Kaetlyn Osmond on roster at annual high performance camp in Mississauga, ON Kaetlyn trained alongside some of Canada’s top figure skaters September 6 -8, 2012 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. This camp provides skaters the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming season.

ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT NEWS & VIEWS As you prepare this fall for Competitions you will be defining your goals for the season.
Tips for S.M.A.R.T.S Goal Setting! SPECIFIC - Leave no room for interpretation. Vague goals are like poor directions - they leave you lost and disoriented. Say exactly what your goal is and write it down. Have someone else read it and explain what they think your goal is. If it does not match what you think that your goal is, clarify it. There is power in commitment. Commit and let your goal(s) be known. MEASURABLE - This is likely the most important part. How do you measure becoming a better skater? Clearly define what that means - and you will likely need to discuss this with your coach and, if possible, an official - so that you know what it will take to get you to accomplish your goals. ACTION-BASED - You know that you want to be a better skater. What specific skills or artistry do you need to improve to achieve that? You want to direct your actions and focus on your goals rather than making a wish. REALISTIC - Make goals that are challenging and yet still reachable in order to motivate you to do the necessary work. Your goals must be valued by you! TIME-SENSITIVE - Establish deadlines to motivate yourself to do what’s needed to accomplish your goals. SUPPORT - Whose help do you need to achieve your goals? Enlist the aid of those who can assist you in identifying and working toward your goals. Telling someone or showing someone your goals will increase your accountability. Making goals that follow these points will immediately start orienting your entire being toward achieving them. S.M.A.R.T.S Goal Setting provided by: Dr. Don Zeman Chair, Athlete Development Committee There are many resources to help us accomplish our goals. Here are a few to get you started: • Do you have a copy of the Canada Food Guide? Good nutrition is important element of being able to train effectively every day. • Remember an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Its also an exceptionally portable snack! • How much green is in your diet? We as professionals in sport often hear “they won’t eat vegetables”. There are inventive ways of incorporating vegetables into your daily meals (Check out Jessica Seinfeld’s Deceptively Delicious cookbook). • Who can help athletes with this? Parents, coaches, teachers and friends are a good place to start.
Recipe - Banana Muffins Makes 1 dozen 3 Large thawed frozen Bananas - mashed ¼ to ½ cup sugar ¾ to 1 cup unsweetened applesauce ¼ cup melted butter/margarine or canola oil 1 tsp. vanilla 1 beaten egg Mix together and put aside. In separate bowl mix next four ingredients:
1 ½ cups of flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. baking powder Pinch of salt Fold wet and dry ingredients together. Spoon into muffin tins and bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Additional ingredients could be bran/blueberries/ chopped nuts/dried apricots or dates.

2012 High River STARSkate Seminar October 7-8, 2012 High River, AB
Cody Hay and Anabelle Langlois were international competitors, World Championships Team members, and members of the 2010 Canadian Olympic Team. Anabelle and Cody were National Team members from 20052008 and became Canadian Pairs Champions in 2008. They missed the 2009 season due to injury and returned in 2010 to represent Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. After competing at Vancouver 2010 they announced their retirement from competition and are pursuing a career in coaching. Register Here

Natasha Purich Natasha Purich and Sebastian Arcieri represented Canada at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Linz, Austria from September 12-16, 2012. Natasha an Sebastien placed tenth overall in Junior Pairs. Thomas Williams Thomas Williams and partner (Nicole Orford) will compete at Rostelecom Cup on November 9-11, 2012 and at the NHK Trophy on November 23-25 2012.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Ron Vincent Coach & Choreographer
Ron Vincent coached at the Royal Glenora Club in Edmonton from 19671970. During his career as a coach, Ron worked with many prominent Alberta figure skaters, many of whom he helped guide to the podium at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships. Following his time in Edmonton, he coached at the Racquet Club of Victoria for ten years. After leaving the Racquet Club he continued to work at the Office of Coaching Development in Vancouver. Former President of the Professional Skaters Association of Canada and Coaching Program Director of the National Coaching Certification Program, Ron was the driving force behind professional certification. For many years Ron was immersed as a co-founder and Artistic Director of the Canada Ice Dance Theatre. His passion for figure skating continues through its ability not only as an athletic event but as an art form. “Inevitably, skating will assert itself as the natural movement art that it is.� Ron currently resides on Galliano Island in British Columbia. Never a person to sit still for very long he is working on a book project based on Coaching in Canada and its influence on Figure Skating. He has asked for input from many prominent Canadian Figure Skating coaches including Elaine (Protheroe) Hume, Don Jackson, Louis Stong, Gordon Linney and Muriel Sheere. Ron is also looking for feedback from Canadian coaches who may like to contribute to the content of the book. If you are interested in contributing, click here for more information.

