Welcome

Bottom Excelsior Springs Photos by Liz Johnson, Brian Rice, Kevin Morgan | Elms Photo by Liz Johnson, Excelsior Springs Standard

Tucked into the hilly region just outside Kansas City, Excelsior Springs’ history began almost by chance. For years, the springs that eventually gave the community its name were known for their unusual odors and colors – and people steered clear of them. But as the story goes, a man whose daughter was afflicted with a skin disease turned to those waters as a last resort, and the girl was cured. Others say that the medicinal powers of the springs were discovered even earlier than that by a Native American. But while the origins are in question, what’s undisputed is that by 1880, the fledgling town was attracting hundreds of people to the Fishing River Valley. And the rest, as they say, is history. First called Viginti after the Italian word for “20,” the number of known springs at the time, the community was soon re-christened Excelsior Springs. For the first several decades of its existence, the city was the very definition of a boomtown, with bathhouses and medical clinics on nearly every corner and dozens of hotels, inns, boarding houses and other lodging popping up to accommodate the constant stream of visitors. Decades later, the town that water built is still going strong. The past lives on through such landmarks as the Hall of Waters, the Elms Hotel and Spa, the old Clay County State Bank building (now the home of the Excelsior Springs Museum & Archives) and numerous other buildings with historic charm. Even the casual visitor can’t miss the gems that bring tourists back time and time again. Golfers relish swinging their clubs at the Excelsior Springs Golf Course, designed in the 1910s by worldfamous golf course architect Tom Bendelow. The older part of town is dotted with green, as well – the beautiful park system was designed by famous landscape architect George Kessler. But, Excelsior Springs doesn’t rely solely on the past. In addition to new residential and commercial development on the west side of town, the downtown area is undergoing a revival that has brought in numerous small businesses to breathe life into the community’s heart. Come and explore Excelsior Springs. We have a rich history, one-of-a-kind shopping, delicious dining, fun and exciting activities and the friendliest people you’re likely to find anywhere.

O

n behalf of the citizens of Excelsior Springs, it is a pleasure to invite you to a most unique and special place. You can soak, dance, golf, enjoy the work of local artists, shop and walk – there is much to enjoy in the historic city of Excelsior Springs, Missouri. The community boasts four shopping districts, three on the west side and one in historic downtown, each offering an interesting and eclectic mix of shopping, history, eating establishments and cultural opportunities. Historically, Excelsior Springs meant excellence in tourism and health. Visitors flocked to Excelsior Springs’ health spas, Terry Sme lc clinics, hotels, restaurants Chamber D er, ir ector and entertainment establishments. Promoted nationally and worldwide, Excelsior Springs became a premier destination for health and relaxation. The Elms Hotel was reputed to be a favorite haunt of the infamous Al Capone. Former president Harry Truman also enjoyed the Elms and its European-style spa. Truman stayed at the Elms on the night of his victory over Thomas Dewey in the 1948 presidential election. Although the mineral water industry declined in the 60’s, the mineral water history is still a vital part of our community. Spa lovers can find several opportunities to relax and unwind throughout town and much of the historic fabric of the original town can been seen in the revitalized downtown shopping district. The Chamber office, located at 461 South Thompson Ave., is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday. The Hall of Waters Visitor Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

reated by the National Industrial Recovery Act as part of the New Deal during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s time in office, the Public Works Administration, created in June of 1933, awarded a $1 million grant for a project that would gather the various mineral waters in Excelsior Springs together in one location. The grant was used to purchase the mineral water rights, pipe the waters to a new bottling facility and construct the building. Included in the structure was a mineral water pool and hydrotherapy baths as well as its innovative water bar known as “the world’s longest water bar.” Four miles of pipe were used to bring 10 mineral waters to the central unit, which included: White Sulphur, Salt Sulphur, SulphoSaline, Park Lithia, Excelsior Saline, Jones Soda, Lithia No. 1, the Keystone Lithia, Siloam and Regent. On May 27, 1936, the first cornerstone was lowered into place and the event was broadcast by CBS to 62 stations across the country. Using native stone and a unique Art Deco style accentuated by North American carvings, the Hall of Waters became world-renowned for its architecture, healing mineral waters and services offered for many years.

The result was the beautiful, Art Deco-styled Hall of Waters.

