CULTURE

Celebrate the culture of Steamboat Springs with events like the Fourth of July parade, the rodeo and First Friday ArtWalk.

AMERICA 250 COLORADO 150

This year, Colorado celebrates the Sesquisemiquincentennial (say that three times fast!). That’s more colloquially known as America 250 - Colorado 150, a statewide celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and Colorado’s 150th birthday. Fun fact: Colorado is known as the Centennial State because it entered the Union in 1876, exactly 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

This summer, Steamboat Springs is celebrating at the Fourth of July

parade. The parade will take place in downtown Steamboat; arrive before the 10 a.m. start time to snag a front-row spot to the action. Afterwards, take in a jumping competition at Howelsen

Hill, listen to live music at the base of Steamboat Resort and later that night, catch a rodeo show. There’s no shortage of activities in town this weekend. Happy birthday, Colorado!

Under the Lights

A guide to the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo

The Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo is a staple of summer in the Yampa Valley, combining Western tradition with a full evening of entertainment for all ages.

Start by buying a ticket: They should be purchased through the official rodeo website or authorized sellers (like F.M. Light & Sons) to ensure availability and avoid inflated resale prices.

Seating options vary. The Gold Buckle section provides the closest view and is the only assigned seating, located directly above the bucking chutes. These tickets are ideal for those who want a reserved seat and a close-up perspective of the action. Covered and uncovered grandstand seating is general admission. Covered seats offer protection from weather and tend to sell out quickly,

while uncovered seating provides more flexibility, but are farther away from the action. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and guests with general admission tickets should plan to arrive by 6:30-6:45 p.m. for the best seat selection.

Dinner is available on-site, with barbecue as the main offering alongside burgers and hot dogs, funnel cakes, ice cream treats and drinks, including alcoholic beverages. Food and drink vendors are open throughout the evening, making it easy to eat before the action starts or snack during the rodeo.

Live country music begins prior to the main event, which typically starts

around 7:30 p.m., with the grand entry of riders, horses and the presentation of flags.

The rodeo features traditional events including bull riding, barrel racing, team roping and bronc riding. Rodeo clowns provide entertainment between events, while also assisting with safety in the arena. Kids will enjoy the calf and ram scramble, during which they can enter the arena to chase a calf or ram (depending on age) with a flag attached. The first child to grab the flag wins. Pro tip: close-toed shoes are encouraged. It is also smart to bring extra layers, as the temperature drops after sunset.

Watch the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo every Friday and Saturday night from Friday, June 19, through Saturday, Aug. 29, from 5:30-9:30 p.m., with an additional rodeo on Thursday, July 2. For more information and tickets, visit www.steamboatprorodeo.com.

Steamboat’s Creative Side

While summer in Steamboat Springs is renowned for outdoor adventure and mountain scenery, the town’s thriving art scene offers another way to experience the culture of the Yampa Valley.

Museums and Galleries

A highlight of the season is Steamboat Art Museum’s summer exhibition featuring the national exhibition of the Oil Painters of America. The nationally respected organization promotes excellence in traditional oil painting, and the exhibition brings together works from some of the country’s leading representational artists. The exhibit runs Friday, May 29, through Saturday, Aug. 29.

At the Jace Romick Gallery, find distinctive Western and contemporary works, as well as a large collection of historic Western photographer Roland Reed’s prints and artifacts.

Wild Horse Gallery showcases fine Western art and sculpture from both local and nationally acclaimed artists.

Stop by the historic Depot Art Center, a space that serves as a hub for the local arts community, hosting rotating exhibitions, workshops, classes and events throughout the year. It’s a welcoming place to experience the many forms of creativity that continue to shape Steamboat’s cultural landscape.

creative venues open their doors for extended evening hours (5-8 p.m.), inviting locals and visitors alike to stroll downtown, explore new exhibitions, and often meet the artists behind the work.

Live Music

Steamboat’s summer soundtrack comes alive with music throughout the season, from the nationally renowned Strings Music Festival to the Steamboat Free Summer Concert Series at Howelsen Hill. With a variety of performances in classical, jazz, rock, bluegrass and folk, visitors can enjoy music under the open sky in one of Colorado’s most scenic mountain settings.

