenthaler introduced and thanked the three host families with whom Gaurav had lived during his 11 months: • George and Mary Richter of Lake Villa; • Terry and Rebecca Dunleavy of Villa Park;

Lake County Forest Preserve Board approves 100-year vision and strategic plan More than 56 years ago, Lake County resident Ethel Untermyer was looking for an outdoor space for her son to play. She asked a friend about nearby preserves and was surprised to find that there were none. So the next day, she organized a countywide referendum to create the Lake County Forest Preserves. Inspired by Ethel’s foresight, Forest Preserve officials realized it was once again time to make big plans. Last summer, they began work on a bold new 100-year vision to preserve and sustain Lake County’s natural landscape and extend community outreach and nature education efforts well into the future. Through a recently completed 100-year Vision and Strategic Plan, the Lake County Forest Preserves has taken a major step toward defining what our community and our natural environment will look like in 100 years. The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the plan at their Tuesday, July 15

meeting. “Based on our collective 100-year Vision for Lake County, our strategic plan paints a picture of our desired future,” said Ann Maine, President of the Lake County Forest Preserves. “This picture was formed from extensive input from a diverse group of advisors, including commissioners, staff, volunteers and community partners.” The 11-month strategic planning process began in August 2013, as advisors began to sketch out their visions for the future landscape of Lake County. “Our advisors’ visions were thoughtful, creative and transformative. Elements of the strategic plan are derived from those colorful ideas,” said Maine. The 100-year Vision became the foundation of the strategic plan, which will guide decision-making efforts for leaders and staff of the Lake County Forest Preserves as they fulfill their mission to preserve and restore land. They will use the Vision’s core principles of leadership,

conservation and people to protect the forest preserves and ensure that they serve as a model for improving the landscape throughout Lake County. “The plans made today will become the reality for future generations,” said Alex Ty Kovach, Executive Director of the Lake County Forest Preserves. “We owe it to them to think big. Working toward this grand Vision will ensure that our great grandchildren enjoy a healthy and resilient landscape with restored and preserved natural lands, waters and cultural assets. We want to encourage an active outdoor lifestyle for children and adults by promoting the many public health benefits of trails, open space, nature appreciation, recreation and cultural experiences.” To ensure the plan’s success, community advisors and Forest Preserve officials carefully considered potential roadblocks and circumstances that could impact future decision-making. For example, increasing population,

decreased funding and other external forces could result in significant pressure to reconsider the use of undeveloped land. Continued development and urbanization bring new people to Lake County who need to be connected to nature and have access to open space, trails and opportunities to recreate outdoors. Conserving and improving the biodiversity, wildlife habitat and water quality benefits that healthy ecosystems provide are vital for the County’s future. For example, wetlands that store floodwater and trees that deliver clean air and absorb excess carbon from our atmosphere provide vital protection to our communities.

make the county more livable and the local economy more dynamic. Over the next 100 years, we need to create a strategic mindset that can adapt to a changing environment and sustain a desirable quality of life far ahead to the future.” The full plan includes the 100-Year Vision, Strategic Directions and Goals. The Strategic Directions identify the methods and systems needed to reach the Vision. The Goals associated with each strategic direction define the actual practices that will be used to implement the plan. This fall, objectives will be added to the plan to complete the process. Read the plan at www.LCFPD.org/Vision.

Cultivating future generations of stewards who will protect and cherish these remarkable resources is also necessary for these diverse natural communities to thrive. “In 1958 when the agency was founded, visionary people anticipated the growth that was coming to Lake County and took action to create the excellent forest preserves we now enjoy,” said Maine. “Today, we have over 30,100 acres of open space, thanks to the continued spirit of leadership and support from Lake County residents—the true owners of this land. Healthy, diverse and woven throughout our community, these beautiful natural lands and trails

Bill Mellen, left, and Jon Olson give new meaning to the phrase “flipping the bird” during the annual Lions Chicken Barbecue held at Williams Park, 741 Main St., on July 27. The pair were among many Lions members who volunteered to make the popular event a success again this year. Approximately 2,000 half-birds were served to the hungry crowd on hand. Those not wanting to eat at the park were able to go to a drive-through line and get their meal to go. In addition to the food, area residents were also entertained with a live auction of donated goods, games for children, and a live band. this health fair that serves the medical needs of so many school-age children in Lake County, said Kristi Long, UWLC president and CEO. “It’s critical to ensure that kids are healthy and ready to learn when school begins in the fall. The fair began in 1993 thanks to the support of the Abbott Fund, the foundation of the global health care company Abbott, which is based in Lake County. Each year, more than 600 nurses, lab technicians, health aids, clerical staff, doctors, dentists, community residents, corporate employees and bilingual volunteers contribute to the fair’s success. Services are free for Lake County families that meet specific income guidelines, including a gross household income of $44,122 or less. State-required services include dental screenings for children in Head Start, preschool, kindergarten, second and sixth grades; physicals for children in Head Start, preschool, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades; and immunizations for children entering preschool, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades. The 2014 fair will offer foot and shoe assessments by a podiatric team from RFUMS. The university will also send nutritionists, who will speak to families about eating healthy. Each schoolaged child in attendance will receive a nylon bag containing a healthy breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

