Im Sommer 2017 finden in Münster zum fünften Mal die Skulptur Projekte statt. Das internationale Ausstellungsformat im Außenraum, das im zehnjährigen Rhythmus realisiert wird, ist ein wichtiger Impulsgeber für die Gegenwartskunst. Von Klaus Bußmann und Kasper König 1977 initiiert, sind die Skulptur Projekte zu einer „Langzeitstudie“ im Spannungsfeld von Kunst und Öffentlichkeit geworden.

Ausgangspunkt und Veranstalter der Skulptur Projekte ist das LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur, Träger sind der Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) und die Stadt Münster.

Das Konzept der renommierten Ausstellung hat sich in den letzten Dekaden nicht wesentlich verändert: Internationale Künstlerinnen und Künstler werden vom kuratorischen Team eingeladen, die Beziehung von Kunst, öffentlichem Raum und urbanem Umfeld zu untersuchen und ortsspezifische neue Arbeiten zu entwickeln. Ausgewählte Projekte werden im Stadtraum realisiert und aktivieren historische, architektonische, soziale, politische und ästhetische Kontexte. Gleichzeitig weisen die Projekte

über den konkreten Ort hinaus: Themen unserer globalen Gegenwart und Reflexionen über zeitgenössische Begriffe von Skulptur fließen in die künstlerischen Auseinandersetzungen genauso ein wie ein Erforschen der Grundbedingungen von Öffentlichkeit und öffentlichem Raum. Insgesamt entstehen etwa 30 neue künstlerische Positionen zwischen Bildhauerei und performativer Kunst im Stadtraum. Die Ausstellung lädt vom 10. Juni bis zum 1. Oktober 2017 nach Münster ein. Der Eintritt ist frei. Künstlerischer Leiter der Skulptur Projekte ist Kasper König. Gemeinsam mit den Kuratorinnen Britta Peters, freie Ausstellungsmacherin aus Hamburg, und Marianne Wagner, Kuratorin für Gegenwartskunst am LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur, Münster, entsteht das Ausstellungskonzept zur fünften Ausgabe der Skulptur Projekte.

In the summer of 2017, Münster will be the venue of the Skulptur Projekte for the fifth time. Staged at ten-year intervals, the international outdoor exhibition format serves as an important catalyst to contemporary art. Initiated by Klaus Bußmann and Kasper König in 1977, the Skulptur Projekte have meanwhile become a “long-term study” between the poles of art and the public sphere.

Skulptur Projekte is a cooperative project of Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) and the city of Münster. The exhibition is being organized by the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur.

The concept of the renowned exhibition has remained essentially unchanged over the past decades: the curatorial team invites artists of many nationalities to explore the relationship between art, the public space, and the urban environment and develop new, site-specific works. Selected projects are realized in the urban setting and activate historical, architectural, social, political and aesthetic contexts. At the same time, the projects point beyond the specific place: themes related to the global

present and reflections on contemporary concepts of sculpture are as much an integral part of the artistic inquiries as investigation into the basic parameters of publicness and the public realm. A total of some thirty new artistic productions will cover the spectrum between sculpture and performative art in the urban space. From 10 June to 1 October 2017, the art event will attract visitors from all over the world. Admission is free. The artistic director of the Skulptur Projekte is Kasper König, who is working with Britta Peters, a free-lance curator based in Hamburg, and with Marianne Wagner, the curator of contemporary art at the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur, Münster, to develop the exhibition concept for the fifth edition of the Skulptur Projekte.