Whether visiting a museum, browsing downtown galleries or joining in on the live music, Steamboat’s art scene offers a welcoming way to experience the creativity that continues to shape the community.

WELCOME TO STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

The perfect place to lose or find yourself in hundreds of miles of public trails. Seek serenity or adventure in a picturesque park, facility, or summer event. Soak in or up sunshine, endless recreation, river activities or mineral springs. Best of all, enjoy all of it in a place where happy hour lasts all day!

Plan a Fall Visit

The magic found during summertime in Steamboat Springs doesn’t end after Labor Day – instead, it turns into the golden days of fall. It’s the perfect time of year for a long hike or a bike ride (check page 24 for recommendations) and it’s a great time to check out all Steamboat has to offer. While you’re here, try one of these fall events.

Steamboat OktoberWest is a highly anticipated annual event that will take place Friday-Saturday, Sept. 11-12. The weekend kicks off with a beer stroll downtown and is followed on Saturday by different experiences, (choose your own!) including a beer garden, tastings

and games. For tickets and more info, visit www.steamboatchamber.com.

Book lovers will want to experience Literary Sojourn, Steamboat’s own festival of authors. This year’s authors include a Pulitzer Prize winner, a bestseller and a “New Yorker” staff writer. Visit www.literarysojourn.org for dates and tickets.

Stop by Steamboat Art Museum to view plein air works from local and national artists who travel to town in September to paint during the annual festival. Afterwards, their pieces are displayed in the museum, this year through Saturday, Oct. 31.

Foodies will want to attend the Steamboat Food & Wine Festival, held Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 1-4. Stay for Restaurant Week, which takes place Saturday-Saturday, Oct. 3-10. Make reservations in advance to taste chef’s special creations and snag some can’tmiss deals. For more information, visit www.mainstreetsteamboat.com.

Fall in Steamboat ends right around Halloween, usually with snow just in time for the downtown Halloween Stroll. But Steamboat kids are tough –you’ll find them trick-or-treating down Lincoln Avenue from 5-7 p.m. as local businesses open their doors and get the candy out.

ADVENTURE

Paddle into the sunset with your pup at one of Routt County’s three scenic lakes.

Within an hour of Steamboat Springs, several scenic lakes offer easy access to boating, paddling, fishing and relaxing along the water. These nearby lakes make great summer day trips.

Stagecoach State Park 17 miles south | ~20–25 minutes

The closest large lake to Steamboat, Stagecoach Reservoir is a favorite for summer watersports. Visitors come to boat, wakeboard, paddleboard, swim and fish. The park features a marina with rentals, boat ramps, a swim beach, picnic areas and shoreline trails. A Colorado State Parks day pass ($12 per vehicle) is required. Several large parking areas are located near the marina, beach and trailheads.

Lake Life

Steamboat Lake State Park 30 miles north | ~40 minutes

Set beneath the iconic silhouette of Hahns Peak, Steamboat Lake is one of the most scenic recreation spots in Routt County. The lake supports both motorized and non-motorized boating and offers a marina, boat ramp, swim beach, campgrounds and picnic areas. It’s popular for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing and family lake days. Entry requires a Colorado State Parks day pass ($12 per vehicle). Parking is available near the marina, beach and day-use areas. For those who want to stay dry, Hahns Peak has a great hike to the top of the peak. Pack sunscreen and water bottles, though, because it’s high elevation and ascends above the tree line.

Pearl Lake State Park 25 miles north | ~40 minutes

Just beyond the town of Clark, Pearl Lake offers a quieter alternative to the larger lakes nearby. This smaller alpine lake is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and fishing. Motorized boats are allowed but must operate at wakeless speeds, helping preserve the peaceful atmosphere. The park also features a scenic campground along the shoreline for visitors who want to stay overnight (make reservations online at www.cpw.state.co.us), along with picnic areas and hiking trails. A Colorado State Parks day pass ($12 per vehicle) is required, with parking available near the day-use area and boat launch.

Six Must-Try Trails

Creek Falls is the number-one attraction in the Steamboat Springs area. It is located about three miles from downtown.

Fish

Summer in Steamboat Springs means long days, wildflower-covered hillsides and miles of trails just minutes from downtown. Whether it’s a relaxed stroll, a scenic singletrack ride or a full alpine adventure, the Yampa Valley offers something for every level. These six local favorites highlight some of the best hiking and biking trails to explore during a summer stay.

