Community Christian School School can be tough, whether it be times-tables in elementary school or geometric proofs in high school. For those “outside the box” learners like Madison and Jacob, school brings extra challenges. Thanks to programs like CCS’s Student Support Services, and educators like Mrs. Rebecca Brooks and her team, many more students and parents can breathe a sigh of relief. Says Jacob’s mom, “Through CCS, you will find a group of people who genuinely love your child and will work their hardest to help them be successful to overcome the challenges they have been blessed with. They teach them lessons they can take with them for the rest of their lives, shape them as adults, and build character . . .” page 4

Publisher’s Letter The Challenge and Beauty of Change

A

bout 6 months ago I was having a really hard time with the changes that were headed into my life. They say change is never easy and this is very true. We are resistant to change because change takes away what is known. And in my case, what I have known for the last 18 years will never be the same. My only child, Cole, was preparing to graduate from Strong Rock Christian School. We had gotten through the ACT and had the grades he needed to get into his college of choice, Kennesaw State University. I say “we” because as most parents know, getting everything together for college is something we must assist in from the day they are born. From choosing Pre-K to extra-curricular activities, to tutoring to projects, car pools to team sports. Children rely heavily on their parents to help them to achieve and succeed. And as parents we are there, sacrificing our own wants and needs to make sure they have everything they need. And then one day you realize, in very short order, they will not need you like that for much longer and it absolutely stops you in your tracks. You go from being needed in every way to being needed from a distant. Your heart hurts with an emptiness and yet swells with an immeasurable pride. Now that we are at that point and finals are taken, parties and celebrations have been had and the ceremonial “walk” at graduation has happened, the anxiety of the changes that were too come are gone and the peace in knowing all the sacrifices, all of the choices, everything was worth it all to get it here. Everything I have ever done has been for my son to get to this point and I owe a great deal of our journey to Southern Journal Magazine. SJM

Luxury at the Loews A Diamond Destination in the Heart of Famed Miami Beach

By: Lisa Kinchen Photos: Courtesy of The Loews Miami Beach Hotel

A

hhh, Miami—what is there to say about sexy Miami? It’s glamorous. It’s fun. It has nearly perfect summer weather all year round. It’s both the ultimate Spring Break destination and a popular city for lovers, friends and families to indulge in art, culture, and with the rise of stellar restaurants over the past decade, some delicious food. Its towering city skyline only rivals its two miles of sprawling, soft, golden-sand beaches. And with all its attributes, Miami is where celebrities like the Kardashians, Madonna and Snoop Dogg like to visit… and Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull love to call home. In short, in Miami, anything can happen. (After all, they don’t call it “the Magic City” for nothing.) And right in the heart of one of its trendiest areas, Miami Beach, is one hard-to-miss Miami gem: the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. Recognized for its majestic steeple-like rooftop,

its hotel-within-a-hotel—the St. Moritz, which has been fully restored to its Art Deco splendor—and at 681,659 square feet (this is the total of both buildings and the pool deck combined), for being one of the largest hotels on Collins Avenue, this Art Deco treasure is the mainstay of choice for elite travelers and Miami’s finest alike. Confirming its reputation as a must-do spot, it effortlessly plays host to some of the most iconic events in town. Don’t believe us? Just ask anyone who’s ever been. The Loews Miami Beach Hotel is the official headquarters for the South Beach Wine and Food Festival each year, and it was even the hotel of choice for the ABC hit reality show, The Bachelor Season 18, when it came through Miami. Now on the heels of a $50M renovation, the newly redesigned Loews Miami Beach Hotel is bigger and better than ever. When future travelers book their stay there, they’ll notice June / july 2017

