a SPRING FRESH PLACE

to Daydream...

Each house has its own character that goes far beyond architectural style or colors

Older houses are a treat as they most often have a time -added presence and “aged wisdom” to them. These houses, however, also present us with plenty of challenges – planning furniture layouts for tighter spaces, carefully orchestrating between new finishes, furnishings and accessories, and existing moldings, door profiles, or any other element we would like to keep in order to maintain the existing character of the space. Having been dealing with similar dilemmas on behalf of recent clients of mine, who purchased a 100-year old home in Toronto, I decided to present here a design concept that focuses on solving a functional challenge in the living room. The existing area has a built-in wall cubby storage system, which was done by the previous owners. Even though it is not the prettiest sight, it proved to be very functional and my clients are happy to keep it for storage and display purposes. The challenge was to come up with a way of keeping the existing unit and “dressing it up”, relating it to the character of the house yet making a fresh and dynamic feature statement in the living room. The idea of picture frame display came to me when my clients mentioned they would like to use this shelving primarily to display the keepsakes from places around the world they have been to.

Choosing the right picture frame molding is key to this composition. What is also recommended in this application is creating an insert box to fit into each cubby accordingly, so that the edges of the picture frame will be flush with the sides of the gables in the unit. In this case, I am using up to four different styles – some with more elaborate gold leaf accent and others, of a plainer profile, and positioning them randomly inside the otherwise symmetrical cubbies. A contrasting back wall adds a sense of drama and makes the unit seem deeper then it really is. Another important element of the composition is the new built-in window bench and custom window treatments. This plush bench with tufted back and sides creates a cozy nook at the window to daydream. It also provides an elegant alternative and an extra seating space for the “three + two + one” living room seating arrangement – which otherwise would not have been possible in the smaller confines of the space. This composition keeps with the classical yet edgy style that my clients prefer. Therefore, the tufting would work well with a chesterfield upholstered in a cream velvet fabric and the leather wing chair paired with an ottoman that will complete the look. The color scheme of choice for this interior is of blues and crèmes, along with a dramatic accent of fuchsia, which adds an air of regal chic when trimmed with the silver and gold leaf of the picture frames. The overall result is an edgy vibrant interior with a classic sensibility, which still retains the required functionality of the space. Need Expert Design advice? Send us a plan of your space and photos, with a description of your challenge, and watch for the review and design suggestions in the next issue of All About Home.

Raising the Bar on Your Standard Closet This is the final article in a 6-part series about getting your closets organized. We have shared information about different gadgets and tools, different layouts and designs for your closets, as well as what materials they are made of - from baskets vs. bins to wire vs. laminate. We have talked about adding to your existing closet or raising the bar and creating a new standard in storage, in closets, in the way you live! I have shared my personal opinion about getting organized; what I think works best for different situations; and how I believe you would benefit the most by identifying and sticking to what works best for you and yours. I stressed that you would change even as your needs change, and that your closet can meet these requirements. I believe it is time to raise the bar in your standard closest. The single rod beneath a single shelf type should be banished from your home. We now know better and have better ways to use our storage space more effectively. Raise your expectations of your living space. Your time is valuable. We have better tools now, like cell phones, cars, fridges, stoves, drive thrust, etc. that make our life more efficient, easier, simpler, and are a joy and pleasure to use. It is time for those rooms that support you and your lifestyle to get working for you the way that suits you! Whether you are building a new home, moving to a new home or upgrading where you are, those “hidden” rooms - your closets - are a gold mine for simple cost effective changes that can improve your life and bring additional value to your home. It is a waste of your time to have to constantly refold, dig through, rebox, rearrange, and deal with constant frustration because of an outdated closet. You can have a closet that works for you exactly the way you progress through the day. You want your children’s closets to enable them to collect their own clothes and things to wear and use, a simple system that would let them find what they want or put away what they don’t. A convenient and easy place for the males in your family to hang their ties, belts, or hats and for the ladies, to keep their purses, jewellery, shoes, dresses, skirts, blouses, etc. Design your closets and storage spaces so that they work for you and with you. Save your time and energy for the joys of life! Make every room in your home what you need and want it to be. You use and access your closet every day shouldn’t it work well! Closets are no longer the rooms that don’t matter or fall into being good enough! You can do better. It is within reach!