HIKING

Easy: Fish Creek Falls Lower Trail

Just three miles from downtown, the lower trail at Fish Creek Falls is one of Steamboat’s most iconic outdoor stops. A paved half-mile path leads to an overlook of the dramatic 280-foot waterfall as it plunges into a rocky canyon. The short walk makes it perfect for families or visitors looking for a quick nature experience close to town, especially in early summer when snowmelt makes the falls thunder. Make sure to have $5 for the parking lot fee.

Moderate: Blackmere Trail on Emerald Mountain Rising directly above town, Emerald Mountain offers a network of trails with

sweeping valley views. Blackmere ascends steadily through open hillsides and aspen groves before revealing panoramic views of the Yampa Valley and downtown Steamboat. The trail climbs roughly two miles from the base to the overlook (about four miles round trip). Wildflowers often blanket the slopes in summer, making the hike as colorful as it is scenic.

Advanced: Zirkel Circle

For hikers looking to experience Colorado’s high country, the Zirkel Circle in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness delivers an unforgettable alpine journey. This roughly 11-mile loop winds through dense forest and into dramatic alpine basins dotted with pristine lakes, including Gold Creek Lake. Towering peaks, wildflowers and quiet wilderness make it one of the most spectacular full-day hikes within reach of Steamboat.

BIKING

Easy: Yampa River Core Trail

The paved Yampa River Core Trail runs more than seven miles through town along the Yampa River, connecting parks, neighborhoods and downtown shops.

With gentle terrain and scenic river views, it’s the perfect ride for families or casual cyclists who want to explore Steamboat at a relaxed pace.

Moderate: Lupine Trail

Located just minutes from downtown on Emerald Mountain, Lupine Trail is a classic Steamboat singletrack ride providing smooth, rolling terrain. In early summer, the slopes come alive with vibrant purple lupine flowers – giving the trail its name and making it one of the most scenic rides in the area.

Advanced: Flash of Gold

Often ranked among the region’s best mountain bike rides, Flash of Gold offers a thrilling high-country climb or descent above Steamboat. The roughly 10-mile point-to-point trail on Buffalo Pass winds through forests, ridgelines and wide-open meadows with stunning views of the Yampa Valley. With technical sections and a long downhill run, it’s a bucket list ride for experienced mountain bikers looking to tackle Steamboat’s legendary trail system.

Bring the Kids

Five things to do in Steamboat with the whole family

Amaze’n Steamboat

It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon full of friendly competition with activities that the whole family will enjoy. Open Memorial Day weekend through September. Check the website, www.amazensteamboat. com, for specific dates, times and prices.

Old Town Hot Springs

Soak, splash and swim at this Steamboat landmark. The site was first discovered by the Utes, who visited the springs for physical and spiritual healing. Bring a lunch – coolers with

outside food and drink are permitted but leave the alcohol and glass at home. For daily ticket prices and more info, visit www.oldtownhotsprings.org.

Mountain Fun

Cool off at Burgess Creek Beach at the base of the mountain, where kids can dig in the sand and splash in the water. Bonus: Parents can grab a drink from nearby Slopeside or Los Locos and bring it beach-side.

Steamboat Climbing Collective

Get out of the hot sun and get on the climbing wall. Drop in during the week from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. or on Sundays from 10:30 a.m.-6 pm. It’s recommended to check the website first to make sure a large group isn’t already using the space. Adults cost $19.50 while kids are $13 (ask about discounted rates) and shoes

are $3 to rent. A parent or guardian will need to sign a waiver and be present for the session. Half- and full-day camp options are also available. Visit www.steamboatclimbingcollective.com to sign up.

Snow Bowl

If you’re looking for a rainy day or indoor activity, head to Snow Bowl and grab a lane. But don’t stop there – grab a cold drink and some food while you’re at it. Snow Bowl is a bowling alley that’s known for its menu – and its music. On Wednesdays and Saturdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day, check out the band on the outdoor stage. This summer’s lineup features bands like Constant Change, Sneezy and Float Like a Buffalo. Check www.snowbowlsteamboat.com for the full schedule.

