SO CLOSE: Antioch Theater needs $11,500 in donations to stay open Kickstarter deadline is July 31

The Antioch Theater is on a make or break countdown. The Kickstarter program is just $10,500 away from its $65,000 goal, which has to be met by the morning of July 31. If the goal is not met, the 95-year-old theater, located at 378 Lake Street, will close for good. Cindy Kottke, former owner of the theatre, has been promoting the effort to raise $65,000 through Kickstarter. com. The Kickstarter pledges, if the goal is met, will be used to purchase digital projection equipment for the theatre.

The conversion from analog-to-digital equipment is a requirement imposed by movie distributors. A loan from the village and pledges from local businesses have raised an additional $600,000 to be used for renovations to the building both inside and out. Use of those funds is also contingent upon the Kickstarter goal being met, however. The Kickstarter campaign was started by area businessman Tim Downey. As of press time another $11,500 of pledges are still needed to meet the goal. Pledges as small as $1 are

a big deal and gladly accepted on the website and anyone pledging $10 or more will receive a gift. Also, 24” x 24” stars to be personalized and permanently placed in the sidewalk outside the theatre for those pledging $5,000 to the renovation project. The fundraising campaign ends on the morning of Thursday, July 31. To learn more about the fundraising effort and to make a pledge, visit the Kickstarter website at http://kickstarter. com and search for Antioch Theatre; email antiochtheatre@gmail.com, or call (847) 395-0425.

‘Fiddler on the Roof’ now at PML

The final show of PM&L Theatre’s 53rd season, “Fiddler on the Roof,” written by Joseph Stein with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, opened July 18, and will run for three weeks. Donna Badtke directs. Rich in historical detail, Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. With beloved songs such as “Sunrise, Sunset,” “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “Fiddler on the Roof” has the perfect mix of

audience pleasing humor and heart. “Fiddler on the Roof” will run Fridays and Saturdays, July 25, 26, Aug. 1, 2 at 8 p.m. and Sundays, July 27 and Aug. 3 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at www. pmltheatre.com and are $16 for adults and $13 for seniors and students. To reserve your tickets directly through our box office, call (847) 395-3055. The box office is open Monday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon and 90 minutes before curtain on show dates. PM&L Theatre is located at 877 N. Main Street, Antioch.

They are part of an effort to raise $65,000 through Kickstarter.com, one critical part of a major renovation planned for the 95-year-old village landmark structure. The Kickstarter pledges, if the goal is met, will be used to purchase digital projection equipment for the theatre. Antioch Lion’s chicken barbecue, live auction is July 27 By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

The Antioch Lions Club annual chicken barbecue begins serving at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, July 27 at Williams Park. This year, proceeds from the live auction, scheduled for noon and the barbecue, will benefit the many charitable events and efforts that the group sponsors. One of the most important is making sure that all Antioch residents have the glasses and hearing aids that they need. “One main mission of Lion’s Clubs is to make sure that those residents of Antioch that can’t afford glasses and hearing aids get the

exams and devices that they need,” explained Adam K. Zakroczymski III, Lion’s Club member and chair of the auction committee. The Antioch Lion’s Club also supports Open Arms Mission, Toys for Tots and sponsors food baskets at Thanksgiving and Easter to make sure that everyone in Antioch has a pleasant holiday. While Lion’s Club members have organized the day, numerous other groups and area businesses have donated to this event. The GooRoos are donating a 90-minute concert. Other donors include Piggly Wiggly, American Midwest Bank, Strang

Funeral Home, Stateline Environmental, International Services, Inc., Uline, Nielsen Enterprises, The Lodge, The Limerick, Antioch Community High School and many more. Zakroczymski said a special thanks is due to the individual Lion’s members who have made personal contributions. Antioch’s own Raymond Chevrolet donated a 2003 Chevrolet Impala for the auction. Tickets for the Chicken barbecue are $10 at Piggly Wiggly, $12 at Williams Park on that day of the BBQ. Food is served at 11:30 a.m., the live auction starts at noon and the GooRoos play from

4:30 to 6 p.m. The baggo will be open from noon until tournament starts at 1 p.m., 5 p.m. $20 entrance fee for teams of For more information two. Bouncy houses for kids about this event, the Antioch

Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus in Lake County A mosquito pool (or batch of mosquitoes) sampled July 8 in Deerfield has tested positive for West Nile virus. The mosquito pool is the first confirmed indicator of the disease’s presence in Lake County in 2014. In 2013, five human cases, two birds, and 41 mosquito pools tested positive for the virus in the county. “Hot weather typically increases mosquito activity,” said Tony Beltran, the Health Department’s Executive Director. “You can protect yourself against mosquito bites by following the three Rs - reduce your exposure to mosquitoes, repel them by wearing insect repellent and report areas where mosquitoes typically breed.” The Health Department maintains a West Nile virus hotline for county residents to report areas of stagnant water (which are conducive for mosquito breeding), or to obtain more information on the signs and symptoms of West Nile encephalitis. The West Nile hotline number is: (847) 377-8300. Information can also be found at: http://health. lakecountyil.gov/Population/ Pages/West-Nile-Virus.aspx. Recommendations to prevent mosquito breeding include: • Discard old tires, buckets, drums or any water holding

containers. Poke holes in tires used as bumpers on docks • Keep roof gutters and downspouts clear of debris. • Keep trash containers covered. • Empty plastic wading pools at least once a week and store indoors when not in use. • Drain unused swimming pools • Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water. • Change the water in bird baths and plant urns at least once a week. • Store boats upside down or drain rainwater weekly. Recommendations to prevent mosquito bites include: • Whenever possible, limit outdoor activity at dusk. • Wear light-colored clothing that minimizes exposed skin and provides some protection from mosquito bites. • Make sure door and window screens fit tightly and that all holes are repaired. • Apply insect repellent that includes DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535 according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants. While most people infected with WNV have no symptoms of illness, some may become ill, usually three to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. In some individu-

als, particularly the elderly, the virus can cause muscle weakness, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, coma or death. The Health Department conducts a multi-faceted mosquito surveillance program in Lake County. Beginning in late spring and continuing into the autumn, a series of traps are set around the county, including within the Lake County Forest Preserves. At each site a pool, or batch, of mosquitoes is tested weekly for West Nile virus. Areas of stagnant water are also investigated throughout the season for the presence of mosquito larvae, specifically from the Culex mosquito which is the primary carrier of West Nile in Illinois. Finally, the locations of dead birds are monitored to assist in the assessment of potential West Nile virus activity. The Health Department works closely with the municipalities, townships and the Lake County Forest Preserve District in monitoring the mosquitoes that may pose a public health threat. Information about WNV can be found on the Department’s Web site at: http:// health.lakecountyil.gov/Population/Pages/West-Nile-Virus. aspx.

State law targets property owners receiving an erroneous tax break County seeks compliance with one-year amnesty period New state law (effective June 1, 2014) gives the Chief County Assessment Office authority to recapture taxable value in instances where property owners have received homestead benefits erroneously. The new law aims to create a more fairly distributed property tax burden, which benefits taxpayers. Lake County is providing an amnesty period for the remaining months of 2014 in order to gain maximum compliance. Taxpayers are eligible to receive homestead exemptions on only one property in any given year. This applies to properties outside of Lake County and even in other states. You may check your property exemption status, or report any erroneous exemptions by contacting your local

township assessor’s office, or the Chief County Assessment Office. Taxpayers will be notified with a letter if their homestead exemptions are being removed. The removal decision can be appealed to the Chief County Assessment Officer, and if needed to the Lake County Board of Review. Chief County Assessment Officer Marty Paulson said, “As taxpayers receive their assessment notices over the next several weeks, they should look closely at the homestead exemptions they are receiving. Property owners can contact their township assessor or our office with any questions, and we will work them to correct any errors.” The Chief County Assessment Office has a web page dedicated entirely to homestead exemption recapture/

fraud information at assessor. lakecountyil.gov. An anonymous homestead exemption tip line has been set up for taxpayer reporting on homestead exemption issues. The phone number is (847) 377-4799. The e-mail box for reporting erroneous exemptions/fraud is Exemptions@lakecountyil.gov. When contacting our office, make sure to include the property index number and/ or property address and why the exemption should be removed. Note that homestead exemptions are generally effective as of Jan. 1 of any given year. So, if a taxpayer resides in their property and is eligible for homestead exemptions on Jan. 1, those homestead exemptions are in place for the entire year regardless of whether the property is sold.

