Dickens meeting set for tonight The Antioch Chamber of Commerce is hosting meeting for those interested in volunteering for the Dickens Holiday Village, beginning at 6:30 p.m. June 25, at Antioch’s Community Building, 884 Main St. There is parking and an entrance in the back of the building. This will be an informational meeting and does not require any commitment. The program will be explained to give volunteers who are interested a chance to see what types of talent is needed. Call the Antioch Chamber at (847) 395-2233 to register. This will also assure you will be notified of upcoming meetings. What it is: The Antioch Chamber has announced the creation of a brand new holiday program for Antioch: Dickens Village. Throughout the year volunteers are needed to create

Dickens Characters to place on the sidewalks of downtown Antioch for the months of November and December. This will be a program that will continue to grow year by year. Volunteers are needed to serve on these committees: • Apparel Committee: If you like to sew or like to shop thrift stores, you can help create a Dickens Wardrobe for the Dickens Village. Volunteers are needed to work on this in early 2014 (while thrift stores still have winter apparel); • Story Committee: People who enjoy the Dickens story are needed to help us create a storyline for the program. Each Dickens character will have a plaque telling the story of who that character is. Characters will be created around the storyline, so this is a very important part of our Dickens Village; • Construction Committee:

The Dickens Characters need to be made of sturdy construction to withstand our harsh November and December weather. Volunteers will build mannequins and maintaining them from year to year. Volunteers are needed to enjoy working with wood, metal and other construction materials; • Artistic Committee: Each Dickens Character will be created by volunteer artists. Artistic Volunteers are needed to help create the Dickens faces, which will bring this program to life; • Maintenance Committee: Volunteers are needed to setup and take-down the characters each year and to help maintain the displays in case of heavy snow or ice; and • Program Committee: For people who love to plan a party. Volunteers will create events to be held in tangent with the Dickens Village in November and December.

Trips to Chicago’s ethnic neighborhoods offered

Spend a day focusing on all things Italian or Polish in Chicago with two separate day trips offered by McHenry County College’s Trips and Tours program. Trips include Italian Day featuring Eataly Chicago on Wednesday, Aug. 6, and Polish Day on Sept. 9. • Italian Day will feature Eataly Chicago, an extraordinary market with 23 eateries. It’s a 63,000-square-foot food wonderland, with mozzarella made twice an hour and a variety of fresh and dried pasta, extra virgin olive oil from throughout Italy, meats, fish, cheeses, cookbooks and gifts. Enjoy lunch on your own as you browse through the

market, shopping for goodies to take home. The goal of Eataly is to encourage visitors to assemble an Italian meal at home with the finest and freshest ingredients. Another highlight of the trip is a visit to the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, which celebrates the contributions of Italian American athletes from all over the U.S. Housed in the heart of Little Italy, visitors will be impressed with the scope of the collection. Also, visitors can learn the history of The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii, a neighborhood church on the city’s Near West Side that represents the centerpiece of family life, and rich cultur-

al diversity. Trip leaves MCC at 8 a.m. and returns at 5 p.m. on Aug. 6. Cost is $79. Register using Trip ID: NST S27 008. • Polish Day in Chicago features a visit the Polish Museum of America, one of the largest and oldest ethnic museums in the United States. With more than one million people, Chicago has the largest Polish community outside of Warsaw. Exhibits include Polonia stained glass, folk costumes, remarkably decorated eggs, paintings and sculptures. The museum shop sells a wide variety of Polish arts and crafts. A delicious, hearty lunch buffet is includ-

ed and features traditional Polish specialties at Red Apple, a restaurant where many of the patrons speak Polish. Also visit St. Hyacinth’s, the beautiful basilica where Polish immigrants attend Mass, which is still celebrated in Polish. Stop at a bakery to stock up on delicious Polish baked goods before heading home. Trip leaves MCC at 8 a.m. and returns at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Cost is $99. Register using Trip ID: NST S45 009. To register, call the MCC Registration Office at (815) 455-8588. For more information, call Claudia Terrones at (815) 455-8782.

