ED I TO R

Going Big T H E M AY I S S U E I S O U R biggest of the year, at least if you look at it from a numbers perspective. This year we had 216,918 votes for the “Best of the 405” — a number that surpassed last year by nearly 90,000 votes. Our team was thrilled by the growth, but not surprised. The success of the Best Of is contingent, like so many other things going on right now in our city, upon the passion of the people. The votes represent fans, followers, patrons, patients and enthusiasts of all that OKC has to offer. Behind every winner and every nomination is our biggest “Why.” Why do we do what we do here at 405 Magazine? We do it to tell the stories and promote the aspirations of local residents. We do it to continue to invigorate the economy and community we love. We do it to help people’s dreams come true! Our team would like to personally congratulate everyone who was nominated and/ or won a category; because of you, someone in this town’s life is better on some level. Be it as a concert venue, medical specialist or provider of a cup of tea or personal service — you make OKC amazing and you deserve to be recognized!

Thank you all so much for your participation and enthusiasm. It is our honor to present to you 2022’s much-anticipated Best of the 405 (pg. 41). Also in this powerhouse issue, you will find people and businesses breaking down barriers, smashing records and making names for themselves. You will encounter a female veteran fiercely advocating for an empowering VA (pg. 22), a Mother’s Day fashion spread including her adorable children (pg. 24), a breathtaking Mesta Park home design (pg. 34), the exciting local Guatemalan cuisine scene (pg. 78), OKC Ballet’s dazzling upcoming production of Cinderella (pg. 90), and the OU softball star who has the sports world talking (pg. 94). With that, I will wish you a marvelous May! P.S. Don’t forget to call to call your mom.

Meet Miss VA Rochell Alexander’s career as an ambassador for veterans BY K R I S T E N G R A C E P H O T O BY C H A R L I E N E U E N S C H WA N D E R

W H E N Y O U WA L K i nto t he Depa r t ment of Veterans’ Affairs in downtown Oklahoma City, there is a welcome board with a picture of Rochell Alexander wearing her Ambassador red coat. “I’m known as Miss VA,” Alexander said proudly. “I’m an ambassador for the VA. I passionately believe in what we do and the services we prov ide. My cur rent role is to make sure that every employee has a safe working environment, free from discrimination and harassment.” Born and raised in Ok la homa, a nd a n A r my veteran herself, Alexander has been at the VA for 17 years, working her way up from clerk to Equal Employment Opportunities Manager. “Joining the military was one of the best decisions I have ever made,” she said. “I am still reaping the benefits from that decision.” Alexander always wanted to join the Army, but first she had children and graduated from high school, and then she went to college. Near her graduation from community college, recruiters approached her. “I never thought I’d be able to qualify, but they talked me into taking the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery),” she remembered. Alexander scored so high on the test that the next morning she had recruiters on her doorstep. She passed the physical and they placed her with a recruiter in Active Duty.

“I want this to be the place that people choose to come to work, and that veterans choose to come for care. We serve America’s heroes. It is an honor.”

She completed her basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. To do this as a mother, she said, was a special challenge. She had to leave her husband and four children for eight weeks to complete basic training. Every morning she would wake up and say, “I have to do this for my children.” “Basic training makes you realize what you are made of. I made it through with the mindset that I can persevere. I have been given these challenges and I can overcome. And I would choose that route again.” Now working for the VA, Alexander is a fierce advocate of the services that the VA provides. As she put it, “We are no longer your grandfather’s VA. This is a place of comprehensive health care. The VA provides primary health care, dental, vision, pharmacy, a women’s clinic and safe places for mothers to breastfeed their children, along with physical and occupational therapy, support and therapy groups — many solely for women. Next year, we will be able to provide

mammography on-site. We are always expanding the care we provide. Women veterans are our fastest growing demographic, and we want to take good care of them here.” Alexander is very aware that many women veterans have a difficult time accessing services at the VA. Because of MST (Military Sexual Trauma), there are women who have a difficult time even walking through the door. “That’s why we developed the Red Coat Ambassador Program,” she said. “It is available to everyone, but it is especially directed for women veterans. When we know someone is coming, we meet them at the doors in our red coats, take them around, showing them everything, always making sure they feel invited, safe and welcome. “I want this to be the place that people choose to come to work, and that veterans choose to come for care. We serve America’s heroes. It is an honor.” Everything that Rochell Alexander does is designed to help VA employees and veterans access the services they need to empower themselves.

Doing It All Marvelous looks for Mom BY L I N DA M I L L E R

M A N Y MOT H ERS A R E CELEbrated with cards, gifts and flowers in May, though hopefully it’s not the only time. Going forward, maybe her big day should be a reminder for mom to also celebrate herself. Really, for all women to celebrate themselves. To acknowledge their self-worth and to embrace feeling good, looking good and being true to themselves. Many mothers do it all, whether it’s 9 to 5 at the office, owning their own business or juggling a jam-packed schedule that includes carpools, parent-teacher conferences and volunteering … and probably much of everything else that requires attention between sunrise and sunset. Amanda Baker, an Oklahoma City style influencer and content creator of the Gray Details, exemplifies the spirit and passion of today’s mother. She and her husband Ryan have three children — that alone translates to a busy, hectic lifestyle. Add in her popular website posts and social media sites, and that adds up to one hard-working and successful woman. And she loves almost every aspect of her life, even the 50 or so hours she spends each week on the Gray Details. “I wish I could find a better balance,” Baker said. “I think every mother struggles with that.” She said her work doesn’t feel like work, though. “I do it because I need to feel 100 percent fulfilled in what I do.” She likes inspiring women, and blogging fulfills that. “I need it for me to feel good, to feel meaningful.” Baker worked 13 years for Calvin Klein underwear, living in New York for a decade and then working remotely after moving to 24

MAY 2022

Oklahoma and traveling back and forth occasionally. Baby number three changed that. She stayed home for a couple of years, doing everything stay-at-home moms do, and then launched the Gray Details. “At the end of the day, I needed something for me. I had such a strong work background,” she said, adding that with her experience in fashion, e-commerce and online retailers, the Gray Details seemed a natural fit. Her focus and goal is to inspire and guide women through visualization and style guides. She likes to show them how to dress for any occasion by creating a capsule wardrobe. Personally, Baker loves neutrals and is drawn to romantic f lorals, lace and feminine details, all strong looks for spring. Some of the season’s other most talked about styles, many of which will be perfect for a Mother’s Day gathering

Baker said the Gray Details offers women ideas, tips and plenty of photographs. “I would say that I’m really guiding people on ways to have more of an elegant style with edge,” she said. Baker commends mothers and all women who celebrate themselves, their success and their accomplishments. They shouldn’t apologize. “They should own it,” she said.