Stunningly Steamboat

Four breathtaking outdoor wedding venues

Located just south of Steamboat Springs, Flying Diamond Ranch's wedding venue is situated in a private mountain setting.
Katie McClendon and Cody Smith stand amid golden autumn grasses at La Joya Dulce, north of Steamboat Springs.

Steamboat Springs and the surrounding area offer a landscape where mountain views, open valleys and quiet ranchland set the tone for a wedding weekend. Each venue draws from that natural beauty in its own way, creating a celebration that feels deeply connected to its setting. Here are four to consider.

La Joya Dulce

La Joya Dulce is a luxury ranch wedding venue set in the Elk River Valley. Just nine miles north of Steamboat Springs, it’s one of Steamboat’s closest ranch wedding venues. Named one of the top 20 wedding venues in Colorado, the ranch features wideopen meadows, aspen groves and long mountain views, creating a setting that feels both expansive and quietly secluded.

Weddings at La Joya Dulce are fully customizable with multiple facilities to choose from, including ceremony sites and outdoor spaces, a fully finished event barn and a 6,500-square foot pavilion. With space to host, gather and settle in, La Joya Dulce invites a slower, more immersive kind of wedding. For more information, visit www.lajoyadulce.com.

Steamboat Resort

Steamboat Resort offers a distinctly alpine setting, where ceremonies can take place high above the valley, reached by gondola. The experience of ascending the mountain – guests arrive to sweeping views of the Yampa Valley and surrounding peaks – creates a sense of occasion that is inherent to the setting itself. The resort combines this elevated landscape with full-service amenities, including on-site lodging, dining and coordinated guest experiences. It’s an environment that balances the grandeur of the mountains with the ease of a well-orchestrated destination weekend. For more information, visit www.weddings.steamboat.com.

Flying Diamond Ranch

Located just south of Steamboat, Flying Diamond Ranch is surrounded by thousands of acres of ranchlands, giving it a sense of privacy and scale that feels uninterrupted by the outside world. Aspen groves, open meadows and distant mountain ridgelines define the landscape, while celebrations are centered around a tented reception that blends into the natural surroundings, rather than competing with them. At Flying Diamond, the environment and the event come together in a way that feels entirely personal. For more information, visit www.flyingdiamondevents.com.

Day Off Ranch

Day Off Ranch sprawls over 100 acres right outside of Craig and about an hour away from Steamboat. Here the terrain opens into wide skies and rolling land. The stunning landscape pairs with a modern, well-appointed event space designed for a seamless indoor-outdoor flow, allowing celebrations to transition naturally throughout the day. Guest Guide

Five tips for a Steamboat wedding

Steamboat Springs provides a beautiful mountain setting for a wedding weekend, with classic Colorado scenery and elevations above 6,700 feet. While the views and fresh air are a highlight, the altitude and climate can be an adjustment. A bit of preparation will help ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Dress for Changing Weather

Mountain weather can shift quickly from warm afternoons to cool evenings. Bringing layers, such as a light jacket, wrap or shawl, will help with these temperature changes. Comfortable footwear is also advisable for navigating grass, gravel or uneven terrain.

Sun Protection is Key Sun exposure is more intense at higher elevations, even on cooler or cloudy days. Regular use of SPF 30+ sunscreen is strongly recommended, along with

SPF lip balm. A hat and sunglasses provide additional protection and comfort during outdoor events.

Adjusting to Altitude

Visitors coming from lower elevations may notice mild effects such as fatigue, shortness of breath or lightheadedness, particularly within the first 24-48 hours.

The most effective way to manage this is to stay consistently hydrated. Increasing water intake before arrival and maintaining it throughout the trip can make a significant difference. Alcohol may feel stronger at elevation, so moderation is recommended.

Stay Hydrated and Replenished

In addition to water, incorporating electrolytes can help maintain energy levels and reduce altitude-related symptoms. Electrolyte packets or sports drinks are easy options to have on hand.

Take It Easy and Enjoy

With travel, altitude and a full schedule of events, pacing activities and allowing time to rest can help maintain energy throughout the weekend. With a little preparation, the setting, celebration and overall experience in Steamboat can be fully enjoyed from start to finish.