Today, the building houses most of the city offices and a visitor center operated by the Downtown Excelsior Partnership. The water bar area also features a self-guided tour through the history of Excelsior Springs. In June 1993, the building was placed on the National Register of History Places. he Excelsior Springs Museum & Archives, located in the 100 block of E. Broadway, houses the largest collection of Excelsior Springs artifacts and art anywhere around.

In recent years, the museum has supplemented its extensive collection of local memorabilia by hosting a series of traveling exhibits that expand upon and delve more deeply into the fabric of American life. But the contents of the museum are only half of the attraction. The museum itself is an invaluable treasure. Designed in 1905 by noted Kansas City architect Louis Curtiss, the Clay County State Bank building was finished in 1906 at a cost of $25,000. Unique features include an arched ceiling that showcases hundreds of individual light bulbs nestled in decorative fixtures. At either end of this chamber, reproductions of two paintings by Jean-Francois Millet – “The Gleaners” and “The Angelus” – are considered to be invaluable today. In 1932, W.T. Kemper Sr. and his sons purchased controlling interests in the bank. It remained a bank building until 1968, at which point the Kemper family sold it for $1 to the city of Excelsior Springs for use as a museum. In 2002, a restoration project began to revert some of the building’s features back to their original designs, especially the elaborate interior decorations that were distinctive of Curtiss’ style. The museum is manned by volunteers who are knowledgeable about local history and helpful to assist visitors in their quest for all things Excelsior Springs.

estled in the rolling hills of northwest Missouri is the last fully equipped 19th century woolen mill in the U.S.

Camping, fishing, swimming and picnicking areas that include a shelter house, are wrapped around the 1860 woolen mill and gristmill, the Watkins 1850 Classic Revival house, Visitor Center and Museum and heirloom gardens. All this, plus additional outbuildings, make up the historic site once known as the Bethany Farm, owned by the Watkins family. Waltus and his wife, Mary Ann, along with their children, built the farm into a successful agricultural and industrial complex. They raised livestock, harvested grain and other crops, had extensive orchards and a dairy. In the 1850s, the family added brick kilns, sawmills, a gristmill, the woolen factory and its supported structures, a

school and a church. The mill has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and a National Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Want to know what it was really like back in the late 1800s? The Living History Farm Program, offered on selected weekends in the spring and fall, brings the 1870s back to life with costumed interpreters demonstrating agricultural and industrial activities. Visitors are encouraged to participate in an interactive living history farm program. Try rail splitting using 1800s hand tools, making toys, washing clothes by hand and discovering old gardening techniques and more. Nature lovers can enjoy one of the park’s’ hiking, equestrian, bicycling and interpretive trails, as well as 100 wooded campsites.

O

ne of the most widely visited historic sites in Clay County is the Jesse James Farm and Museum in Kearney. Just a 15 minute drive from Excelsior Springs into the beautiful pastoral countryside, it isn’t hard to imagine why Robert and Zerelda James fell in love with the area when they visited here in 1842. Robert bought the old cabin with its lush acreage and settled down with his wife and then infant child, Frank. The man who would be immortalized for his outlaw exploits and notorious death at the hands of a gang member in 1882, Jesse Woodson James was born in the little cabin on Sept. 5, 1847. While Frank James led the way into the bushwhacking lifestyle during the Civil War, it would be his brother Jesse, who became the enigmatic figure of whom historians have written and men have attempted to emulate.

Handsome with piercing blue eyes, Jesse was full of personality and fun-loving. At the Jesse James Farm and Museum, visitors can view an informative video that describes the life Missouri pioneers lived in the mid-1800s, before, during and after the war. In addition, the museum houses a number of family artifacts and treasures belonging to the James family, along with a staff wellversed on the James family history as well as those whom have attempted to debunk the myth. Along with offering daily tours of the museum and cabin, a number of fun activities and events are held throughout the year. The Friends of the James Farm hosts several Black Powder Shoots during the year, as well as their annual reunion held in June each year. There a visitor can hobnob with a few James family descendants and learn more about this family who figured so prominently in Missouri history.

