Captain Ali Karn | Super Sailor Though Ali grew up in a sailing family, it wasn’t until the economy began its downward spiral that she gave more thought to the water again. “When The Secret came out, it was talking about visualizing what you want your life to look like. I tore the cover off of a travel catalog and put it on my refrigerator. The magnet that held it up said ‘Dwell in Possibility.’” And on her 35th birthday Ali woke up and refused to leave her bed until she had come up with a plan. “I said alright, I’m going to get my captain’s license.” These days Ali is up and down the East Coast constantly, and depending on the season, can be found racing in the Caribbean (her all-girl team is a winner), teaching newbies through Charleston Sailing School and delivering yachts to new buyers. “The ocean just captures your soul. I will never be on the water with the same people, in the same conditions, in the same boat—it’s always different.” Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach
