AL DEVER ’54 Al Dever ’54 came to the Prep kind of by accident but the impact the school made on him has lasted a lifetime. “There was a grade school teacher who wasn’t encouraging me to take the test so I did it to spite her a little,” Dever says with a laugh. “But when my father, the son of Irish immigrants who hadn’t gone beyond 8th grade, found out that his oldest son had gotten into the Prep, he was so proud a tear came to his eye. I knew then that I couldn’t let him down.” That accident was the beginning of a Prep legacy. A brother followed him there a few years later and then two sons, two grandchildren, five nephews and a cousin. In fact, Dever’s son Patrick ’85 and grandson Patrick ’17 were both voted Presidents of their Class, a rare accomplishment.

CLASS OF 55 - 21% “I owe the major benefits of my life to the Prep,” says Dever. He and his wife Margaret are longtime, generous benefactors of the school. “Because I went to the Prep, my life is better than if I had gone somewhere else. That’s an absolute fact. I want to help give other boys the chance to have that experience as well.” Dever says that, in addition to the school’s academic rigor, it’s the atmosphere that makes the Prep different. “I always say that’s the pull factor and the push factor,” he says. “The academics pull a student up higher than he was before and the student body, because it’s so superior, pushed them to do more.”