Fierce Fiftieth Take party inspiration from a specially designed celebration BY BRANDY WHEATLEY OF BLUE CHALK EVENTS

I N A F I E L D O F RO S E S , B E A W I L D flower! This 50th birthday was inspired by wildflowers and all things bohemian, and was designed exclusively for the guest of honor. The Yale Theater was the perfect backdrop for this milestone birthday, where Poppylane created a growing wildflower backdrop and darling bud vases lined the tables for a casual bohemian feel. Guests were greeted with a signature cocktail, the Fierce Fifty, upon arrival, and cotton candy was spun on site featuring an edible “50” wildflower sugar image. Abbey Road served a heavy hors d’oeuvres menu featuring a marinated grilled vegetable display, peppered beef tenderloin crostini, shrimp cocktail served in a mini cocktail glass and bacon-wrapped chicken and artichoke brochettes, just to name a few. While the guests mingled, they took advantage of the interactive photo booth and enjoyed dancing and live entertainment throughout the night. To end the evening, guests enjoyed a dessert bar inspired by the guest of honor’s favorite desserts and love for lemon; while the four-tier wildflower cake by Amy Cakes was not only the focal point of the dessert bar, but the hit of the night.

Traditional 2.0 Pastels and pops of whimsy take this historic home to the next level BY E V I E K LO P P H O L Z E R P H O T O S BY B R A N D O N S M I T H

T I M E L E S S D E S I G N S TA K E T I M E T O design. Just ask Jordan and Jesse Gould about the historic Mesta Park home they purchased in 2020. “Any drapery you see, we took days going through multiple fabrics,” said Jordan Gould, who worked closely with interior designers Hannah Sutter and Kellie Schwartz to select the perfect patterns and trims. All collaborated to achieve a singular vision: traditional interiors that honor the history of the home, and that were also fun and fresh. In addition to the thoughtful window treatments, the home boasts stunning artwork, contemporary fixtures, local antique finds and custom-upholstered furniture with classic lines. “I was really wanting [something] like ‘traditional 2.0’ — grounded in traditional antiques and design with contemporary touches,” Jordan Gould said. “Anything we bought new, we didn’t really want it to look new.” The home was built in 1910 by architect J.W. Hawk, known for building stately hotels and courthouses throughout Oklahoma. There is speculation on whether Hawk actually lived here — the second floor balcony stonework contains an “H.” However, while researching the home’s history, Jesse Gould found a 1910 newspaper clipping tying the property to Lee Bernstein and his Jewish family. “It’s an interesting and cool connection that it was originally built by a Jewish family in 1910, over 100 years ago,” said Jesse Gould, who is also Jewish. “It kind of goes hand-in-hand with the history, but the sidewalks, the trees and the walkability of the neighborhood are all also very appealing.” Jesse Gould, who works for the Oklahoma City Thunder, was raised in an 1850s row house in Philadelphia. Jordan Gould, a family law attorney who grew up in a newer California neighborhood, gained an appreciation for historic homes after the couple rented a property in Mesta Park. 34

entry features a Visual Comfort Talia chandelier, a custom CR Lane sofa, an antique rent table from Antique Avenue, and several vases from Mockingbird Manor.

The first item Jordan Gould purchased for the home was a round marbletop table with a carved base from K&N Interior Consignment. Sutter and Schwartz helped place the large table in the dining room and finished out the space with the right chairs, sideboard, light fixture and rug. The room blends new and old seamlessly while incorporating a rainbow of soothing pastels — a concept that also defines the entry and living room. “I wanted to go with soft colors so, when you’re here, it’s calming,” said Jordan Gould. “I didn’t want to have blue overload, because that can happen. So we tried to branch out with other colors as you move upstairs and downstairs.” Sutter says she enjoyed working with so many colors — like lavender, sky blue and chartreuse-yellow — compared to the ever-popular neutral tones people often request.

“There’s no white, beige or gray anywhere,” Sutter said. “Every piece of furniture that was upholstered is a color. Every drapery is a color or a floral or a print.” Schwartz added that Tabriz Oriental Rugs was a great resource for rugs that pulled all of the colors together. “We really lucked out there, because a lot of those area rugs brought in the different blues, purples and greens,” she said. Charming details like the pom-pom trim on the living room drapes exemplify the Goulds’ thorough and thoughtful approach to interior design. With this home, they are putting down roots in Oklahoma City while establishing long-lasting designs. Such meaningful endeavors simply take time. 405MAGAZINE.COM

W

ith more than 1,200 reviews and four metro locations, there’s a lot to love about Farrow & Dewbre Orthodontics. Drs. Melissa Farrow and Jeremy Dewbre have more than 21 years of orthodontic experience and are both VIP Diamond Plus Invisalign providers. This is the top status an orthodontist can earn. “Invisalign can be used for any and all patients in our practice,” Farrow said. “We often recommend Invisalign because it is a superior appliance for particular dental concerns. Treatment plans are customized to the individual, their dental needs and their personal smile goals.” Some choose aligners, while others choose braces. Patients as young as 7 can benefit from interventional orthodontics during the critical years of development. This can mean avoiding more aggressive treatments in the future. For adults, Farrow and Dewbre are able to give many the smile they have dreamt of for years. The smile journey is often surprisingly easy. “The time and resources invested in orthodontics last a lifetime if properly cared for,” Dewbre said. There are very few investments you can say this about. Farrow and Dewbre are proud of the patient experience offered at their practice and encourage 405 residents to experience it for themselves. “It is very common for us to hear feedback from our patients about how positive the experience has been from their first phone call,” Farrow said. “We genuinely care about them and the result they achieve. ”

