Romantic Proposal Settings in Steamboat Springs Popping the big question is almost as important as the wedding day itself. Whether you are looking for an epic mountain backdrop or an intimate dinner, these romantic settings are perfect for your Steamboat proposal. Fish Creek Falls This 280-foot waterfall is one of the most popular destinations in Steamboat Springs. Offering breathtaking views after just a ¼-mile hike, Fish Creek Falls is the perfect location for abundant scenery year-round. Strawberry Park Hot Springs Tucked in the mountains just 20 minutes from town are natural hot springs with beautiful views. Relax in the springs, spend the night in a rustic cabin and pop the question while in a high-country oasis.

The Lakes of North Routt Ask the big question while surrounded by natural beauty at one of North Routt County’s lakes. Steamboat Lake, Pearl Lake and Hahns Peak Lake offer remarkable Rocky Mountain views and incredible scenery that’s accessible year-round.

LINDA HUNTER

Western Barns Nothing quite captures the Western lifestyle more than Steamboat’s iconic barns. Both the More and Arnold barns offer picturesque views of Mount Werner for your memorable moment.

Hot Air Balloon Rodeo, Bald Eagle Lake What’s a better backdrop than 20+ hot air balloons soaring overhead? Held in July, the iconic Hot Air Balloon Rodeo would be a quintessential summer proposal in Steamboat. Flash of Gold, Buffalo Pass Bask in the autumn scenery while hiking or biking on Buffalo Pass. Weave through beautiful alpine meadows and bright aspen groves on the Flash of Gold Trail. Living up to its name with bright foliage in the fall, this trail is a perfect location to propose.

Walton Peak Rabbit Ears Pass Pop the question in pristine powder at Walton Peak. Ask the locals how to get to this hidden area alongside U.S. 40. Walton Peak is a peaceful, secluded spot to get down on one knee. 14 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2022

Picnic on Broadway, Steamboat Ski Area Hit the slopes with your significant other and make it a day to remember at the Steamboat Ski Area. Pack a lunch and stop at the picnic table off Broadway Run – an easy green run with panoramic views of the Yampa Valley.

A July proposal can be timed to coincide with an early morning sunrise and a sky full of colorful hot air balloons.

Hahns Peak Lake is a beautiful setting for a proposal after hiking, paddleboarding or picnicking along the shore.

Wedding story

Kelsey Mueller & Casey Roach Saturday, September 25, 2021 Cali Frankovic Photography www.CaliFrankovic.com

Gorgeous weather and stunning, vibrant fall colors added to the organic, rustic charm of Steamboat Springs locals Kelsey Mueller and Casey Roach’s wedding day. Western Welcome The couple threw a warm Westernthemed welcome dinner for guests arriving early to town for their wedding weekend. Dressed in Western attire and custom-made hats from Steamboat Hatter, Casey and Kelsey brought in local caterer Routt Wild Harvest for a sustainable menu designed specifically from Routt County farms.

Flowers Wild Hare Floral Co. brought to life Kelsey's vision of dried, recycled bouquets and floral arrangements. A mixture of fresh blooms and dried flowers was used to complement the pastel color palette. Coordinating with One Fine Day Productions to create the stunning, triangular arch, the couple added flower statements for an extra boho touch.

Rehearsal Dinner The wedding party gathered the night before at the loft banquet room in the historic Ore House at the Pine Grove Restaurant for an intimate rehearsal dinner. Adding to the wedding’s Western theme, the space – once a hay loft – offers a full-service bar, dance floor and private bathrooms.

Attire Kelsey wore a bohemian lace gown with a one-of-a-kind cape veil from designer Beloved Unconditionally Yours by Casablanca Bridal. “I had a vision of what I wanted, but I made sure to try on options that were completely different styles,” she says. Dried flower crowns and pastel bridesmaids’ dresses added subtle color on the already-vibrant day. Casey complemented the eclectic look with a slate gray Enzo-designed suit from Allen’s, dress shoes from Steamboat Shoe Company and cufflinks passed down from his grandfather for a personal touch. Groomsmen looked sleek and neutral in light gray suits and silver ties.

