Welcome to Steamboat Springs

W

e’re glad you chose our Western town to make winter memories. Whether you’re a snow sport enthusiast or a first-timer to the snow, we know you’ll find Steamboat Springs to be a true winter wonderland. Since the early 1900s, people here have embraced the colder months by enjoying our light and fluffy snow, and we’re happy to have you carry on the tradition. When you’re not mountainside, take some time to enjoy Steamboat’s historic downtown. Strolling along the main street, Lincoln Avenue, you’ll pass a wide variety of local businesses, owned and operated by our neighbors and friends. Steamboat has a robust arts and culture scene with galleries featuring local and national artists, special exhibits, and shows happening nearly every weekend. You’ll find plenty of recommendations on the following pages should you need help picking and choosing. In Steamboat, we pride ourselves on embracing the future while preserving our past. Our Western heritage is what makes us special, and we hope to share it with generations to come. Help us celebrate this by learning about our roots VG 2 | ONLINE AT WWW.STEAMBOATCHAMBER.COM

at one of the many museums, and savor your meals with Western hospitality at heart. Many people love Steamboat for being a world-class ski destination, but our locals love it for so much more than that. It’s home to generations of ranchers and athletes, a launching pad for eager college students and a dream-come-true for others. It’s the mom-and-pop ski shop that has been around for years, the server who treats you like family and a tight-knit community that works hard to be here. This is why, when you’re out and about, we encourage you to practice kindness toward the people and natural environments. After all, it’s kindness that floats the ‘Boat! From all of us at The Steamboat Springs Chamber, enjoy your visit and have fun in the snow.

ide the longest and fastest gondola in North America at the Steamboat Ski Area this winter, as the resort enters the final phase of its multi-year, $200 million-plus renovation project. The Wild Blue Gondola takes skiers and riders through a mid-station adjacent to Bashor Bowl on their way to the top of Sunshine Peak, going from the ski area base to the summit in just 13 minutes. Wild Blue is one of the most transformational pieces of the entire “Full Steam Ahead” renovation project, easing congestion at the Steamboat Gondola, changing the traffic flow and opening the mountain to beginner and advanced skiers and riders. Enhanced snowmaking on the runs around Sunshine Peak ensure that the most popular terrain is open by the peak holiday season. Also new this winter is Mahogany Ridge, 650 additional acres of advanced/ expert terrain that will make Steamboat the second largest ski resort in Colorado. Beware: the terrain in the Mahogany Ridge area is technical with lots of steep chutes and gladed, natural terrain. Ignoring the ski area boundaries in this area could be life-threatening; rescue will be costly. When you’re ready for a break, the new Range Food & Drink Hall is open in Gondola Square. Grab a seat by one of the fire pits to warm up with a drink from the bar or order lunch for the whole family from a variety of vendors offering sandwiches, ramen and tacos. One thing that hasn’t changed: Steamboat’s famous Champagne Powder®. We’ll see you out there.

Thanks to the addition of three tower-mounted snow guns, Howelsen Hill is set to have plenty of snow regardless of early-season weather. “They’re the newest, most efficient guns on the market and they specialize in making snow in marginal temps,” says Brad Setter, Howelsen Hill’s manager. “So, we’re really excited about that.” For downhill skiing enthusiasts, Howelsen Hill offers a variety of slopes that cater to all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. The ski area is also home to the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and its training programs, which have been shaping young athletes into elite winter sports stars for generations. Family fun is a focal point this season with the continuation of the highly successful Tube Howelsen operation, supported by a covered magic carpet lift adorned with LED lights for nighttime rides. And make sure to stop by Howelsen Hill for Ski Free Sundays. It’s as easy as stopping by the ticket office to pick up a free lift ticket, allowing access to the lifts and Nordic trails. lthough Steamboat Springs is known for its sprawling ski mountain, which serves as a snowy backdrop, abundant possibilities for outdoor adventure beyond Alpine skiing await. Snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing allow visitors to explore the snow-packed backcountry of Routt County. One of the most scenic locations for cross-country skiing is Haymaker Nordic Center, which boasts rolling trails on top of the golf course. Snowmobiling tours are led by numerous companies, including Steamboat Snowmobile and Lucky 8 Ranch. Ski Haus, located on East U.S. 40, is a great place to rent snowshoe and Nordic ski equipment. For a day of fun with the whole family, try winter horseback riding or a dog sledding tour in rural Routt County.