good glass of wine should be honored, savored and appreciated. A deep, abiding respect for those who work the vineyards is just as important. Whether you’re a seasoned wine drinker or are still trying to figure out the difference between chardonnay and champagne, the Excelsior Springs Wine Fest offers an opportunity to get to know types of wines, wine-making methods and the labels that have made Missouri famous in the American wine market. The festival, now a 2-day celebration, is scheduled for Friday, June 21 from 5 to 10 p.m., and Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Elms Hotel and Spa, 401 Regent Ave., is a celebration of art, food and Missouri wine. The festival is sponsored by the Downtown Excelsior Partnership (DEP) with cooperation from the Missouri Wine & Grape Board, The Elms Hotel & Spa and others. The Missouri Wine & Grape Board are

always on hand to conduct wine testing, which wine enthusiasts will find informative. There are currently over 100 wineries in Missouri with five wine trails. Guests who attend the Board’s wine sampling generally receive a brochure on Missouri’s wineries and wine varietals, plus a Winery Passport and Tasting Journal, a brochure of the current Governor’s Cup Award Winners and a sampling of at least four wines. An assortment of local bands keep festival goers entertained throughout the day, along with delicious food demonstrations, that always include a sample of the dish prepared using a local or regional wine. The festival also features craft and art vendors that add to the air of refinement and class. Tickets are affordably priced, with discounts for advance purchases, and include a number of samples and the option to buy additional wine by the glass, bottle or case.

In addition to Gatsby Days, the Cultural Guild has some other events they’ll be pulling off this year. The goal for each of their events is to raise money to help

provide scholarships for youth pursuing an education in the arts. They will kick off 2013 with a Mardi Gras Mask-erade fundraiser on Feb. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m., at The Hall of Waters, followed by a St. Patrick’s Day dinner featuring live entertainment on March 17, at Ventana Cafe beginning at 6 p.m. The Excelsior Springs Cultural Guild is always looking for community volunteers to lend a helping hand with their community outreach efforts. uring the hottest part of the year, Excelsior Springs stays nice and cool as it embraces its water-based heritage. Designed to celebrate the past, present and future, Waterfest is one of the biggest gatherings of the year. It draws over 60 vendors, a wide variety of activities and entertainment and thousands of attendees for a weekend full of fun. Held the last weekend in June, Waterfest kicks off in style with a special flag-raising ceremony on Friday evening and then opens to the public. Booths with all sorts of attractions and merchandise, from fine art to fundraisers, food, services and crafts are located in the historic downtown district. Dunk tanks and other activities echo the water theme of the weekend. Local and regional musicians play throughout the festival in just about every genre. The festivities include a Little Mr. and Miss Waterfest Pageant, a grand parade, dog races, kids’ games, a 5K run/walk, strongest man competition, art exhibits and a vintage car show as just a few of the activities planned. Waterfest can also be a place to hob nob with celebrities as the past two years featured a number of current and former Kansas City Chiefs as parade grand marshals. Held since the early 1980s, Waterfest is eagerly anticipated every year – it’s the chamber’s best, fun-filled weekend of the summer.

BLUES GARDEN O

n most Saturday nights during the summer, blues music rings out over downtown Excelsior Springs as Wabash BBQ hosts its Ice House Blues Garden concert series. Held May through September, the music begins at 7 p.m., in the outdoor venue adjacent to the former Wabash Railway Station constructed in 1927, now housing Wabash BBQ, 646 S. Kansas City Ave., in the historic Elms District. The series features some of the most popular blues/blues-rock bands in the metro area as well as the Midwest. There’s no cover charge for the concerts, but audiences are encouraged to arrive early and bring lawn chairs. For more information, call 816-630-7700.

Dozens of competitive smoke-cooking teams turn out that weekend for Excelsior Springs’ BBQ & Fly-In on the River, and thousands of people follow the haze of smoke and party-time atmosphere for one of the most exciting and colorful events to take place in the downtown area. Friday night opens the event with the fragrance of barbecue and smoke filling the air, while those attending enjoy taking in the creativity of the team names, cookers, booths and campsites. Live music fills the air outside the Hall of Waters, giving visitors a chance to pull up a lawn chair and listen. On Saturday, the judging begins, with prize winners vying for a chance to compete at the big BBQ contest at the American Royal. Meanwhile at Excelsior Springs airport, dozens of small and vintage aircraft arrive for those who love to simply get an up close and personal look at the planes, for kids wanting a free plane ride or WWII veterans who may just get a ride in a vintage warplane.