Ceremony Kelsey and Casey tied the knot at the Steamboat Ski Area’s Thunderhead Lawn, which provided panoramic views of the valley for the perfect mountaintop wedding. With the help of planning by Steamboat Resort’s Rachel Radetsky and day-of coordinator Jess Feinerman of JC Productions, the couple said their vows with a view of fall colors across the Steamboat landscape.

Reception Kelsey and Casey’s love of music played a significant role in their choice of a www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 19

reception venue. Having frequented Strings Music Festival many times for live music events, the couple chose to have their reception at the world-renowned music venue. A traditional, sit-down dinner fully catered by Steamboat Meat & Seafood began the night, and local band Buffalo Commons – who are also close friends with the couple – performed for an unforgettable night of live music and dancing. Dessert The couple sweetened the night with an arrangement of goodies at the dessert table. Offering options for every type of sweet tooth, the focal point of the delicacies was the beautiful three-tiered mountain landscape wedding cake designed by Sweet Dreams Steamboat. Live Wedding Painting Kelsey and Casey wanted a piece of their wedding night to have with them forever, so they hired local artist Carol Jean to capture the highlights of their wedding night with an easel and a paintbrush. Incorporating the core elements of their wedding – fall colors, Mount Werner, music and dancing – the beautiful art piece now hangs in the home of the newlyweds.

Do's and Don’ts of Dress Shopping Get the most out of your wedding dress shopping experience

RACHEL MILLER

One of the most exciting elements of the wedding planning process is dress shopping for the big day. Whether you’ve done your research and know your style or are keeping an open mind, there are a few things you should know before stepping into your first bridal boutique.

Creative signs add a fun twist to the dress-selection process.

Do make an appointment Some boutiques allow for walk-ins, but most bridal shops are by appointment only. Making an appointment ensures you’ll have a consultant to help fit you and find the style you’re looking for.

Do have a budget Don’t let the price tags scare you – there is a dress for every budget. Letting your consultant know your budget from the beginning helps you find your dream dress quicker.

Do bring people you trust Having those closest to you there for honest input can help the decision process.

Don’t try on dresses you can’t afford There’s no sense in falling in love with a wedding gown you can’t afford. Set your standards and be realistic about your budget.

Don’t bring an entourage Bringing too many people can lead to stress and frustration. The more people, the more opinions. 24 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2022

Do wear comfortable undergarments You’ll be trying on a lot of dresses, which means you’ll be in your underwear

quite a while, so wear comfortable undergarments to eliminate underlines and help ease the fitting process. Don’t wear a lot of makeup Wedding dresses are expensive – and white. Wear minimal makeup so you don’t make the mistake of smudging makeup on a pricey wedding gown and having to pay for it later. Do try on all styles A-lines, ball gowns, strapless and fit-and-flares – keeping an open mind to various styles can lead to surprises. Don’t knock it until you try it You may enter your appointment set on a specific style. The only way you’ll know if you like something – or don’t – is if you try it on. Do the accessories Found a dress you really like but it’s missing something? Add a glittery gemstone belt to bring definition to

your waist. Put on a floor-length veil and dangly earrings for the full bridal effect. Don’t overload yourself Try on as many gowns as you can, but don’t overdo it. Two appointments should be your max in one day. Try narrowing it down to one or two dresses at each stop. Do take pictures Pictures always look different than what you’re seeing in the mirror. Take tons of pictures of yourself in the gowns to make sure the dress looks the way you want – from every angle. Don’t feel pressured to say yes to the dress Don’t feel obligated to pick a dress the day-of. Remember: you want to be comfortable doing every activity on your wedding day. Take a lot of pictures, revisit them later and just focus on having fun in the moment.

When planning for the big day, many don’t think about the effect weddings have on the environment. Reduce your wedding-day carbon footprint and throw a sustainable celebration with these six simple ideas. 26 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2022

4 1. Go Paperless Minimize waste by nixing traditional wedding stationery and opting for digital save-thedates and wedding invitations. If physical invites are a must, go sustainable and choose a company that uses recycled paper. 2. Get Hitched Outdoors Cut down on the energy used by tying the knot in the great outdoors. Have a stunning Colorado backdrop and natural lighting for photos all while reducing energy usage on your wedding day. 3. Source from Local Farmers Look for caterers who source their food locally for an organic and sustainable wedding menu. Buy your booze from local breweries, distilleries and wineries. The less distance your food and liquor must travel, the smaller the carbon footprint. 4. Choose Recycled or Dried Flowers Flowers are a focal point to any wedding, but freshly cut plants aren’t the best for the environment. Easy fix: consider a florist that uses recycled or dried flowers for your floral arrangements. www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 27