New state law (effective June 1, 2014) gives the Chief County Assessment Office authority to recapture taxable value in instances where property owners have received homestead benefits erroneously. The new law aims to create a more fairly distributed property tax burden, which benefits taxpayers. Lake County is providing an amnesty period for the remaining months of 2014 in order to gain maximum compliance. Taxpayers are eligible to receive homestead exemptions on only one property in any given year. This applies to properties outside of Lake County and even in other states. You can check your property exemption status, or

Sheriff’s Office serves warrant on murder suspect

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, responded to 518 North Country Club Road, unincorporated McHenry County, reference a death investigation on Nov. 6, 2013, at 2:18 p.m. Deputies arrived on scene and discovered a body that appeared to have been deceased for some time. Investigators learned that the residence had not been lived in for over 18 months. The exterior of the residence had been cared for by a caretaker. The caretaker of the property called after discovering skeletal remains inside the residence. On July 24, 2014, at approximately 1:30 p.m., with the assistance of the United States Marshal Service, William J. Ross, 62, was taken into custody in the 600 block of Country Club Road, McHenry, for murder. Ross is the

homeowner of the residence where the deceased body was found. Ross had previously been taken into custody and charged with Concealment of a Homicidal Death, a Class 3 Felony, and had been released on Feb. 15, 2014, after posting $10,000 cash bond. He is now charged with Murder – Class M Felony. McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the Illinois State Police crime lab, were able to identify additional evidence leading to the upgraded charges against Ross. The details of this evidence are not able to be released. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office does not anticipate any further charges in this case. Ross is currently being held on $5,000,000 bond within the McHenry County Correctional Facility. An Aug. 14 court date has been set.

Deputies involved in shooting with suicidal subject The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office announced that on July 20, at approximately 5 p.m., deputies responded to the 7400 block of Boston Rd., unincorporated Wonder Lake, regarding a suicidal subject. Deputies made contact with Elizabeth N. Kloss, age 53, who was armed with a handgun. Kloss had made several suicidal statements and continued to do so while visibly armed with the handgun inside of the residence. Deputies remained outside and communicated with her in an attempt to get her to surrender so that she could be transported for a mental health evaluation. She subsequently exited the front door of the residence with a .223 as-

sault rifle and advanced toward the deputies. Kloss pointed the rifle at deputies, who then shot, striking her one time in the neck. The scene was secured and medical attention was provided immediately. Kloss was transported to Condell Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. Kloss is currently in the intensive care unit. This incident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time. The Illinois State Police were requested to conduct an investigation regarding the officer involved shooting. The deputies involved have been placed on paid leave, in accordance with our policy and procedures.

HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 2014 • 11

Cholesterol screening offered at Sage YMCA McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will offer a cholesterol screening at Sage YMCA, 701 Manor Road, in Crystal Lake on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Appointments are required at (815) 334-4851.

The cost is $35. The screening requires a 12-hour fast and includes total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart age assessment and cardiovascular education. A nursing consult

is available once results are received. Why is cholesterol important? High cholesterol has a lot to do with your chances of getting heart disease. Although it usually has no signs or symptoms, it can be treat-

ed. In fact, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes are all major risk factors for heart disease. Certain lifestyles such as being a smoker, being overweight and lack of exercise can also put people at a higher risk for developing

heart disease. Everyone can take steps to lower their risk of heart disease and heart attack by addressing these risk factors. By quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and maintaining a

healthy weight, you can keep blood cholesterols down. For more information on cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/what_you_can_do.htm.

“Under the Affordable Care Act, more comprehensive health care is now available for our residents and children,” said Tony Beltran, executive director of the Lake County Health Department/ Community Health Center, which co-sponsors the event. “We believe the most valuable service the fair can provide is to encourage residents to address their entire family’s needs by establishing trusted long-term relationships with health care professionals.” Representatives from a variety of local health care providers will be available during the fair to discuss their

services and explain how to access those services under the ACA. The fair is also sponsored by United Way of Lake Coun-

ty and Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, which has sent medical and health science students, faculty and

administrative professionals CEO of RFUMS. “Healthy children make healthy comto staff the fair. “We have been proud to munities. We’re very pleased support Kids 1st,” said Dr. K. See HEALTH FAIR, Page 7 Michael Welch, president and

New hoophouses extend growing Land buy closes gap in DPR Trail season, serve as teaching tools

Fair Facts: • The year the Fair had the highest attendance was 2009, when 2,785 children received services. • Last year, 892 children received services at the Fair. • The Fair has provided 9,270 free immunizations, 14,270 free physicals, and 15,634 free dental screenings since 1993.

