Eddie Cash Music Hall opens in Powers Lake Also performing will be Nino the Magician

By Annette Newcomb EDITOR

There’s an old Johnny Cash song, “I’ve Been Everywhere” that traces some of his stored adventures, but he might as well have written the song for his friend Eddie Cash. If anyone has been everywhere, it’s Eddie Cash, who is no relation to Johnny. Now Eddie Cash can add Powers Lake to the long list of distinguished venues he has helped put on the map. Eddie Cash, who has performed with most of the major performers in the music industry of the 50s, 60s and 70s, hosted his own show in Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe for 30 years, 10 years in Branson, eight years at the Belfry Theater in Williams Bay. He is now bringing his Portraits of Music to the area. He has joined forces with Nino Cruz, known as Nino the Magician and Ed Klein, whose father owned and operated Uncle Ed’s BBQ Grill and Catering. Uncle Ed’s former restaurant has been transformed into a Vegas/Cabaret-style entertainment theater

at N1530 Powers Lake Road, Powers Lake/Genoa City. Cash said it’s a wonderful cooperative effort, combining his Portraits of Music with Nino’s Mindbender Magic Show and the culinary styling’s of Ed Klein. The Eddie Cash Show will be performed at 8 p.m. on Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays, May 1 through Labor Day. In the fall and winter the shows will be performed at 7 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays, unless the Packers are playing, then the show will be held several hours later. As Cash says, “Even I can’t compete against the Green Bay Packers!” Nino, who performs at the Grand Geneva on Saturdays at 7 p.m. and at Bobby Rockets on Fridays, will perform at the Eddie Cash Music Hall on Friday nights at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at 2 p.m. The Saturday matinee is geared toward families and is perfect for children’s parties, Nino said. Nino is known as a master magician, mind reader and world’s fastest hypnotist. As for food, Klein, who is

a professionally-trained chef who graduated from culinary school in Evanston, Ill., studied with German chefs and also picked up a few tricks from his late father, will have a variety of appetizers available for purchase prior to the show. Items such as Uncle Ed’s Ribs, grilled chicken quesadilla, white cheddar cheese curls, baked stuffed mushrooms, chicken DeJohnge and char-grilled cold veggie platter. Beer and wine are also available. Full dinners can be prepared but must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance. The serving stops when the shows begin. “This is not a restaurant and you can’t walk in and order beer or something to eat. You can only get in here if you have a ticket for a show,” said Cash. Cash also does not want the audience to have to strain to hear the show over the din of kitchen clatter and diners. So the kitchen closes when the show begins. Tickets are $12 general admission; seniors 60 and over are $11; groups of 20 or more, $10 each. The theater can

only hold 110 people and reservations are strongly encouraged. “I don’t want folks to drive out here and then be disap-

pointed. I really want them to cost have yet to be worked as of this writing. call first,” said Cash. “We are offering the people Another attraction will be seasonal pontoon boat rides See MUSIC, Page 6 on Powers Lake. Details and

Bats among us: Protect your family from rabies exposure McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) reminds residents that bat season is here so it’s time to think about protecting your family and pets from rabies exposure. If a bat is found in the home, contain the bat in a room by closing the door or placing a blanket on it and immediately calling Animal Control (815-459-6222). In order to test bats for rabies, it is important they be in good condition (i.e., head is intact) – either alive or recently de-

ceased. Only in cases of confirmed exposure will bats be submitted for testing, according to Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) protocol. Specimens in good condition and test negative for rabies eliminates the need for rabies treatment following human exposure. So far, in 2014, no bats tested positive for rabies in McHenry County. Last year, MCDH reported two rabid bats, with IDPH reporting 55 state-wide. The best way to avoid ra-

bies is to avoid exposure. For questions about exposure or to determine the need for treatment, call MCDH’s Communicable Disease Program at (815) 334-4500. Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system and can only be confirmed in a laboratory. Keeping cats and dogs up to date with vaccinations will not only keep them from getting rabies, but also provide a barrier of protection for you if your animal is bitten by a ra-

bid animal. Most bats leave in the fall or winter to hibernate so these are the best times to “bat-proof” your home. A fact sheet on bat exclusion can be viewed at www.mcdh.info. Residents are encouraged to take a “hands off” approach to wild animals to reduce their risk of exposure. Children should also be educated about the dangers. For more on rabies, visit the Illinois Department of Public Health www.idph.state.il.us/public/ hb/hbrabies.htm.

Pool opens June 7

With the waterslide in the background, painters apply lane stripes in the pool at the Antioch Aqua Center in Williams Park, 741 Main St., on May 25. The painting, which entailed putting on two coats of white epoxy over all pool areas and two coats for the stripes, was delayed by the inclement spring weather that nagged the village earlier this year. As a result, the opening of the pool will be delayed one week until Saturday, June 7.

