OUR TOWN 2014-15

Welcome to East Troy! As I write this, I will be coming up on a full year as the editor of the East Troy newspapers. It’s been my pleasure to get to know the community and its residents. Small-town life is at its finest here and the annual events I’ve been able to attend over the past 10 months have shown what a wonderful place East Troy is to live. From the Cycling Classic to the Santa Train, the offerings in the community have something for everyone to enjoy. The energy and excitement on the square during the big events like the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce’s Memorial Weekend Corn and Brat Roast or the Lions Club Fourth of July parade and accompanying weekend events, and the Chamber’s Bluegrass Festival make this the place to be on the summer holidays. Speaking of summer, East Troy plays host to one of the nation’s largest outdoor amphitheaters and welcomes big-name acts like the Dave Matthews Band, Jimmy Buffett and in 2014, Kiss and Def Leppard. And in the winter, the Alpine Valley Ski Resort opens its hills for thrills and chills. Other local attractions include the East Troy Electric Railroad, the East Troy Municipal Airport and Sky Nights Sport Parachute Club,

which members can often be seen floating down from the sky on their brightly colored parachutes. It’s also been a joy to get to know the leaders in the community. The dedicated men and women who serve on the area boards are always helpful and willing to go the extra mile for the residents. One of the things that makes East Troy great is the support the community gives to the youth. School events are packed with excited family and friends cheering on the students. And nothing beats the bus rides up to the state competitions when the High School teams make the championships. The community support for youth groups like the Patronum Bot (see page 13) and the Buddy Bench at the elementary schools is heartwarming. The business community steps up to the plate on a regular basis around here, too. Local leaders like Dave Strand (see page 5) make it a priority to give back whenever possible. I can say from experience, East Troy is a community that welcomes new faces with open arms and warm smiles. Thank you!

WISCONSIN OVEN NAMES NEW BUILDING AFTER DAVID STRAND TRACY OUELLETTE East Troy Our Town

Wisconsin Oven Corporation employees celebrate the completion of its 30,000 square foot addition with a ribbon cutting and reception on June 11, 2014. Wisconsin Oven has been manufacturing the industrial heat-treating equipment for 40 years. The new facility is suited for manufacturing equipment for the automotive, aerospace, mining and energy industries with two 20-ton cranes and two 10-ton cranes.

Wisconsin Oven Corporation By Tracy President David Strand was Ouellette surprised June 11, 2014, when Editor company owner Philippe Blandineres named the new building at its 2675 Main St. site after him. “I had no idea he was going to do it,” Strand said. “It was very touching. We had been talking about what to name the building and I wanted to name it after the employees and gave him some suggestions but he didn’t tell me what he was planning. I was definitely caught off guard.” Strand, 48, is a livelong resident of East Troy and lives in the area with his wife Andrea and his two stepchildren. He also has three children grown children from a previous marriage. An active member of the community, Strand served on the East Troy School Board for eight years and was president of the board for some on his tenure. He is also on the board of directors for the United Way of Walworth County. Strand owned Wisconsin Oven until 2012, when he sold the company to Blandineres to

help raise funds to pay off some existing debt because of the retirement of the founder and former shareholders. “He approached me to buy the company in 2006 and I refused at the time, but we found we had a lot in common and we became great friends,” Strand said. “He still wanted to be part of Wisconsin Oven, so he joined our board of directors and I joined his board of directors in France,” Strand said. The relationship benefitted both parties, said Strand, and when it came to sell, Blandineres was waiting. In a speech given at the official opening of the new building June 11, Blandineres said Strand represented everything that made the company successful. He said Strand’s efforts to work his way up from the bottom exemplified what makes the United States a great country and his hard work was a credit to his character. He said Strand began working with the company 28 years ago in the shop and was made a plant manager six years later, four years after that he was named vice-president

of operations and 10 years later president and owner. “When Dave began his nine-year tenure as president he helped lead this struggling team to a record year and a plant expansion was put on to the standard division in 2008. “Following the expansion came one of the worst global recessions any of us have ever seen. Under Dave’s leadership he navigated this team through a very difficult time. Many difficult decisions and heartaches took place throughout 2009. With a 50 percent reduction in sales this company was still able to survive.” Tuesday Strand said 2009 was a difficult year for the company but he wasn’t going to let the recession take his company down. “I was determined to do whatever it took. I cut all the salaries from 30 to 50 percent depending on the position and I took a large pay cut, too,” he said. “We did some restricting during that time and there were a lot of difficult decisions made and a lot of hard feelings.” SEE

Expanded operations means more jobs

5

WISCONSIN OVEN FROM PAGE 5 But the strategy paid off. Five years later, the company has experienced record growth in each consecutive year and saw the need to expand operations to keep up with demand. Strand said they began working on the expansion about this time last year when they realized they couldn’t keep up with the orders with their facility. “It was critical to keep growing, 75 percent of our business is repeat customers and we can’t turn our back on them,” he said. Strand said they wanted to bring the operations that were housed in a leased plant in Waukesha to East Troy and building a new facility would enable them to do that. “The village was very cooperative with us,” Strand said. “There were some height restrictions in the community and they made sure to meet our needs by making some exceptions.” Ground was broken for the new plant in the midst of one of the harshest winters in recorded history, but it didn’t put construction behind a single day, said Strand. “I can’t say enough about Anderson Ashton, they worked right through the cold.” “We’re projecting 2014 to be our largest year ever,” Strand said. “We’re right back to the staffing levels we were in 2008 and we expect to add at least 25 more employees by the end of the year.