page 13

Cover Story more than just the 790 upgraded guestrooms. In fact, the reimagined lobby dazzles, the food is tastier than ever, the poolscape shines with a new oceanfront watering hole surrounded by private, adults-only St. Tropezinspired cabanas, and when adults want to hit that pool and have some “alone time,” there’s a new state-of- the art Kids Club where the little ones can play, too. And despite these sparkling amenities, the new guestrooms aren’t to be overlooked. Inspired by the ocean just outside, each updated room has been transformed into a traveler’s personal oasis. Equal parts sophisticated and relaxed, they’re the perfect respite after a long day immersing yourself in sunny South Beach. In the main building, the beds are luxurious, the technology is ultra-modern (think Smart TVs in every room), and the views are, well… excellent. You can relax with fanciful vistas of Collins Avenue, the Miami Beach skyline, or of course, the crashing waves of the deep blue Atlantic. In the St. Moritz tower, step that ultra-luxury up a notch with a boutique hotel experience that promises to fit your every need In fact, throughout the property, the Loews Miami Beach Hotel cherishes its bespoke art experience. Whether you’re walking through the lobby or sleeping in your room, look around; you’ll find headboards with interesting designs, vibrantly-colored carpets and a mix of multi-media, sculptural and mural art by famed artists and curators Sarah Raskey, Derek Gores and the leading art marketplace, Indiewalls. With rooms this beautiful, we wouldn’t be surprised if you never want to leave them. But you have to—at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, there’s too much to see, do and eat to stay in bed. When it’s time for breakfast, wake up and head downstairs to Preston’s Market, at the lobby level, for a buffet of American farm-to-table fare with a Latin twist. Catering to what’s both hearty and healthy, this good-for-you good breakfast lets diners graze through tables of fresh fruit, cereals, made-toorder omelets, fresh-baked pastries, a charcuterie board, a mini donut station, imported cheeses, and a local favorite, Zak the Baker breads. If a full breakfast doesn’t do it for you, stop by Miami Joe Coffee Co., page 14

which is open all day long, and grab a cup of hot Starbucks or cold-brew Panther Coffee from the nearby Wynwood Arts District and a pastry. If you’re still hungry later, come back to Miami Joe and order a sandwich; they’re made in-house daily and promise to leave you feeling full and happy. At night, the food and drink scene at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel doesn’t disappoint. Before dinner, belly up to Bar Collins for a Flamingo Mojito—a mix of Miami Club Rum, watermelon juice, ginger syrup and mint—by none other than Julio Cabrera, one of Miami’s top mixologists and GQ Magazine’s “Most Imaginative Bartender in America.” And when you’re done with one legend, move on to the next: Chef Josh Capon, of Lure Fishbar, a haute yacht-inspired seafood spot that can only be found here and at its flagship location, in NYC’s SoHo neighborhood. Helming the kitchen in both cities, Chef Josh prides himself on playing to the bare-bone

flavor of any dish he creates. Using as few ingredients as possible, with only the highestquality, fresh-caught fare, he still manages to throw in a modern, upscale twist. Take the Grilled Whole Daurade, for example (a fan favorite!). This petite silver fish is served in full, from head to tail, with nothing more than watercress, charred lemon and Italian Agrodolce. Other dishes to look out for are the Lure House Roll, a sushi roll with shrimp tempura and spicy Tuna, and for dessert, Ice Cream Sandwiches. Furthering Chef Capon’s commitment to adding intrigue to otherwise simple, down-to-earth dishes, this dessert stuffs homemade cookies with seasonal, homemade ice cream, like Milk N’ Cookies, Ginger Snap, or in the fall, Pumpkin Spice. And when you’re not eating or sleeping, there are plenty of ways to stay entertained at the Loews. For some A-list pampering, head to the hotel’s Exhale Spa, in the St. Moritz Tower, for a “True” facial designed to detox, purify

and soothe your skin. If it’s the sun you crave, head to the beach or grab a SOAK Cabana by the hotel’s whimsical, seemingly endless pool deck. With rooftop sundecks, personal butlers, oversized daybeds, flat screen TVs, a full marble bathroom with a glass shower, air conditioning, and a specialized menu with frozen fruit treats, fruit smoothie shots and more, this cabana makes it hard to believe you’re even still poolside. Finally, because the Loews sits right on Collins Avenue, stepping outside to explore Miami Beach is always a solid option. In fact, walk out to the driveway, by the valet stand, and take your pick: in the heart of South Beach, shopping, bars, restaurant—and as always in the Magic City, people-watching—abound. “I

stopped my whole life when Ava Grace was diagnosed with autism.” Trina Ward refused to believe that genetics had dealt this hand to her beautiful child. She chose instead to be proactive in the recovery of her daughter. “I had been asking my doctors since she was 9 months old, because she was a real handful. She looked right through you, and was out of control like a spinning top. I wasn’t concerned about who to blame at that time, I was just laser focused on my daughter’s recovery.” Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is that group of developmental disorders that range from Autism to Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). Ava was finally diagnosed in October of 2001, Trina sighed, “It was a terrible and bittersweet confirmation. I now had proof - that I was not a horrible mom and she was not a bad child. But my child had autism. We took her to Emory’s Autism Research Center and to the Children’s Habilitation Center of Atlanta where her diagnosis was further confirmed.

