COME TO BURLINGTON FOR A

taste of all things chocolate Burlington opens its doors Memorial Day Weekend and invites the public to its annual ChocolateFest. “The World of Chocolate” runs May 23-26, takes on an international theme this year, but chocolate remains the star of the show. The Chocolate Experience Tent will again be dedicated to the creamy confection with a plethora of vendors, contests and events. Among the new activities are Choco-Pong (think a wholesome version of the college drinking game) and a Chocolate Hunt Around the World. The popular Chef Meltdown competition returns along with chocolate cooking demonstrations, eating contests and the Chocolate Marketplace. But even the rare person who doesn’t love chocolate will find plenty of fun at ChocolateFest. Three stages offer nearly continuous entertainment – from the All-American Lumberjack Show to live music performances by artists such as Pat McCurdy and the popular Toys – for all tastes. And if that’s not enough, consider some of the other events such as a Friday night fireworks display, the Jaycees arts and crafts fair and the community Memorial Day parade. And, for the daredevils among us,

there’s the Burlington Rotary Carnival featuring North American Midway Entertainment, which many consider to be the best traveling outdoor amusement park in the country. The best part of ChocolateFest? The festival is a major fundraiser for many of the area’s non-profit organizations that provide the volunteer workforce for the festival. Last year ChocolateFest generated nearly $100,000 for these groups, who poured the money back into a variety of community programs and services. Since it’s inception in 1989, the festival has generated more than $2 million for these charitable organizations. Here’s a list of the frequently asked questions regarding the festival: COST OF ADMISSION: Children 4 and under – free; Children 5-12 – $2.50; people over the age of 12 – $8. Tickets are available at the gate, so you will be able to enjoy the festival despite not being about to purchase advance tickets. FESTIVAL HOURS: Wednesday, May 21 – 5p.m.-close – No gate admission fee – carnival only; Thursday, May 22, – 5 p.m. close, no gate admission fee – carnival only; Friday, May 23, 4 p.m.midnight Fireworks at dusk; Saturday, May 24, 10 a.m. – midnight; Sunday, May 25, 10 a.m. – midnight; Monday, May 26, noon – 8 p.m.

EVENTS GALORE: The Chocolate Experience Tent (which houses the chocolate vendors, chef demonstrations, chocolate eating contests, and a variety of family friendly activities) hours are: Friday, May 23, 4 – 9 p.m.; Saturday, May 24, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Sunday, May 25, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Monday 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Chocolate vendors charge for the chocolate items they sell. You may also purchase a Taster Ticket for $6 in the Chocolate Experience Tent that allows you to sample 10 items from pre-determined chocolate vendors. There are various other activities in the Chocolate Tent that are free. All of the festival entertainment is free. COST FOR OTHER ACTIVITIES: In addition to the entrance ticket costs, there are activities that cost additional money. There is a large selection of food and other vendors (T-shirts, etc.) who charge for their fare. We also have a carnival which charges for its rides. You may purchase a wristband to ride unlimited rides during certain time periods. CARNIVAL RIDE WRISTBAND HOURS: (Tickets on site $25) Wednesday 5 p.m. - close; Thursday 5p.m. – close; Friday, not available; Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. – close; Sunday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. – close; Monday noon

– close. Individual tickets for rides are $1.25, 22 tickets for $25, or 55 tickets for $60. HOW MUCH TIME DO I NEED? This all depends on what you chose to do when you get here. Many families return multiple days to see specific entertainment, enjoy carnival rides, and participate in the Chocolate Experience Tent activities. WHO RUNS THE FESTIVAL: Burlington’s ChocolateFest is run completely by volunteers. The volunteers work on behalf of non-profit organizations to earn money for their organization. So, in that sense, dozens of non-profit organization are represented at the festival. Our vendors and the carnival, however, represent themselves (and not our non-profit groups or the festival). The festival operations committee also consists of all volunteers. NO CARRY-INS: Carry-ins are not allowed. BATHROOMS: The festival has portable toilets in various places around the grounds. CARNIVAL RIDES: The festival includes the world’s largest traveling carnival – it is a set-up and take down operation. INFORMATION: See more at: www. chocolatefest.com

This is the 30th year of the local pageant, which is a preliminary competition for Miss Wisconsin and Miss America. The Big Melt Down and more Featured events in the Chocolate Experience Tent