PET EQUINE DIRECTORY

• There are no charges for any services at the Kids 1st Health Fair.

At their July 15 meeting, the Lake County Forest Preserves Board of Commissioners approved a small land purchase that will have a mighty impact on the Des Plaines River Trail and Greenway. Cost of the purchase is $50,000 per acre for the proposed 4.4-acre parcel. The addition to the Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area provides the land needed to build the remaining section of the Des Plaines River Trail (DPRT) and closes the current gap that extends from just south of Riverside Drive and just north of Estonian Lane in Lincolnshire. The land borders the west edge of the river, east of Milwaukee Avenue. The vision of a countywide trail and greenway that follows the river’s edge has been in the making for 51 years. Completing this small break in the trail would allow it to stretch from Russell Road just south of the Wisconsin border to Lake Cook Road, where it connects to the Cook County Forest Preserve trail system. “Completing the Des Plaines River Trail has been one of the District’s fundamental goals since the first board, said Lake County Forest Preserve President Ann Maine. “It was the vision of Forest Preserve founder Ethel Untermyer so this brings her idea full-circle. The District’s first land purchase in 1961

was a parcel within the trail corridor, and two years later the District passed an ordinance calling for the creation of a Forest Preserve in and along the Des Plaines River for the purpose of education, pleasure and recreation of the public, connecting that property via forested corridors and pathways. Currently the trail winds through 12 forest preserves and spans nearly the entire length of Lake County. The DPRT is a key link in a regional network of trails that includes the Millennium Trail and Greenway, Casey Trail and Greenway, Fort Hill Trail, North Shore Bike Path and the McClory Trail The missing section of DPRT trail is about three-tenths of a mile and would extend the trail from its current 31.1 miles to 31.4 miles. Next steps The land transaction is contingent on a final closing in approximately 60 to 90 days. Once the land ownership is transferred, trail engineering and permitting will start. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2015 and be complete in summer 2015. that under newly expanded models for care, every child may receive regular check-ups and treatment. “United Way is honored to partner with the Lake County Health Department and Rosalind Franklin University on this health fair that serves the medical needs of so many schoolage children in Lake County, said Kristi Long, UWLC president and CEO. The university will also send nutritionists, who will speak to families about eating healthy.

the other similarly sized house is used for class experiments in growing cover crops like rye, clover and vetch. Eventually, fruits and vegetables will be raised in the second house as the program grows. CLC students have appreciated the hands-on learning inside the hoophouses. “It’s incredible to learn and see the drip irrigation system, said Melissa Benson. The Vernon Hills resident said she hadn’t heard of hoophouses prior to the course, but now is interested in a career in growing local foods. Note: Community members can purchase fresh produce grown by sustainable agriculture students at the CLC Farmer’s Market, held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Grayslake campus C Wing entrance through the end of the summer. with various sowings each week until October and possibly even through December. Then crops can be planted again in March, she said. “This provides an economic advantage, since you can sell early hoophouse tomatoes before your farmers’ market competitors. It can also extend the growing season into the winter with cold-hardy crops such as spinach, kale and mixed salad greens. Located south of the Horticulture building on the Grayslake, the structures, which measure 96 feet long, 35 feet wide and 16 feet high, consist of metal hoops or frames that support weather-resistant plastic over compost-enriched soil. With hoops anchored into a concrete foundation, the house can withstand both thunderstorms and snow loads. One house currently is used for growing fruits and vegetables,

Two new hoophouses are now serving as a living laboratories for students in the College of Lake County horticulture and sustainable agriculture programs. By allowing sunlight to warm the inside air to a temperature conducive to planting, the hoophouse extends the growing season by several months. Knowing how to use hoophouses is vital for sustainable agriculture students who want to start their own business or work for a small farm growing local food, said Rory Klick, chair of the horticulture department. By growing crops in the new structures, students also learn about rain collection methods to support drip irrigation systems, inter-cropping methods, seasonal crop rotations and sequential planting schedules to grow fruits, vegetables and herbs. “With hoophouses, crops can be planted in succession,

Historical Society to New Ill. State Parks guide available host open house McHenry County Historical Society and members of the Wilson/Weyland Family of Marengo will host a free open house between 1 and 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10. Both sites, the 1867 limestone Pringle one-room schoolhouse and the pre-Civil War “Stewart’s Scottish Cemetery,” are located within a stone’s throw of each other near River Road and Route 23. During the 1840s, the land north of Marengo was settled by a number of pioneering families from Scotland. Many of these settlers came by way of Canada, traveled to Jo Daviess County to work in the lead mines, then reversed course back east to the Marengo area. They established farms along the southern edge of the hardwood forests north of the Kishwaukee River and in time founded the First Presbyterian Church of Marengo. In January 1999 the historical society plaqued the church on its centennial. The historical society has owned Pringle School since 2002 and volunteers have undertaken its restoration and interpretation since then. This year a selection of artifacts,