page 18

SOUTHERNJOURNALMAGAZINE.COM

On the way to Ava’s initial test appointment Trina’s husband, Neal said “After this appointment, I never want to hear the word “Autism,” again. During Ava Grace’s testing phase, her parents watched through a two way mirror, agonizing for their child. “It was gut-wrenching to see her fail basic test after test.” Neal turned to Trina, “You start researching everything immediately. We are not going to stop until we get her out of this.” After research, massive prayer, and the wise counsel of a new friend with an autistic son, the Wards chose to treat their daughter’s autism as a biomedical illness instead of a chance genetic occurrence. They began with a strict gluten free/casein (milk) free and periodically yeast-free diet and lifestyle. Jacquelyn McCandless, MD, authored the book, “Children with Starving Brains,” which explains that many autistic children have an inability to digest wheat or milk. Those indigestible proteins enter the bloodstream and then act as opioids on the brain – which may be why autistic children appear spaced out or blank.1 Trina and Neal didn’t try to phase in the modifications, “We just did it. I went in and cleaned out my kitchen in one weekend

to begin a gluten and casein free lifestyle. And we started ABA – Lovaas Applied Behavioral Analysis 40 hours per week. We worked to detoxify her system and rebuild her immune system.” Trina remembers, “My heart broke for her, and the loneliness and isolation was extremely hard on me. I was never suicidal, but I often thought my heart had reached it’s limit of ache, hurt and indescribable pain; that God could just stop my heart and bring me home early. I could be okay with that. It turned out that He only gave me as much as I could handle. He turned my nightmare into a beautiful message of faith and hope and never ending love.” Today, Ava Grace is a healthy, happy 18 year old. Trina beamed, “She leads a healthy, happy, full life, and is completely recovered from this vaccine injury known as autism. She is a senior in high school. She has a beautiful, blessed life, surrounded by wonderful friends. Her amazing family includes a precious younger sister (who drives her crazy, and is her biggest fan). Neal and I never gave up, and we never looked back.” We have a wonderful life with highs and lows, mountains and valleys. We never stop praying and always have faith in God. We hope by sharing our journey we can help another family or child to keep their faith.” 1 McCandless, MD, “Children with Starving Brains, A Medical Treatment Guide for Autism Spectrum Disorder,” 2nd Ed., 2003 Bramble Books, Chapter, Causation Models June / july 2017

ABC’s The Bachelor was filmed on location at this premier luxury resort where the rooftop infinity pool offers a stunning 360-degree view of Bimini Bay. The pristine waters beckon temptingly. Resorts World Bimini offers white sand beaches where guests enjoy glass bottomed kayaks, banana boats, and jet skiing. Other sun and sand activities include lazing in an ocean hammock, paddle boating, or water bikes. Unique to Bimini is a snorkeler’s delight: the shipwreck of the historic S.S. Sapona. This concrete cargo ship was originally commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson to serve as a troop transport to assist in World War I. After that, the ship was used as a floating casino, a storage facility and in the illicit liquor trafficking trade before being sunk by a hurricane in 1956. With depth approaching 20 feet, the site is shallow enough for beginners and children to explore the hull seeking sunken relics. Bimini offers more experienced divers the thrill of exploring underwater walls, reefs, drift dives, wrecks and the Road to the Atlantis. The reefs around the island offer a tapestry of sea life and flora as divers swim alongside stingrays, manta rays, and some 45 different species of sharks found in the Bahamas. Bimini Undersea is a full-service water sports and diving center that can tailor your diving excursion with their certified PADI Dive Center. Each experience is supervised by Bimini Undersea’s professional dive staff. Fishing charters are available for anglers to reel in bonefish, snapper and grouper in the sport fishing capital of the world. Daily charters start at $525 for a half day, and $1,050 for a full day. Half day charters depart at 8am and return at noon, or depart at 1pm and return at 5pm. The charter boat is a Gamefish Sea Hunt 27 and seats 6 passengers. Does something poolside sound a bit more relaxing? In addition to the rooftop infinity pool, Resorts World Bimini offers three other luxurious pools- one of which is the ground floor lazy river pool overlooking Bimini Bay. June / july 2017