They are part of an effort to raise $65,000 through Kickstarter.com, one critical part of a major renovation planned for the 95-year-old village landmark structure. The Kickstarter pledges, if the goal is met, will be used to purchase digital projection equipment for the theatre. Area residents gather to sample snacks from a number of local food vendors during the 24th Antioch Taste of Summer at the Brook Bandshell, 900 Skidmore Dr., July 18.

“Richmond native Georgia Rae Mussard is like any other 15-year old precocious teenager juggling school, family life, and hobbies except that her skill set involves a total immersion in the world of old-timey fiddle playing and historic Americana. By immersion, it is not meant ‘dipped in like a tea bag,’ but thoroughly soaking and simmering. “That dedication and total commitment led a kindergarten-aged child, fascinated by the sound of a stringed instru-

ment, all the way to earning the title of Grand Champion at the 2013 Illinois State Fiddling Championships in the “old timey” category. Of note, this is the same competition won by a young Champaign, Illinois-based player, decades ago. She is the multiple Grammy Award-winning Alison Krauss, someone Georgia Rae would like to meet.” These opening paragraphs from an article several months ago left off with Georgia Rae, and the family band, preparing for a June trip to Weiser, Idaho, to take part in the 2014

outlet, WRLR, hosted by Tony Young. The troupe will go to Reedsburg, Wis., country station WNFM, July 24 and Aug. 4, for a 7 a.m. broadcast venture. Live performances, for the coming months, are slated at Hawthorn Hollows in Kenosha, Wis., Aug. 8; Phoenix Park in Delavan, Wis., Aug. 9, the Walworth County Fair in Elkhorn, Wis., Aug. 30, Homer Harvest Days in Homer Glen, Ill., Sept.6-7, and Oct. 4 at Woodstock, Ill., Alefest. “We’ve just accepted our first booking for 2015, and we’re very excited for the future,” said Roni Mussared, the family’s matriarch and the band’s guitar player. Siblings Quin, and Kelly Jo, fill out the musical quartet. The ever-widening circle of acclaim and awareness for Georgia Rae Mussared’s playing is following a similar path and template laid down more than 30 years ago, by a young 13-year old teenager that grabbed the top fiddling honors at the National Flatpicking Championships in Winfield

(Kansas), and also snagged the Illinois Grand Champion fiddle title in the same competition won by Mussared. Illinois native Alsion Krauss kept winning competitions and landed a contract with Rounder Records, at 14. Along with the band, Union Station, they garnered more than two-dozen Grammy Awards over a musical career that led to the development of her unique voice and phrasing and becoming an “in-demand” singer. She was sought out by Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, arranger T-Bone Burnett, and Buddy Miller for the “out of nowhere” 2008 masterpiece, “Raising Sand.” Despite rumors, and Plant’s occasional “hints” about a sequel piece, “There are no plans for a follow-up to that project,” said Regina Joskow, the publicist for Rounder Records. “In January, Alison (Krauss), and Union Station, will be releasing a new CD, which we’re all looking forward to.” Krauss has gained a professional and business acu-

men through her years of navigating the ins and outs of the music industry to forge a career doing something that she loves…making and playing music. This is one aspect that Mussared wants to explore and looks to Krauss as a role model. “Really, it would be fun just to meet her. She’s done so much,” she said. It turned out that Krauss wanted to meet Mussared, according to Joskow, after hearing samples of her playing, and for the fact that both of their names are engraved on the Illinois Grand Champion trophy. Krauss and Union Station played at the Ravinia Festival July 12, in Highland Park and it was a perfect chance to meet. “This was a very special circumstance in that we had two grand champions,” said Pedro De Jesus, the festival’s Press and Social Media Director. “The Ravinia Festival is always seeking opportunities to encourage young artists and support individuals that are dedicated to their craft. It was a pleasure to help facili-

tate these two champions getting together.” Between De Jesus and Joskow, the inevitable occurred after Krauss and the band completed a 90-minute set. Being led to the top floor of the festival’s administration building, and into a side room, Roni and Georgia Rae waited. The youngster brought her fiddle, named “Mr. Anderson,” and played a few numbers for others in the room. Georgia Rae noted, “I brought it, in case she wanted to play.” When the door opened to the next room, there was Krauss, radiant and gracious. “You’re her. The fiddle player…how wonderful,” she said, as she shook hands. Conversations between the two girls ranged from having the family as a backing band to travels on the road. “My sister and mom are the only ones I trust to play music with me,” said Georgia Rae, while beaming a big smile. Krauss began to reminisce about her younger days, and tried to recall the year she