How to Buy Cowboy Boots

Cowboy boots aren’t just for the rodeo in Steamboat Springs. They show up at summer concerts, downtown dinners, and just about anywhere locals gather. For visitors curious about bringing a little piece of the West home, many people start at F.M. Light & Sons, a downtown landmark that has been helping customers find the right boots for generations.

Ruth Peterson, one of the store’s boot experts, regularly helps visitors navigate the selection. She often starts by pulling a few different styles – square toes, round toes and classic Western shapes – to help customers see the differences. The first lesson comes quickly: cowboy boots are not meant to slide on easily. Using the pull straps at the top of the shaft, wearers guide their foot through a snug instep before it settles into place, sometimes with a soft little pop. That sound means the foot has seated correctly inside the boot.

Ruth also introduces many first-time buyers to a few classic boot-shop tools. Wood-handled boot pulls can make getting into a snug pair easier, while a boot jack helps remove them without a balancing act. These tools have been part of the boot-buying experience for generations.

Customers are often encouraged to walk a few laps around the store to test the fit. A small amount of heel movement may feel surprising at first, but it’s completely normal in a new boot and typically disappears as the leather softens and the sole begins to flex.

At F.M. Light, many quality leather boots start around $150–$250, while popular everyday styles often fall in the $250-$400 range. Handmade boots or exotic leathers, like ostrich or snakeskin, can climb higher, but a well-crafted pair is built to last for years and often becomes more comfortable with time.

Chris Dillenbeck, the store’s owner, shares one practical tip for anyone struggling to get a properly fitted boot on: “Sometimes the right fitted boot is hard to put on. You can put a plastic bag around your foot and it’ll slide right into the boot, then you just slip the plastic bag out.” It’s a simple trick that has helped many first-time buyers get past that snug instep. Like most good leather goods, cowboy boots get better with age. At first, they may feel stiff, but as the leather breaks in, the boot slowly molds to the shape of the foot. Before long, the creases and scuffs begin to tell a story – one that often starts on a wooden bench in a boot shop in Steamboat.

Stop by Mountain Tap for local beer, wood-fired pizzas and small plate snacks. The family-style tables out front can accommodate larger groups and there are games inside to bring out to the table while you wait. Get up even higher on the rooftop of Salt & Lime. You’ll get a killer view of downtown Steamboat and Sleeping Giant in the distance, served up with ice cold margaritas and housemade guacamole.

Dinner

At Aurum Food & Wine, the patio offers a front row seat to watch the Yampa River flow by – wave to those kayakers as they pass by. Mambo is in the heart of downtown, serving up classic Italian fare under string lights on their front porch. E3 Chophouse offers hearty steaks – and classic chophouse fare –also with a side of fantastic river views. Locals’ tip: for dinners outside, bring an extra layer; once that sun dips down behind the mountains, the temps will drop lower.

Stroll along Yampa Street, aka Restaurant Row, to find numerous sidewalk and riverside dining options.

Locals Love It

Looking for the best burger? Or where to buy that souvenir sweatshirt you wanted? We asked six locals to share their favorite spots downtown. Here’s what they said.

Where to Listen to Live Music

Local musician Pat Waters says the best soundtrack to a Steamboat summer is the free concert series at Snow Bowl. Grab a drink, find a spot on the lawn and settle in – this is how locals do live music.

Where to Buy Local Jewelry

We reached out to local artist Paulina Johnson, who is a co-owner at Pine Moon Fine Art. She recommended her fellow co-owner, Tibby Speare, who makes handcrafted pieces from metal, stones and gems. Find her jewelry at Pine Moon Fine Art. Or stop by Ohana to browse creations from local artisans like Brett Buckles and Sabina Jewelry.

Pickin’ on the Dead performs at Snow Bowl’s free summer music festival in 2025.

Where to Buy a Great Sweatshirt

We took this question to the teenagers and the result was clear: “We all like Upcountry for sweatshirts,” says high school student Lyla Baker. “They have simple, cute and modern prints that are perfect for day-to-day wear and are very comfortable.”

Where to Sip the Best Cocktail

After more than a decade in Steamboat’s restaurant scene, Natasha Krefft knows where to find a great drink. Her pick: the Silver Sage at Aurum Food & Wine – bright, herbal and the perfect sip for a golden summer evening by the river.