women’s health FEATURE

ThermiVa…

What It Is and How It Works

A

new feminine rejuvenation system, called ThermiVa, is offering women a bold option for improving their love lives and boosting their self-esteem. This radically simple, non-surgical solution is helping women reclaim the confidence and aesthetics of their youth, in spite of multiple child births, strenuous vaginal childbirth, or the effects of menopause. Vaginal laxity, dryness and genital irritation can range from a slight annoyance for these women to imposing a major barrier to enjoyment of a satisfying quality of life, particularly sexually. ThermiVa uses radio frequency to tighten the external (labia) and internal (vaginal) areas of a woman’s vaginal region. The result is reduced vaginal dryness, decreased urinary leakage, and enhanced sexual responsiveness, for both a woman and her partner. With ThermiVa, women can alleviate: • Vaginal laxity: tightens the vagina at the opening and along the full length of the vagina, noticeably heightening sensation for both the patient and partner. • Vulvar laxity: tightens labial tissues and reduces sag, resulting in softer, smoother skin and greater comfort in tight clothing. • Vaginal dryness: adds softer, thicker skin and more moisture both internally and externally, making daily life, as well as sexual intercourse, more comfortable, without the use of lubricants. • Stress incontinence: reduces accidents and leakage and possibly even reduces urge symptoms, helping women avoid the need for mesh slings in their vagina. • Orgasmic dysfunction: increases sexual sensitivity and produces more coordinated, stronger muscular contractions, enabling women to achieve orgasm in a shorter period of time. What’s more, ThermiVa does all this without surgery or the associated recovery time. For instance, until recently,

the only other option for women – labiaplasty – involved all the risks of surgery, along with other concerns, such as scarring, infection, bleeding and even nerve damage. With ThermiVa, women need worry about none of these. How ThermiVa Works ThermiVa is a painless, noninvasive, in-office treatment which requires no downtime for women. ThermiVa treatments deliver controlled thermal energy to gently heat the labial and vaginal areas. A small, single-use wand directs heat deep into tissues to encourage the natural production of collagen and shrink tissues. Most patients find the heat level quite comfortable – similar to a hot stone massage treatment – and there’s no need for anesthesia, numbing shots or creams. Total treatment time is less than 30 minutes, and women are able to resume all activities – including sexual intercourse – immediately after treatment. A complete course of therapy consists of three treatments, each about a month apart. Some results of treatment are immediate, and they can be expected to continue and improve with each treatment. Most patients and their partners notice the tightened vaginal canal following the first treatment, resulting in a more satisfying sexual experience right away. However, the ultimate outcome typically takes a few months to fully realize. Over time, the treatment will continuously tighten stretched or loose tissue. Once treatments are completed, women can expect to enjoy the benefits of ThermiVa for at least 9 to 12 months before a maintenance session may be required. So, for women who may be experiencing that out-ofcontrol feeling when their bodies change – especially when it affects the most intimate part of their lives – ThermiVa may bring restored self-confidence, renewed well-being, and a revived relationship.

Is ThermiVa right for you? Schedule a consultation with a physician at The Women’s Center today, at either their Stockbridge office – 770-302-0878 or the Conyers office – 678-413-4644. They’ll help you determine your best option for feminine rejuvenation and discuss how this groundbreaking procedure can help you achieve your goals for a happier, more confident life. page 42

ormer Atlanta Braves Pitcher and Baseball Hall of Famer, Tom Glavine delighted fans once again as he teamed up with a wide range of all-star athletes as he hosted the 25th annual Spring Training event to benefit the Georgia Transplant Foundation (GTF). The event celebrates the second chance at life made available by transplantation while raising awareness and funds to support transplant candidates, recipients, living donors, and their families throughout the state of Georgia. This year’s event took place on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Delta Flight Museum at the Atlanta airport. Sports fans had the opportunity to challenge professional athletes to pool, blackjack and other table-top games. Spring Training participants also had the chance to bid on some unique trips and memorabilia in a live and silent auction containing more than 300 items. With the help of our dedicated sponsors, guests, and volunteers, we were able to raise more than $240,000 for the Foundation. Over the last 25 year, Tom Glavine’s Spring Training has raised more than $7.3 million for the Georgia Transplant Foundation and the states transplant community. The Georgia Transplant Foundation (GTF) is unique in the national

transplant community. Founded in August 1992 by Tommy Smith, a kidney transplant recipient, GTF is focused on providing both financial and educational assistance during a time that is often overwhelming for those undergoing or waiting for a transplant. Today, Georgia Transplant Foundation is the primary source for transplant patient assistance and support for all solid organ transplantation in the entire state of Georgia. The Foundation board includes dedicated professionals from the four Georgia transplant centers and statewide organ recovery agency, community business leaders, transplant recipients and volunteers working together to improve the quality of life for those affected by transplantation. GTF is a 501(c)(3) organization funded through the generosity of foundations like the Carlos and Marguerite Mason Trust, corporations and individuals. All funds raised go to support Georgia residents who are transplant candidates, recipients, living donors or their families. More than 85 cents on every dollar directly supports client services, including: short-term financial assistance, financial planning, support groups, social services, information, help with fundraising, navigating through insurance issues, educational conferences, job training and placement. Outside the Box at

