Skorch interview

kobi jae Many know

Kobi Jae- Horror Kitsch Bitch, and if not you are missing out BIG TIME. This super sassy Australian blogger is one of the master minds behind the movement Alternative Curves (#alternativecurves) movement, and has used her blogging position as an outlet to stand up against major retail brands such as H&M when her post “Revolution of revulsion-H&M You Suck” went viral. Recently Kobi worked with Massachusetts based photographer Katie Mack. Together they created a charming yet dark ethereal manifestation. With horns placed high on Kobi red head, and an all-black ensemble it sparked something with us at SKORCH“What else does this magical creature (Kobi Jae) have to offer, and what’s her source of inspiration?” so we decided to ask her! You’ll be surprised to learn what you didn’t know about Kobi Jae!

Skorch interview

7 Vol.9 Issue 6 december 2015 | SKORCHMAG.COM |

Who is Kobi Jae?

Hold on let me ask her-*whispers* “OK!” She says she’s a total fruit-loop, weirdo who worships fashion, and holding her finger up to certain constraints of society by wearing whatever the heck she wants to! (Now in first person) Like a lot of people, for the majority of my life I felt so restricted by my body, and all the immense feelings of hatred I had towards it. Although fashion and costume has always been a huge love of mine I never thought I was allowed, or able to indulge that. So finding the ‘body pos’ community a few years back literally changed my life, and now I just adore giving myself the freedom to explore my style and express my creativity by decorating my body in various ways. I’m a model, alternative style blogger, as well as graphic and web designer, special effects technician, disability support worker, actor/ singer/performer and (up to a couple of years ago) A Jill of many trades!

I used to be a goth...

How would you best describe your fashion sense to someone?

I’ve actually never been able to do this! Possibly because it’s always changing-I used to be a goth kitsch kid with a serious love of all things black and obscure, and although I still feel that way in my heart of hearts I have evolved, and grown to appreciate so much more. I guess, my ideal way of seeing myself is; Fran Fine meets Lucille Ball with a healthy dose of Wednesday Addams after she’s been on a school excursion to Harajuku. But really, it just depends on the day...

What was the inspiration for this shoot?

I was researching Boston based photographers and came across Katie Mack! I fell in love with Macks ethereal, and cinematic style. She photographs a lot in the forest/woodsy areas, and I think that infiltrated my subconscious. I found myself wanting to do a mythical fantasy wood creature shoot. Soon I was on the internet looking up demon horns- the next thing I know I was collecting a pair out of my mailbox, and gluing fall-colored flowers and leaves to them!

Do you feel there is a need for this style of editorial shoots?/ -Where do you feel there is an audience for this style shoot?

Yes, absolutely! In fact, I keep trying to push for it because I think it’s something that’s fairly underrepresented. The plus fashion industry, and media takes itself a bit too seriously, and that’s probably because we’ve been fighting so hard for so long to just be taken seriously. So yes I think fashion should be allowed to be fun, creative, and I would LOVE to see more artistic freedom in plus editorials. I may have horns on, but I also have some really killer fashion on, too. Y’know? While i’m not exactly sure of the demographic, but I definitely feel it’s an “if you build it, they will come” scenario. We don’t have a lot of visible, quirky stuff being represented in the plus arena at the moment, but there is definitely a high level of appreciation: my blog and social media networks constantly reinforce that

What are your goals for the future with this specific style of editorials?

I don’t have any specific goals-I just want to keep making art, and representing people who can relate to me, and what I do. You can’t whine about not being represented if you’re not going to stand up and do it yourself! I’m here for all the apple shaped folks, with tattoos, piercings, who like b-grade movies, and sometimes dressing a bit trashy. There are many indie designers that I absolutely LOVE, but still something is missing for my personal tastes. I’m just going to do it myself! At the end of next year i’m planning to launch my own plus size collection! But shh, don’t tell anyone! Photo by Katie Mack and Dress by Smart Glamour

Growing up, all my best friends had smaller frames and comparison led to me not loving myself as I was. I slowly began to realize that it wasn’t the size that mattered, but one’s confidence. People weren’t going to love me more or accept me more if I was a size 0, all that mattered was that I was myself and

Ashley, congratulations! You won season 14 of Project Runway. You’re the first plus size designer to win and to have plus woman walk the runway during NYFW. This is a win for you but it also felt like a win for a plus size community, how has the response been? Thank you! The response has been positive. It’s nice to see how much the mainstream fashion community has been so accepting of it. Popular publications are now following me and it’s very exciting to see that folks finally want to make plus size mainstream. We’ve admired your aesthetic and talent here at Skorch for years, what can we expect from your upcoming collection? Just expect that I’m turning this industry around making clothing that we’ve been wanting and needing. Also, it’ll be a reflection of garments that I’d wear, that I know other plus-sized woman would wear too!

If you could only give one piece of advice to an up and coming plus size designer, what would it be? It would be to stay strong, follow your dreams, trust your vision, and don’t give up. Generic answer, however it’s the honest to God truth! Since I’m sure you’re a busy woman constantly on the go, can you tell us what you carry in your bag? I usually have my planner, notebook for sketching & notes, 5 different shades of lipstick, business cards, laptop, and chocolate chocolate. Your hair color was your signature on the show and I’m sure it helps fans recognize you in public, will you be keeping the purple longterm or are you thinking of changing it up? The purple is definitely permanent. Time to time I think about changing it up, I mean, I’ve done many colors over the years. However if and when I do change, it’ll likely still be in the pastel color family.