The Cop on Rooftop event at Dunkin’ Donuts to raise money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois is Friday, May 30, from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies, Corrections Offi-

cers, Court Security Officers, and Reserve Deputies will stake out the Dunkin’ Donuts located at 34484 N. Route 45 in Third Lake to raise awareness for Special Olympics Illinois. This is a statewide fundraising event in which law enforcement agencies

Memorial Day observed

Lt Col Bernard J. Smith, USAF, Retired, (third from left), meets with friends and family after the Memorial Day observance at the Antioch VFW Post 4551, 75 North Ave., on May 26. Smith, a 20-year Air Force veteran, who also flew for American Airlines for over 18 years, was the featured speaker at the gathering. His multimedia presentation dealt with the SR-71 aircraft in which Smith logged over 1,000 hours. The VFW surprised Smith by inviting his classmate at Coe College, Chief Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit, John T. Phillips, far left, to the event. The two had not seen each other in over 40 years. Hundreds of area residents were in attendance at the pancake breakfast which preceded the program through the 21-gun salute and playing of Taps which concluded it. To learn more about supporting Antioch’s veterans, visit the VFW website at http://antiochvfw.com. OPEN to the PUBLIC No Membership Fee

“So, when people come to my show they are getting a music show accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra that is usually only available in Vegas.” In 1992 Cash and his wife opened his 53 one-act musicals in Branson, Mo. The Portraits of Music is Cash’s way of telling stories about the musicians he worked with. “We have put together something you can’t find any where else. It’s treasury of what I have seen through my entire career, set to music.” Cash says he never gets tired of taking about his career or the musicians he has performed with. At 73, his eyes twinkle as he recalls dates, locations, names. It’s as if it all happened yesterday. Cash will share stories and sing the songs of Elvis, Bobby Darrin, Nat King Cole, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Buddy Holly, Marty Robbins, Frank Sinatra, Jackie Wilson, Tom Jones Eddy Arnold and more. Call Cheryl at (262) 2796673 to make your reservations.

Associate Judge named in Lake County David C. “Chris” Lombardo of Vernon Hills will become the next associate judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit according to Chief Judge John T. Phillips. Michael Tardy, Director of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts notified Judge Phillips early today that Lombardo had received the majority number of votes cast and is declared eligible for appointment to serve as one of Lake County’s twenty four associate judges. “Chris’s knowledge of the law, courtroom preparedness, and professional demeanor are characteristics that will serve him well as a judge,” said Judge Phillips. “We congratulate Chris and look for-

ward to him joining the 19th Circuit in the very near future.” Born in St. Louis, Lombardo graduated from St. Louis Priory High School. He received his undergraduate degree from DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind., and earned his Juris Doctor in 1991 from St. Louis University Law School. Having been admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1997, Lombardo started his law career as a felony trial attorney in the Missouri Public Defender’s Office in Clayton, MO where he stayed for five years handling criminal defense litigation. After spending the next year with Missouri law firm

Wittner, Poger, Rosenblum handling criminal and civil cases, Lombardo joined the Lake County Public Defender’s office in 1997. Mr. Lombardo went into the private practice of law in 2000, to the present time, where he has represented numerous clients in various types of cases in criminal, civil and family law. Lombardo is a member of the Lake County and Illinois State Bar Associations and the Justinian Society. Recently, he received the distinction of being “highly recommended” by members of the Lake County Bar Association. His appointment as Associate Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit is effective June 16, 2014.

Dwier Brown to appear at Simmons Field for ‘Field of Dreams Night’

Eliminate the source, remember the repellent for mosquito season

The Kenosha Kingfish have announced “Field of Dreams Night on Monday, June 2, which will feature a celebrity appearance from Dwier Brown, the actor who played John Kinsella, Kevin Costner’s father in the 1989 film Field of Dreams. Brown will be at Simmons Field as the Kingfish take on the Madison Mallards and will be available to sign autographs, take pictures and will throw out a ceremonial first pitch. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the classic film and Brown wrote a book titled “If You Build It..., a book about Fathers, Fate and the Field of Dreams. Autographed copies of the book will be on sale the day of the game. Gates open at 6:05 p.m. on Monday, June 2 and the Kingfish will also feature Hot

