2012 SEASON OUTLOOK The Saint Joseph’s men's soccer team will bid farewell to preseason workouts and summer camps on August 24 when it welcomes Hartwick to Finnesey Field to open up the 2012 season. Returning just two seniors, the team will be the youngest in the Atlantic 10 conference. However, with the return of 18 sophomores and juniors combined, the Hawks, under the direction of third-year head coach Don D'Ambra, will look to mesh an abundance of young talent with a solid core of experience. "The overall fitness level and strength of the team has made very good improvements, and our staff and players are so excited to get started this season," said D'Ambra. "Our younger players have matured both physically and mentally, which should translate to better execution on the field. Our team has dramatically improved in its tactical sense of the game, which makes things much easier when competing." Leading the Hawks will be a veteran core of tri-captains. Seniors Tim Brennan and Andrew D'Ottavi and junior Pat McGlynn demonstrate the commitment, devotion, and work ethic that it will take to lead this young team to victory. As a 2011 Atlantic 10 All-Academic selection, Brennan will serve as a leader on the defensive end. Referred to by D'Ambra as "one of the most consistent players on the field," the threeyear starter has played in all 51 games over the course of his past three seasons at Hawk Hill while starting 48 times. In the past two seasons, Brennan played a defensive role as an outside back, and the coaching staff appreciates his dedicated ability to be an all-around player. "He is versatile and may see some time as a defensive midfielder," said D'Ambra. "He leads by example and has an excellent work ethic. Returning the top five scorers from last season, SJU will look to build on the foundation that these players have created. Sophomore forward Alex Critzos returns to the team as last season's leading goal scorer, having been extremely opportunistic with his chances. His knowledge of the game will have a profound effect on the Hawks offense this season.

Senior captain Tim Brennan

Junior midfielder Pat McGlynn “Alex has learned a lot in the past year," says D'Ambra of his offensive standout. "We are excited about his potential." Critzos and sophomore midfielder Jake Nelson combined for 16 points last season, contributing eight points apiece. Nelson netted three goals and tallied two assists in his freshman campaign as a Hawk, and he started in all 17 games. According to D'Ambra, Nelson and sophomore forward Mike Glazer were "solid players for the team last year who have made very good improvements in the off season." Glazer started 16 of his 17 total games played last season and led the team with 26 shot attempts. "We expect good things from them," D'Ambra adds of his hard-working trio of sophomores as the Hawks will look to continue progress on the offensive side of the ball. Rounding out the offense will be junior forward Ryan McFadden, who played in 14 games last season and had an assist in an SJU win over Army. Third-year starter McGlynn will lead the charge at midfield. McGlynn has proved himself an asset to the team, recording three points, one goal, and one assist in each of his first two seasons at Saint Joseph's while starting all 34 games. Paired with the seniors, D'Ambra credits McGlynn for his consistency in both a devoted work ethic and solid leadership qualities, stating, "Pat is a starting midfielder who has shown to provide good energy and is very active on the field." Junior Jimmy Reilly is also back from last year's squad having shown an undeniable competitive edge in 16 games. Sophomores Michael Rumel and Edward D’Amelio and freshmen Tim Lazorko, Adam Wissner, and Luke Rosescu will compete for minutes in the midfield to help round out a potentially dangerous and efficient offense. .In reference to his freshmen midfielders, Coach D'Ambra states, "Timmy is a well-rounded player who can defend and attack. Adam has a good sense of the game, works hard, and will be solid defensively, and Luke is a crafty and skillful play maker that will bring creativity to our team."