CHRISTMASTIME IS MAGICAL

C

hristmas is an exciting time in Excelsior Springs, with more than a month’s worth of events. The season kicks off with a full day of activities on the Saturday before Thanksgiving – this year, Nov. 23. This day marks the opening of the beautiful Hall of Trees, located in the water bar area of the historic Hall of Waters, where over 30 Christmas trees are uniquely decorated by community businesses and civic groups. Visitors can enjoy the Hall of Trees from the Saturday before Thanksgiving until Jan. 1. The beautiful Lane of Lights also opens on Nov. 23 this year. Sponsored by the Excelsior Springs Christmas Committee, the lane is a magical drive full of lighted displays that transform downtown’s East Valley Park into an enchanted forest. The Lane of Lights is located on 10 Highway and Lover’s Lane. It’s open weekends and holiday evenings beginning at 5 p.m. through Dec. 25. A number of additional events take place downtown the Saturday before Thanksgiving – the Lighted Christmas Parade, held after dark, it brings a number of creative, imaginative, lighted floats, cars, trucks and more together transforming the downtown into a magical, colorful kingdom. Just before the parade, visitors can enjoy the sweet voices of the combined area Elementary School’s Choirs as they serenade the crowd with a medley of the songs of the season. The parade is capped off by the Mayor’s Tree & Courtyard Lighting at the Hall of Waters. The Excelsior Springs Museum & Archives always has activities for children to enjoy as well as the long-awaited Photos with Santa. During the month-long festivities, another favorite is a progressive tour of the community’s restaurants as visitors get a Taste of Excelsior Springs. About a dozen restaurants offer samples of their most popular menu items, as the participants collect stamps on their tasting “passports.” The passports are placed in a drawing for prizes at the end of the event. A few weeks into the Christmas season, the Holiday Homes Tour has become one of the most popular events in the area. Five local families open their homes for an afternoon and evening of viewing on the first weekend in December; area businesses assist them in decorating their houses for the tour, which is one of the Christmas Committee’s biggest fundraisers. Various businesses throughout town also host their own holiday events, ranging from craft and gift making to visits by Santa Claus and everything in between. www.ESChristmas.com.

MINERAL WATER BOWL

W

ith the chill of late fall in the air, football fans gather the first Saturday in December for the annual Mineral Water Bowl, an eagerly anticipated game that began in 1948. Started by the Quarterback Club because there weren’t any state playoffs back then, the Quarterback Club wanted to see who was the best team in the state. The Mineral Water Bowl became an annual college game in 1951 and was discontinued for 17 years from 1975 to 1992. The Mineral Water Bowl is now one of two Division II bowl games affiliated with the MIAA. It and the Kanza Bowl

get the two best in-conference teams who do not make the playoffs. The bowl game is near and dear to the hearts of most Excelsior Springs natives, since the local team won the first two MWB championships. The first Mineral Water Bowl inspired a lot of festivities throughout Excelsior Springs with businesses displaying the colors of the two teams, a parade and a pre-bowl dance held at the Elms Resort & Spa ballroom. Today, there is a meet and greet for the teams, plenty of tailgating and an influx of fans from the competing teams towns as well as die-hard Excelsior Springs football fans.

In 2000 the MWB switched to NCAA Division II competition and had become more exciting each year. In the years since the return of the MWB in 1992, the Bowl has raised over $90,000 that has been donated to athletic and academic activities for the youth of the community. The Mineral Water Bowl is now a staple of Excelsior Springs’ history and future – kept alive through 63 years of dedicated Quarterback Club members and fans. The Quarterback Club supports all kinds of activities at the high school. They take care of a few underprivileged families during holidays and offer two scholarships to outstanding high school students.

Excelsior Springs Memorial Airport

E

xcelsior Springs Memorial Airport has been pumping up its activities over the past year and the airport has been the site of a number of fundraiser events that have brought many to the picturesque airport for fly-ins, meals and genuine fun.