Whether you select a few items as suggested earlier or decide to take the additional step to rework what you have into something you will one day realize you can’t imagine you have ever lived without - you do want to rethink closets! Raise the standard, raise the bar! Treat yourself to that additional free time every day that brings you peace and ease! Have the closet that works for you! You are worth it! I urge you to look around. Maybe you are a Do It Yourself type of person. Maybe you aren’t sure of the design or layout. Maybe you want someone else to create and install it. There is a company out there for each of these needs, desires, and approaches. Define your needs, calculate your budget, do some homework, set your priorities! Minimize Fuss Minimalism is one of the important trends of today’s kitchen fashion. Its principal features being simplicity, clean lines, and clarity, it creates the calm mood. The main idea is to avoid anything too flamboyant or provocative in the kitchen decor; then the esthetics of simple geometric shapes and neutral colours, including white, gray, or beige, will help you relax. Standout handles and swinging doors have been ever more replaced by smooth built-in doors or recessed kitchen-cabinets. Minimalism can manifest itself in the dishes’ shapes and colours. An example is square plates and cylindrical cups in the colour range of the decor.

Fantasy Island The kitchen island has been a popular trend for many years. Such an island can be approached from any direction creating the mood of freedom and stimulating culinary creativity. The working surface can contain a stovetop, a bar, a sink or working surface – anything you fancy, in short. Of course the island functions best in a spacious kitchen. Choose the dishes and decor in ethnic motifs, vivid or contrasting colours, simple shapes, and a pattern of stripes or spirals that will emphasize the originality and love of freedom of the happy owner of a kitchen island.

Colours without Borders Despite the popularity of minimalism in the kitchen many designers prefer bright neon colours in kitchen decor. This trend is a favourite with imaginative and happy people who don’t mind sharing their positive emotions with others. Choose a colour, any colour – from intense fuchsia to garish green. What is important is the simplicity

FOR ADVERTISEMENTS CALL (416) 477-6107

of shapes. A kitchen in vivid neon colours is reminiscent of an unusual alien civilization or a mysterious underwater world. In such a kitchen a teardrop-shaped sink and teardrop-shaped dishes in the same vivid colours as the interior decor will not look out of place. Your visitors will appreciate you conceptuality and imagination.

High-Tech in the Kitchen Details are the key word in the modern kitchen design. Numerous trade shows demonstrate built-in lighting that changes in accordance with the owners’ mood, drawers with regulated temperature for storing food, or a magnet for hang-drying napkins. In short, the inventors of the world try to ensure happiness generated by spending time in the kitchen. These wide choices will help homeowners not just implement the designer’s artistic ideas but create their own unique kitchen style as well.

PREPARING YOUR LAWN FOR SPRING Your spring cleaning that starts when the wintry weather is gone and the colorful blooms are back, should not limit itself to washing windows and dusting corners inside the house. Let us not forget the outside of your house – especially the lawn. Winter often leaves a lawn in a pretty bad shape, but every little thing you can do in your front and backyard helps.

There are a few tricks to achieving the same tidy and sparkling look for your lawn as the interior of your home after a thorough cleaning.

• Rake As soon as the lawn begins to wake up for the season, go over it lightly with a rake. Try not to disturb any new grass plants. Not only your first raking of the season will clear leaves, twigs and other debris, it will also allow you to evaluate the extent of any winter damage to your lawn. Check for early signs of pests or disease, and eliminate them before they cause any big problems.

• Aerate Soil of your lawn tends to become compacted during the previous summer and fall. Aerating means removing plugs of sod thus loosening the soil and letting water, air and fertilizer get down to the grass roots. If you have a large yard, consider an electric or gas aerator, for a small one, as well as for larger tough spots, use a manual aerating tool.

• Top dress After aerating, spread a thin layer of peat moss over the lawn with a rake (the experts call it “top dressing”). This step keeps conditioning the lawn throughout the year and giving the grass additional strength to resist disease, weeds and thatch. It also reduces the amount of water and fertilizer your grass will need.

• Weed Start weeding early in the season. Remove dandelions and other broadleaf weeds with a manual weeder before they start going to seed. Make sure you pull the whole weed up, complete with its root.