MAY 2022

SELECTION PROCESS “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you

refer them to?” This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies and of course physical results. The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association, as well as dentists listed online with other dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer’s work when evaluating the other nominees. Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received, status in various dental academies can play a factor in our decision. Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists. Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in Oklahoma. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

AT JOSHUA G. BROCK, DDS Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, Dr. Brock and his team believe all that is good begins with a smile. That’s why oral health is the top priority at the clinic. “The function of your teeth and the appearance of your smile has a huge impact on your life,” Dr. Brock said. His patients experience all that modern dentistry has to offer, including a comprehensive list of general, restorative and cosmetic dental services to meet the needs of the whole family. Dr. Brock and his team help each patient achieve and maintain long-term dental health and a beautiful smile. Dr. Brock practices comprehensive and restorative dentistry, but he is especially experienced in the field of cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry. As the field of dentistry advances and improves, Dr. Brock works closely with ceramists and digital designers for his aesthetic dentistry patients. Patients can feel confident that he devotes the same amount of time, effort, detail and care into his day-to-day dental procedures as well. One of his favorite aspects of his work is helping anxious patients overcome their fear of the dentist. “In my practice, I get to spend ample time with all my patients getting to know them and building a real relationship with them,” he said. “The time we take to have real and open communication allows our patients to let go and fully trust us. While we offer amentities like blankets and pillows to relax our patients for every appointment, nothing can replace trust and compassion.” JOSHUA G. BROCK, DDS

Dr. Victoria Ball

IF A ROOT CANAL SOUNDS LIKE YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE, you don’t know Dr. Victoria Ball. At Contemporary Endodontics of Oklahoma, Dr. Ball specializes in caring for the inside of the tooth when it becomes inflamed or infected. She diagnoses and treats complex causes of tooth pain, such as tooth abscesses caused by infection. In many respects, she said, the fear of extremely painful root canals is outdated. “My field of dentistry involves treating the nerve of the tooth,” she said. “An endodontist is a highly specialized dental professional focusing on treating tooth pain.” Dr. Ball said if patients are experiencing pain when eating or drinking, they should act sooner rather than later. Waiting too long could result in greater pain, infection or even loss of the tooth. “If you’re eating ice cream, for example, and it’s painful when before it wasn’t, it’s a good idea to be examined to help avoid bigger problems in the future,” she said. Patients appreciate the attention they receive from Dr. Ball and her staff, especially since anxiety can be high when it comes to dental procedures. “I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Ball and her staff for my root canal,” said one patient. “They have a way of ensuring that you are comfortable, that everything is explained to you – and are very empathetic, which shows that they truly do care about you as a person, not just another patient. I highly recommend their practice.” Dr. Ball said root canals have evolved over the years and are much less painful than they once were. “There are modern techniques that have made it an easier procedure for patients, that have allowed people to be more comfortable,” Dr. Ball said. “The whole point of what we do is to relieve the patient from pain and help them save their natural teeth.” CONTEMPORARY ENDODONTICS OF OKLAHOMA

Geoff Potts, DDS Cosmetic and General Dentist

AS A NATIVE OKL AHOMAN who’s no stranger to defining his own path, Geoff Potts is the epitome of spirit and determination. Whether as President of the University of Oklahoma’s RUF/NEKS organization or as the face of cosmetic dentistry in Norman for the past 23 years, he’s committed to the art of excellence and personal attention. Geoff Potts, DDS takes pride in his staff of only four members, including himself. The team has worked together for more than 15 years, resulting in relationships that Potts’ patients are quick to recognize. It’s not a traditional dental experience; this tight-knit group provides a sense of caring and trust in a setting that might otherwise elicit patient anxiety. Rather than a crowded waiting room with clinical decor, the setting of Potts’ dental office provides an atmosphere of intentional care and interest in his patients. With the highest level of technology and equipment, Potts offers a vast array of services, from cosmetic to general and restorative dentistry. Potts stated that his favorite aspect GEOFF POTTS, DDS

of business is “the opportunity to develop relationships with my patients that last for generations. It is very rewarding to see patients as children, who now bring their children to our office!” According to his family, Geoff Potts is the “world’s greatest” father to his beautiful, brilliant daughters, Annabella and Sophia, and “the perfect” husband to his wife of 24 years, Donna Potts – the pair began dating in high school! In addition to being the Face of Cosmetic Dentistry for 405 Magazine in the past, Potts is most fond of the multitude of honors awarded to him by his children, including the “Big Muscle” Award (circa 2006), “King Pong” (Ping Pong Champion), and his most cherished award, the “#1 Dad” Trophy, which was repurposed from the “King Pong” Trophy. While his family could continue listing his accolades, Geoff Potts is best described by what his patients admire most about his business: “The relationship between Dr. Potts and his staff, the genuine care/concern that he has for his patients’ needs/desires, and the artistry that delivers their beautiful ‘after’ smiles!”

At Craig and Streight Orthodontics, it doesn’t have to be. “More than anything else, we understand that your oral health is important to you,” Kierl said. “It’s about being able to walk out the door every day knowing that you love the way you look.” Dr. Streight, Dr. Craig and Dr. Kierl are board certified orthodontists who appreciate and understand the complexities that go into orthodontic treatment. They have served the OKC metro area for decades.

Flashback Flavors R & J Lounge’s expertly crafted throwback vibe BY G R E G H O R T O N P H O T O S BY L E X I H O E B I N G