The 2012 Fly-In last August was a huge success with nearly 70 airplanes flying into the airport, the sale of 550 meals and 100 kids flying on Young Eagles flights. It was a steady stream of visitors from start to finish. The day was beautiful and included U.S. Representative Sam Graves, who flew his T-6 Texan into the event, as well as the landing of the KCTV 5 News chopper. Additional events and fundraisers continued throughout the year with the first annual Chili Bowl Fly-In, with aircraft flying in from Minnesota and the east coast. In early December, the last fly-in of 2012 provided a successful pancake breakfast on a morning too foggy for more than seven planes to land – yet 70 people still showed their support by coming to the breakfast.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

OUR CLAIM TO FAME ... THE WATERS From Lewis and Clark in 1804 to 2013, Excelsior Springs is MAKING HISTORY

L

Ford is famous for having been the man who took down Jesse James on April 3, 1882, in St. Joseph, Missouri. During the 1830s, a few communities sprang up around what is now known as Excelsior Springs – Prathersville, Fredericksburg, Greenville and Claysville. The 1830s saw some unrest in the area concerning the Latter-day Saints settlers and the local pioneers. The pioneers had issues with the Mormon beliefs and the Mormons themselves had problems within their group. From 1834 to 1839, the problems between the two groups escalated, resulting in bloodshed and an “Extermination Order” issued by Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs on Oct. 27, 1838. The great statesman and former state legislator Alexander Doniphan stepped in for the Mormon group and saved the day. Doniphan is remembered today as a hero in the state of Missouri. The 1850s brought even more unrest to the state – especially to the border area between Missouri and Kansas. A bloody civil war was brewing all over the U.S. and simmering like a cauldron of oil here. There was plenty of bloodshed between Kansas Jayhawkers and Missouri bushwhackers, which escalated once the war began. As the 1860s arrived and through to the end of the war, it was a terrible time for Missouri pioneers. Father fought against son; son against father; brother against brother. Homes were looted and burned to the ground, livestock scattered and food was scarce. Women and children were not spared from the suffering either. Bloody skirmishes were fought near the future Excelsior Springs, two of which were fought by the infamous Quantrill’s Raiders against the Second Colorado Calvary in the first battle, and in the second battle, William “Bloody” Bill Anderson led a small group of bushwhackers that is said to include a young Jesse James, to an attack on local Union soldiers. To this day there are many descendants populating the area from not only the Union side, but the guerrillas and southern sympathizers as well. From that moment in 1804 when Meriwether Lewis and William Clark made camp at a small island somewhere near the mouth of the Fishing River, to present day, there is no end to the “history-in-the-making” that has taken place here in Excelsior Springs. Clay County was established on Jan. 2, 1822, and was a true pioneer wilderness – there weren’t any roads in 1822, land was mostly unclaimed and it seemed as if this area was a gateway to something bigger – the western plains of the United States. With land only $1.25 an acre at the time, many families left their more civilized homes and headed this way – looking for a fresh, new start. Most of the early pioneers of this area were from the southern states and were dirt poor. They dreamed of prosperity in this new, unclaimed territory and weren’t afraid of a little hard work. In 1821, a state road opened from Franklin, north of Boonville across the Missouri River and ran to Chouteau’s Landing, now present-day Kansas City. The river crossing was at Jack’s Landing in Lexington. The road continued on the north side of the river into Clay County along the steep ridges, south of what is present-day Excelsior Springs. At that time, there were only about 1,200 living in this area of Clay County, which extended about 2,000 square miles from the Missouri River all the way to the Iowa border. Indians were still living in the area north and west – it was wild, wooly and uncivilized. Nevertheless, the area began to thrive. In the summer of 1822, a two-story, 12-room tavern was opened by Louis and Nellie Seybold along the new road. The couple hoped to accommodate the many travelers now heading west. The Seybold Tavern was the first substantial structure in this area, and went through a number of owners, yet stood at that same location for 130 years until a fire consumed it in 1952. In fact, one owner of the Seybold Tavern for many years was John Harvey Ford, the uncle of Bob Ford (and his brother Charlie). Bob