FOR ADVERTISEMENTS CALL (416) 477-6107

• Fix bare spots You can easily improve the look of your lawn by repairing the discolored patches. Clear away the dead-looking patches of grass, sprinkle grass seed on the newly exposed soil, add fertilizer, and keep the area moist until it sprouts.

• Do not forget to tune-up your tools in spring and make sure they are in good working condition. This goes for both your hand tools and your lawn mower that needs the oil and spark plugs change and sharpening the blade annually. These are but a few easy steps to make sure that your front and back lawn will look thriving and healthy for the rest of the summer season.

A FIREPLACE

IN A MODERN STYLE Modern decor is often minimalistic, streamlined, and laconic. It is limited in detail and accent. Therefore, every object within the thus decorated space has to be stylish but not opulent. A fireplace is just one of such objects. There is fashion in fireplaces like in everything else regarding style, and such ultramodern models are among the most fashionable. Man has always been fascinated by fire. Of course, the fire of today does not perform its vital function anymore – we use other sources to keep us warm, and use fire mostly to create comfort and charm in our homes.

The fireplace manufacturing is an everevolving art. Since the day when our distant ancestor assembled the first hearth in his cave, the fireplace has been constantly evolving; the fireplace of today is a combination of the engineering genius and artistic revelation.

from tinted glass, mirror surfaces, and antiquated metal. Geometrically-precise lines only outline the fire’s space seemingly not limiting it.

Projects by the best designers of the world convert everyday appliances that are part of a hi-tech style into real works of art, and fireplaces are no exception. They are created from man-made materials like metal, heat-resistant glass, mirror glass, and glass ceramics, to name a few. There is no limit to perfection, and modern designers boldly experiment with materials and shapes, blending styles and breaking traditions. Classic styles can be combined with Art Deco to create an extraordinary effect. The synthesis of fire and steel is the epitome of modern ideas. Oblong fireplaces-transformers are austere and laconic but are surprising in their interesting colour combinations or in blending advanced technologies with exquisite shapes. One can easily call ultramodern fireplaces avant-garde-style clothing for fire, made

For eclectic interiors manufacturers offer eclectic fireplaces that combine classic stone with metal surfaces, smooth textures with rough ones, or vivid colours with streamlined shapes. Lately, the North American market presents fireplaces with a TV screen inserted into a fake firebox, showing a recording of real fire. Of course, the imitation of anything leaves a lot to be desired, and nothing can replace live fire, no matter how artistically it is reproduced. Unfortunately, wood-burning fireplaces are a thing of the past in Canada and the US. You can still find them in older houses but new houses are built with artificial fireplaces only because wood- and coal-burning emissions are harmful to the environment. A console table is a type of table that can conveniently accommodate accessories and other items that are meant to be displayed. It is usually placed with its back against a wall or can be even attached to the wall if it has only two legs in the front. Free standing tables have four sturdy legs. • To help the eye perceive your composition as three-dimensional choose objects that differ in their size and height. Before arranging your “art gallery”, answer the objections of those who consider it just a dust-gathering headache. Yes, it does gather more dust, than, say, curtains or furniture but you need to dust every item in your surroundings just the same, and the beautiful result your will get from your console display is worth an extra effort - and at no extra cost, at that, but just by shifting accents on some objects already in your possession. Besides, you can always refresh or replace the displayed pieces for a special occasion like holidays or a family celebration or when you have gotten tired of old ones.

GLASS BRICKS our houses and apartments get more and more spacious and good-looking. We reject closed spaces in favour of private and public zones, but, at the same time, do not wish to abandon our customary comfort and intimacy. Huge windows and glass walls have become an integral part of a modern interior. They are fashionable, up-to-date, and, after all, natural because they add light, air, and weightlessness. Glass bricks have been long used in the construction industry. They are highly durable, heat- and soundproof, fire resistant, water resistant, transparent, longlasting, and require no special care. Despite all these excellent qualities, up until recently no one would have ever thought of using glass bricks as an interior decorating element. Nowadays, glass bricks have experienced a new life as a decorative material that has borrowed the best qual-

ities of its predecessors – greenish industrial glass blocks used for building walls in commercial, industrial, and other public edifices. This transformed building material became popular in interior decorating, used for architectural and design solutions in homes. Ever more often, we encounter high, low, straight, and rounded decorative glass brick dividers, transparent ceilings and arches, gazebos, and whole walls in private houses… Perfectly blending into the modern interior design, they form the space, emphasize its uniqueness, create special moods; they generate the sense of light, warmth, stability and elegance. New technologies help diversify glass bricks into an array of colours and textures making them suitable to every room in your house.