R & J L OU NG E A N D S U PPE R Club began — conceptually, at least — on the back of a bag of R.F. Kluski noodles sometime in the 1960s. Russ Johnson’s mother found a recipe for stroganoff on the back of the bag, or it was passed to her at some point, and then she started making it for her family. “I grew up in Crown Heights, and we used to go sledding at Douglas Park when I was a kid,” Johnson said. “My mom would load our thermoses with that stroganoff. It’s one of my favorite childhood memories.” The rustic dish would serve as a target of sorts for what would become R & J’s menu. When it launched in 2014, Johnson started with what he calls classic ’70s cocktail party fare, including the now-famous cocktail wieners that are part of the concept’s branding, as well as a relish tray and the current best-selling menu item, cheesy crab toast. “I remember these foods from my parents’ cocktail parties, and it was this trendy midcentury modern food at the time, but by 2014, it was passe,” Johnson said. “I knew that people would either say, ‘What the hell is this?’ and make fun of it, or they’d get the nostalgic part. Fortunately, it was the latter.” R & J launched during H & 8th, the old night market and food truck 76

event that at its peak brought thousands of people to Midtown. Ludivine was still in its former building, and R & J occupied the back fourth of what was the Archer Printing building. Businessman, developer and racecar driver/collector Chip Fudge had purchased the building, and he approached Johnson, wanting to do something interesting with the midcentury modern facility. “I loved the whole vibe of the cinderblock cube that backed up to an alley,” Johnson said. “It had an edgy, urban feel, and it reminded me of a few of my favorite places. The sliding glass door was an overhead door then, and there was no patio. We did open with a patio,

but it was a couple years before we added the corrugated tin roof that it has now.” The addition of the “den,” a mezzanine-level space opposite the kitchen in back that had been used as an office by Cooper House (which did the branding and logo design for R & J), made it possible to experience R & J in four completely different ways: bartop, main dining, den and patio. Johnson said that in the Venn diagram of what could be that occupied his imagination at the time, R & J was going to be a mashup of

Kitchen manager Chef Ben Grossman.

Because it managed to stay just on the whimsical nostalgia side of the line, it has become our city’s best day-drinking bar.

Junior’s, HiLo and the Wilshire Club — which is to say, a combination of dive bar and supper club that walked a narrow aesthetic line between too kitschy and whimsical nostalgia. Because it managed to stay just on the whimsical nostalgia side of the line, it has become our city’s best day-drinking bar (which is a compliment). That means offering guests a chance to drink in the equivalent darkness of evening on the brightest of summer days. Sure, the patio is open, and that vibe is available, but for those to whom William S. Burroughs is a spirit animal of sorts, the bartop is where the best experience occurs. Opening the front door (west side of the building) often lets in late afternoon sunlight, and the response from drinkers looks like that moment in a horror film when someone discovers the vampire lair.

The food is clever, creative and well executed, like this house-cured bacon with truffle and Bleu cheese.

Patio or bartop, though, the drinks are the same: high in quality, crafted well and served by one of the city’s most knowledgeable staffs. It has in bar manager Mitch Czarneski a top-10 bartender both in terms of skill and understanding of cocktails and their history. General manager Brad Ackerman is equally skilled in the front and back of house, and he has the perfect even-tempered demeanor for a bar that can often turn raucous in a matter of minutes. “We’re not everyone’s vibe,” Ackerman said. “We don’t carry the big American macrobrews like Bud Light, and we’re not interested in attracting everyone. The new bars in the area — plus COVID — brought a shift in our clientele briefly in 2020, but we’re back to our core now, because we don’t try to appeal to everyone.” 405MAGAZINE.COM

While the cocktail list has more than 100 choices, there’s a solid top 20 in terms of sales, and the bartenders are absolute masters of the Old Fashioned. A craft menu that changes seasonally allows for individual input, but classics are still the bulk of what R & J slings. The most recent change is the acquisition of kitchen manager Ben Grossman, a talented young chef who came to OKC via Portland and Louisville. Grossman started cooking with his grandmother when he was four and cooked for an after-school program fresh out of his undergrad. His intention was a Ph.D. in biology — “I wanted to discover a new species and then maybe teach high school” — but he liked cooking better, so he headed for culinary school. “I love the food here,” Grossman said. “During my interview, we had the relish tray, crab toast and pork and beans. I connected with the food right away.” The menu hasn’t changed much. The pork and beans made with boar shank is a stunner, and chicken-fried steak outsells everything but the cheesy crab toast. The wieners hit nearly every table, and the umami burger is easily one of the best burger choices in the metro. Ackerman did want to add one thing. “Can you tell people we don’t share a kitchen with Ludivine?” He asked. “We get that all the time, but we were here for five years before Ludivine relocated. We’ve always been a restaurant.”

Central American Savor Enjoying OKC’s Guatemalan cuisine BY G R E G H O R T O N P H O T O BY L E X I H O E B I N G

I N ON E V E RY I M P ORTA N T sense, Oklahomans have been eating “Guatemalan food” for more than 20 years, even if it’s not in the sense of traditional Guatemalan cuisine. Rather, immigrants from Guatemala — many first- and second-generation refugees from their country’s 36-year civil war (1960-1996) — fill local restaurant kitchens in numbers disproportionate to their total numbers in the state: roughly 25,000, per The Oklahoman. If you eat out at all, there is a better than good chance that some portion of your meal was prepared by a Guatemalan cook. In one very popular family restaurant, 9 of 22 staff members are Guatemalan; in another, it’s 5 of 12; in yet another, 11 of 30. They form a near-invisible backbone to the hospitality industry, filling positions from dishwasher to prep cook to server assistant to chef, in numbers that make them indispensable to the restaurant and hotel industries. But most of that time in kitchens is spent making food other than their own: Italian, American, Chinese, burgers and bar food. Guatemalan-made food is everywhere, but traditional Guatemalan food is harder to come by. Popular spots like Cafe Antigua and Cafe Kacao 80

MAY 2022

have upped the visibility of the Central American country’s traditional cuisine, even as the latter has moved toward a much more modern spin on Guatemalan classics. Closer to what you’ll find in Guatemala, according to Chef Juan Quixtan — a native of Quetzaltenango in the country’s southwest corner near the Pacific Ocean — is the food served at Tienda Guatemala and El Rinconcito. “They are like comedore in my country,” Quixtan said. “But the grocery part is very different.” Both are concepts owned by the Cifuentes family, and Tienda Guatemala began as Chiltepe’s in Plaza District before moving to its current spot at NW 9th and Indiana. The primary difference between the two stores and a traditional comedor is the grocery store half of the business. Restaurants are more touristy than part of day-to-day life in Guatemala; they are often foreign-owned and exist as part of the travel economy. The local comedore are unfussy affairs with either a “blue plate”-style single choice or a short hot line with multiple selections. The closest in Oklahoma City is the line at Tienda Guatemala. Hang a hard left inside the store, and you’ll see the kitchen, usually with a cluster of women slapping out tortillas and pupusas from a mound of masa in the middle of a prep table. At the east end of the kitchen is the hot line, and daily features are pepian de pollo, estofado, costillas de puerco and a shredded beef dish much like deshebrada or machaca, all served with rice, black beans and a surprisingly familiar macaroni salad that looks ripped from a local church potluck. “Guatemalan food is regional, too,” Quixtan said. He is Quiché, one of the country’s more than 20 indigenous tribes. Like many Guatemalans, he speaks his tribal language (also Quiché), Spanish and English. “The food is different from east to west. The closer to the Yucatan Peninsula or Oaxaca, the more variations you see. You can see the difference with a dish like motuleños. The dish is from the Yucatan, and pupusas are from El Salvador.” Both motuleños and pupusas are popular choices in Guatemalan restaurants — Antigua has a delicious version of the former — but they are definitely dishes that have crossed borders, and

Tortillas and pupusas are handmade daily, and the aguas frescas counter offers dozens of fruit varieties.