2012 SEASON OUTLOOK Although veterans return to the Hawk attack with an abundance of talent and experience, D'Ambra spent the offseason addressing the needs on the offensive end by focusing on replenishment through the addition of more offensive depth. Ryan Kelly is a transfer forward from Marshall University that brings intensity and urgency to make plays on the field. "Ryan played with us in the spring and did a nice job of creating scoring chances in the offensive third," said D'Ambra. Freshmen forwards Emmanuel Temeh and Mike Serban add speed and raw talent to an offense that began to see an increase in production last year. D'Ambra appreciates that the quick and athletic Temeh is "eager to learn and is excited to be a part of the program" and acknowledges his potential and good sense around the goal. Serban's strength, athleticism, and strong desire to score goals will stand out during his freshman campaign. Joining Brennan on the defensive end will be junior Brendan Reilly, whose hard-nosed style of play proved to be an integral part of last season. A defensive starter yet offensive threat, the 2011 Soccer Six Player of the Week selection was responsible for burying the game-winning goal in an overtime victory at St. Bonaventure, locking up the Hawk's second victory of 2011. Sophomore Tommy Brooks returns as a starter on defense having shown a real sense of grit and relentless work ethic throughout the progression of his freshman season. Brooks earned his way to become a starting player for the team as he went through a transition from a defensive midfielder in the fall to a central defensive role this past spring. "Tommy is versatile tactically so we look to plan to use him in a couple different positions," added D'Ambra of his sophomore defender. A second sophomore trio of Dylan Andrews, Josh Edgar, and Brandon Stevis will help bolster the defense. These Hawk defenders have made large improvements working on their game from just a season ago and will contribute on the defensive back line "Dylan, Josh, and Brandan have made steady improvements in the off-season," D'Ambra explained, "and I expect these players to compete for starting positions or more significant playing time." Also in the mix for the defense is Jake Mulinge, a transfer defender from FDU whose athleticism and speed will allow him to compete for significant playing time as well as bring additional experience to the team. A trio of junior veterans in thirdyear players Colin Reilly, Brian Reynolds, and Connor Widerman will round out the defense. "Defensively, we have a very intelligent back line," praised D'Ambra, "and hopefully they can establish a cohesiveness with one another."

Senior goalkeeper Andrew D’Ottavi

At the reigns of the defense in goal this season will be none other than the team's 2011 Most Outstanding Player: D'Ottavi. The veteran returns for his third season in the net for the Hawks. D'Ottavi made a mark in Atlantic 10 standings last season as he ranked second in the conference in saves (95) and third in saves per game (6.33) while his contribution to a team total 113 saves helped to rank SJU third in the A10 in the category of total saves. The senior goalkeeper will be a key part to the team's success, and D'Ambra believes that his senior's dedicated mentality will pave the way for this young Hawk squad. "It's Andrew's positive attitude and strong work ethic that make him a captain. His steady play has made an impact on several games for us," said D'Ambra. Juniors Michael Moulton and Sam Pozzessere will back up D'Ottavi in goal this season. Moulton made three starts in 2011 while posting a 3.60 goals against average to go with 16 saves on the year. After a tough season in 2011, Coach D'Ambra will look for contributions from everyone, from his enthusiastic, willing-tolearn freshmen to his experienced, knowledgable veteran seniors along with the core group of talented juniors and sophomores in between. From the coaching staff to the players, the Hawks look forward to the opportunities that will present themselves along the way of another Saint Joseph's men's soccer season. "We are very excited with our players' potential and look to see good things from them this upcoming season," said D'Ambra.

HEAD COACH Don D’Ambra Head Coach Third Year

Don D'Ambra enters his third season as the head men's soccer coach at Saint Joseph's. One of the most decorated former SJU student-athletes to be named a head coach on Hawk Hill, D'Ambra was introduced as the fourth head coach in the program's history on April 15, 2010. In his first two seasons at SJU, he has led the Hawks to an overall record of 4-30-0 and 2-16-0 in the Atlantic 10, as they snapped a 24-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Iona and won their first conference match since 2008 in a 2-0 victory over Rhode Island in his first season. D'Ambra returned to Saint Joseph's in 2010 after a successful coaching and playing career with the Philadelphia KiXX of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He played a total of 16 seasons in the MISL, the last 14 with the KiXX. In 2002, he assumed duties as the head coach of the KiXX and served as vice president of soccer operations/head coach while continuing his playing career. D'Ambra helped the KiXX to two MISL championships, as a player in 2001 and as the player/coach in 2007. He was a four-time all-star and is the KiXX' all-time leading scorer, amassing 388 goals and 905 points. In eight seasons as head coach, he totaled 119 wins, which is the most in the team's history. While at Saint Joseph's from 1990-93, he was a Regional All-America First Team selection and remains the only player in Hawk history to earn the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year award, winning it in 1993. D'Ambra holds the SJU career records for goals (41) and points (102), as well as the marks for goals (15) and points (38) in a season (1993). He was inducted into the school's Men's Soccer Hall of Fame in 2000. "We are pleased and honored to welcome back Don D'Ambra as our new head men's soccer coach,” said Director of Athletics Don DiJulia upon D’Ambra’s appointment. “Don is committed to the SJU mission to enhance the overall student-athlete experience. Don's passion and commitment to excel will encourage the success of our student-athletes and the soccer program from its solid foundation built by his predecessors. He brings energy and a vision for the future of the Hawk soccer program. Don made us proud during his playing days here and no doubt will make us even more proud during his tenure as our head coach." D'Ambra has his USSF "A" coaching license and has been involved with coaching youth teams, conducting coaching clinics and organizing skills and development programs for over 14 years. He possesses international playing experience, having been a member of the United States National Futsal Team since 2002. With 15 international caps, D'Ambra has participated in the World Championships and the Pan American Games. D'Ambra replaced Tom Turner, who retired after 23 seasons as the Hawks' head coach, and had been an assistant coach on Turner's staff at SJU from 1996-99. A native of Philadelphia, D'Ambra attended North Catholic High School and graduated from Saint Joseph's in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in food marketing. D'Ambra and his wife, Leslie, have three daughters, Samantha, Kylie and Milana.