Above: Travis Mellion, left, stands outside his cabin. It is believed that Mellion bathed his daughter, Opal, in Siloam Spring, resulting in her miraculous recovery from scrofula, prompting A.W. Wyman and Dr. J.V.B. Flack to have the water analyzed in St. Louis. Photo courtesy of the City of Excelsior Springs The years after the war were difficult for anyone who was a southern sympathizer and since this area of Missouri was heavily populated with those who emigrated here from the southern states, it was not easy to pick up the scattered pieces of their previous lives after the war. But if nothing else can be said about Missourians, they are a hardy lot. Life did go on and more settlers came to Missouri. It was here in Excelsior Springs, with its many wells that drew people into the lush valley of healing waters – the valley of vitality. Early on a “pizen” spring flowed into the Fishing River, turning its water a rusty color. The water was believed to be unpotable and was avoided. However in 1880, a local farmer named Travis Mellion turned to the water for his daughter who was afflicted with scrofula. Mellion bathed his daughter in the water and she was healed. Word of the healing spread and eventually, A.W. Wyman, owner of the spring, had samples of the water analyzed in St. Louis. The water was declared to have curative results. Wyman and local minister, Dr. J.V.B. Flack put their heads together and began developing the town of Viginti around the spring. By 1881, the town had 100 houses dotting the landscape. On Feb. 7, 1881, when the village officially had 250 inhabitants, it was renamed Excelsior Springs and the spring itself was renamed Siloam. Over time, more and more wells were discovered and in the end, over 46 wells and springs were located within a half mile radius of Siloam Spring. Thus began the marketing years of Excelsior Springs. Word spread around the world and for the next 80-plus years, Excelsior Springs would have thousands come to the city to partake of the healing waters in an assortment of ways from bathing to drinking. The town became recognized by its fancy pagodas denoting the location of the wells. Hotels sprang up, as did businesses, healing clinics, churches, boarding houses, restaurants, hotels and more. In 1888, the first Elms Hotel opened and shortly after, a 1,350-seat music hall. Unfortunately, the Elms would suffer through two fires, however, the landmark that currently stands near the downtown district of Excelsior Springs has welcomed thousands through its doors since it was last rebuilt in 1912. President Truman, Jack Dempsey, Al Capone and members of the New York Giants are just a few of the famous faces that are reputed to have stayed at The Elms. The hotel has recently undergone a large historical renovation and still welcomes visitors from around the world to partake of its spa and five-star facilities. In the 1930s, thanks to Roosevelt’s New Deal, a grant and loan were made available through the Public Works Administration and the city decided to build a facility that would bring a large group of the mineral waters under one roof. On May 27, 1936, the first cornerstone was laid for the Hall of Waters. Designed in the fabulous Art Deco design of the

1930s, the Hall of Waters has been a work of art for these 70-plus years since it opened. On Thursday, Oct. 7, 1937, the Hall of Waters opened its doors for the first time, offering visitors looking for vibrant health a place to go. Ten of the city’s mineral waters were dispensed at the Water Bar – a stunning Art Deco design that simply takes your breath away. It is also known as “The World’s Longest Water Bar.” The building housed a women’s hydrotherapy area and an indoor mineral water swimming pool, among other amenities. Despite some setbacks over the years, thanks to the ingenuity of its residents, the city has always pulled out its economic woes. Today, Excelsior Springs thrives once again. In the early 1920s, Lake Maurer was developed by brothers Jacob and John Maurer. The popular recreation area has had a long, rich history full of memories for those who frequently visited “spa town” to swim in the lake and enjoy the many activities. Lake Maurer still exists today and is privately owned as a retreat center by the Assembly of God Church. Sports has also played a prominent part in Excelsior Springs over the years. On Thanksgiving Day 1948, the first Mineral Water Bowl pitted the Excelsior Springs Tigers against the Mexico, Mo., team. The two teams played to a packed stadium and the Tigers won with a score of 48-18. While the Tigers played in the first three of the four high school MWB games, the competition became a small college game in 1954, attracting great teams to the city. Sponsored by the Excelsior Springs Quarterback Club, the Mineral Water Bowl remains one of Excelsior Springs’ biggest draws early in December. There are always plenty of activities planned throughout the year to keep the residents, as well as the visitors busy. There is something for everyone from the popular Second Friday Art Crawl in conjunction with Music Under the Stars, to Movies on the Lawn at The Elms, Waterfest, Gatsby Days, The Missouri Wine Festival, The Blues Garden, BBQ and Fly-In on the River, the Mineral Water Bowl and more! Excelsior Springs also offers beautifully cultivated walking trails, shopping, plenty of restaurants to choose from, several wineries, a lushly landscaped golf course and Christmas activities to keep every visitor occupied from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve. A number of historic sites such as the Hall of Waters, The Elms Hotel and Spa, the Excelsior Springs Museum and Archives, the Excelsior Springs Golf Course and Watkins Mills State Historic Site are just a few of those listed on local, county and national historic registers. And don’t forget, the Jesse James Farm and Museum is but a 20 minute drive away in the farmland area of Kearney. Excelsior Springs is still growing and making its own history. The citizens of this great community are committed to the success of the city – Nobody does it better.