Pepian de pollo, estofado and costillas de puerco are daily features at Tienda Guatemala.

Popular spots like Cafe Antigua and Cafe Kacao have upped the visibility of the Central American country’s traditional cuisine, even as the latter has moved toward a much more modern spin on Guatemalan classics.

that’s perfectly normal. The cultural exchanges happen everywhere: China with Vietnam, Laos with Thailand, France with Germany, the U.S. with Mexico. Borders are constructs; they don’t stop people who live a mile from each other eating the same food. “Pepian is similar to the moles of Oaxaca,” Quixtan said. “And there is a dish called kak’ik that we don’t have in Oklahoma that comes from the area near Yucatan. It’s made with turkey, since that’s the main protein of the Yucatan peninsula.” Pepian is similar to a sauce or gravy, and Tienda Guatemala serves a stunning version. Rich umami notes surround zippy pepper, including black pepper, in the sauce, and it’s ladled generously over perfectly cooked chicken. You’re left wishing there was enough sauce to saturate the rice, too. At El Rinconcito, the hot line is in the kitchen. The caldo de res is popular (and delicious), a savory beef soup with chunky vegetables. Castillas de puerco are pork ribs cooked tender with a tangy red sauce — not traditional barbecue, but still some of the city’s best ribs. As for Guatemalan breakfast, it’s Desayuno Chapin, which Quixtan highly recommends at Cafe Antigua. It’s a basic farmer’s breakfast Central American style: scrambled eggs, refried black beans, tortillas, fried plantains and cheese. Quixtan said meat is occasionally served with chapin, and Antigua does offer the option to add longaniza, carne asada, chicken or chorizo. Ask for chirmol, the charred tomato salsa common to Guatemalan tables, and if you get pupusas — delicious corn cakes — be sure to ask for extra curtido (slaw) and salsa roja. 405MAGAZINE.COM

Dessert for Breakfast 10 metro pastries you need to try now BY G R E G H O R T O N

PA ST R I E S E X IST I N A W E I R D C AT E G ORY W E SHOU L D just call “breakfast dessert.” Honestly, they often double as breakfast, but we’re not pretending they provide the nutrition your body needs to handle the first half of the day. They are delicious, though — and psychologically, at least, they can make the day seem better from the start. Here are 10 pastries you need to try now.

Harvey Bakery & Kitchen, 301 NW 13th St., OKC The Midnight Cowboy croissant might be the best thing in a pastry case loaded with great things. OKC’s newest full-service bakery just off Midtown features this croissant with dark chocolate every day, and a few seconds in the microwave makes it even more magical. Quincy Bake Shop, 1235 NW 38th St., OKC Trisha O’Donoghue is good at too many things to list — we just featured her babka in the April issue — but her cardamom bun was the first thing to make us realize that Quincy is something special. Called “kardemummabulle” 82

MAY 2022

in their native Sweden, these fragrant, filling pastries combine the best of European baking with one of south India’s famous spices. Ganache Patisserie, 13230 Pawnee Dr., OKC It’s hard not to get chocolate when you’re in this Chisholm Creek destination, but start the day with a flaky, buttery croissant, and then have chocolate. It’s delicious on its own, but it makes a brilliant vehicle for a breakfast sandwich, too.

La Baguette Bistro, 7408 N. May Ave., OKC A tart is made with pastry, so it counts, even as it’s technically a dessert for any meal. Pear is also the most underrated fruit, especially in pies and tarts, so grab the pear and almond tarte to see how wonderful this combination is. Whipped Bakery Café, 3820 N. MacArthur Blvd., Warr Acres You’ll want to show up for the runzas eventually (immediately), but on the sweet side, the cream cheese danish is a delicious example of the classic pastry, often underappreciated because of its commercial availability in the form of overly sweet, dry bread. This version may be a revelation. Shell Belle’s Bakery, 331 White St., Norman This Norman shop features a pretty extensive menu, including a variety of sweet and savory croissants. While the mixed berry is an easy yes, if you’re looking for even more indulgence, the Nutella croissant should do the trick. Sunshine Baking Company, 7705 S. Walker Ave., OKC It includes the cinnamon roll on its pastry menu, and since we’re not food fundamentalists, we’ll simply nod our heads

in agreement and approval. The key to a cinnamon roll is keeping the dough moist and not being too heavy-handed with icing/ glaze and cinnamon; Sunshine nails it. Cafe Evoke, 103 S. Broadway Ave., Edmond We recently featured this downtown Edmond spot because it does everything well, from coffee to London Fog to Chef Chris McCabe’s delicious food. One of his creations is the cruffin: the offspring of a croissant and muffin. The flavors will rotate, but this is a must-try, and we’d love to see even more delicious mash-ups like this. Elemental Coffee, 815 N. Hudson Ave., OKC You never know what Elena Hughes will have in the pastry case — besides cookies! — at this Midtown hub, but we’ve learned it will be delicious. Pick the right day, and you might get a ham and gruyere puff pastry or hand pie, or even a lemonblueberry hand pie. Stitch Cafe, 835 W. Sheridan Ave., OKC Call ’em tarts, hand pies or pop-tarts for grownups, these pastries over-deliver on yummy. The strawberry and prickly pear is delightful on the sweet side, and the nopales with jalapeno is perfect for a savory punch.