Transparent Glass Bricks A small apartment can use a transparent screen – let’s say, between the tiny entrance hall and the living room. Such a feature will serve as both a dividing and a uniting factor. Transparent glass bricks filter out only 15% of the incoming light letting through the other 85%. Because they are less transparent than windowpanes, the images on the other side become somewhat distorted and fuzzy allowing people to avoid that aquarium feeling.

riffled Glass Bricks Riffled glass can be light-diffusing or light-directing, depending on the arrangement of the facets. Such colourless textural blocks usually have romantic names like Wave, Double Wave, or Drop. They diffuse light, transforming people and objects on the other side into contours and silhouettes, thus adding an element of mystery into their surroundings.

Non-Transparent Glass Bricks These let through just 50 percent of the light and can have a nontransparent surface either on one or on both sides.

Colour Glass Bricks Colour blocks also filter out one half of the incoming light. They preserve their transparency and beauty and create that festive feeling day in and day out. They will make your home bright and happy even on a dreariest day. Dividers and screens made of colour glass blocks may be either solid or multicoloured. They look great in bathrooms, living rooms, nurseries, and home theatres. They are unique in their ability to ensure light transparency on one hand and create intimacy and privacy on the other. Composite colour glass bricks can create a snack nook or a bar area in a living room, a computer corner, a winter garden or a

solarium. The same glass wall will look different depending on whether the light is natural or artificial, its angle, and decorative backlighting, always making your living space look new and unusual. Some companies offer unique glass bricks that are not just a decorative material but real works of art. They are created by applying a design made of tiny coloured glass bubbles on the surface of the glass. Use such glass blocks to create large landscapes, abstract or animalistic images. The most popular in today’s interior design non-transparent custom glass bricks imitate the texture of such natural stones as marble, granite, or malachite, as well as denim, sunlit water, etc. They are used for creating an integrated design theme.

Glass Bricks with Inserts Bricks with various theme inserts are custom created by designers for use in special projects. For example, a panel studded with seashells, a starfish, and corals will fit a bathroom, another one, with dry flowers, cereals and artificial fruit and vegetables, the kitchen, while for a nursery you may wish to use glass bricks with miniature fairytale characters inserts. Deciding on such decorations remember not to overdo it lest they lose their unique masterpiece status.

or What is due to go to the trash Nothing lasts forever in this world, nothing – from vitamins to mattresses, from make-up to appliances – N-O-T-H-I-N-G! Let’s walk around your home and decide which of our possessions are short-lived and which, can live longer. Bedroom Lower Your Risk of Allergies. Replace your pillows every year. While we sleep, our pillow absorbs skin oils, particles of the night cream, shampoo, mousses and gels used on our face and hair during the day. We toss and turn, pressing all these

‘treasures’ deeper and deeper into the pillow where they are becoming nutrients for bacteria and dust mites. Using the thickest pad under your pillowcase, while extending the pillow’s life, will not prolong it beyond a couple of years at best.

Sleep Tight. Replace your mattress every five to ten years. Ideally, a high-quality mattress is good for nine to ten years but if you are restless in your sleep, if you toss and turn, replace even the best quality mattress no later than after five to seven years of use.

Kitchen Take Your Vitamins while they are effective. Toss the vitamins and supplements that are eighteen months old even though the label proclaims them to be effective for two or three years. After the container’s seal has been broken, the contents should be kept no longer than twelve months. The Purest Water. Household water filters can serve 20% longer than claimed in the instruction manual. The reason is in the reserve, provided by the manufacturer in case the consumer forgets to change the cartridge on time. Also, the amount of water these filters can purify is a time and half higher than specified in the instruction manual. Block Food Bacteria. No cook can do without a cutting board. Its age has no bearing on its quality while its cleanliness does – that is in the case of wood or glass boards. Plastic boards need to be replaced at least once every six months. To avoid contamination, wash the board in hot water with detergent, and then rinse with vinegar dissolved in water. Leave for five minutes, rinse with running water, and dry with a

