Welcome to the first LĂşnasa programme! This is a brand-new festival celebrating summertime at The Model. Featuring world-class exhibitions, leading Irish music acts, comedy, surf films and cult classics, and of course events for all the Family, there is something for everyone. Come join the fun! Lúnasa Exhibitions Harun Farocki: Recognition and Tracking Runs until 21 Aug. 2011 Currently showing a comprehensive exhibition at MoMA, New York, Farocki’s work examines the spectacle of the World Cup 2006, electronic surveillance and the use of computer animation and video game technology to train soldiers. Film Screenings of Farocki’s work take place each Thursday at 3pm in The Model Cinema. Don’t miss this chance to one of the world’s leading film-makers first exhibition in Ireland.

The Celtic Twilight Runs until 11 Sep. 2011 Drawn from The Niland Collection, this exhibition explores the clash between the Gaelic Revival and the birth of Modernism in Ireland. The exhibition features many highlights from this prestigious collection and includes the work of Jack B. Yeats, Paul Henry, Louis le Brocquy and Mainie Jellet.

The World of Jack B. Yeats Runs until 11 Sep. 201 The Niland Collection contains the largest holding of Jack B. Yeats work outside the National Gallery of Ireland. This small exhibition presents a survey of his changing themes and tehniques over his long career .

Lúnasa Cult and Classic Surf Films Waveriders

The Endless Summer

Dir: Joel Conroy, 75 mins, IRL, 2008/9 Thu. & Fri. 04 & 05 Aug. 8pm. €8/€6 Locally produced Waveriders is the story of the unlikely Irish roots of the worldwide surfing phenomenon that is big-wave surfing, told through the inspirational and ultimately tragic history of Irish/Hawaiian legendary waterman, George Freeth. Waveriders journeys full-circle from Hawaii to California and back to Irish shores.

Dir: Bruce Brown, 95 mins, USA, 1966 Thu. & Fri. 11 & 12 Aug. 8pm. €8/€6 The crown jewel to ten years of Bruce Brown surfing documentaries. Brown follows two young surfers around the world in search of the perfect wave and ends up finding quite a few, in addition to some colorful local characters.

Surfer’s Choice: Surprise Screening Thu. & Fri. 18 & 19 Aug. 8pm. €8/€6 Female pro-surfer and artist Easkey Britton will present a surprise screening of her choice of classic surf films. Come along on Thursday, meet Easkey and join with us as we anticipate her Surfer’s Choice.

Dir: John Milius, 120 mins,USA, 1978 Thu. & Fri. 25 & 26 Aug. 8pm. €8/€6 Matt Johnson, Jack Barlow, and Leroy Smith are three young California surfers in the 1960s. Ultimately the Vietnam war interrupts their idylic life, leaving them to wonder if they will survive until “Big Wednesday,” the mythical day when the greatest, cleanest, most transcendent wave of all time will come.

Lúnasa Music and Comedy Music Jerry Fish and The Mudbug Club Sat. 06 Aug. 9pm. Tickets: €20 Following Jerry’s massive sell out concert during Sligo Live last year – The Model is delighted to welcome back one of Ireland’s leading troubadours and rabble rousing entertainers. Cross Tom Waits with a circus show band, add a touch of Jacques Brel and Mink de Ville, lather a little Dr. John, Dean Martin and the Fun Loving Criminals and you’re coming close to the sound of the inimitable Jerry Fish and The Mudbug Club. Without question one of the finest live music acts in Ireland today.

Comedy Craic in the Box Joe Rooney & Patrick McDonnell Sat. 13 Aug. 8pm. Tickets: €15/€12 Stand up comedian, voice artist, writer and actor Joe Rooney has many strings to his bow. He is best known for his role as Father Damo in Father Ted and more recently as barfly Timmy from Killinaskully. Joe Rooney has become one of Ireland's most popular “luadars.” His charismatic stand up style is a mixture of hilarious observations on modern Ireland and riproaringly funny musical parodies. Joining him will be Patrick McDonnell, best known as the sickly-sweet Eoin McLove also on Father Ted and his many hilarious characters on ‘Naked Camera’, ‘Stew’ and David McSavage’s hilarious ‘The Savage Eye’ TV show. If you haven’t seen his unique brand of stand-up comedy, you’re missing out.

Túcan

Music Túcan Sat. 20 Aug. 9pm. Tickets: €12 Tucan is an instrumental acoustic guitar based genre splitting band who defy classification. Following the huge success of their “Factory Sessions” videos featuring Daft Punk and Prodigy covers, which took youtube and facebook by storm, Túcan have been working on a new album and entirely new live show, which they will debut as part of The Model’s Lúnasa programme. Join us for this exclusive event which also features a range of special guests.

Tickets: €25 Featuring the virtuoso musical talents of New York pianist Thomas Bartlett, Sean-nós singer Iarla Ó Lionaird, Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill, fiddler and innovator Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and the legendary Martin Hayes, The Gloaming is a collective of remarkable individual talents who share a common musical aesthetic. Coming direct from their international debut at the National Concert Hall, experience the sound of this true Irish super-group, rooted in the ancient yet totally new.

Lúnasa Education Events Outdoor Art Project

The Big Draw

05 - 06 Aug. (1 - 4pm) Free Imagine creating your own contemporary museum. Canadian Artsist-in-Residence Etienne Zack gives a group of 14-20 year olds the opportunity to realise their own utopian model of a contemporary arts centre, projected on to the hoarding of The Model. This project mixes architectural concepts with painting and drawing, in the context of street and urban art. Booking is essential as places are limited.

Parent and Toddler workshop: 2 - 4 year olds 09 - 13 Aug. (10.45am - 11.45 & 12.30 13.30pm) €45 per child (€35 concession) A visual and textual voyage of discovery for 2 - 4 year olds with artist Kate Wilson and guest artists, puppeteer Helene Hugel and composer Cathal Roche. Bring to life your favourite children’s stories and characters through hand-painting, sound, puppetry and movement. An interactive workshop where children are invited to thoroughly explore stories through art, culminating in a magical puppetry performance.

Painting Workshop with Etienne Zack for Over 55s 02 - 04 Aug. (10.30 - 1pm) Free Etienne Zack invites over 55’s to explore with him the Niland Collection in the context of painting as a contemporary art form. Zack will lead a unique painting workshop, which will respond to works in The Niland Collection.

Soundstation A week-long music summer camp for 5-12 year olds. 15 - 19 Aug. (10am - 1pm) €60 per child (Con/Group Bookings €40 per child) A music and movement workshop where children can try their hand at making their very own instruments from recycled materials. Expect lots of banging, plucking, scraping and blowing whilst learning about rhythm, melody & harmonious singing. This workshop also includes improvisation and composition techniques (song-writing, rapping & soundscapes). All children are welcome.

Try your hand at demos running throughout the day with games provided, or bring along your own favourites. Popular and obscure games alike will feature and for the competitive, there will be a gaming tournament. Featuring Chess, Wii, Risk, Xbox, Twister, Monopoly and more, fun for everyone is guaranteed! Children must be accompanied by an adult.