At Saddleback Ranch, visitors can enjoy a two-hour horseback ride around the ranchland. The rides are available for anyone age eight or older. For an out-of-the-ordinary experience, Grizzle-T Dog and Sled Works offers a two-hour dog sled ride. The company provides shuttle service from Steamboat and there’s even extra time at the end of the tour to hang with the pups. Warm weather enthusiasts can add a winter twist to their favorite activities with fat biking or ice fishing. Steamboat Flyfisher offers half-day ice fishing trips while Steamboat Ski and Bike Kare has a wide selection of fat tires and other winter-ready bikes available for purchase and rental. Whatever your winter sport is, we’ll see you out there.

P

erhaps it’s the soft golden light or the vibrancy of a college town. Perhaps its Routt County’s rich history or its lively gallery scene. They all come together to create an artistic spirit that flows as strongly through the Yampa Valley as does its freeflowing river. Steamboat Springs’ creative essence infuses everything from Western art to whiskey. Those in search of bears, buffalo and bull moose will find plentiful examples of Western art. Start at Steamboat Art Museum, which hosts “Wild West: Wildlife Masters Past and Present” this winter, then go across the street to Wildhorse Gallery to find iconic examples of this timeless style. Step beyond the traditional to find yourself surrounded by an astoundingly diverse world of art. Contemporary artists work in fused glass and metal, oils and graphite, paper-on-edge and custom printmaking, fine-art photography and jewels – to name a few of their favorite mediums. Others make less conventional choices: ice sculptures adorn the streets of Old Town during Winter Carnival. Locals strap on snowshoes to create landscape-scale snow drawings, while the distillers create handcrafted whiskey at Mythology. Hot air creates its own art at the January Balloon Glow.

Welcoming

Sierra Ferrell is one of four headliners at the WinterWonderGrass festival in March.

Music sets the tone for ski season, from banjo-player Béla Fleck at Strings Music Festival in November to the Infamous Stringdusters at WinterWonderGrass in March. Only in Steamboat would people party on the pavement in the middle of winter! And how could music exist without dance? Reserve seats early for Steamboat Dance Theatre’s annual concert, which showcases the vibrant world of dance, an artform as old as the town itself. Public art is everywhere. Steamboat Springs native Sage Sullivan won a nationwide talent search to create the new work that greets skiers as they arrive at the resort this winter. Even the Old Town alleyways are decked in colorful murals. Take a stroll through downtown on the first Friday of any month: sip wine, sample hors d’oeuvres and surround yourself with art at local galleries and other venues. Steamboat’s edible – and drinkable – art is delectable. Mythology recently opened its award-winning distillery on the west side of town just in time for ski season. Not to mention, of course, the breweries: so many so that a pub tour could well be in order! Complementing Steamboat’s pub scene are its diverse culinary offerings, which include masterpieces created by chef Hannah Hopkins of James Beard fame; she oversees the menu at Besamé on Lincoln Avenue, as well as the nearby Mambo Italiano and Yampa Valley Kitchen. Then there’s Backdoor Grill, where you’ll find the “Best Burger in Colorado,” according to Trip Advisor. If art is life, Steamboat Springs is living well.

f you’re ready for a post-skiing soak, consider a visit to the Old Town Hot Springs. The complex is built around the “Heart Spring,” and is now one of Steamboat Springs’ main downtown activities, including a fitness center, childcare center, climbing wall, community room, water slides, hot tubs and soaking pools fed by water from the springs. Old Town Hot Springs is open every day of the year, except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Hours are 6 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m.-9 p.m. weekends (the pools close at 8:45 each night). Lockers on the lower level are free to use, and while glass and alcohol is prohibited, coolers – including outside food and nonalcoholic drinks – are allowed. The lap pool and kiddie areas are currently undergoing reconstruction, but the water slides, hot tubs, main pool and hot springs remain open. For more information, visit www.oldtownhotsprings.org. If you are traveling north to the Strawberry Park Hot Springs, keep in mind that the road is not regularly plowed between November 1 and May 1, so vehicles must be fourwheel-drive or have snow tires/chains. RVs and trailers are not permitted. Fines are stiff for those who block the road. Consider taking a shuttle, which can be reserved at www.strawberryparkhotsprings.com.

