This valley has always been home to storytellers. Before the arrival of settlers, Indigenous people shared knowledge, traditions and histories that remain an essential part of the fabric of the region. Ranchers, immigrants, artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, performers and makers have each added new chapters to our collective story. That story

continues to evolve today through the creative contributions of people from every walk of life.

Into the Forest By Skylar Leeson ›› Long before she knew the term “forest bathing,” Steamboat Springs artist Marion Kahn knew the forest made her feel different. After hiking through evergreens, she would return feeling lighter and more grounded. At first, she thought it was simply the exercise. Over time, she realized something else was happening.

I discovered it before I knew about it.” - Marion Kahn The practice she had unknowingly embraced is Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, a term coined in Japan in 1982. Rather than focusing on exercise or reaching a destination, forest bathing encourages people to slow down and immerse themselves in nature through all five senses. Today, researchers have linked the practice to reduced stress, improved mood, lower blood pressure and even enhanced immune function.

For Marion, the forest became especially important after the loss of her daughter in 2019.

“I would come out of the forest while still in a heavy grieving period, and I would feel better,” she says. She can't fully explain why.

Local artist Suzi Mitchell founded “Wild & Wondrous,” a four-day workshop that combines forest bathing, woodland walks and mixed-media art inspired by the natural world. The focus is on creativity, connection and the process rather than the final product.

Suzi discovered forest bathing while studying art therapy. “I started doing forest bathing and creating afterward in the forest,” she says. “It felt really freeing. Everything you feel in your head and body has a space to come out. And it's not about what you create but the experience of expressing how you feel. Into the Forest continued “There was just a certain power that came from the forest.”

Science may offer part of the answer. Studies have shown that time spent in forests can lower cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone, while helping shift the nervous system into a calmer, restorative state. Researchers have also found that nature exposure can reduce rumination and support emotional well-being.

But Marion doesn't view forest bathing as a formula. For her, it begins with paying attention. She describes a “silent exchange” with the forest, rooted in mindfulness, deep breathing and simple appreciation for beauty.

That connection eventually found its way into her artwork.

Rather than painting a specific landscape, Marion paints the feeling of being immersed in nature.

“Sometimes you're expressing feelings you don't even know you have,” she says.

But when Marion steps back and looks at her artwork as a whole, one theme stands out. “The main thing I see is a lot of joy,” she says.

For those curious about forest bathing, Marion's advice is simple. “The first time, just go do it,” she says. “With an intention to be open.”

For Marion, that openness led to healing, inspired a body of artwork and deepened her connection to the natural world. Years after she first noticed the feeling, she still returns to the forest – not 10 • Volume 20, Edition 1, 2026-2027

to escape life, but to reconnect with it.

›› Just like a painter finds inspiration from his surroundings, Chef Russell Goodman turns to Elkstone Farm’s greenhouses, gardens and storerooms to form the basis of his culinary masterpieces.

What a luxury it must be for a chef to be able to look outside his kitchen window at a plethora of organic options. Fresh greens, as crisp as they are flavorful, are on the menu throughout the year. They are tossed with imaginative dressings, which Chef Russell creates in his farm kitchen. Orange marmalade vinaigrette complemented the salad in July; in October, it could be Elkstone lemons, limes or even figs that add their flavors to the mix.

The kitchen staff looks forward to seasonal offerings. In fall, winter squash comes into play. Apples, pears, beets and kale might be on the menu, too. Then comes the holidays, when the farm is bathed in a blanket of white and decorated like a country kitchen.

Elkstone’s greenhouses comprise citrus trees, peaches, and even a banana tree – which is hardier than one might expect, says owner Terry Huffington, who first envisioned the farm in 2005. Since then, Elkstone has upped the bar locally for fresh, healthy food through community-supported agriculture, farm-to-table dinners, regenerative farming, an organic farmstand, and partnerships with local restaurants and the Community Agricultural Alliance.

Sweet onions formed the basis of the onion tart amuse bouche in July. Following a tender salad of Elkstone greens, Chef served grouper with salsa verde and green tomatoes from the greenhouse. The white fish f laked easily, and was brought to life by delicate spices. Colorado bison tenderloin bourguignon followed, combining tender, mild chunks of meat with homegrown carrots, onions, mushrooms and garlic. A brioche roll, fresh out of the oven, soaked up the rich, f lavorful sauce.

Lemon chess pie, starring juicy lemons from the greenhouse, alongside homemade ice cream and rosemary shortbread mignardises, supplied a sweet finish to the meal.

During summer, farm dinners are served outdoors on the deck, surrounded by an aspen forest with birds chirping in the late afternoon sunshine. Sixteen seats are available; dinners do not include alcohol, although arrangements may be made individually.

In cooler weather, dinner for up to eight guests is served at the Chef ’s Table.

