We the people In the upcoming issues Whats Happening magazine will be recognizing and acknowledging some of the heroes in our communities, in this issue we are featuring: Lakefield Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) BY: RUSS SANDERS
L
akefield Animal Welfare Society is a non-profit organization established in 1992 by a group of five women with the goal of rescuing stray, injured and abused animals. Registered as a charity in 1993 and incorporated in 1997, the Society has grown to become a well respected agency with over 200 members from all over the region. Mary Werner, receptionist and Board member is one of the many long serving volunteers who give of their time and efforts devoted to lost, injured and

abandoned cats and dogs. “We are a no-kill shelter and work very hard at finding homes for even the most difficult to place animals.” LAWS is supported strictly on donations, memberships, adoption fees and revenue derived from their on premises Thrift Shop which is open from Tuesday to Saturday 10 - 4. “We do not receive any outside government or private sector funding,” Mary explained, “our yearly expenses for the upkeep of the buildings, medical

care for animals and of course daily feeding for the animals in our care is extremely extensive so we do welcome with sincere appreciation any donations whether financial or food-wise and interested volunteers.” For further information in regard to volunteering or donations please call 705652-0588.

Love & Marriage During the Tudor years (1485- 1603) when the bride and groom left in their carriage, guests threw their shoes at them because it was considered good luck if the shoes hit the carriage.

A
s years passed no doubt after a few brides and grooms were konked with shoes, it made more sense to tie the shoes to the back of the get-away carriage. Evolving through centuries traditions either faded or were modernized, wedding guests got fed up with walking home bare footed
so they opted to tie tin cans to the back of the wedding vehicle. When our son and daughter-in-law were married, she wanted a white horse and white carriage, we granted her wish as a wedding present, thankfully, nobody threw shoes. Again through tradition, many fathers picked out the groom for their daughters who possibly could not attract a suiter but when the wedding day arrived and some grooms saw their intended for the first time, they simply ran away and that is when the tradition of veils was invented. Also seeing the bride before the
cerimony is considered bad luck primarily for the same reason because if the groom’s first sight and impression of the would-be bride was negative he too would head for the hills leaving the poor girl stranded at the altar. Today we are more civilized, brides wear white to denote virginity, grooms propose on one knee and limousines spirit the happy couples away but, in the past 500 years have we truly debunked some of the old marriage traditions? Today over 50% of marriages in North America end in separation or divorce. Hmmm, maybe not.

T’other day two guys gits outta ther car and goes ta the side of the road and carin not bout ladies and kids going by, they both ignerant like takes a wee wee. Well ta me the only thing they prove is ther brain ain’t the only small thing in ther body. Lots of cars n trucks lined up with flickers goin turnin left and wouldn’t ya know, a silver car in the right lane decides at the last second to go left too. Y’all got it, crunch, but that ain’t the laffer part, darned iffen she don’t then put her flicker on after the bumper dinger. Gotta wonder.