STRAIGHT FROM THE CHEF FRIDA’s Quinn Carroll on the challenges and rewards of innovative cuisine This spring, Cadillac sent 405 senior writer Greg Horton and blogger/influencer Sarah James on a culinary adventure around Oklahoma City to talk to chefs about their food, inspiration and hospitality. FRIDA Southwest executive chef Quinn Carroll be-

Chef Quinn Carroll

gan his culinary career at 16, and he’s never looked back — he’s worked at some of the finest restaurants in Oklahoma City in his career so far. Carroll tackles new concepts by immersing himself in the style of the restaurant, an approach that’s given him a broad and deep understanding of flavors, seasonings, complexity and techniques. At FRIDA, he oversees a kitchen that specializes in Southwest and Mexican flavors, combined with one of Oklahoma’s best bars and most innovative dessert menus.

405: Describe your understanding of the style of food you serve at Frida and what you believe it adds to Oklahoma City’s culinary landscape. C A R R O L L : FRIDA is obviously a Southwest-style restaurant, but I like to describe it as the food I would want to eat when dining out. I approach it as a blend of multiple cuisines — it borrows from Texas Hill Country cuisine, with a New Mexican flair, inspired heavily by Southern and Mexican dishes. I don’t think there is another restaurant like it in OKC. 405: What are the challenges of serving new, unfamiliar dishes and flavors to OKC? C A R R O L L : There’s the obvious challenge of questioning whether the dish is going to work and whether the guest is going to like it. I honestly enjoy the challenge of trying new things and predicting whether it will be received well by our guests.

405: How do you conceptualize your plating: imagination, sketches, mood boards, inspiration from other chefs? C A R R O L L : My process is honestly to just think about the components of the dish, grab a plate and let the creative process happen. I do like to follow all kinds of chefs and restaurants to be aware of trends and what others are doing and enjoying. I don’t really practice plating; I just let my ideas flow. 405: What do you find rewarding and frustrating about cheffing? C A R R O L L : What can be frustrating is when dishes are modified so much that they aren’t as intended. This doesn’t include modifications for allergens or other food restrictions; in fact, that’s one of the most rewarding parts of being a chef for me. I strive to perfect recipes for all types of dietary restrictions and preferences. It’s great when a guest gets to experience something they’re usually restricted from.

He founded his practice, Oklahoma Hand, during his time as an orthopedic resident at the University of Oklahoma. It developed out of a desire to provide patients with accurate and reliable information regarding their hand and upper extremity conditions. “We work as a team to bring the newest and most innovative techniques in Hand and Upper Extremity surgery to Oklahoma to provide the best patient outcomes possible,” Nelson said. Nelson completed his undergraduate degree at Oklahoma State University and attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma, where he also had his orthopedic residency. He completed a fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity at the Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center and had advanced training in microsurgical techniques and wrist arthroscopy under world-renowned plastic surgeons in Madrid, Spain. He enjoys working with his patients to understand their needs and expectations in order to offer multiple options to help restore form and function to their upper extremity, so they can return to the activities they enjoy. “We provide in-office procedures that limit the need for anesthesia, including carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release and more,” he said. “There are many advantages to having procedures done within the office using local anesthetic techniques compared to a traditional operating room setting.”

A fresh take on a classic to close the troupe’s season BY L AV I N I A C R E S WA

M A N Y OF US GR E W U P WAT C H I NG the Disney film of Princess Aurora being cared for by her quirky, colorful godmothers and put under a spell by the evil Maleficent, such that only her true love’s kiss could wake her from a deep slumber. This Mother’s Day weekend, Oklahoma City Ballet will present a more graceful version of that classic tale: Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty, with choreography by acting artistic director Ryan Jolicoeur-Nye, after the original choreography by Marius Petipa. Jolicoeur-Nye said, “With my interpretation of The Sleeping Beauty, I will honor the original choreographer while also inserting my own artistic nuances to create a retelling that is unique to Oklahoma City Ballet. The story of The Sleeping Beauty remains largely the same in comparison to the well-known classic. In order 92

to tell the story through dance, we will need to use pantomime, and replace vocal dialogue with physical conversation through movement.” The ballet is based on a 17th-century story by Charles Perrault, “La Belle au Bois Dormant.” The villain was named Carabosse, which is the same in the ballet and was later changed to Maleficent for the Disney film. The role of Princess Aurora is notorious for being one of the most challenging for a ballerina. Jolicoeur-Nye said, “Not only is it a three-, sometimes four-act ballet, which is difficult for any ballerina, Aurora represents classical technique in its purest form. It is both technically challenging and requires an artistic maturity only found in a seasoned principal dancer.” The role of Princess Aurora will be shared by principal artists Courtney Connor Jones and

DaYoung Jung. Jung admitted, “Out of all the story ballets I’ve done, I would definitely say this one is the most challenging technically, physically and artistically. The goal is to make the steps look as simple as possible, but you have to execute the steps with lightness and precision — which is really very difficult.” Connor Jones said, “The Sleeping Beauty is such a special classical ballet. While Aurora’s dancing and character should have a sense of ‘coming of age’ excitement, the Lilac Fairy is more of the gentle guardian mother figure, who is also strong enough to fight off Carabosse. I am really looking forward to premiering these roles!” With live accompaniment from the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and an impressive cast of 45 professional level dancers and approximately 25 Yvonne Chouteau School students, The Sleeping Beauty is the perfect choice to close the Oklahoma City Ballet’s 50th season — a classic tale of good versus evil that can be enjoyed by the whole family. “As a ballet that has stood the test of time, The Sleeping Beauty is a classic family fairy tale that will captivate the most seasoned dance enthusiast and new audiences alike,” said Jolicoeur-Nye. The Sleeping Beauty will be performed at the Civic Center Music Hall May 6-8; tickets are on sale now. For more information, visit okcballet.org.