window screens fit tightly and that all holes are repaired. • Apply insect repellent that includes DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535 according to label instructions; consult a physician before using repellents on infants. County residents may report areas of stagnant water (conducive for mosquito breeding) as well as locations of dead birds, or learn more about the signs and symptoms of West Nile encephalitis by calling the West Nile hotline number: (847) 377-8300. While most people infected with WNV have no symptoms of illness, some may become ill, usually three to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. In some individuals, particularly the elderly, the virus can cause muscle weakness, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, coma or death. The Health Department conducts a multi-faceted mosquito surveillance program in Lake County. Beginning in late spring and continuing into the autumn, a series of traps are set around the county, including within the Lake County Forest Preserves. At each site a pool, or batch, of mosquitoes is tested weekly for West Nile virus. Areas of stagnant water are also investigated throughout the season for the presence of mosquito larvae, specifically from the Culex mosquito which is the primary carrier of West Nile in Illinois. Finally, the locations of dead birds are monitored to assist in the assessment of potential West Nile virus activity. The Health Department works closely with municipalities, townships and the Lake County Forest Preserve District in monitoring the mosquitoes that may pose a public health threat. Information about WNV can be found on the Department’s Web site at: http://health.lakecountyil.gov/Population/Pages/ West-Nile-Virus.aspx.

With the spring rains come opportunities for mosquitoes to breed. The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is encouraging residents to be vigilant about eliminating sources for mosquitoes to breed as well as using protection to avoid contracting West Nile virus. Most people become infected with West Nile virus by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds and then spread the virus to humans and other animals. In 2013, five human cases of West Nile virus were reported in Lake County. “The five human cases reported last year remind us that it is still important for residents to protect themselves against West Nile virus,â€? said Tony Beltran, the Health Department’s Executive Director. “We can do this by protecting ourselves against mosquito bites and ensuring that the environment around us is not conducive to mosquito breeding.â€? Recommendations to prevent mosquito breeding include: • Discard old tires, buckets, drums or any water holding containers; poke holes in tires used as bumpers on docks. • Keep roof gutters and downspouts clear of debris. • Keep trash containers covered. • Empty plastic wading pools at least once a week and store indoors when not in use. • Drain unused swimming pools. • Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water. • Change the water in bird baths and plant urns at least once a week. • Store boats upside down or drain rainwater weekly. Recommendations to prevent mosquito bites include: • Wear light-colored clothing that minimizes exposed skin and provides some protection from mosquito bites. • Make sure door and

Uncle Ed’s former restaurant has been

transformed into a Vegas/ Cabaret-style entertainment theater at N1530 Powers Lake Road, Powers Lake/ Genoa City. The Saturday matinee is geared toward families and is perfect for children’s parties,

Nino said. Nino is known as a master magician, mind reader and world’s fastest hypnotist. As for food, Klein, who is a professionally-trained chef who graduated from culinary school in Evanston, Ill., studied with German chefs and also picked up a few tricks from his late father, will have a variety of appetizers available for purchase prior to the show. Cash also does not want the audience to have to strain

to hear the show over the din of kitchen clatter and diners. So the kitchen closes when the show begins. Tickets are $12 general

admission; seniors 60 and couraged. “I don’t want folks to over are $11; groups of 20 or more, $10 each. The theater drive out here and then be can only hold 110 people and See MUSIC, Page 6 reservations are strongly en-

(Continued from front page) directing the lights and sound for Tom Jones’ Vegas performances. Cash will share stories and sing the songs of Elvis, Bobby Darrin, Nat King Cole, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Buddy Holly, Marty Robbins, Frank Sinatra, Jackie Wilson, Tom Jones, Eddy Arnold and more. Doors opened quickly and he began making a name for himself. Another band later and then a phone call from Newport, Arkansas, inviting Cash to play with a young fellow who was changing his name to Conway Twitty. Opportunities continued as Cash learned the ropes of the music industry, honed his skills, and worked with an amazing list of musicians. In 1966 he was offered his first contract to perform in Vegas. It was a 10-day contract that lasted 18 years. While there Cash realized his small combo would not have the same impact, as a 40-piece orchestra would surrounding him. According to his biography, Cash recalled the powerful musical sound that accompanied Siegfried and Roy. Their music was sequenced on computers and Cash decided that’s what he needed. It was made possible under the direction of his talented wife Cheryl, whom he met in Vegas while she was

