Welcome to the high mountain valley of Routt County, a place that is not only naturally beautiful but houses an authentic community that is full of creative opportunities. Even in the midst of a pandemic, creative people in our area are finding outside-the-box solutions to sharing their talents. Whether it be poets, performers, designers, filmmakers or visual artists – this is a time of innovation. You can access and find arts and culture activities throughout all of the seasons of Steamboat Springs. New versions of your favorite events include pop-up drive-in theaters, appropriately distanced performances in Kim Keith the Botanic Park, online classes, well managed craft markets and children’s programs that take place in the vast outdoors. Why are the arts so important? Art expresses the inexpressible. It helps us experience what it is to be human. Arts can be a vehicle to teach challenging subjects, to communicate complex ideas, to provide a safe forum to explore thoughts and grow as a person. The integration of the arts into the way we teach and live reminds us that the arts are not a luxury. They are essential. The connection between arts, community and economy is and should be front-of-mind as community leaders work towards economic and civic recovery. Accessing arts and culture as a learning and teaching tool is a foundational way to help us cope with life as we know it and help us evolve our lives to make them even more enjoyable. Arts and culture activities: • bring communities together • promote tolerance • provide opportunities to see beyond ourselves • give us a unique voice • are places for celebration, joy and sometimes, solace. One day soon we will be on the other side of this pandemic. As we consider that beautiful day in the not so distant future, let us imagine the many ways we can utilize arts experiences to jump start the economy and unite our communities. The arts will be a critical part of our growth as a town, as a state and as a nation. Arts get us out of our homes, into the community spending money and enjoying one another. Arts enable a reconnecting through shared experience in public spaces. Arts will become even more critical as we operate in a more unified way. The arts aren’t just fun – they are necessary. In what ways has your creative approach changed during COVID? I think that I've probably been more inspired creatively this year than any year of my life. There are many factors that contribute to that, but it probably has a lot to do with the fact

What is your favorite thing about being a musician? It's always been the creating of new songs – something that wasn't there before, now is. That, and working out the arrangement and building something out of nothing.

that I have a lot more time on my hands now that I'm not playing as many shows. I was able to complete my solo album which will be out in a couple of weeks and I've written a ton of new songs. The shows have gone away but I think I've been playing and creating more than usual.

Times have been tough in Craig this past year – even when looking past the obvious challenges of COVID-19. “Craig itself has been trying to figure out what the future will look like, especially with the power plant closing,” says Paul Knowles, assistant director at the Museum of Northwest Colorado in Craig. “We wanted to do something that would really put us on the map.” In a city historically 16 • Volume 14, Edition 2, 2021

defined by its involvement in politics and the coal industry, the museum aimed to do something completely different: commission a massive watercolor painting to be hung on the back wall of the museum's main room.
Before contacting an artist, Knowles researched extensively to determine if a watercolor of the size he was imagining would even be possible. “The Smithsonian said the largest watercolor on record was 15-feet-by8-feet, so I quickly ran out and measured our space and it was 16-feet-by-10-feet,” he says. No Guinness record existed for largest watercolor, but that was perfectly fine with Knowles. “I could have petitioned Guinness to create this record, but once it becomes a record it becomes a target,” he explains. “It gave us exactly what we needed without losing focus on the painting itself.” Knowles had just the artist in mind for the project. “I really decided if this would be for the community, it should be by the community,” Knowles says. With that in mind, he selected Israel Holloway, a painter who grew up in Northwest Colorado. “I ran the project by him and he was ecstatic,” Knowles says. Knowles and Holloway worked together to select the perfect subject for the Northwest Colorado theme. At Holloway’s suggestion, the pair chose 29-year-old Clint Chew, a member of a long-time ranching family in the Craig area who continues to raise cattle, sheep and horses on the family ranch. “Israel could not have found a better person,” Knowles says. The image would be of Chew riding his horse, Arrow, across the Yampa River. “This piece had to be something that complemented the museum’s incredible collection and celebrated the local cowboy heritage,” Holloway says. “In a current sense, I wanted it to represent the local people and the subtle rewards that come with hard work and a hard climate here in the valley. Susan Schiesser: Remembering an Iconic Steamboat Springs Artist
Fearless. Vibrant. Unpredictable. Amusing. Colorful. The adjectives people use to describe Susan Schiesser are telling: the artist could not be summarized in simple terms. Following her death from cancer last October in Kauai, Hawaii, the Steamboat Springs art community was devastated. Schiesser's entrée into the local art scene came in 1999 through the Steamboat Springs Art Council’s Small Works Gallery. She went on to run three local galleries, mentor and help several upand-coming artists and win the Mango Princess Award for "Best of Show" from the Kauai Society of Artists. Her work has been featured in galleries across the United States as well as in Switzerland and Germany. Many things inspired Schiesser’s art, but a common theme was her love of water. One such example was the piece “Moose Drool,” which appeared on the cover of Volume 13, Edition 1 of the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide. Schiesser’s graphic design background inspired this dynamic and impressionistic piece. “I wanted the moose to really stand out,” she said in an interview. “I wanted it to be bold and attentiongrabbing.” Schiesser would often use vibrant color in her art, filtering real memories and events through the lens of a surrealist, dreamlike art style. In her personal life, Schiesser was a well-known local, participating in yoga, dance, skiing and skeet shooting, as well as spending time with her dogs. “Susan’s loss will be profoundly felt in Steamboat Springs. She not only had a generous spirit and a quirky sense of humor, but she also had enormous talent,” says Deborah Olsen, publisher of Ski Town Media, Inc. “Over the years, she was always an eager contributor to the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide.