Where to Find a Good Burger

When ski legend Pete Wither needs to refuel, he goes big. He swears by the burgers at Après Burger Bistro – stacked high, dripping with flavor and exactly what you want after a long day outside.

Where to Tune Your Bike

Routt County Riders runs a community bike shop with a bonus: it’s free for anyone to use. Check the link for hours; they change based on the season. Local member Paul Majors says a mechanic is on duty and a wide variety of parts are available for purchase. www.routtcountyriders.org/bikematch/

For a full-service shop, he suggests Ride Workshop. “They provide a very high level of detail and the best bikes,” Paul says. “They also have high-end rentals if people are not traveling with their own but still want to ride the very best.”

The Middle Fork wildfire near Steamboat Springs was caused by lighting, but most are human-caused.

Reduce the Risk

Wildfire safety in Northwest Colorado

Summers in the mountains bring warm days, beautiful trails and time spent outdoors – but they also bring increased wildfire risk. Dry grasses and forests combined with windy conditions can allow a small spark to grow quickly into a wildfire. To help protect our public lands and communities, land managers may implement fire restrictions throughout the summer. Understanding what these restrictions mean, and taking a few simple precautions while

recreating outside, can help everyone enjoy the outdoors safely while reducing the risk of wildfire.

Why Restrictions Matter

Most wildfires are started by people – often accidentally. Fire restrictions are put in place to reduce risk during hot, dry weather when a single spark can ignite a wildfire. By following these rules, we can help protect forests, wildlife, homes and the communities that depend on them.

Updated fire restrictions: https://dfpc.colorado.gov/sections/wildfire-information-center/fire-restriction-information

To put out a campfire, use the “drown, stir and feel” method: soak the ashes with water, stir with a shovel to break up coals, and re-soak until all materials are cold to the touch. Never leave a fire unattended until it is cool enough to touch, as embers can reignite.

Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

Stage 1 restrictions are implemented when fire danger begins increasing. Campfires are usually still allowed, but only in developed campgrounds or designated fire rings. Smoking must be done in cleared areas, and some equipment that produces sparks may be limited. Visitors should use extra caution with any flame or heat source.

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions

Stage 2 restrictions are stricter and occur during very dry conditions. Campfires, charcoal grills and other open flames are typically prohibited, even in many campgrounds. Visitors should plan to use propane or gas camp stoves for cooking. Activities that can create sparks – such as certain tools or target shooting – may also be restricted.

Fire Ban / Extreme Fire Danger

During periods of extreme fire danger, additional closures or bans may be implemented. All open flames may be prohibited, and some areas may close entirely to protect public safety and allow firefighters to respond quickly if needed. Visitors should follow all posted signs and guidance from land management agencies.

Walk back in time and discover historic Steamboat Springs

Astroll through downtown reveals the history and development of our community and buildings dating back to the late 1800s. Town founder James H. Crawford and a handful of settlers established the first post office, school, church, saw mill, newspaper and hotel. These early visionaries built handsome stone storefronts as a testament to the town’s potential amidst the wilderness.

1 | TREAD OF PIONEERS MUSEUM | 800 OAK ST.

Constructed by Ernest Campbell in 1901, this was home to the Zimmerman family from 1914 to 1956. In 1959, the Tread of Pioneers Museum opened in this building on the corner of Fifth and Oak Streets. In 1988, the building was moved to this location. The Utterback house ● was also moved to the site in 1997 from its original location at Fourth and Oak and adjoined to the museum. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

2 | GIAMBONI HOUSE | 646 OAK ST.

Camillo Giamboni built this structure in 1888. Hidden under the siding is the original log building. This was home to Swiss brothers Henry and Camillo Giamboni, who were the first to make skis commercially in Steamboat Springs.

3 | CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH | SEVENTH & OAK ST. ● ● ●

Margaret Crawford, founding mother of Steamboat Springs, was a charter member of the town’s Christian Science Society, organized in July 1908. The log building, which continues to house the Christian Science Church, was completed in November 1934.

4 | WILLETT HOUSE | 443 OAK ST. ●

Built in 1906, this home is one of the few remaining pre-railroad vernacular wood frame structures in town. It has been owned by local noteworthy individuals such as George and Archibald Wither, Judge Charles Morning and most significantly Dr. F.E. Willett. Willett served as the community doctor for nearly 60 years.