The Chef Melt Down challenges three professional chefs to turn a selection of secret ingredients into an extraordinary threecourse meal, consisting of an appetizer, entree and dessert. All within a time limit. Celebrity emcee John Weiser from Carthage College, admissions coordinator, master of education program will host the competition. This year’s competitors are: Chef Ryan “RC” Schroeder of JR Big Tomatos in Greenbay; Chef Michael Feker, executive chef, culinary instructor, proprietor IL MITO restaurants and catering; and Chef Kirk Silverman of Tuscany Bar & Grill Lake Geneva. The judges this year are last year’s Chef Melt Down $1,000 winner Chef Kevin Rausch of Lake Lawn Resort Delavan, Chef Anthony Signa, Executive Chef Michael Lavin of Gooseberries Fresh Food Market & Courtyard Catering, Burlington, and David Spiegelhoff, director of operations for Spiegelhoff Super Food Market, Inc., Burlington. At the beginning of each round, chefs will be given a basket with four secret ingredients which they must incorporate into their dish,

preparing and plating within a 30-minute window. After each course, a panel of judges will decide which chef’s creation wins that round. Chefs will be preparing an appetizer and an entrée item. Total points will be tallied at the end of the competition and the Chef with the highest score will claim the $1000.00 Grand Prize. Major Melt Down Sponsors include Burlington’s Sentry Foods, Gooseberries Fresh Food Market and Aeppel Treow Winery, plus chocolate from European Imports Limited, Chicago. For more information, visit www.chocolatefest.com. Minute to Win It If you and your family are fans of NBC’s Minute To Win It, or just like to watch people try silly challenges, you won’t want to miss Choco Minute-To-Win-It at Chocolate Fest again this year. Like the popular family game show, contestants will race the clock to successfully complete physical challenges involving everyday items ... and let’s not forget the chocolate. The contest is held on Saturday, May 24,

from 6-8 p.m. and on Sunday, May 25, from 2-4 p.m. on the Main Stage in the Chocolate Experience Tent. Contestants will compete head-to-head for a chance to win a “Jeep for a Week” donated by Lynch Chevrolet, as well as a variety of prizes for reaching determined levels. Five teams of two will compete. The first four rounds are elimination rounds, during which the last team to complete the task is eliminated. The last remaining team of two will attempt the 60-second challenges in an effort to advance to different prize levels, including the” Jeep for a Week”. New this year New to the tent this year is Choco Pong – the family friendly version of an age-old college game will have adults and kids alike “drinking up,” chocolate milk that is! Participants will be chosen out of the crowd at these times at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, and noon on Sunday, May 25 Teams from the crowd to go head to head with teammates bouncing the ping pong ball into the cup in this game of concentration and skill. If you make a shot, the other team has to drink up!

Show off your chocolate-wrapper skills on the runway ChocolateFest offers two fashion-design competitions – an extended, seven-day “make ahead” team competition and an on-the-spot, 30-minute contest, providing festival-goers two ways in which to leave their mark on the local fashion scene. Project Yum-Way, inspired by Bravo’s hit show “Project Runway,” pits teams of designers against each other and the clock in a race to construct a wearable outfit for judging by the audience on the runway. “Project Yum-Way offers on opportunity for design fans and sewing novices alike to be creative while having fun. This is a great event for teens and young adults to get involved in ChocolateFest,” says Emily Mullens, director

of Project Yum-Way and the Flash Mob. On the spot Project Yum-Way’s on-the-spot contest kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, in the Chocolate Experience Tent. Pre-registration is suggested, but not required for the on-the-spot event. Teams of three to five designers will be provided $100 in “mocha money” to purchase yards of candy-wrapper, basic materials and accessories at the festival’s “Chocolate Store.” Each team has 30 minutes to design and construct their outfit. Local fashion experts and sewing masters will consult with and offer advice to teams as they work. Each team’s fashion will be exhibited

down the runway by one of the team’s own members. Only materials provided by contest organizers can be used. Make ahead The make-ahead competition allows pre-registered teams to create their candy-wrapper fashion the week prior to the festival. The fashions will be displayed throughout the weekend, culminating with a candy-wrapper fashion show on Monday, May 26, at 2 p.m. where the winning team will be determined. Prizes will be awarded to all winning teams. For more information, visit www.chocolatefest.com or contact Emily R. Mullens at (262) 744-0990 or emilyrmullens@aol.com.

With the theme of “Peace, Love and Chocolate in 2013, the annual Burlington festival of all things chocolate drew crowds of young an old alike to the ChocolateFest grounds. While the cooler, rainy weather kept attendance down slightly last year, the festival entertained with musical acts, the annual Memorial Day parade, chocolate-eating contests, log rolling competitions and much, much more.