In 2013, surveying began for a new water transmission line that will improve water pressure and service in some of the older parts of the community. The line, which will boost service in the downtown, eastern and northeastern sections of the city, will be accompanied by new storage facilities to replace some of the oldest water towers in Excelsior. to come on line later in 2013. The $13.5 million facility will be able to handle 3.5 million gallons of wastewater every day. Tying to the new wastewater plant will be new sewer lines built to serve three neighborhoods within the city limits that have relied on septic tanks in the past. Approximately 120 houses on Excelsior’s extreme north side, extreme south side and in a central-southern area will be able to finally hook onto the city’s infrastructure. CLAIMS TO FAME

THE RICH & FAMOUS ANN BROWN AL CAPONE SCOTT COX

O

ver the years, Excelsior Springs has seen many famous people come through the community. Some were just passing through; some stayed for a while—and some are still here. Politicians: 33rd President of the United States Harry Truman was a frequent visitor at The Elms and spent election night 1948 at the hotel; Pat Danner (D) – formerly represented the Missouri’s 6th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives; Bob Nance (R), Missouri House of Representatives, 36th District. Actors: Brenda Joyce, 1917-2009, (born in Excelsior Springs) – best known as portraying Jane opposite Johnny Weissmuller’s Tarzan; Michael Douglas, Joe Don Baker, Lee Purcell, Gary Sinise and Brandon Routh, who appeared in movies made in Excelsior Springs; Lyle Waggoner, lived in Excelsior Springs as a child, best known as a regular on the Carol Burnett Show and Wonder Woman; Holmes Osborne, best known from roles in “Donnie Darko,” “That Thing You Do,” “Anchorman” and dozens of TV roles, taught English here for a time in the late 1960s and early 1970s; Scott Cox, a 1995 Excelsior Springs High School graduate who earned “Best Play of 2010” honors from Pitch Weekly for his one-man performance of “Thom Pain: Based on Nothing.” Artists: Donald Judd is considered by many to be the father of minimalist art. A 2006 auction of about three dozen of his works at Christie’s in New York City raised about $20 million for the Judd Foundation. Chris Kurtz, a 1994 ESHS graduate, is today best known for his furniture and his bent-wood sculptures. He, his family and his work were featured in a recent article in

Martha Stewart Living. Kurtz’s parents, Carl and Lynda Kurtz, are also accomplished artists and still live in Excelsior Springs. Other locally-based artists who have works displayed in various galleries include husband and wife Keith and Roberta Hammer and well-known artist/author/ instructor Cathy Johnson. Some of the Hammers’ children also tend toward the arts: Ann Brown is a successful photographer, and Molly Hammer is well known as a singer in the Kansas City area. Howard Crabtree graduated from ESHS in 1973 and headed for New York City. He wrote several Off Broadway musicals and also spent time as a dancer and costume designer. He died in 1996. Athletes: Gregg Williams, was the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints (2010 Super Bowl XLIV Champions). Williams is former head coach of the Buffalo Bills and was defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans; Shaun Marcum was the pitcher/relief pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers; Jack Dempsey, used The Elms Hotel and Spa as a training camp; 1948 New York Giants, used The Elms as a summer training camp in 1948. Outlaws: Jesse and Frank James – were from Kearney and used the Excelsior Springs area as a hideout during their bank-robbing years. Frank James is remembered for his frequent visits to Excelsior Springs during its Mineral Water heydey –sitting down near the Fishing River and chatting with the townfolk. The brothers also rode with Quantrill’s Raiders and were involved in skirmishes in and around the Excelsior Springs area; Al Capone (gangster) reputed to have been a frequent visitor to The Elms Hotel and Spa – there is even a suite named after the infamous Capone.