TRACY OUELLETTE East Troy Our Town

Dave Strand (far right) is surprised when Wisconsin Oven owner Blandineres announces the company’s newest building will be named the Dave Strand Building.

Strand, who owned the company until 2012, said the real credit to the company’s comeback need to go to the employees. “None of this was possible without the championship team that is our employees,” he said. “It’s all about your people and we have the best work ethic in the business and they’ve given us the ability to be a leader in the industry.” That feeling of community extends

further than just the company. Wisconsin Oven is known in the area for being a generous supporter of the United Way of Walworth County and each year Strand puts up $5,000 of his own money and Wisconsin Oven matches it for a $10,000 scholarship to a graduating East Troy High School senior. This year’s recipient was Nichole Zazula. Jeffrey Luttropp won the $1,500 Wisconsin Oven Distributing Scholarship.

PATRONUM BOTS EARN CHAMPION STATUS By Tracy Ouellette Editor

community outreach and documentation. They included: • Nominations for the PTC Design and Think awards for outstanding robot design; • Motivate Award for the team’s positive efforts and impact with our local community as well as with other FTC teams; • Promote Award for the team’s one-minute video that focuses on how FIRST is building female leaders through all of its programs; • Third Place Inspire Award – the highest award given at an FTC competition. This award recognizes the teams that excel in all aspects of the FTC program; and • Named Undefeated Alliance Champion for the FTC North Super Regional. Top 5 ranking The Patronum Bots competed in the World Championship for the FIRST Tech Challenge program in St. Louis on April 23-26. The team was recognized as one of the top 5 teams at the World Championship and named a finalist for the Inspire Award, the highest award presented at an FTC competition. Only 128 out of more than 3,300 FTC teams are invited to the World Championship. Of those 128 teams, only five teams are considered for the Inspire Award. The Patronum Bots team was also a finalist for the PTC Design Award, which recognizes teams for solid design principles and won the Think Award, which is given to the team that has the

most comprehensive Engineering Notebook that documents their robot design, outreach efforts and business plan/fundraising. In the schools Even though the girls on the Patronum Bot team are busy preparing for the World Championship, they still find time to volunteer in the East Troy School District. Because of the team’s success and the efforts of the Hunters, FIRST LEGO League was instituted at East Troy Middle School at part of the curriculum this school year. “One of the things we’re proudest of is that we have it in the schools I can’t begin to say how excited we are especially since in this smaller district and we don’t have an established STEM program,” said Meg. “Our team helped develop curriculum, trained the teachers, and have been volunteering in the classroom every day.” The program began in the fall and it is required for all sixth graders in the district and is an elective for grades 7-8. “We’re the first in the county

to infuse all three components of FIRST LEGO League into a middle school curriculum,” said Meg. “For every child to have a robot in their hands is just amazing for East Troy,” said Meg. For Meg, LEGO League in the schools is a no-brainer. “It teaches real-world problem solving, cause if your robot breaks guess who gets to fix it,” she said. The Patronum Bots were visited by national representative of FIRST – Betsy Daniels and Jinnel Choiniere – in February after their work in the Middle School was noticed. “These young women, surrounded by 100’s of photos from their FIRST experience, recognize they have the power to change the world, and there is no doubt each will do it in their own way … It is a privilege to know them, watch as they inspire others around them and know both their future and ours is in truly honorable hands,” wrote Daniels after her visit. In a field that tends to attract more boys than girls, the allgirls Patronum Bots team from East Troy took first place in the FIRST Tech Challenge North Super Regional in Iowa April 3-5, 2014. The girls – Lauren Hunter, Emerson Dignan, Rachel Hunter, Brianna Fridley, Caitlin Hunter – performed with poise and grace at the regional championship, said coach Meg Hunter. They were challenged in the qualifying rounds. At one point one of the winch motors on the robot burned out and the girls had to replace it. The robot performed well in the qualifying rounds, but the team had several losses to the top-ranked teams in their division. “Even though we weren’t able to win some of those matches, we attracted the attention of some of the higher ranked teams based on our strong robot performance,” wrote coach Shawn Hunter, Meg’s husband, in the Patronum Bots newsletter. The girls hung in there and the team was the second pick of the first-seeded alliance, which consisted of the Patronum Bots, The Bombers and Infinite Resistance teams. The three teams were undefeated in the elimination rounds to earn the regional title, even with some challenges, including the loss of the robot’s “brain” which the girls had to replace with a backup. In addition to the robot competition the Patronum Bots were presented with several awards in areas of design,