The Age of Beauty. When your mascara reaches the age of six month, consider it old. Dispose of mascara, eyeliner, and eye shadows half a year after you have started using them because their applicators and brushes tend to pick up the dust and bacteria accumulated on your eyelids and lashes. Other make-up products have a longer life - for example, foundation and toner, up to two years while dry products, like powder and pencils, up to three years.

clean towel. These procedures will kill even the worst bacteria including salmonella and E-coli. You need more than one cutting board in the kitchen – at least one for raw food and one for cooked dishes. Vegetables and meat are best cut on a glass board.

Bathroom Keep Your Eyes Open. Change your contact lenses cleaning solution regularly. While in your eyes, the lenses gather myriads of microbes from your tear fluid and the environment. Still, bacteria from the environment can easily get into the cleaning solution, especially when the top is not screwed on properly or the container is left completely open. To avoid infection, replace the solution every three months. A Hollywood Smile. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months. Dentists recommend disposing of even the most advanced - vibrating or ‘360-degrees’ - models after the above-mentioned life term because during this period the bristles manage to collect enough bacteria to cause caries.

No Flakes. Dandruff shampoo keeps its qualities for years because most of the shampoos for skin and scalp problems contain antibacterial agents that increase their longevity. Nevertheless, if you like diluting your shampoo with water do it in a separate container – should you add water into the original container, your shampoo will lose its protective qualities. Medicinal Alcohol. This one definitely has no “good before” date. Alcohol will kill microbes for many many years even after the bottle has been opened. Any domestic detergent containing alcohol is “good before” its container is empty.

Lutron RadioRA 2 Home Control System By Darryl Wilkinson •

http://www.hometheater.com/content/lutron-radiora-2-home-control-system

Wireless Wish Fulfilament What I wanted was a lighting-control system that could reliably communicate with the various switchers and dimmers around the house; let me control one, two, or all of them when I wanted to; and, especially, take control of those devices when I didn’t want to (or forgot). And I didn’t want to do any major modifications to the house’s wiring. What could be so difficult about that? Well, according to the Lutron marketing materials, the RadioRA 2 system was designed specifically for me—or at least people in situations similar to mine. Like any sophisticated automation system, there are two basic aspects of the RadioRA 2 system: the hardware and the software to control it. Hardware-wise, the RadioRA 2 system starts with a Main Repeater ($499), which is basically a central hub that communicates with all the other devices (things like dimmers and switches) and tells each of them what to do and when. Devices in the system must be located within 30 feet of a Repeater, and you can use one or more Auxiliary Repeaters to extend the system’s range in sprawling homes or ones with detached garages, spacious pools and patios, or chicken coops. (My system needed one Auxiliary Repeater along with the Main Repeater for proper coverage.) RadioRA 2 systems are limited to 100 devices, but you can add a second Main Repeater to increase the total to 200. The repeaters are small—not much larger than a paperback book—and are usually installed in out-of-the-way places, such as under stairs or in closets. They pretty much never need to be touched by the homeowner’s hands. Although technically it doesn’t have to be, it’s best if the Main Repeater is connected via its Ethernet port to your home network. (There’s no built-in Wi-Fi.) This makes downloading the programming and future updates easier for the installer, but it’s also necessary if you want to use Lutron’s iPad/iPod or Android apps to control the system. (And you will want to.) RadioRA 2 Wireless Dimmers and Switches ($149 to $199) replace your existing light switches and typically make up the majority of the devices in the system. To the world, they look like standard Decora-style dimmers/switches. They can function that way, too, because even in the unlikely event that the Main Repeater gets destroyed in a freak plumbing accident or is swallowed by a spontaneously erupting miniature wormhole, you can still dim the attached lights or switch them on or off. (Your homeowner’s insurance may not cover wormhole damage, however.) Plug-in Dimmers, like the one I use with the torchiere lamp in my theater room, also communicate wirelessly with the system.