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 57 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

FINNESEY FIELD Finnesey Field has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University as it enters its 84th year. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over a thousand SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The most recent upgrade happened in the summer of 2008 as the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Home to the men’s and women’s soccer teams, men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, the field has seen other modifications done to it since its inception in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000seat bowled stadium for football was dashed when the sport was discontinued following the 1939 season. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey home until 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand as well as the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium.

2012 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 21

2011 YEAR IN REVIEW After a tough 2010 campaign in his first season, Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer coach Don D’Ambra accepted that 2011 was going to be a rebuilding year for his group. With more than a dozen freshmen and sophomores playing regularly, the Hawks finished 2-15-0 and 1-8-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Senior and two-time captain Tom Smart led the Hawks with his gritty play in the midfield in all 17 starts, while junior Andrew D’Ottavi started 13 games in net and posted two shutouts. Two pleasant surprises came by way of freshmen Alex Critzos and Jake Nelson. Critzos saw action in 16 games as he started 13 of them. Taking advantage of his opportunity, he led the club with four goals and tied for the team lead in points with eight. Nelson went on to become a mainstay in the midfield as he started all 17 games. His three goals and two assists marked him a threat to opposing teams. Sophomore Brendan Reilly and freshman Tommy Brooks also made an impact for the Hawks throughout the season. Their aggressive play tabbed them as fierce defenders while they also contributed on the offensive end. Reilly netted two goals on the season and Brooks chipped in adding two assists. The team began the season in Philadelphia as it dropped two games, one to Detroit on Finnesey Field and the other at city rival Penn. Saint Joseph’s snapped its early two-game losing skid when it traveled up to West Point, N.Y., to take on Army. Goals by Tyler Levengood, Critzos and shutout goalkeeping from D’Ottavi allowed the Hawks to grab their first win, 2-0. SJU then entered a tough stretch of five games where it lost four by a single goal before beginning conference play.

ATLANTIC 10 ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE: Tim Brennan

SOCCER SIX PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brendan Reilly (10/30) SOCCER SIX ALL-STAR TEAM: Tom Smart

Tom Smart was selected to his second Soccer Six All-Star team in 2011, marking the 20th consecutive season a Hawk has been chosen to the team.

After a loss at George Washington to kick off A-10 play, the men stayed on the road to face Richmond two days later. The Hawks would jump out to an early two-goal lead as Critzos and fellow freshman Nelson got Saint Joseph’s on the board. The Spiders came back with two of their own in the second, sending play into extra time where they ended a 35-minute scoring drought with the game winner off of a rebound. The team returned home after the heart-breaking loss to start a three-game home stand where it fell to Temple, Dayton and Xavier. The Hawks regrouped and made the trip up to St. Bonaventure to take on the Bonnies. After 90 minutes of scoreless play by both clubs, action carried over into extra time. Five minutes into overtime, Reilly struck a free kick from 30 yards out through a wall that found the inside of the left post to give SJU its second win of the year, 1-0. For his efforts, Reilly earned the Soccer Six Player of the Week award. Saint Joseph’s would go on to close out the season with three losses, including a senior day where all four seniors – Nico Galati, Jake McPaul, Greg Rom and Tom Smart - were individually honored. Despite the number of one-goal losses, the young Hawks gained valuable experience through a great deal of action on the field. D’Ambra expects that the growth and development of this year’s bunch will lead to a confident, more competitive club in 2012 and a run at an A-10 Tournament berth.

Legendary Jack Dunn, the first-ever coach of the Saint Joseph’s soccer team, has done more for the Hawk program than any one individual. The team’s head coach from 1958 through 1975, Dunn compiled a career record of 120-57-23 (.658) in his 18 years at the helm, leading SJU to the NCAA Tournament in 1966, 1971 and 1972. Dunn played on the 1952 U.S. Olympic team and went on to a long playing career in the old GermanAmerican Professional League. Dunn, who also served as an assistant coach with the Hawks in the mid-90s, was one of 20 inaugural inductees to the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,650 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, pro-

fessional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