5 | ROUTT COUNTY COURTHOUSE | 522 LINCOLN AVE. ●

The cornerstone for the Routt County Courthouse was laid on Sept. 9, 1922. Designed by noted Colorado architect Robert Fuller, the three-story building was completed in December 1923 at a cost of $122,000.

6 | THE OLD TOWN PUB | 600 LINCOLN AVE.

Built in 1904 by Ernest Campbell, this structure was originally the U.S. Post Office, followed by the Royal and Albany hotels. From 1914

Compiled with the help of the Tread of Pioneers Museum and Historic Routt County, the tour takes approximately one to two hours. Public parking is available on Eighth and Oak streets across from the museum.

Downtown Steamboat Springs is a National Historic District.

to 1921, the building was a hospital run by Dr. F.E. Willett. After the hospital relocated, the second floor became the Odd Fellows dance hall. The first floor served as a grocery, electric store and public libray from 1924 to 1967.

7 | PIONEER BUILDING | 700 BLOCK OF LINCOLN AVE. ●

The Pioneer Buidling served as a hotel from 1923 until 1979. In its heyday, the upstairs rooms were run as a classic Western boarding house and the downstairs housed the Pioneer Bar.

8 | FIRST NATIONAL BANK/REHDER BUILDING | EIGHTH & LINCOLN AVE. (STEAMBOAT ART MUSEUM) ● ● ●

The First National Bank of Steamboat Springs, chartered in 1902, occupied a small frame structure on this site until the present building was constructed in 1905. Dakota sandstone from the Emerald Mountain quarry and handmade bricks from Trogler’s local brickyard were used in the construction.

9 | CHIEF THEATER | 813 LINCOLN AVE. ●

The Chief Theater was constructed by local master builder Arthur Gumprecht in 1926 and owned by Harry Gordon. The large, singlestory brick masonry building included an orchestra pit, stage and the capacity to seat 500 people, making it the largest theater in Northwest Colorado.

10 | HOWELSEN HILL | SEEN FROM NINTH AND LINCOLN AVE. ● ● ●

Rising up steeply from the south side of the Yampa River, this section of Emerald Mountain is named for Norwegian ski jumper

Carl Howelsen, the “Flying Norseman” of Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. Howelsen arrived in Steamboat Springs in 1913 and introduced the townspeople to ski jumping and recreational skiing. By the 1930s, Howelsen Hill facilities included slalom and downhill courses, lights for night skiing, and a “boat tow” consisting of two sleds pulled up the mountain by a cable powered by a Model T engine and transmission. In 1947, a combination chair/T-bar lift was installed to the top of Emerald Mountain; it was one of the longest

LINCOLN AVENUE
YAMPA ST.

lifts in the U.S. at that time. For over a century, the ski hill has served as the home for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, a nationally known training program.

11 | HARWIG’S SADDLERY | 911 LINCOLN AVE. (HARWIG’S)

Built in 1901, this was originally a meat market. In 1916 it became Harwig’s Saddlery and Western Wear, which was run by the Harwig family until 1984. The historic cowboy sign over the storefront was painted in the 1950s or 1960s by noted Western artist Merrill Mahaffey. The cowboy is now on display inside, safe from the elements, in the restaurant’s vestibule, where he welcomes restaurant patrons.

12 | THE OLD PILOT BUILDING | 1009 LINCOLN AVE.

James Hoyle began Northwest Colorado’s first newspaper, The Steamboat Pilot, on July 31, 1885. This brick and stone building was constructed in the fall of 1909 for the newspaper printing office, which occupied the building until 1999.

13 | STEAMBOAT LAUNDRY BUILDING | 11TH AND OAK ST. (THE LAUNDRY RESTAURANT & CREEKSIDE CAFÉ) ● ●

Built over a 13-year period starting in 1906, this two-story brick and river-rock structure was constructed for the Steamboat Laundry, Dry Cleaning and Pressing business, which it served as until the late 1970s.

18 | F.M. LIGHT & SONS | 830 LINCOLN AVE.

