Antioch Lion’s chicken barbecue is July 27 By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

If you are hungry at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 27, the Antioch Lions Club Foundation will be serving up their barbequed chicken. Head over to Williams Park and eat your fill. Stay for the silent auction scheduled to start at noon. People can purchase barbecue tickets at the Piggly Wiggly prior to the event for $10 each. Tickets purchased the day of the event will cost $12. The GooRoos, a cover band that plays many favorites and at many local places, will play from 4:30 to 6 p.m. There will be bounce houses for the kids from noon until five and a baggo tournament for adults

1 p.m. The fee is $20 entry for two-person teams. This year, the Antioch Lions, a non-profit 501C3 organization, will also host the auction. There is still time for community members to add to the auction line-up. About the Antioch Lions Club The annual chicken barbecue is the Antioch Lions Club’s biggest fundraiser. By adding the auction, the Lions will have more resources to contribute to community needs. Lions Club’s true calling as a club is to aid with the sight and hearing impaired. If an Antioch resident (60002 zip) can’t afford an eye exam and/

or glasses or a hearing test and hearing aid, the Lions pay for exams, glasses and hearing aids. The Lions also contribute to important community groups and events such as the Open Arms Mission, military care packages, Toys for Tots, food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas and the

young marines. The organization funds six $750 scholarships for qualifying Antioch resident students every year. The Lions built the original swimming pool in Antioch and donated $10,000 toward the new Antioch Aqua Center. The Lions funded a baseball field at the Tim Osmond

Sports Complex and recently spent $4,800 on signs and upkeep at the Bill Brook Wetland Sanctuary. For more information about this event, the Antioch Lions Club and membership, visit http://www.antiochlionsclubil.org/# or the Antioch Lions Facebook page.

Super Senior Mobile Driver’s event scheduled The Illinois Secretary of State Super Senior Mobile Driver’s event is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 8, at the Antioch Township office. Rules of the Road class, written and vision testing, license renewal and state IDs, along with organ donation information and vehicle stickers will be available. Super Seniors is a convenient and voluntary program for driver’s license renewal, which includes Rules of the Road classroom instruction, and a visionscreening exam. The Rules

of the Road Review Course also includes a review of safe driving techniques and Illinois driving laws. A Secretary of State Mobile Driver Services Unit will be available for participants to renew their driver’s licenses. An identification card can be obtained for $20; however, if you are age 65 and older, you may obtain a free, non-expiring State of Illinois photo ID card. Drivers age 75 and older are required to take a driving test to renew their driver’s licenses; therefore they must visit a Driver Services Facility.

Time is running out for Antioch Theater Funding needs to hit goal by July 31 or theater goes dark tance to cover in reaching its Kickstarter goal of $65,000 for the equipment. The fund raising will continue through the month of July. If the theatre does not reach its goal by then, it will receive none of the pledged funds. As an incentive, a number of pledge plateaus have been established with a variety of gifts of thanks being offered based on the amount pledged. They include everything from a soft drink and a box of popcorn to a permanent star engraved in the sidewalk outside of the theatre. The public’s help in the campaign is urgently needed. It could mean the difference between one day saying, “How about going to a movie at the Antioch Theatre tonight” or “The Antioch Theatre used to stand over there.” To find out more about the fundraiser and to make your pledge, visit the Kickstarter website at https://kickstarter.com/ projects/608543555/savethe-antioch-theatre or the

campaign’s Facebook site at http://facebook.com/AntiochTheatre. You can also write the Save the Antioch Theatre campaign at antiochtheatre@gmail.com. Projectionist Nikki Jelinski of Antioch gives a demonstration of how to thread 35mm movie film through a projector at the Antioch Theatre, 378 Lake St., on Friday, July 11. The theatre was built in 1919 as a venue for live performances. It was converted to a movie theatre in 1924. Despite being a community fixture for 95 years, it is currently in a fight for its life. The establishment is in need of maintenance inside and a facelift outside. The cramped and outdated projection room is also in need of an update as it transitions from the analog world to one of digital projection. JUDE KAIDER The Hi LIter

Black Box Theatre sets auditions for fall play The new Black Box Theatre at McHenry County College will host auditions for the fall production of “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani, and directed by Jay Geller. “On a cold clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the starfilled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend–almost– in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.” (Dramatic Play Services.) Auditions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 25 and 26, in the new Black Box Theatre. Callbacks will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28. A 2- to 3-minute contemporary dramatic or comedic monologue or a reading must be provided. Roles are available for five men and four women, ages 18 to 30. Auditions are open to all students, faculty/staff and community members. Rehearsals will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. “Almost, Maine” will open on Thursday, Nov. 6, with performances on Nov. 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22. All performances will begin at 7 p.m. For more information, call Jay Geller at (815) 455-8746 or e-mail him at jgeller@ mchenry.edu.

