An Abundance of Artistic Riches
›› For a small town, Steamboat Springs offers a dizzying amount of creative talent. From contemporary bronze sculptures and Western headwear to monotype prints and award-wining oils, the array of media is vast. More than a dozen galleries and museums showcase the depth of talent within the Yampa Valley, through a constant rotation of visual exhibits.
First Friday Artwalk, as the name suggests, is a monthly event staged by the downtown galleries to view the latest works by prominent artists. The leisurely vibe is enhanced with live music, wine, amuse bouche and a chance to meet the artists.
Steamboat is honored to host the Oil Painters of America annual exhibition, convention and wet paint competition in 2022. A juried event, the exhibit features approximately 250 works from the best representational oil painters in North America. The total national awards are approximately $100,000 in cash and merchandise, including a $25,000 Best in Show award. Master Signature OPA member Johanna Harmon will be the juror.

"Zion Bighorn Sheep," oil on canvas, 20 x 24, by Kyle Ma, Signature Member, Oil Painters of America. Gold medal winner at the 2021 National Juried Exhibit.

Four years ago, when the OPA held its annual convention in Steamboat, journalists, art afficionados and artists from around the world came to see the exhibit and to participate in its related workshops, seminars and celebrations. The 2022 exhibit may well top the 2018 response.
The OPA exhibit and convention changes venue annually, so this encore event in Steamboat Springs is especially noteworthy. “Our mission is to promote representational art throughout the country,” says OPA Executive Director Kathryn Beligratis. “It’s always fun, letting communities see an exhibit of this caliber.”
Convention activities begin on Tuesday, May 31, with the Wet Paint Competition, and conclude on Sunday, June 5. The opening reception for artists, collectors, the public and press is slated for Friday, June 3, 5-8 p.m., with the awards presentation taking place at 8:30 p.m.