Leona Boyle, lead instructor and CanSkate Learning Facilitator, will guide program assistants through teaching progressions, warm – ups and cool downs, reinforcing learning skills, leading exercises, drills, games, creative expression, exercises, and circuits. Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut requires clubs/skating schools to provide Program Assistants with appropriate training prior to assisting with the CanSkate program. This training provides an overview of what is expected of Program Assistants and provides them with the skills and support they need to work with skaters in the CanSkate program. This clinic is designed to assist Program Assistants; however, coaches are welcome to attend. THE CANSKATE CONNECTION CanSkate Tips Check out the NEW CanSkate Awards!
Skaters who have partially completed a level can now be rewarded with ribbons. The Stage 1-6 badges remain the same, however for each stage there is a ribbon for the fundamental areas of Balance, Control and Agility. Once all 3 ribbons have been achieved the stage badge is awarded. This new system allows skaters to work at multiple stages for faster progression, retained interest and motivation. There is also a NEW Pre-CanSkate Ribbon for skaters who have completed the 8 skills which are considered pre-requisites for the mainstream CanSkate program. Clubs interested in purchasing the new awards must ensure that all CanSkate coaching staff complete the online CanSkate training module. GET IN SYNC Synchro Coaches… early in the season, a good guideline to follow is to allocate at least half of practice time to skill development such as edges, turns, stroking, and endurance training. Strengthening the athletes’ individual skating skills is a MUST when building a good synchronized skating team! The other half of practice time can be split between synchro team skill development (such as the basics of a circle, line, block, wheel, intersection) and starting program choreography. Would you like to add some excitement to your end of the year Carnival this year?? We are currently looking for a host club within 1 -2 hours of Calgary or Edmonton that would be interested in hosting the 2nd Annual Section Showcase. Your club would have the opportunity to have selected guest skaters perform at your ice show. Your club would be required to purchase the additional ice time necessary to accommodate a minimum of 4 performances of approximately 30 extra minutes. We hope to provide the host club with skaters who have competed well at the Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Sectional Championships from the pre-juvenile up to pre-novice events in women’s singles, men’s singles, pairs and ice dance. We intend for the event to be a win/win for your club and these skaters without causing additional expenses to either party by creating extra excitement for the host club and providing performance opportunities for these developing athletes. If your club is interested in hosting this exciting event which is planned in conjunction with the Parent Resource Sub-Committee and the Athlete Development Committee of Skate Canada Alberta-NWT/ Nunavut please contact Yvonne Wolfe, Parent Resource Sub-Committee Chair, at ywolfe@telus.net no later then November 15, 2012. THE OFFICIALS STAND Musings from a High Test Day Administrator One Year Later Well, my first year as high test admin is over and… Actually it went pretty well, It went as well as I expected? I think it went okay. What went well: • • • • •
Thanks so much for all your support when my “call for evaluators” went out. So many of you were prompt to reply yes or no. (I really appreciated the no answers as well so I know who not to bother because they had other commitments.) Thanks to those evaluators who couldn’t make the dates asked by the clubs but offered other days in lieu, when they were available. Thanks to the clubs who were able to work with the days in lieu situations. The calendars and the dates overview documents seemed to work well when planning availability. Had one region’s clubs work together and planned a high test day every month at a different club. Skaters had the opportunity to attend a high test day every month in their region. Had two large test days that no one from our Section was able to attend. Thanks to our neighbours to the east who pitched in and helped us out.
Challenges faced by the Test Day Administrator: •
• • • • •
Low to high test days. One region had almost all the clubs apply for low-high tests days. Some clubs only had 3 hours of ice? Perhaps they had 2 hours of high tests and 1 hour of low tests. When I receive the applications I’m assuming that the times sent with the request are for high tests only. Therefore, if a club states that they want a high test day on December 1 and have ice from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, I am assuming that all other clubs in the region and beyond can apply to come to that test day because there is 8 hours of ice to fill with high tests. Once the closing date has passed they can complete their schedule with low tests if they have ice to fill. In addition if they have 8 hours of high tests I will need to find 2 to 3 evaluators for that day. Solution- in What to work on (below). Had a couple of clubs not accept other club’s tests at their test days. They were allowed their limit of one club only test days and had their skaters go elsewhere if necessary. Worked well for the club however I would much rather see clubs working together for high test days. Had one club that did not attend the test day planning sessions or the centralized test days in their region. They didn’t have the required number of hours of high tests to have their own test day and noted that they always had to send their skaters out of region. Week day, daytime only ice. Because the majority of our evaluators work full time, this presents a challenge. Still a few clubs not sending in the summary sheets in a timely manner. About summary sheets please remember: one to National Office; one to Section Statistician; one to other clubs if test day is multiple clubs AND if you are the host, of a multi club test day, keep a copy of all the summary sheets, even the other club’s, for your records.
What to work on for next season (accepting suggestions for this section): •