Lakes Region Historical Society focuses on township veterans HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 2014 • 7

By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

If you are a veteran of the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Lakes Region Historical Society Board is looking for you. “We don’t want to forget these people and how they have served this country,” explained board member Paul I. Hettich. The plan is to create a record of all Antioch Township residents that have served in the two most recent wars as well as those who served at other times. The project officially began on June 17, when the board gathered at the Meeting House at 977 Main St. in Antioch for the formal announcement. The Meeting House is a good place to start this initiative, since this is where local historical military items from past wars are displayed. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion will aid the historical society, but that won’t help them find all veterans. Privacy laws prevent schools from sharing information. The Lakes Region Historical Society must have permission of veterans still living in order to add their information to the record. Many board members are either veterans themselves or have family members who

served. Jan Krumm can name relatives from Antioch the served in the armed forces as far back as the Civil War. That was her great-great grandfather. Her grandfather and his cousin served in WWI. Her father Leo Keisler served in the Pacific during WWII and his brother Elmer served in Europe. Robert Horton was her mother’s brother and he was at D-Day. And Robert Risch, her mother’s cousin served in Korea. Jan Burdick’s husband Vern was in the army for three years in the 1960s. “At that time,” she said, “he worked for the telephone company and his job was waiting for him when he came home. Things were different then.” Board member Bob Wonderling served in Viet Nam. Hettich himself is a veteran of the Vietnam era and served in the army at Fort Jackson, S.C. as a personnel psychologist. His younger son, Philip Hettich, retired after 20 years in the army as chief warrant officer of the 41st Infantry. He was also with the 101st Airborne as an Apache pilot in Iraq. Oldest son, Paul J. Hettich, serves as a colonel in the Army’s 308th civil affairs brigade. What he does seldom makes it on the news. His brigade works to turn the chaos of war or other disruptive

events into order for those who live in the aftermath. “Usually after the disaster,” Paul I. said, “these are the people who go in to make sure that water and electricity are flowing, make sure there is currency for people to use, and they help civilians in the area put things back together. He and his brigade went into areas in Bagdad while it was still a combat zone to get things back on track.” Colonel Paul has also taught others how to do these important things. And he has also contributed some interesting artifacts, like playing cards that were distributed to all soldiers with the faces of terrorists printed on each card to help with identification. Another pack of cards had pictures of important artifacts and encouraged soldiers to treat those items with respect. Not all board members had family in the military or had family members that are not in Antioch Township. But they want to remember and honor those Antioch Township residents who served. One challenge for Lakes Region Historical is the limited space. Part of this project may be to create a video record that shows pictures of veterans with the name. A fundraising effort has begun to renovate 95-yearold Antioch Theatre, 378 Lake St., seen here on June 22. The structure, originally named the Majestic Theatre, opened in 1919 in a post-World War I America and initially featured live entertainment. Its renaming and conversion to a movie theater took place five years later. The theatre closed its doors on May 16 of this year, requiring much-needed maintenance. A new Kickstarter fundraising campaign has started with the hopes of raising enough capital to add an additional 29-seat boutique theatre, preserve the historic balcony, update to digital movie projection and sound, and add and update safety features amongst many other improvements. To learn more about the effort to save this historic Antioch landmark, visit the renovation website at http://www.antiochtheatre. com.

Three Brothers Theatre brings Southern charm to Lake County who raised the girls, is on his death bed. This heartwarming, riveting, and sometimes farcical play explores how sisters, no matter the situation, share a special bond. As the sisters’ secrets are revealed throughout “Crimes of the Heart,” so is the humor, the warmth and the brilliance of this poignant story. Recent University of Chicago graduate Eric Showmacher directs this powerful cast that includes Emily Jusino, Emilia Hodges, Michael Kreiser and Caitlin Robertson. “Crimes of the Heart” is part of the second season

for Three Brothers Theatre in downtown Waukegan. The season has a common thread, “Stories of the Silver Screen.” All the productions were either adapted for film or adapted from film. “Crimes of the Heart” was nominated for three Oscars for its 1986 film. At 4:41 a.m. on June 16, the Antioch Police Department responded to a disturbance at the 800 block of Main Street for two subjects who had struck the complainant and pointed a rifle at him. The complainant admitted that he was speaking to the subjects, whom he knew as Kimble B. Menard Jr., 24, and Trey A. Wright, 24, of Antioch, when an argument began over an illegal drug transaction. Officers canvassed the area and observed one of

the offenders, Menard, run away from officers and discard a long gun near the railroad tracks. Officers secured the unknown make .22 rifle and set up a perimeter for Menard. Officers requested assistance from surrounding areas in order to apprehend Menard. After an extensive search and investigation, both Wright and Menard were located and transported to the Antioch Police Department. Both Menard and Wright provided post Miranda state-

ments and were subsequently charged. Menard was charged with the following: Unlawful Use/Possession of Weapon by a Felon – Class 2 Felony, Unlawful Aggravated Assault – Class 4 Felony. A Class 2 Felony is punishable by three to ten years in a State Penitentiary and/or a Fine of up to $25,000, upon conviction. A Class 4 Felony is punishable by one to three years in a State Penitentiary and/or a Fine of up to $25,000, upon conviction.

