L-R: Jamie Murphy and Fintan Kelly in Enniscorthy Drama Group’s ‘Pvt. Wars’.
Enniscorthy Drama Group has come up with yet another brilliant success and in the process has unearthed not one, but two new wonderful local talents. Pvt. Wars by James McLure is an extremely humorous and at the same time deeply upsetting play about three Vietnam soldiers coping with post war physical and emotional wounds. Set in the psychiatric ward of a veterans’ hospital, in the vein of that very popular film and television series M*A*S*H, full of terrific one-liners coupled with intense sadness and at times despair. Gately (Fintan Kelly), a big Georgian hillbilly is constantly trying to fix a disembowelled radio stating, “that if a guy like me can fix a radio then America can work”. Silvio (Jamie Murphy), a streetwise, big city type is addicted to flashing even though he has lost his genitals to shrapnel on the battlefield and Natwick (Podge Dwyer) – the odd man out – is a prissy rich kid from Long Island and a probable dormant homosexual whose intelligence and
education only serve to make him even more aware of his inadequacies. Doesn’t sound like fun but the literary wizardry of James McLure blends these three broken characters into an evocative tableau that is reminiscent, spellbinding, thought-provoking but above all tremendously entertaining. B r i l l i a n t l y d i re c t e d b y Enniscorthy Drama Group Chairman, Colum Coomey, and expertly performed by local lads Fintan Kelly, Jamie Murphy and Podge Dwyer. Jamie Murphy, who is no stranger to stage and drama having performed in almost all of our productions to date including Ritual For Dolls and Tom, Dick & Harry and who directed our last play Glengarry Glen Ross, was at his usual pristine best as the dashing, flashing and completely psychotic Silvio, but the other two guys were a revelation. Fintan Kelly in his second ever production commanded the stage as the mentally disabled Gately. He never once dropped his Georgia drawl and his facial expressions
were a study in themselves. Fintan is a natural – he was born to act, the only puzzle is what took him so long! And speaking of natural Podge Dwyer has found his place and that is most definitely on stage. He is remarkably relaxed and confident and plays the mammy’s boy Natwick to perfection in his first ever performance. But watch this one, he has a future in drama and Enniscorthy Drama Group are delighted to have both himself and Fintan join the ranks. Already the crew have notched up a second placing on the One Act Circuit losing out in Birr by only three points. Their next venture on the circuit is in Dundrum in Dublin on 7th November. But catch these guys here at home again tonight (Weds 5th) at 8pm at The Presentation Centre where they will be joined by the Blackwater Wayside Players performing Losers. For €10 it’s a night’s entertainment not to be missed! So come join us and see for yourself the level of fantastic talent in Enniscorthy. – Maria Nolan