Antioch Police Department to host Save a Star Pill Collection and Disposal Program The Village of Antioch, the Antioch Police Department and Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation launched a new pill disposal and collection program on Aug. 14, 2013. The purpose of this program is to collect and safely dispose of unwanted and unused medications, thus keeping them out of the hands of individuals who might otherwise become victims of prescription drug abuse. More young people now die each year from prescription drug overdoses than from heroin, methamphetamines, cocaine and inhalants, combined. The problem has reached epidemic proportions and threatens the lives of millions of Americans. Our village, our police department and Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation have partnered to battle this epidemic. The pill collection unit has been installed in the Antioch Police Department. The fol-

lowing items are acceptable for disposal: • Prescription medications, including controlled substances • All over-the-counter medications • Medication samples • Pet medications • Vitamins and supplements • Medicated ointments, lotions, creams and oils • Liquid medication in leakproof containers • Homeopathic remedies Items not acceptable for deposit in the collection unit are: • Needles/sharps • Syringes with needles • Thermometers • IV bags • Bloody or infectious waste • Personal care products • Empty containers • Hydrogen peroxide If you would like more information about Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation, visit online at www. SAVEASTAR.org or call (847) 579-1300, ext. 146.

Open Arms Mission sponsors first golf outing to benefit local children Open Arms Mission is sponsoring its first Tee Off for Local Kids golf outing at Antioch Golf Course on Saturday, Aug. 2. Proceeds from the event will fund the Back Pack Program next year for at risk grade school students. “Our goal is to raise $4,000, which will provide weekend meals for Antioch and Lake Villa school district students,” said Marytherese Ambacher, executive director of the food pantry that serves Antioch and Lake Villa Township resi-

dents. During the school year each grade school-age participant receives a back pack with nine meals and six snacks every Friday afternoon. A total of 85 children were identified and referred to the program last year by school social workers. “The participating children otherwise may go hungry on weekends,” said Ambacher. Check-in for the golf outing will be at 11 am with a shotgun start at noon. Registration fee is $100 per golfer,

with $50 from each fee to benefit the 2014-2015 Back Pack Program. The fee covers the cost of 18 holes of golf, cart, hot dog lunch and dinner. Fee for the dinner only is $50. To register contact Open Arms Mission Food Pantry, (847) 395-0309 or Pete Hall at Antioch Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, (847) 395-0200. The food pantry, located at 1548 S. Main St., Antioch, is a non-profit organization run by volunteers who distribute food to families in need three days every week.

The final show of PM&L Theatre’s 53rd season, “Fiddler on the Roof,” written by Joseph Stein with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, opens Friday, July 18, and will run for three weeks. Donna Badtke directs. Set in the little village of Anatevka, the musical centers on Tevye (Mark Badtke), a poor dairyman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with tradition in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical detail, Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.

50th Annual Friends of the Museums Art Fair – a summer tradition

JUDE KAIDER The Hi Liter

Ahoy!

The Pink Pirates paddle their way to victory during the Fifth Annual Family Cardboard Boat Regatta held at Pedersen Park, 660 W. Rt. 173 in Antioch, on July 13. It was a successful defense of their victory last year. The team, comprised of Jessica Lamberty, 14, Jenna Lamberty, 10, Jessica Nettgen, 13, Aliya Rhodes, 12, and Sammi Salmi, 12, set sail to promote breast cancer awareness. First prize included a ribbon along with a pool party at the Antioch Aqua Center for the

team and 50 of their closest friends. Seven teams competed by building boats of various designs and degrees of seaworthiness from cardboard boxes held together with caulk, duct tape, and hope. The event was co-sponsored by Northbridge Church (http:// northbridgechurch.org) and the Parks and Recreation Department. For more information about future Parks and Recreation events call (847) 395-2160 or visit their website at http://www.antioch.il.gov/parks.cfm.

sha County farm in 1964. In 1992, he allowed the excavation of the mammoth on his property by the Museum and generously donated the bones to the Kenosha Public Museum. The Museum’s subsequent research on the Schaefer Mammoth proves that the mammoth was butchered by humans using stone tools 14,300 years ago. It documents the presence of Paleo-Indians living in North America 1,500 years earlier than previously thought. After 20 years of research, it is one of a handful of oldest archaeological sites in North America. The Friends of the Museums are pleased to welcome the KUSD Summer Student Art Show this year. Student artwork will be displayed in the classrooms inside the Kenosha Public Museum. KUSD student musical groups will perform on the Mezzanine inside the Kenosha Public Museum throughout the day. The Pie and Ice Cream Booth benefits the KUSD Fine Arts Program. Plan to spend the day at the Friends of the Kenosha Public Museums Art Fair. The Friends of the Kenosha Public Museums present this art fair annually to support new exhibits at the Kenosha Public Museum, Civil War Museum and the Dinosaur Discovery Museum. Antioch Lion’s chicken barbecue is July 27 By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

If you are hungry at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 27, the Antioch Lions Club Foundation will be serving up their barbequed chicken. Head over to Williams Park and eat your

fill.