Community Christian School

By: Cary R. Davis Photos: Images by Amie Photography

P

arenting is unquestionably one of the hardest jobs in the world. Parenting a child with learning differences certainly intensifies that job. By partnering with a school that understands learning differences and desires to work as a team, these parents are better able to maneuver the academic and emotional ups and downs of daily school life. We all remember those great educators who made a lasting impression on our lives as students. Perhaps they inspired us to believe in ourselves. Perhaps they encouraged us to do what we thought we could never do. Some may have even changed our entire educational destiny. Mrs. Rebecca Brooks, the director of Community Christian’s Student Support Services, is one of those educators. page 48 SOUTHERNJOURNALMAGAZINE.COM

In the summer of 2011, a spunky, wideeyed Madison sat across the table from 4th grade teacher Cindi McKee. An entrance test was on the table in front of her. As she began reading questions and working out math problems, she narrowed her eyes. Her expression suddenly changed to one of frustration. “I don’t know how to do this,” she said. “Just do your best,” replied the teacher. Madison sighed and proceeded to do her “best,” knowing that it wasn’t good enough. When the testing was finished, she looked Mrs. McKee straight in the eyes and proclaimed, “I know I didn’t do well today, but I really want to be at CCS! I’ll tell my parents I will repeat the 4th grade if you will let me come to your school.” Madison was right. On paper, she was not

even ready for 4th grade. Her learning differences screamed from the pages in front of her, but one thing screamed louder: her determination. The Admissions Team met with Student Support Services, and Mrs. Brooks put together a plan for little Madison. Fast-forward five-and-a-half years. Sixteen-year-old Madison, the little girl who once depended on her fingers to do the most basic 4th grade math, just successfully completed her first semester of high school geometry at CCS. Madison is just one of many success stories coming out of Community Christian’s Student Support Services. CCS established the program in 2010 in response to the growing number of enrolled and potential families looking for the academic support their children needed, all done in a Christian school setting. Student

School can be tough, whether it be timestables in elementary school or geometric proofs in high school. For those “outside the box” learners like Madison and Jacob, school brings extra challenges.

Support is committed to partnering with parents and teachers in providing quality, individualized instruction modes for students with unique learning needs. Speech and Language Services and Learning Labs serve both elementary and middle/high students, and an Elementary Gifted Program (“EDGE”) rounds out the broad array of academic support to children starting as young as two years old at CCS. These “outside the box” learners are all supported in the program. Eight-year-old Jacob’s academic experience has been doubly challenging. In addition to having dyslexia, Jacob is also gifted. Shortly after his dyslexia was diagnosed, Jacob’s mother met Mrs. Brooks. Regarding the initial process, Jacob’s mom remembers: It was kind-of scary at first because you don’t know what to expect. However, soon after meeting Mrs. Brooks, you can tell you’re in good hands. She honestly cares and has the child’s best interests at heart. She had already gathered information from the teachers and observed Jacob in the classroom. She had gone over his educational psychological evaluation, and she knew the recommendations. She was very well prepared with a preliminary plan. But, most of all, she listened to us as parents and adjusted the plan based on our concerns and ideas. Because the Student Support Services also encompasses gifted instruction, Jacob is also involved in CCS’s EDGE program. EDGE stands for “Exceptional Development in Gifted Education.” CCS is one of the few Christian schools on the Southside who have an elementary gifted program. Mrs. D’Anna Entrekin, EDGE Director, loves working with those students who process information at the highest of levels. Jacob, for example, “quickly synthesizes information and makes connections quickly . . . School is dominated by verbal skills, but Jacob’s non-verbal skills are a huge strength—he can construct and build projects by only looking at the final product . . . he has an ability to approach problems with solutions that no one else has thought of.” Mrs. Entrekin is able to relate to Jacob’s learning differences, work in conjunction with his classroom teacher, and build upon his strengths. These all work together to bring success in the classroom. Jacob’s mom agrees. “All the teachers along the way have been awesome and willing to work within his plan and help any way they can. I feel like we have all learned together what Jacob needs to be successful—and successful he has been so far in overcoming the obstacles in his way.” School can be tough, whether it be times-tables in elementary school or geometric proofs in high school. They teach them lessons they can take with them for the rest of their lives, shape them as adults, and build character.” page June / july 2017 49