The farm is managed by Marco Lam and his wife, Jamie Furstoss – along with their dog, Nellie Buttercup, who keeps a watchful eye over things. The couple brings considerable expertise to their crops, nurturing them to the peak of ripeness, when Chef Russell takes center stage.

Several times a year, he creates five- to eightcourse dinners, relying on organic produce from the farm, supplemented with Colorado meat and fresh seafood.

Guests sit at the old-fashioned farm table, where they can watch their meals being prepared as evening descends on Strawberry Park. Private dinners can be arranged, but especially during the holidays, advanced planning is a must.

Chef Russell also occasionally oversees oneof-a-kind dinners; he may team up with a visiting chef or sommelier. Cooking classes are on Elkstone Farm’s event schedule, too. And the Record Goes To …

›› While Steamboat Springs’ skiers set records on the slopes, Northwest Colorado has a new claim to fame: world’s largest watercolor. Upon entering the Museum of Northwest Colorado, it's impossible to miss Israel Holloway's "Western Reflections." If the painting seems made for the space it inhabits on the museum’s far wall, that’s because, well – it was.

About a decade ago, amid budget cuts and financial struggles, museum director Paul Knowles spent months campaigning for the museum. When it was finally taken on by the City of Craig on January 1, 2020, he wanted to do something to symbolize the museum’s strength and resilience.

When a Google search led him to an article about the world’s largest watercolor, at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, he found that the current record was 15-by-8-foot. He 16 • Volume 20, Edition 1, 2026-27

rushed to measure the space in his own museum, and, on finding that it was 16 x 10, the seed was planted.

“I wanted to use a local artist and Israel immediately came to mind,” Paul says.

Israel was up for the project. He went down the street from the museum to a saddleshop and asked for a cowboy to get on a horse so that he could use that as a model for his painting. The model was Clint Chew, whose family has been in Moffat County since the early 1900s.

The image that Israel painted depicts Clint with his horse, Arrow, wading through the Yampa River, which runs through his family’s ranch north of Maybell.

As Israel painted, Paul filmed him, posting time lapse videos to the museum’s Facebook page.

This was during Covid, and as people around the world were quarantined, they also tuned in to a tiny corner of Northwest Colorado.

The painting was done in three months. Now, Paul says, people come from all over the country, asking to see the world’s largest watercolor.

“This community has a lot of question marks when we look into the future,” Paul says. “And this painting has really been a bright spot to stare at. To me it's taken on a life of its own and it’s been really fun to watch.” ■ See the painting at the Museum of Northwest Colorado at 590 Yampa Ave. in Craig. 1 ›› Magoo is on the rise. The Denverbased band exploded onto the bluegrass scene less than five years ago; now, they have a packed tour schedule playing shows and festivals across the country.

Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide caught up with upright bass player (and former Ski Town Media employee), Denton Turner.

Denton Turner: Well, it has been a whirlwind for sure, but feels very rewarding. We have all been dedicated to playing music for a very long time and have all played in many bands and projects before this.

So in a way, it feels like a long time coming. To find a group that is dedicated, and a team that is all in a place to give it 100%, is hard – I think we are all grateful to be a part of this. Traveling as much as we are and playing as much as we are is extremely difficult and takes everyone being on the same page to make it work.

YVACG: What do you attribute your quick success to?

D.T.: Hard work, dedication and a shared mindset to go all in.

Giving up your personal life to be on the road and in different towns day in and day out requires a huge commitment and dedication on everyone's behalf.

YVACG: Was there a moment or two when you guys realized that things were moving quickly in terms of being asked to play at bigger and bigger shows?

D.T.: Last year was a very grinding year as far as traveling and playing towns for audiences for the first time. This summer we are really seeing the rewards for the hard work. Now we are seeing bigger audiences and familiar faces wherever we go. Each town we go to, people know the lyrics to our songs and are lined up outside waiting to get in. This summer really feels like things are moving in a successful, exciting direction.

YVACG: What’s a lesson that you’ve learned from the past year on the road?

D.T.: Patience, and the importance of keeping a calm, collected headspace. For me, it's finding time for myself to go for long walks, to get out in nature, and just clear my mind of the stress of travel and being in the van for long hours for weeks at a time.

YVACG: Magoo is known for improv and live jams – has that ever gone in an unexpected direction?

D.T.: Every night it goes in directions we never thought or planned, and I love it that way. I've never wanted to be in a band that does the same thing every night. I like to be challenged and live life without a direct plan so this band gives me that in many ways.

YVACG: Where has been your favorite place to play so far?

D.T.: I've always enjoyed playing for all types of audiences, big or small, stages grand or little. They are all unique. To me it's the energy and vibe of the place and the people. We have had some very memorable shows in backyards, some huge bucket list festival stages, and everything in between. We’ve played in old churches that were turned into venues – those were really cool experiences that I never expected.