There will be bounce houses for the kids from noon until five and a baggo tournament for adults 1 p.m. The fee is $20 entry for

two-person teams. Lions Club’s true calling as

a club is to aid with the sight and hearing impaired. If an Antioch resident (60002 zip) can’t afford an eye exam and/or glasses or a hearing test and hearing aid, the Lions pay for exams, glasses and hearing aids. The Lions also contribute to important community groups and events such as the Open Arms Mission, military care packages, Toys for Tots, food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas and the young marines. McHenry County’s first traffic roundabout comes to Johnsburg By Gregory Harutunian CORRESPONDENT

Progress on McHenry County’s first roundabout traffic circle continues at a torrid pace in Johnsburg, as four contractors are on-site to further the project along to completion this fall. The unique traffic system circumvents an awkward three-way intersection, in favor of a circle with entrance and exit points to allow easier vehicle flow, as well as yield directions in place of stop signs for vehicles outside the circle itself. It started late in late March, and anticipation is already running high to experience the practical use of the circle. Flaggers now control the traffic, which flows west on Johnsburg Road, while eastbound traffic follows a detour route to reconnect with the thoroughfare. Aimed at relieving congestion, during peak travel times, the actual construction has been steady and tied into last year’s improvements. This second phase of a two-part construction project picks up from the 2013 effort, which saw Johnsburg Road enlarged, with two lanes of

Discover the

traffic in both east-west directions, and re-configured access points on main throughways Spring Grove Road and Riverside Drive. New traffic signals were erected at the latter two intersections to promote regulated movement and easier turning capabilities. The tri-corner corner area encompassing Chapel Hill and Johnsburg roads with St. John’s Avenue have been long-standing clogging points, with often lengthy vehicle backups and time-consuming waiting periods. The concept of uniting all three corners into a roundabout configuration is as much a test, as it is a theoretical solution. “It’s going to pick up about 1,000 feet east of Spring Grove road, and continue for nearly a quarter-mile to the Chapel Hill Road cross angle,” said Mike Hastings, the on-site engineer for H. R. Green, the group overseeing the project’s construction aspects. “The McHenry County Division of Transportation is running the project. As far as I know, this is the first roundabout ever installed on a roadway in McHenry county history.

“It had been in the planning stages for a long time, and seeing it come to pass locally is exciting. We want to see how it works, and the expected completion date for the road building and the circle is slated for Aug. 31, right around the Labor Day holiday.” Funding for the entire project comes from the state of Illinois Department of Transportation, state motor tax allotments and proceeds, and the McHenry County. “The split is 80 percent paid by the state, and the other 20 percent is being handled by the county,” said Hastings. “As for road closures, flaggers are already directing traffic, while the construction and grading goes on.” Kevin Busse, an intern with HR Green, commuting from Mt. Prospect is on-site and marveling at the project. “This is really something to see. There are four contractors here and everyone is kind of on top of each other. But the progress is easy to view, with a time camera pointed at the roadwork along Johnsburg Road and the roundabout. “I think when they are done, it will be put together as

a time-lapse folder, just like they did for the Miller Road bridge repairs last year.” Specific road closures currently in place: St. John’s Avenue, the road is closed between Johnsburg Road and Church Street allowing local traffic only; eastbound Johnsburg Road, the road is closed between Spring Grove Road and Fairview Avenue with local traffic only; and westbound Johnsburg Road, the road is open to westerly traffic on Chapel Hill Road to Johnsburg Road through the construction zone. Johnsburg Road will be closed to westbound traffic from Fairview Avenue to Chapel Hill Road, with local traffic only. The Wauconda-based firm of Glenbrook Excavating and Concrete, Inc. is being tasked with the job contract to do

road dredging, top layer removal, grading, bedding, and resurfacing. Last year, improvements on Johnsburg Road included new sewer pipe and junctions, curbing, retaining walls to prevent erosion onto the roadway, and culverts for water retention. “The Village of Johnsburg is pleased with the improvements to Johnsburg Road, and we look forward to the completion of the roundabout this year,” said Johnsburg Village Administrator Claudett Peters. “The improvements will help to relieve traffic congestion during peak travel times and will enhance our community.” Currently, there are five roundabouts at intersections in the area: Millburn and Hunt Club roads, Wadsworth and Hunt Club roads, Cedar Lake and Monaville roads (all

in Illinois,) as well as Springbrook Road and Route 165, and Lewis Avenue and Route 165 in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., and all have received rave reviews for their appearance and smooth traffic flow. Another reason that roundabouts have gained popularity for refurbishing traffic patterns is the reduction in the occurrence of severe accidents. Illinois Department of Transportation records show a reduction in major accidents at the two Hunt Club Road roundabouts, as opposed to the three-way intersections previously employed at the site. Hastings added, “Residents and community members can follow the progress on the website, (www.johnsburgroad.com), and see where the current road closures are going to be, along with other updated information.”