If you’re craving pizza, head to Slopeside Grill at the base of the mountain between 3-6 p.m. to enjoy a one-topping pizza and a drink from the bar for less than $20. Add Table 79 to your list of stops downtown for “The Burger,” best served with the addition of pimento cheese. Snack on crispy Brussels sprouts and sip a cocktail during happy hour from 4:30-6 p.m. Stop by Laundry Kitchen & Cocktails for the blistered shishito peppers or a meat-and-cheese board, complete with house-made pickled vegetables. Bonus: the happy hour includes wine-by-the-time from 4:30-5:30 p.m. during which time glasses of wine are priced based on the time. Order an 8-ounce steakburger, shrimp skewer, stuffed mushrooms and more during happy hour at 8th Street Steakhouse. Take the whole family to Back Door Grill, where you’ll find burgers, wings and a full menu of options. Make sure you bring a dollar bill with you to hang on the wall. Cross-Country Ski & Snowshoe Routes ■ 1A West Summit Loop A

3.7 miles (loop from trailhead)

Access: Travel east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 approximately 13 miles to the West Summit parking area on Rabbit Ears Pass. Route description: Begin on the north side of the road. Skiing the route in a clockwise direction is less difficult, with gentler climbs and steeper descents through open and wooded areas. Views of the Yampa Valley and the Flat Tops are spectacular. The West Summit loops and surrounding terrain are the most popular skiing areas in the Hahn’s Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District.

◆ 1B West Summit Loop B

3.6 miles/5.4 miles (loop from trailhead)

Access: This route is reached by skiing counter-clockwise on 1A. Ski past the first junction with 1B and climb to the top of the ridge. At the second junction, on the ridgetop, ski 1B to the east. This route is best skied in a clockwise direction. Route description: This route has several steep ascents and descents through heavy timber and open meadows.

◆ 1C South Summit Loop

3 miles

Access: This route begins at the West Summit parking area. Park on the south side of the highway. Route description: Travel counter-clockwise for the best downhill runs. The route begins by following an old road. Woods, open meadows and some steep descents are encountered. This route connects with route 3B midway around the loop. Past this junction, the route follows the telephone lines and old highway, paralleling U.S. 40. The final portion follows the meadow edge back to the West Summit, then retraces the first segment of old road. ■ 1D Bruce’s Trail

3.1 miles

Access: Travel east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 approximately 14 miles to the parking area on the north side of the highway. A short spur connects the parking lot to the main trail. Route description: Designed wide to accommodate both skating and traditional skiing techniques. The trail is machine-groomed in the early ski season. Note that dogs are not permitted when the trail is groomed. The upper loop provides easy skiing, while the lower loop has a moderate difficulty rating. The tight loop design and proximity to the highway make this trail a good choice for a ski workout, a short day, or for skiers wishing to remain relatively close to their vehicles.

◆◆ 2A Hogan Park Route

13 miles round trip

Access: Travel east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 approximately 18 miles to the Walton Creek parking area. One way, 6.5 miles to the bottom of Morningside Lift. Route description: This route is recommended for experts only. If you plan to descend Mount Werner through the Steamboat Ski Area, safety straps are required. Begin on the north side of the highway just west of the large cut bank. The route crosses large open meadows and many streams. Steep ascents and descents will be encountered. During heavy snowfall or whiteout conditions, the route is very difficult to follow across the large meadows. Carry emergency/ survival gear. If Morningside Lift is not operating, climb 1 mile to top of lift, then descend 3 miles to ski area base. ■ 2B Fox Curve Loop

3.6 miles

Access: Travel approximately 17 miles east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 to the Fox Curve parking area. The parking area is on the north side of highway. Route description: This route has varied terrain including steep ascents and descents. Use caution when crossing Walton Creek.

◆ 3A Walton Creek Loop

1.9 miles

Access: Travel east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 approximately 18 miles to the Walton Creek parking area on Rabbit Ears Pass. The parking area is on the south side of the highway. Route description: Begin at the knoll south of the parking lot and follow the powerline a short distance to the west. Turn south across Walton Creek and through former Walton Creek Campground. The junction of route 3B is reached in the meadow south of the campground. Past this junction, the route makes a steep ascent over a ridge and down an open slope to Walton Creek and the junction of route 3C. Follow Walton Creek back to the parking area.