Jocelyn Alo, the Queen of Crash OU women’s softball star breaks the home run record BY DAV I D S K I D M O R E P H O T O BY S H E VA U N W I L L I A M S

W H E N PE OPL E H E A R T H E WOR D “crash” in relation to Hawaii, they might think of a wave that crashed upon the shore. It was one of Hawaii’s own, Jocelyn Aloha Pumehana Alo, who crashed the all-time collegiate home run record with her 96th career home run as her Sooners played at the University of Hawaii in the Rainbow Wahine Classic. You can almost hear Squints and Benny the Jet describing her to Smalls in The Sandlot. Alo is collegiate softball’s Babe Ruth, the Queen of Crash, the Colossus of Clout. Whose record did she crash? Her predecessor at the University of Oklahoma, Lauren Chamberlain. Recently, Chamberlain posted a picture on Twitter placing a crown on Jocelyn Alo’s head. The tweet reads, “What’s understood doesn’t need to be explained… it’s your time now. Happy and proud. Love you and got you for life #96” Alo’s record-breaking hit came against Hawaii’s Ashley Murphy, whose curveball hung out over the plate. When the Queen of Crash is at the plate, a pitcher can never let the ball do that. Moments later, the ball was exiting the park over the right-center field fence. Soon after, Alo’s father Levi set a lei around her neck, and crowned her with flowers. Alo described the moment by calling it a “Huge relief. Now I feel everyone can relax and we can elevate our game even more.” Reflecting on the moment when Alo broke her own record, Chamberlain said, “Records are 94

The day she crossed home plate as she became the greatest home run hitter in NCAA history wasn’t like every other home run she had hit. This time, Jocelyn Alo’s family cheered as she crossed home plate — only 100 yards from the house she grew up in. The new Queen of Crash had come home to claim her crown.

Olé, Santa Fe Creativity reigns in the Land of Enchantment BY G R E G H O R T O N

PE R H A P S I T ’ S T H E T H I N N E R A I R 7,200 feet up, or some more mystical cause, but people slow down when they get to Santa Fe. The slower, gentler vibe is remarkable in a city that annually attracts more than two million visitors. That level of popularity combined with outstanding food, a vibrant arts community and plenty of outdoor activities normally translates to a bustling, near-frenzied pace in other touristy places, but Santa Fe manages to remain a calm, even sedate, environment. New Mexican cuisine is having a moment, thanks in large part to the popularity of Hatch chiles, or at least the regional variations in the ubiquitous green chile. The emergence of Santa Fe, and even Albuquerque, as food cities was surprising to many, and part of the credit likely needs to go to the popularity of Tex-Mex, a cuisine that is similar in some ways to the blending of indigenous Pueblo dishes and Mexican fare that now constitutes New Mexican cuisine. Where to Stay

Airbnbs have emerged as the lodging of choice, but Santa Fe has beautiful, amenity-rich hotels as well. La Fonda on the Plaza is located just off the city’s famous Plaza, putting you mere feet from many of the destinations the city is known for, including Loretto Chapel with its “miraculous staircase,” a feature that is often attributed to St. Joseph’s work. The hotel features spacious, comfortable rooms, a patio that overlooks the Plaza, and dining and drinking on site. Where to Eat

Palacio Cafe is a must, especially for breakfast. Chef Damian Munoz’s breakfast burritos are already famous, and it’s easy to understand why. You can get them handheld, but have a seat and get it smothered with red and green sauce, “Christmas style.” Maria’s New Mexican Kitchen is an institution in Santa Fe, both because it’s been around for more 96

than 70 years and because the food is outstanding. The menu overflows with New Mexican specialties, but start with the green chile meatballs. From there it’s posole or green chile stew, and if you’re really hungry, tamales with green or red sauce. The list of tequilas and mezcals is impressive, and if you’re a day drinker, you’re in the right place. For dinner, Sazon is a wonder. Chef Fernando Olea’s menu will make you wish you had room for three dinners. The huitlacoche with mini tortillas (Xochimilco) is the place to start, and you can’t leave without trying the specialty of the house, chile en nogada (Cholula) — poblanos, picadillo (lamb, pork, beef), nuts, fruit and walnut sauce. Whatever you thought New Mexican food was, Chef Olea will broaden your definition. He also has a tasting menu option if you want to leave it up to the house. Where to Play

There’s a good chance you’re here for the art, so Canyon Road has to be high on your list. The city’s

official arts district boasts more than 80 galleries, with artists and proprietors often available to talk about their work or the gallery. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is a worthwhile stop, too. A combination of history, biography and art, the museum and grounds are a deep dive into O’Keeffe’s life and work, and a stunning cross-section of American Modernism. Meow Wolf is now the most Instagrammed destination in the Santa Fe area. The immersive art installation facility has inspired multiple similar projects around the U.S., including our very own Factory Obscura. The multimedia installations are clever, psychedelic, inspiring and, judging by visitors’ testimony, drivers of our imagination. Prefer to play outside? The trail to and from Tesuque Peak is 11.5 miles of moderate hiking with scenic views and activities along the route. It’s also dog-friendly, so your best friend can join you on the trek. Rafting the Rio Grande, hiking Dale Ball Trails North and a bike tour of Santa Fe also make for excellent outdoor days.

Chef Mary Payne Moran

Home magazine, and she teaches food styling and cooking courses to classrooms near and far (thanks to Zoom). We caught up with Moran while she was home — leading a “Food Styling for Film” course at Francis Tuttle — to learn more about her unique and star-studded career. How were you introduced to food styling for film?

While I was enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu, my husband was assistant director on “Gilmore Girls.” After school, I would drive my pastries, croissants and chocolates — because I made a boatload of them — from culinary school to set, and the crew and the cast were just waiting for me. One of the crew on set regularly was the food stylist. She was incredible and so knowledgeable, and we had a great relationship. She invited me to come work with her, so my first food styling job after culinary school was being her assistant on “Gilmore Girls.”

While she attended Westminster School, her mom tended to a business creating and selling gingerbread houses with a friend. After school Moran joyfully joined in, fashioning various candy decorations for the elaborate wintry scenes. Moran says that “magical time” with her mom 98

was also a time of discovery: Food is fun — and playing with it can also be profitable. Fast forward a few decades, and the Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef has become a food stylist to the stars. Working in Los Angeles, Moran has styled restaurant and kitchen scenes for “The Gilmore Girls,” Death at a Funeral, Valentine’s Day, “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Nailed It” and “Sugar Rush” — among other movies and television shows. In addition, she is the resident chef for Traditional

Is there a need for food styling in Oklahoma City?