Wright was charged with the following: Battery – Class A Misdemeanor. A Class A misdemeanor is punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500 upon conviction. Wright was released on a $1,500 Personal Recognizance Bond with a July 9 Waukegan court date. Menard was transported to the Lake County Bond Court where he was remanded on a $100,000 cash bond pending a July 9 return court date at 1:30 p.m.

Fox Lake Firemen’s Festival returns for a weekend of fun By Gregory Harutunian CORRESPONDENT

The street and area around Fire Station No. 2 at 114 Washington Street in Ingleside will be closed off, during the weekend of June 28-29, to accommodate the expected crowds enjoying the 56th annual Fox Lake Firemen’s Festival, a summer highlight for the village. Between the team water fights pump hoses on barrels, live music, games for families, and of course, grilled foods, what’s not to like? “It’s something that we always look forward to putting on, since it’s a great chance for everyone to come out, visit with friends, and have a great time,” said Ron Hoehne, the Fox Lake Fire Protection District’s chief. “As the years roll along, it keeps gaining in popularity, and this year, we have water fighting teams coming from all over. “There are competing teams from firefighting companies in Wisconsin and Illinois, coming out to show their prowess with the tank hoses on the barrels, that’s Saturday and the teams from local businesses are in the Sun. contests. Those two events are the most popular, and fun to watch.”

Another popular spot is the beer garden with its patio and relaxed atmosphere. Music will be provided by a Wauconda-based country rock band on Sun, from 8 p.m. until midnight, with a set aside area for dancing. The Fox Lake Village Board unanimously approved an outdoor music variance, during its June 11 business session, for the fire protection district to have the band. Also, at the same meeting, the board unanimously voted to approve an ordinance that extended their agreement with the fire protection district for another year, which included the transfer of two ambulances to their control, as part of the roster of equipment and vehicles. “This is the important part of the whole festival for us, since all of the proceeds are directed to the maintenance and rehabilitation of the equipment, keeping it in excellent working condition for calls in, and out of, the service area,” said Hoehne. “The festival is one of the major fundraising arms for the district, and we’re so appreciative of the community’s support, at that time.” The present list of fire-

fighting equipment extends to the increased number of ambulances, three engines, two tankers, one ladder truck, three boats (including an air-propeller boat), three grass-fire vehicles, three adjunct vehicles, one diver van, and one squad truck. The district is part of the Mutal Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), which includes and connects all the departments in northeastern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin on a call system for various emergency response needs. Fox Lake is at the top of the response list for its wellknown diving rescue team, with resources that have grown over the years to include state-of-the-art equipment and van for mobile capabilities. The department also has crews for emergencies like hazardous materials response, below ground rescue, and wild land firefighters. The Fox Lake Volunteer Fire Department is also an integral part of pulling the festival together each year, in addition to helping generate funds for the district through other events such as weekly bingo games at their Ingleside hall.

Lakes Region Historical Society focuses on township veterans

CORRESPONDENT

There will be raffles, cash prizes and auction items. The 140-mile ride will meet at the Lake Villa VFW, 2050 S. Eastwood Drive. For questions call or text Bill at (847) 3667638. events into order for those who live in the aftermath. For more information regarding that process, call

(847) 395-4912. Board member Holly Garvey will soon have a link up on the historical society website to add information. That address is

http://lakesregionhistory.org/. The Meeting House is open on the first Saturday of every month from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and other times by ap-

pointment. The Museum, located at 817 Main St., is open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and at other times by appointment.

FEMA awards $914,519 grant to McHenry County Hazard mitigation funds will be used to acquire and demolish 10 flood prone structures

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released $914,519 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds to McHenry County, for the acquisition and demolition of 10 residential structures in the Nippersink Creek floodplain. Following demolition, these properties will be maintained as permanent open space in the community. “The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program enables communities to implement critical mitigation measures to reduce the risk of loss of life and

property,” said FEMA Region V Acting Administrator Janet Odeshoo. “The acquisition and demolition of these structures permanently removes them from the floodplain and greatly reduces the financial impact on individuals and the community when future flooding occurs in this area.” “Approval of this grant is good news for these McHenry County residents who have been devastated by flooding many times in the past,” said Jonathon Monken, director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. “The grant

will enable them to move out of the floodplain and avoid future heartache and property losses.” HMGP provides grants to state and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures. Through HMGP, FEMA will pay 75 percent of the $1,219,359 eligible project cost. The remaining 25 percent of the funds, $304,840, will be provided by non-federal sources. Follow FEMA online at twitter.com/femaregion5, www.facebook.com/fema, and www.youtube.com/fema.