The F.M. Light family moved from Hicksville, Ohio to Steamboat in 1905. Soon after their arrival, they purchased the lot, erected the building and secured enough merchandise to open this clothing store. Light family members traveled throughout Northwest Colorado and southern Wyoming displaying their merchandise and taking orders from ranchers for Western wear, hats, boots, saddles and equipment. The retail store is still owned by family members.

14 | CARVER POWER PLANT | 10TH STREET BETWEEN LINCOLN AVE. AND OAK ST. (CENTENNIAL HALL) ● ●

Originally built as a wood building in 1901, this coal-fired power plant made Steamboat Springs the first town in Northwest Colorado to provide its residents with electricity. The steam, a by-product of the system used to create electricity, was used to heat nearby schools and residences. The building continued to serve as a power plant until the 1950s. In the late 1990s, the City of Steamboat Springs purchased and rehabilitated the structure for public use as the historic portion of Centennial Hall.

15 | LORENZ BUILDING | 928 LINCOLN AVE.

This brick building was built in 1903. In 1912, it became the courthouse when the county seat relocated from Hahn’s Peak. After 1921, the courtroom occupied the second floor, while the clerk, treasurer and jail shared the ground floor. When the present-day courthouse was completed in 1923, the building became the site of a dance hall called the Social Benefit Association.

16 | HUGUS BUILDING/THIESEN MALL | 912 LINCOLN AVE. (STEAMBOAT SMOKEHOUSE)

Built in 1899, this was the site of J.W. Hugus & Co., one of the nation’s first general store chains. The original brick storefront is hidden under the contemporary façade.

17 | MAXWELL/SQUIRE BUILDING | 840 LINCOLN AVE. (LYON DRUG STORE) ● ●

Construction of the building was financed by town investor, J.P. Maxwell. The building was constructed with local pressed brick from Trogler’s brickyard, and completed with local stone trim and plate glass. From 1909 to 1962, the post office occupied the ground floor. In 1909, Chamberlain-Grey Drug Store took over ownership. Now, over 100 years later, the building is still home to a locally owned drug store/pharmacy.

19 | THE FURLONG BUILDING | 810 LINCOLN AVE. (BUSHWACKER’S)

This building was started in 1919 and finished in July 1920 using stone from the Emerald Mountain quarry to frame the windows. Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen completed the brickwork and masonry.

20 | THE ROUTT COUNTY NATIONAL BANK BUILDING | 802 LINCOLN AVE. (WILD HORSE GALLERY) ● ●

Built in 1919 with stonework by Carl Howelsen, this building is a unique landmark of two different periods. The Lincoln Avenue façade shows the rehabilitated 1919 exterior, and the Eighth Street side displays the changes from the 1940s.

Extended Tour

A. AND B. CRAWFORD HOUSES | 1238 AND 1184 CRAWFORD AVE. ● ●

Crawford homes are private residences so please respect private property. The second and third houses built by the founding family of Steamboat Springs, the Crawfords, are still standing. The second home, at 1238 Crawford Ave. (on 12th Street), was built in 1886 from native lumber from the Suttle Mill. The bay window was added later to accommodate their daughter’s wedding reception. The large stone house at 1184 Crawford Ave. ● ● was built in 1894 of stone from the Emerald Mountain quarry. The family occupied this house until Mrs. Crawford’s death in 1939. Crawford’s descendants purchased the house in 2004 and carefully restored it.

C. HISTORIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUILDING | 1201 LINCOLN AVE. (YAMPA VALLEY LAND TRUST) ●

Located along Soda Creek next to the library, this small 1960 structure is one of Czechoslovakian-born architect Eugene Sternberg’s two midcentury modern “Usonian style” buildings in downtown Steamboat Springs (listed on the National Historic Register). The building’s nearly flat inverted pitch roof gives the visual impression of a butterfly in flight, so that locally, the building is known as the “Butterfly Building.”

D. THE DEPOT | 1001 13TH ST. ● ● ●

Designed by famous Denver architect Frank E. Edbrooke, the railroad Depot was fully financed by the citizens and businesses of the town in order to entice the railroad line through Steamboat Springs. Construction for the building began shortly before the first passenger train arrived on Jan. 6, 1909, and was operational by August of that year. Passenger service was discontinued in 1968, and eventually the Depot became home to Steamboat Creates and the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts.