5. Ditch the Confetti Be environmentally conscious when planning ways for guests to celebrate during your recessional. As appealing as tossing paper confetti may seem, it’s not environmentally friendly or easy to clean up. Think plant-based and biodegradable when planning your big send-off. 6. Rent, Reuse + Recycle Anything that is single-use is harmful to the planet. Eliminate carbon emissions – and save your groomsmen some money – by renting tuxes. Go green and swap plastics with rented dinnerware, glassware and wedding décor to reduce waste destined for the landfill. 6

5 Color Palettes for Any Season From pretty pastels and shades of blue to blush pink tones and sage greens, these wedding color palettes look beautiful no matter the time of year. Pastels The ever-popular pastel palette is not just for spring and summer – the collection of soft shades works for the cooler months, too. This pastel color combination is chic and romantic, no matter what time of the year you’re getting married.

Blush Tones Combine different shades of pink to create your dream wedding palette regardless of the season. A timeless color, hues of pink and blush tones add a touch of feminine effect throughout your decor. Pop accent colors into wedding floral arrangements to complement the season.

Neutral Shades The neutral color combination of creamy beiges, warm tans and pearly whites create a natural, earthy setting for your Steamboat wedding day. Whether you’re planning an outdoor barn wedding at a local ranch or a winter-themed celebration on the mountain, these colors are adaptable for any time of the year.

www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 31

Natural Greens For those who are one with nature, this green color palette is ideal. Sage greens, grayed jades and olive tones give off an earthy rustic mood. Incorporate natural, harvested greenery for an organic outdoor setting year-round – even if you’re getting married indoors.

Dusty Blues A popular wedding color, dusty blue is a dreamy, soft, romantic hue that works well with every season. Pairing the dusty blues with fresh greenery and complementing accent colors – like rose gold or gray undertones – creates a beautiful wedding palette for any season.

COLORADO MOUNTAIN COLLEGE is conveniently located just above

downtown Steamboat Springs with beautiful views of the Yampa Valley. It’s the perfect spot to hold your wedding and reception.

Tips from a Wedding Planner Steamboat Wedding Day asked Alex Mathisen of SoulSpark Events to provide insight on wedding planning’s frequently asked questions. What should couples prioritize in planning their wedding? Couples should stay true to themselves, and ask each other what is most important. I always ask them to think about their “Why.” Why are they getting married? Once they have figured out their “Why,” choosing a venue and prioritizing everything is much easier.

How should couples decide their wedding date or season? I ask them what they love most about each season, and why they love that season in Steamboat. If you hate being cold, then a winter wedding isn't for you. If you love fall colors, then September is the season for you. It also ties back to their “Why.”

How do you suggest couples choose their venue? I encourage couples to figure out their anticipated guest list and plan on around a 15% attrition rate. In our experience, most guests say yes as they like to come to Steamboat. Once you have a guest count, you can figure out how big a venue you need. Then I ask them to think about the budget and how much they want to spend on their wedding day. This helps keep the planning process realistic and ensures we can match couples with the right venue for them. Then we talk about the style of venue they want and talk about different options – ranch, formal, casual, etc.

How do you guide couples to select a color palette? Choosing the venue is the first thing to do. The palette needs to work with the venue – not against it. I encourage couples to spend some time playing with color – looking around at what colors are in their house and what colors are in their wardrobes. I encourage them to think about colors they are drawn to in nature. I also encourage couples to go to the paint store and get a whole bunch of paint color cards and play with them. Some couples like to choose bridesmaids’ dresses first and then base the palette from the dresses. If flowers are really important to the couple, then we talk

34 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2022

about what flowers are in season and this will determine color. Do you have any tips for selecting the menu for the wedding reception? I tie everything back to their “Why,” and the food is no exception. If you want a casual, fun vibe, then a three-course

seated meal is not for you, but maybe food trucks or a pig roast are the way to go. For weddings that last a couple of days and include a welcome dinner and brunch, we try to vary the food over the course of the weekend so that guests are not eating the same food at each event.
