Tool-Room Manager turns steam dream into a 4.5-tonne reality

Ellis Patents’ Tool-Room Manager, Mark Angus likes to think big in his spare time. His hobby? Building steam engines in his backyard.

Over the last eight years Mark’s been working on a full-scale replica of a Foster steam engine, which was originally built by William Foster & Co in Lincoln in the early 20th century. The end result is a 4.5-tonne, fully functioning replica that has been registered by the DVLA meaning it can be driven on the road.

Mark said: “I’ve been fascinated by steam engines ever since I was at school, and building them was something I day-dreamed about when everyone else in my class was undoubtedly dreaming of scoring the winning goal in the Cup Final at Wembley.”

“Sensibly, I started small, building four miniature engines before stepping up to a 6” scale model of a McLaren traction engine that I finished in 2014. When that was achieved, I think my family hoped that would be the end of my obsession but I already had the Foster in mind.”

With the exception of drawings and the engine’s boiler, Mark did the entire build at home, including machining all the castings and components. His daughters, Tilly and Jessica helped out with the work and are commemorated on a plaque on the engine that reads “M Angus & Daughters Engineers.”

Knightsbridge goes full tilt with configurable LED downlights

Knightsbridge has taken the next step in its lighting evolution with the inclusion of SpektroLED Tilt to the configurable Knightsbridge SpektroLED series.

SpektroLED offers so many combinations of wattage, colour temperature and bezel choice that the product provides a genuine 40-in-one fire-rated downlighting solution, now in both fixed and tilt versions.

With the introduction of SpektroLED, Knightsbridge has removed the limitations of traditional downlights, offering versatility, performance and style in one unique package, and allowing for customisation and personalisation of lighting design without resorting to multiple lamp types.

The new SpektroLED Tilt variant increases the options again. Like the fixed model, SpektroLED Tilt offers a choice of two wattages – 5W and 8W – five colour temperatures (CCTs) and five bezel finishes, from white and matte black to chrome, polished chrome and brass; resulting in 40 different style and performance permutations.

The wattages and CCTs are switch-selected on the rear of the downlight body. At 5W, SpektroLED delivers up to 465 lumens and up to 795 lumens at 8W.

Once installed, SpektroLED will give 50,000 hours of rated LED life and can be used with most leading and trailing-edge dimmers though compatibility should be verified beforehand. A five-year warranty guarantees peace of mind.

Unicrimp adds Metal Cable Cleats to Q-Fire range

Unicrimp has added a range of Metal Cable Cleats to its growing Q-Fire portfolio of fire-rated cable accessory products.

The new Metal Cable Cleats meet BS 7671 (18th Edition) requirements and are designed to prevent cables from premature collapse during a fire and in doing so, to keep emergency services and the public safe.

The 18th Edition wiring regulations stipulate that cable support systems must be constructed with materials that will withstand premature collapse caused by direct exposure to heat. There are no applications excluded – trunking, conduit and cabling fixed to surfaces of the building or attached to cable support systems must all have fire-resistant supports in place.

Unicrimp’s fire-rated black Metal Cable Cleats are available in 14 different size options suitable for cable sizes from 5mm up to 50mm. The key feature of the product is an oval fixing hole which allows for cable diameter tolerances. To install the metal cable cleat, the electrician just needs to bend the cleat around the cable and fix in place to the designated wall.

Hitachi Energy showcases the world’s first eco-efficient 420-kilovolt circuit-breaker at CIGRE Session 2022 in Paris

Hitachi Energy has unveiled the world’s first eco-efficient 420-kilovolt (kV) circuit-breaker in conjunction with CIGRE Session 2022.

This breakthrough technology marks a significant milestone in its accelerated EconiQ high-voltage portfolio roadmap that was announced at CIGRE Session 2021.

For over two decades, the company has been investing in eco-efficient alternative solutions to sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) including the world’s first 170 kV eco-efficient gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). The EconiQ high-voltage portfolio uses a game-changing technology that eliminates sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), a greenhouse gas. Over time, it has been successful in continuously increasing the voltage levels of its EconiQ high-voltage portfolio.

Today, the EconiQ 420 kV circuit-breaker marks a key milestone in the industry to transmit large amounts of electricity over long distances while eliminating significant volumes of SF6.

This innovation is the key enabler to achieving a wide range of EconiQ switchgear applications, and will be used in both dead tank breaker (DTB) and gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). The EconiQ DTB and GIS are expected to be released at the end of 2022, on track with the company’s roadmap.

Transport for London banks on Ellis Patents’ cable hangers

Transport for London (TfL) has installed Ellis Patents’ innovative Pegasus cable hangers in its £500 million Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project.

Specified through the North Yorkshire manufacturer’s UK distributor, ETS Cable Components, the hangers were chosen because their modular design meant they could be manufactured to the project’s very specific requirements.

As with all of its products, Pegasus was designed and developed completely in-house by Ellis Patents. Featuring an aluminium spine that can support any number and configuration of polymer cable hangers, the modular cable hanging system is not only more adaptable than similar products, it’s also stronger and lighter; making it quick and easy to install. Ellis Patents manufactures Pegasus cable hangers using LUL approved materials, which are suitable for installation underground and within tunnels, as well as UV stabilised materials for installations above ground and trackside.

The Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project was aimed at relieving heavy passenger congestion during peak hours and has seen the construction of a new southbound platform tunnel and associated length of running tunnel for the Northern line. It also incorporated the construction of connecting passageways to the existing station tunnels and the provision of step-free access from King William Street. It is due to be complete and fully operational in the autumn.

OMICRON launches ADMO 6.10 and InSight 3.10

OMICRON has launched new versions of ADMO and Insight, software that is designed for central planning and management of all engineering, testing and maintenance activities, and data in the power automation and control industry.

With the software versions of ADMO 6.10 and Insight 3.1, new functions and improvements have been implemented. The most important of these are:

Custom Event Types in ADMO 6.1

Now users can specify up to 36 individual event types. The former standard event types Commissioning, Maintenance and Miscellaneous may continue to be used or, if preferred, these types can be deleted. The order of event types can be adjusted in the Event Configuration dialog and in the dialog that appears when adding a new event.

Asset definition and configuration in ADMO 6.1

The definition and configuration of assets has been completely revised. All available categories can now be assigned to any asset.

New Asset Type Data widget in InSight 3.1

The new Asset Type Data widget lets users visualise additional custom data fields and asset type specific metadata that are currently not part of the ADMO data grid, such as custom data fields and asset type specific meta data.