◆◆ 3B Par-A-Lell Route

3B route is 2.3 miles (or 4.2 miles for combined one-way from 1A to 3A)

Access: This route can be accessed from route 1C, beginning at the West Summit parking area on the south side of the highway, or from route 3A, beginning at the Walton Creek parking area. Route description: This route connects routes 1C and 3A. Skiing it west to east provides more exciting downhill runs; skiing east to west involves more climbing, though much of it is gentle. Starting at the junction of 1C and 3B (west end), the route goes up a gentle slope and drops into a stream valley. Use caution when crossing streams and beaver ponds on this route as they may be only partially frozen. Heavy timber and open meadows. ■ 3C North Walton Peak Route

3.25 miles (one-way)/6.5 miles (loop from trailhead)

Access: Travel east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 approximately 18 miles to the Walton Creek parking area. Route description: This is the most popular route for telemarking. Begin at the knoll to the south of the parking area and head southeast and downhill through the trees following route 3A. Approximately 1/2 mile from the parking area is the junction of 3A and 3C. The route crosses Walton Creek and travels through wooded areas and open meadows. It connects to Forest Road 302 and follows it to the top of North Walton Peak. Opportunities for steep runs exist on the slopes of this peak. Level of Difficulty Key:

Backcountry Information Cross-Country Ski General Information 1. Park only in designated areas. These are identified by large trailhead parking signs. 2. Skiing is recommended in areas north and south of U.S. 40 from the West Summit east to Walton Creek. 3. Ski routes are marked with blue diamonds on trees. Bamboo poles are used to mark the trail route through open areas when snow depth permits. After heavy snowfalls, the posts and poles may be covered with snow and not visible. 4. Routes are not groomed and have sections of steep ascent and descent. Skiers should have the skills to handle varied terrain and snow conditions before attempting these routes. The exception is Bruce’s Trail, which is occasionally groomed in early ski season. 5. Dogs’ feet may damage ski tracks. Dog droppings should be removed from the trail. Dogs are not allowed on Bruce’s Trail in the early season when it is groomed.

Snowshoe General Information Snowshoers are welcome to use the marked cross-country ski routes on Rabbit Ears Pass, but they should travel parallel to the ski tracks, not on them. Snowshoes damage ski tracks. Recommended routes for snowshoeing are Walton Peak Loop and Bruce’s Trail. Smaller loops for snowshoers may be available. Contact the USFS for details: 970-879-2299.

These areas are marked on trailhead maps and on the ground. These areas are closed to motorized users. Violations are punishable. There is a suggested non-motorized area on the northwest side of Hahns Peak (see map at 550 Trailhead. The 550 trailhead is west of the map in the Visitors’ Guide).

F STEAMBOAT SPRINGS VISITORS’ GUIDE | SKI SEASON 2023-24 | VG 63

REASONS TO RETURN FOR SUMMER

PICTURE YOURSELF... descending a single track. Photo NED CREMIN

Matt Geraci rides in Steamboat Bike Park, which offers 2,200 vertical feet of downhill trails.

• Enjoy vibrant wildflowers and grand mountain vistas on a day hike on Mount Werner.

• Play a friendly game of golf or practice your swing on the lush, rolling greens at Haymaker Golf Course.

• Float past the grassy, tree-lined banks of the Yampa River on a relaxing tube ride.

• Cast into the crystal-clear waters of the Yampa River on a guided fishing trip and reel in a rainbow trout.

• Explore handmade art inspired by the beauty of the West at Art in the Park in July.

• Browse books, candy and cowboy boots at the colorful shops of downtown Steamboat while enjoying the low humidity of the Rocky Mountains.

• Soak up the sun and watch the kids splash, swim and race down the water slides at Old Town Hot Springs. • Toast the end of the day at the top of the gondola while dancing to live music during Sunset Happy Hour. VG 64 | ONLINE AT WWW.STEAMBOATCHAMBER.COM

• Mountain bike single tracks, ride gravel country roads or enjoy a family ride on the Yampa River Core Trail.