Details and cost have yet to be worked as of this writing. “We are offering the people something they would have to travel to Branson or Vegas to see and it’s right in their own backyard,” said Cash. “I saw some of the great musicians of our time start their careers from the back seat, because I was right there with them,” Cash said. Growing up in Memphis in the 40s and 50s, he was at the right place at the right time to see some those musicians begin their own careers. At 15, Cash began to associate with musicians who hung around Sun Records. The same place musicians such as Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, B.B. Phone app and web site notify Lake County beachgoers of swim bans levels in the water are high, the Health Department notifies the beach’s manager and a sign is posted indicating a swim ban is in place. Since elevated bacteria levels may result in lake water after a rainfall that washes pollutants into the lake, the Health Department advises residents to avoid swimming after a large rain event. Most swimming-related illnesses typically cause short-term health problems and usually are not reported to or treated by health providers. The most common illness is gastroenteritis, which causes diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain that typically develop one to two days after exposure. Other illnesses include ear, eye, nose and throat infections. Skin parasites such as ringworm and schistosomiasis (swimmers itch) can be transmitted in areas of water degradation. Although there are many serious illnesses transmitted through water, swimmers are rarely exposed to these more serious diseases in the United States. For more information on beach monitoring, please call Lake County Health Department’s Environmental Services at (847) 377-8030.

Hundreds of area residents were in attendance at the pancake breakfast which preceded the program through the 21-gun salute and playing of Taps which concluded it. This year, beachgoers have a new option for learning the latest news on swim bans at public beaches. In addition to the Lake Michigan swim bans posted on the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center website, beachgoers will be able to obtain information through an Android phone application created by the Great Lakes Commission. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, daily information is available about local Lake Michigan and inland lake swim bans through the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center’s website by visiting: http://health.lakecountyil. gov/Population/LMU/Pages/ Beach-Advisory.aspx. The Health Department is sending information about Lake Michigan swim bans to the Great Lakes Commission, which has created a free phone application called myBeachCast available at http://glin.net/beachcast/ for beaches in the eight Great Lakes states of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. The phone app not only tells whether the beach is open or closed, but also temperature, humidity, visibility and wind speed at each beach. “The Health Department’s Lakes Management Unit monitors just over 100 Lake Michigan and inland lake beaches throughout the summer to ensure that the water is acceptable for swimming,” said Mike Adam, senior biologist with the Lake County Health Department/ Community Health Center. “When our water sampling tests indicate a high bacteria count, a swim ban is issued to keep people out of the water until the water quality improves. High bacteria counts may be caused by stormwater runoff, sewage overflow, nearby septic failure or large quantities of droppings from geese or seagulls.” Throughout the summer, Health Department staff

Uncle Ed’s former restaurant has been transformed into a Vegas/Caba-

ret-style entertainment theater at N1530 Powers Lake Road, Powers Lake/Genoa City. Nino is known as a master magician, mind reader and

world’s fastest hypnotist. As for food, Klein, who is a professionally-trained chef who graduated from culinary school in Evanston, Ill., studied with German chefs and also picked up a few tricks from his late father, will have a variety of appetizers available for purchase prior to the show. Tickets are $12 general

admission; seniors 60 and over are $11; groups of 20 or more, $10 each. The theater can only hold 110 people and reservations are strongly en-

couraged. Another attraction will be “I don’t want folks to drive seasonal pontoon boat rides out here and then be disap- on Powers Lake. Details and pointed. I really want them to See MUSIC, Page 6 call first,” said Cash.

Richmond Wine Walk scheduled Can you picture yourself enjoying the unique shops and businesses of Richmond on a beautiful summer day? The Wine Walk in Richmond will be held on Saturday, June 28, and the public is encouraged to participate. This year’s event is being held in conjunction with the Richmond Fine Arts Festi-

val. Tickets are already on sale at Anderson’s Candy Shop, Olive Black Martini and Wine Lounge and the Richmond-Spring Grove ANNETTE NEWCOMB The Hi Liter Chamber Office. The cost is $35 and includes The Eddie Cash Music Hall has opened in nearby Powers Lake. Eddie Cash (second wine tasting, food, a commemorative glass and your choice of a bottle of wine to take from right) is joined by Nino the Magician and chef Ed Klein (far left). The Vegas-style theater will include performances by Cash and Nino and food by Klein. Pontoon boat home with you.

Four Squires QUITTING rides will also be offered.

Spring Grove Post Office warns customers about postal scam and contain fraudulent information about an attempted or intercepted package delivery. The e-mails instruct customers to click on a link to find out when they can expect delivery. But Spring Grove Postmaster Monika Pecha is asking customers not to do it. “We want to keep our customers safe,” said Pecha. “Lately, we’ve been receiving complaints from customers about receiving e-mails about missing delivery.” Like most viruses sent by e-mail, clicking on the link or opening the attachment

will activate a virus that can steal information, such as a customer’s user name, password and financial account information. What to do? Simply delete the message without taking any further action. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is working hard to resolve the issue and shut down the malicious program. “If you’re not sure about the e-mail you received, you can delete the message or contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service,” adds Pecha.