Getting the coaches to go through their club high test coordinators to send tests to other clubs tests days. It makes the process much easier for the test day scheduler and then makes sure that the skaters have their clubs’ permission to test at another club. Yes, it’s true, if you are taking a test at a club other than your home club you are required to submit a permission granted letter from your club. Getting more Regions to try one high regionalized test day per month in a region. Hosted by a different club every month. Would only need 4 to 6 high test evaluators one to two days per month. Keep the current calendar and dates overview documents updated with the Section Office. Keeping my head above water for another season.

Trained volunteers, who bring their own expertise in board governance, lead the workshops. Workshop locations are chosen by the organizations, with instructors traveling to communities throughout Alberta. Instructors use a “hands on” approach to give board members opportunities to apply new ideas, evaluate current situations, and develop plans. Each workshop is customized to meet the needs of the individual board. Specifically, Board Development Program workshops assist board members to:
Understand the legal and ethical responsibilities of board membership
Understand roles, responsibilities, and functions of board members, staff, service volunteers, and committees within the organization
Develop policy to monitor the organization and to make effective and consistent decisions
Recruit, orient, and train new board members
Develop their board leadership qualities
Develop an effective board/staff relationship
Build a strong board team
What is the Board Development Program? The Board Development Program (BDP) provides workshops, consultative services, and resource materials to assist the boards of not-for-profit organizations. It is sponsored by Alberta Culture & Community Spirit and Grant MacEwan University. The Board Development Program works in partnership with boards of not-for-profit organizations that are interested in developing their board’s leadership skills.
Our training dates are: November 17 or November 18, 2012 November 30, December 1, & 2, 2012 January 12 & 13, 2013 February 9 & 10 or February 23 & 24, 2013 Please check your calendar to ensure that you are available for ALL dates 24

Packages include: Junior & Novice Championship Package includes the junior and novice level practices and competitions taking place January 14-17, 2013. Brynn strated skating at the age of 7, and at the age of 15 has completed her Gold skating skills. She is currently working on her Gold dances and Senior Silver freeskate She is always willing to demonstrate jumps and spins to other skaters, and is the first to assist skaters when they require help or words of encouragement. She is actively involved in the planning of CanSkate classes and ice shows, and is a natural leader who is respectful of other skaters, coaches, parents and volunteers both on and off the ice.

About Us: The Whitecourt FSC is a busy and successful rural club with ice 6 days a week. We currently offer a CanSkate thru to STARSkate programs, with a consistent high passing rate. We strive to follow the Skate Canada Guidelines and our members are proud to have successfully hosted STARSkate 2012 this past season. We offer programs for Freeskate, Dance, Skills and Interpretive, and require all skaters to participate in a balance of disciplines. We are in need of 2 full time coaches, but will consider all applications and availability. Sharing with a surrounding club is also a consideration.