Pressing Engagements The Hybrid seeTouch sixbutton keypad is perfect for a variety of applications because it’s both a single-zone dimmer and a programmable six-button keypad. For example, I use a seeTouch keypad in the downstairs bathroom to control the lights (and exhaust fan) in that one room. The built-in dimmer controls the light above the tub, while another button turns on the mirror lights for shaving. The rest of the buttons are programmed to create specific lighting scenes—the aspect of an LCS that has the effect

24

ALL ABOUT HOME

of creating many rooms out of one. One button dims the main overhead light and the tub lights while turning off everything else, including the exhaust fan, for a relaxing atmosphere when soaking in the tub. Another button turns on every light at full blast and fires up the fan for that one day a year when I clean the bathroom. The bottom button turns everything off. Other Hybrid keypads in the house are programmed to control more than just the lights in one room. For instance, buttons on the bedroom keypad control the ceiling-fan light, as well as the fan, while another button opens and closes the garage door. A fourth controls the exterior deck lights, while a button labeled Panic can turn on every light in the house in the middle of the night. On each of the Hybrid keypads that replaced the existing light switches at the exterior doors, I’ve programmed a Goodbye button that turns off every light and fan in the house. Both keypads also have Vacation buttons that tell the system to follow preprogrammed commands and turn various lights on or off in a semi-random pattern in order to make it look like we’re still at home. The tabletop keypads work similarly, except that they’re portable and don’t have a built-in dimmer. I have a 15-button keypad in the master bedroom that controls more lights and creates more scenes than the Hybrid keypad in the wall does, as well as a 10-button keypad in the theater room. Both the in-wall and tabletop keypads have adjustable backlighting and can indicate with a subtle LED whether specific lights are on or off, a feature that’s extremely handy in the middle of the night. About the only part of the entire RadioRA 2 system I’ve found to complain about is the plain, probablylooked-cool-when-ABBA-first-became-popular styling of these keypads. Truthfully, the only reason this is even an issue is because everything else in the system (including the wall plates, dimmers, and switches that are available in umpteen billion different colors and finishes) looks so darn good. The Pico wireless control is a snazzy little remote that can be used handheld, in a tabletop mount, or mounted on the wall as if it were a built-in keypad. It’s a simple remote for turning on/off or dimming one or more lights and has a circular button in the center that can be programmed to bring a single light to a preset level or a group of lights to individual preset levels. We use them in the kids’ bedrooms, on the nightstand in the master bedroom, and on the wall by the tub in the downstairs bathroom—places where a full-blown tabletop keypad would have been overkill.

A floral bouquet is the best way to show your feeling and cheer up someone you love. Sometimes, the problem is to choose the right set of flowers among the myriads of kinds growing around the world. Some people love lilies, others, prefer daffodils, yet another, wildflowers. Stage and movie stars have their preferences just like everybody else. It is a known fact that the brightest star of Hollywood Marilyn Monroe adored red roses that symbolize flaming love. No wonder – the actress always strived to be the centre of attention, surrounded by fans, and red roses conveyed this message perfectly. Audrey Hepburn, on the contrary, valued the modest lily-of-thevalley for its exquisite charm and fragrance. orchids preferred by Salma Hayek reflect the fragility and vulnerability hidden under her passionate Latin temperament. These flowers are volatile and, at the same time, very tender and refined – just like the actress who likes them. Both Britney Spears and Madonna openly prefer white roses. These two strong and resolute women of the world can

sometimes indulge themselves in being seemingly weak and defenceless, just like the beautiful flower they favour. Chrysanthemums and violets that embody wisdom, nobility, and dignity often emphasize Nicole Kidman’s sophistication and elegance. Unusual beauty and grace of Charlize Theron rival the wonderful natural harmony and romantic refinement of freesias. The rampage of colours and headiness of a bouquet of freesias bring to mind a spectacular flowerbed. The proud tulip is the favourite of Alyssa Milano. By the way, tulips, for their independent character and solemn beauty, are among the very few flowers that can be presented to men. even if you are unsure of what kind of flowers your intended recipient prefers go ahead and make your choice – they are sure to add harmony and beauty to anyone’s life!

n i a r D d e g g Clo Causes for drain clogs could be numerous, but what they are is just the gradual accumulation of organic matter, hair and grease on the inside walls of drainpipes. Over time, this buildup slows down the normal flow of water through the pipe. If you noticed water in your sink slowly twirl around instead of literally go down the drain – do not despair: the majority of clogged drain problems are easy enough to be fixed on your own. Do not rush to the nearest store to buy chemicals dubbed as miracle solution for clearing any clog; try household remedies first. Like in the case of many other everyday solutions, salt can help with clearing the clog. Pour half a cup of salt down the drain followed by boiling water. Continue to flush with very hot tap water until the clog has cleared. A more unusual remedy is plain yogurt - pour a cup of it down the drain and leave it for several hours. For the drain clogged with hair try the logical hair-removal solution - the same hair remover you use on unwanted hair on your body and face (Nair or Veet). Pour a whole bottle down the drain and leave for about half-hour and then follow with hot water. It should work. Of course, no one has cancelled the miracles of baking or washing

soda - shake a half box of baking soda down the drain and follow it with a cup of vinegar. Cover the opening with a paper towel or a dish rag since it will bubble and foam. When it stops foaming, flush the drain with very hot water for 2-3 minutes. Washing soda is an excellent choice for helping drains stay clear. Actually even at the best of times in the relationship between you and your drains use washing soda on your drains once a week to keep them clear. Just pour 1/4 cup or so down the drain, and then flush with water. In more serious cases, try to open up the drain pipe, get a water hose, put it up through the drain pipe, and turn your water on. It will hit the clog and wash it out. Another way to clear up your plumbing is by using a simple plunger. Though most people use the plunger for toilets, remember that you can use a separate one for drains in your sink. When using a plunger, apply a great deal of force when pressing its handle down. Wait a minute and then see if the clog has cleared. Repeat the process as necessary. If, after all this, you are still having problems with clogged drains, try the first tool a plumber would use if called to your assistance – buy a drain-clearing “snake” at your local plumbing or hardware store. Of course if all else fails, you will need to call a plumber.

KNOW YOUR DISPOSER Garbage disposal units are widely used in North American households (in Canada, they are commonly called garburators). The garbage disposal was invented in 1927 by John W. Hammes, an architect working in Racine, Wisconsin. After eleven years of development, his InSinkErator company put his disposer on the market in 1940. General Electric tried to dispute Hammes’ claim as the company introduced a garbage disposal unit in 1935. Many North-American cities used to have regulations prohibiting running food waste into the system citing potential sewer problems. Nevertheless, garburator acquired great popularity on this continent. A waste disposal unit is an electrically powered device, installed under a kitchen sink, which shreds food waste into pieces small enough to pass through plumbing. Waste is fed into a chamber above the turntable and drops on the turntable.

it, among them – large bones, tendons, and fibrous parts of vegetables, for example, artichokes. Onion peels cannot be shredded either. All the above-mentioned types of waste jam the machine. When feeding the disposer, make sure no cutlery gets inside the chamber together with the food scraps. Your stainless steel knife or a silver spoon will not be ground to powder – rather they will acquire a shape of an intricate abstract sculpture and will be almost sure to jam the device. Some disposers are easy to unclog while others require extra efforts. High-end disposers have a function of signaling the impossibility of processing the load inside. Other waste dangerous for your garburator may include threads, rags, plastic bags that wind around the movable parts increasing the machine’s workload. This can lead to negative results. If you noticed some debris that is not desirable for the disposer, stop the operation immediately, and get it out. Another threat for the device is hot oil, fat, and other substances that may coat its internal parts and even cause your sewer backup.

Those unfamiliar with the device will probably ask what kinds of waste exactly can this miraculous gadget process? If we believe the manufacturers’ claims - any kind. In reality it is not so. Yes, the appliance can shred almost any vegetable and most of the fruits; they can manage watermelon rind, eggshells, walnuts, fish and meat trims and even chicken and fish bones. The device can ‘devour’ non-food waste like cigarette stubs, paper napkins, and such. Yet the disposer is not a miracle worker – there are types of waste that you should not put into

28

ALL ABOUT HOME

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

To prevent bad odors run tap water into the working disposer chamber for at least thirty seconds after the last of the trash has been shredded and washed down. Should you detect any odor, start the disposer when empty and run water while pouring about half a package of baking soda into the chamber. Waste disposers make very little noise and can process a substantial volume of trash in just a couple of minutes. The only thing required from you is to make sure no undesirable waste gets into it. To extend the device longevity read the manufacturer’s instruction manual carefully.