Prairie Surf Media is bringing in television shows and movies, so now there’s an actual job that’s coming into the OKC area. When these production companies come into town, they may say, “We need X, Y, Z and a food stylist.” So, there’s a job opening any time a new production comes in with a food scene. Are there any similarities in styling food for film and editorial?

They both involve timing. You’re meeting a deadline with a photographer or camera person. So you have

Where the Good Life Lives

When it comes to styling a perfect plate for photos, it’s all about the fine details and tools.

to always be on your feet, thinking, “What’s my next shot? What do I need to prep? What do I need to produce?” And you have to be aware that time, light and heat are all against you. The longer food sits out under lights and heat, the more it will start to wilt and die, similar to flowers. What is the biggest difference?

With editorial, it’s really finite. You’re using your tweezers, Q-Tips, chopsticks and syringes. You’re thinking about what exactly the plate looks like. It doesn’t matter what anything else looks like; you just want to look at the food, and how it’s looking on camera. So you’re constantly working with a photographer, looking through the lens, [in a] back-and-forth action to create something that’s perfect for your shoot. In addition to crafting recipes, cooking and food styling, you paint pictures of food. Is there a food-art connection for you?

I really think food is beautiful. I think it is so incredible what nature is able to create. And I see food very differently than a majority of the population. I would say most people look at food and think about it as a way to eat. To me, it’s something just spectacular … And the truth is, food is fun.

‘Hostess With the Mostest’ OKC native Perle Mesta charmed D.C. elite with her earthiness and style BY M E L I S S A M E R C E R H O W E L L

O K L A H OM A C I T Y N AT I V E PE R L E Mesta, who inspired the phrase “hostess with the mostest,” reigned over Washington, D.C.’s social elite for more than three decades. Born in 1889 to real estate and oil and gas tycoon William Skirvin and Harriet Elizabeth Reid Skirvin, Mesta honed her entertaining skills at her father’s Skirvin Hotel, where her family lived after the death of her mother. 100

MAY 2022

A 1974 photo of Perle Skirvin Mesta with Mamie Eisenhower.

“In 1909, Hetty Green, the financial genius sent her son to Oklahoma City to buy some property. She tried to purchase four lots my father owned at First and Broadway. But when father discovered that Hetty Green wanted to build a hotel on the site, he turned down the offer and built the hotel himself,” Mesta wrote in a 1960 autobiographical piece published in the Saturday Evening Post. “The Skirvin Hotel became Father’s favorite hobby. All the prominent Oklahomans would come in … to talk politics or oil and sometimes there was hardly room for the hotel guests.” In 1917, she married George Mesta, a wealthy steel manufacturer from Pittsburgh. When her husband died suddenly of heart failure after only eight years of marriage, she inherited his fortune, reportedly worth $15 million in 1925. Heartbroken, she threw herself into entertaining to fill the void. By 1940, her interests had drifted into politics — especially women’s rights — and she established a permanent residence in Washington, D.C. She cemented her status in the late 1940s when she conducted several successful fundraisers for Harry S. Truman and became a close friend of the family.

In 1949, President Truman appointed her to become the first U.S. minister to Luxembourg, where she had a steady stream of visitors, from business magnates to entertainers to political figures including Gen. Dwight Eisenhower. After a year at the Luxembourg post, she received word that composer Irving Berlin had written a musical based on her life called Call Me Madam. On a trip back to Washington, D.C. she invited Bess and Margaret Truman to New York to take in the musical — despite several unflattering references to Mesta and the Trumans. “It was a wonderful show, and while there were some pretty sharp jibes, we all enjoyed it,” she wrote. “I winced … a few times. But I really couldn’t take offense, because in too many cases the shoe fitted.” She served in Luxembourg until 1953. Mesta never remarried nor had children. She eventually returned to Oklahoma City, which she always considered “home,” and died here in 1975. The Mesta Park neighborhood is named in tribute to its grand former resident.

New House FM studio

Power House From humble beginnings, The House FM expands to Edmond W R I T T E N A N D P H O T O S BY J A K E D U R H A M

T H IS STORY BEGA N I N PONCA CI T Y, where it would have been hard to imagine that an idea would eventually turn a small radio station into a powerhouse — a big fish in a bigger pond of musical giants. The House FM traces its roots back to The Love Station, where the concept of spreading faith through music began for founder Doyle Brewer. Eventually, The Love Station was renamed My Praise FM, and then The House of Praise. In 2004, a sister station was created with family in mind — The House FM. From Ardmore to Wichita, The House FM broadcasts on over 15 frequencies, allowing its programming to reach a wider audience than many competitors. What was once a tiny station has grown into an entertainment giant that hosts over 60,000 listeners every day, and streaming services help reach a global listener base that spans eight countries. 102

MAY 2022

What sets The House apart from many other stations in the metro is that it is listener-funded. Unlike traditional radio stations, which garner funds from paid advertisements or special events, listener-supported stations rely on donations for the bulk of their funding. Annual operating revenues can exceed $1.5 million and are increasing. “Being listener-supported for funding, we see the partnership with Oklahomans from the beginning and the positive impact we have had with the message of the hope of Christ across the state for 30 years,” said CEO and music director Tony Weir. On March 26, The House FM expanded its reach by opening its new studio in Edmond. “The goal for having a studio in the OKC metro is to increase our involvement in the community,” said Weir. “The new studio will be the home of The House FM morning show, live each weekday.” Coinciding with the grand opening, The House FM hosted and Paycom Center promoted Winter Jam 2022. This year’s all-star lineup

included Skillet, Newsong, Kevin Quinn and “American Idol” contestant Colton Dixon. Winter Jam has grown into a large annual event over the last 20 years, and this year, bands played across 22 states from January through March. Shows are family-oriented, with 3.5 hours of entertainment. “Our investment into the OKC metro is part of our goal to really make an impact in one of the most thriving cities in the country,” said Weir. “Having more staff centralized in the state allows us to be closer to our other markets like Lawton, Elk City and Altus. Being in the metro will also put us on a more convenient route for artists on promotional tours, possibly adding an appearance or engagement on their stopthrough to be on the air at one of the studios.” The House FM serves the OKC metro on numerous frequencies:100.1 FM in Edmond and the north and central metro; 88.5 FM in the west metro and 94.3 FM in Moore and Norman.
