he ability of democratizing the arts… making it available to more people, and giving people a chance to develop their own talents, will be one of the most important strategies we can pursue to build a future we can all share and live with.” – President Bill Clinton at the State of the Arts Summit 2014 In a recent talk at the State of the Arts Summit addressing the importance of the arts to society, President Bill Clinton eloquently explained that almost all bad news stories are about identity. A negative sense of identity swamps any sense of our common humanity. Art, in all its forms, is a chance to make meaning out of our experiences, to explore our identity. We become more fully human through art and when we connect with our true nature, we care. We care about ourselves, each other and our world, because when we know ourselves, we can celebrate diversity. We understand on a soul level the

biological fact that every non-age-related difference (ie. gender, race, body shape, hair color) is scientifically rooted in only one half of one percent of our genome. So many of the problems in our world come from lack of opportunities to find our way in life and explore our commonality, ourselves. This is the relevance of any arts outreach program. Art gives people this freedom. It is why self-confidence and statewide test scores soar when arts programs are integrated into our schools. Art makes us better, smarter, more openminded, creative problem-solving people. The Arts Council supports the soul of this community, by giving artists space to explore, and encouraging their imaginations to soar, to make this part of the world more beautiful and connected. Schiesser makes an encore appearance on the cover of the Winter 2014/15 guide, with a subdued palette, a move toward realism and an introspective approach. “Rain,” number seven of 14 pieces in her ongoing lotus series, is oil and silver leaf on linen, 18” x 24”. Recent visits to Kauai’s Hindu Monastery profoundly influenced Schiesser’s new work. On the monastery grounds are two picturesque temples, blue marble art, tranquil ponds, pools and secluded gardens, where lotuses blossom in the tropical rainforest. A new hand-carved temple, 20 years in the making, is under construction

at the monastery. “It was a comforting, nourishing setting for contemplative and enlightening experiences,” Schiesser says. As she was going through a series of transitions in her personal life, the lotus flower caught her interest. A traditional Hindu symbol of ethereal beauty, the lotus is also a Buddhist symbol of reawakening. Schiesser’s palette for “Rain” consisted of five colors, each of which is connected with Hindu chakras, or energy centers.

She often sketches local lotuses at the Yampa River Park for inspiration. “I feel like the work I’m doing now has uninterrupted focus, based on a soul level of introspection,” Schiesser says. “There are lyrical passages in the background of ‘Rain.’ I let the paint take its course.” Schiesser studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and has been active in the local art scene since 1997. Until recently, she ran RED, a gallery formerly located on the mountain. This winter, her work can be seen in Fort Collins in December at The Fine Art and Frame Company (formerly Indigo Gallery) and at the William Havu Gallery in Denver.
