They had earlier played to a 1-1 draw in Santa Clara.  Before last season, Chivas USA had won six of the nine meetings, with two draws, since San Jose returned to the league in 2008. The only Quakes victory in that span came in 2010 at Buck Shaw Stadium.  Coaches record: Frank Yallop vs. CHV: P19 W5 L9 D5 … José Luis Sánchez Solá v SJ: first game CHIVAS USA Chivas USA went to a second consecutive 1-0 defeat, this time falling to Real Salt Lake on Saturday evening at Rio Tinto Stadium. Chivas USA sit in a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference with 10 points from 7 matches. LAST MATCH  Chivas had a glorious opportunity in the 35th minute. From a corner kick, the ball deflected toward net and hit the arm of Ned Grabavoy in the box, and referee Jorge Gonzalez immediately pointed to the spot. But RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando parried away Edgar Mejía's shot.  The game's only goal came in the 53rd minute. Olmes García hit a ball forward into the right side of the box to Álvaro Saborío, who deftly chipped the ball to the middle. Javier Morales timed his run perfectly and headed the ball to the bottom-left corner of the net for his first goal since September 2012.  Chivas head coach Jose Luis Sánchez Sola made two changes to the team that fell 1-0 to the Colorado Rapids at The Home Depot Center. Marvin Iraheta came into the midfield for Daniel Antunez and Julio Morales started up top in place of Tristan Bowen.  CHIVAS USA (3-1-4-2) Dan Kennedy - Mario de Luna (Carlos Borja 40), Joaquin Velazquez, Bobby Burling Marvin Iraheta (Giovani Casillas 58) - Eric Avila, Carlos Alvarez, Edgar Mejia (sent off 94+), Jorge Villafana (Tristan Bowen 66) - Jose Correa, Julio Morales. TEAM NEWS  It was a second consecutive 1-0 defeat for Chivas USA, after falling to Colorado in their previous match in Carson. Chivas has allowed a single goal in each of their last six matches.  “I feel like if we continue to put in performances in like that, we’ll look at ourselves in August and we’ll be in a good spot. I think it was a good performance,” said goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. “Obviously it hurts to miss a penalty kick, that’s a massive momentum changer for them. And we still created some opportunities; obviously

this is a hard place to play in this league. I think we came close to shutting them out, it really came down to one or two mistakes.” After scoring 10 goals over a four-match span, Chivas USA have now gone back-to-back games without hitting the back of the net. “We had our opportunities, we just have to put the ball in,” Eric Avila said. “We changed our mind set in the second half we were [finding] pressure a little bit more and it was that one mistake at midfield. Salt lake they put it away. For a second consecutive match, Chivas USA missed a penalty kick. Nick Rimando saved Edgar Mejia’s effort after José Correa rattled one off the crossbar the week before. “We’ve missed twice, but that’s just how it goes,” forward Giovani Casillas said. “We’ve got to keep practicing them in case we get another shot.” Added Tristan Bowen: “It’s not something we need to necessarily focus energy on, but it’s something we’re doing just in case. It’s good to just do it. Guys get their confidence, even though it’s different when you do it in a practice than in a game. But the coaches get a chance to see who’s really comfortable hitting it.” Already hit with an injury to Daniel Antunez that could sideline for a long period, Chivas will have another change to make in their midfield for the San Jose game with the late sending-off of Edgar Mejia. Chivas were also without striker Juan Agudelo for a second consecutive match, as he is sidelined with a hamstring injury. “He’s a big guy for us, a big target,” Avila said. “He’s a guy that causes havoc. Other teams want to double him and it pulls people away. He’s a big distraction and always calm on the ball. We obviously miss him, but we have forwards that can do that same thing. It’s just about knocking it in.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes saw their winless streak reach four games, despite scoring yet another late goal in coming back for a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers on Sunday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes sit in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with 9 points from 8 matches. TEAM NEWS  The Timbers took the lead in the 58th minute when Diego Valeri pounced on a deflected shot by teammate Ryan Johnson and pounded home a bouncing ball from 12 yards out.  But the Earthquakes once again showed their remarkable late magic. A long restart from goalkeeper Jon Busch was flicked on and bounded around the box before Chris Wondolowski gave a subtle touch to tee things up for rookie Adam Jahn, who went to his left to beat goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts cleanly.  Quakes head coach Frank Yallop made three changes to the team that lost 1-0 to the Portland Timbers at JeldWen Field. Steven Beitashour and Nana Attakora came into the back four for Dan Gargan and Ty Harden, and Shea Salinas returned to the lineup in place of the suspended Alan Gordon.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Victor Bernardez, Nana Attakora, Justin Morrow - Shea Salinas (Marvin Chavez 60), Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca (Adam Jahn 84), Ramiro Corrales (Sam Garza 69) - Chris Wondolowski, Steven Lenhart. TEAM NEWS  The Quakes saw their winless streak extended to four games despite coming back for the late point, drawing their last two home games while losing their last two on the road. The Quakes longest winless run a year ago, when they won the Supporters’ Shield, was three games (May 3-19).  For a second time this season, the Earthquakes struck with late magic, getting a stoppage-time equalizer for a the home draw with Portland. The Quakes hit for an added-time winner against New York on March 10. A year ago, the Quakes won or tied eight games with goals in second-half stoppage time.  “We had enough chances to win the game and I thought we deserved to win. It wasn’t the prettiest game to be honest but we dug deep and got a point. That was important for us,” said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “ … For us not to score a goal in this game would not have been good with the quality of chances that we had. We had at least four good looks before the goal.  Rookie Adam Jahn scored his second late goal to give San Jose the share of the points vs. Portland. Jahn scored the first goal in the comeback win vs. New York, an 83rd-minute equalizer.  “He is making me look good right now. He has done well for a young player. He didn’t get in the past couple of games and tonight he proved again that he is a pretty good player,” said Yallop. Added Steven Lenhart: “He’s a great player, dude. He gets in good spots and is really composed and finishes well. He’s effective.”  Winger Marvín Chávez made his 2013 debut, coming on for the final half-hour in place of Shea Salinas. Chavez had missed three months with a sprained knee ligament  “He’s desperate to play,” Yallop said. “He’s not [fully] match-fit, obviously, but I thought he did very well ... He’s a very confident person in his ability and he made a difference when he came on. The individual stuff he did, him being out there, I think he just lifted the crowd, lifted us a little bit.”

Fullback Steven Beitashour also was able to make his season debut, playing the full match on the right of the back four, after undergoing two sports hernia surgeries in the offseason. “[Beitashour and Chavez] are not one-dimensional; they can take it inside, they can take it outside, use both feet, put crosses in,” Wondolowski said. “Marvin can shoot; he cut it in and hit a great left-footed shot. It makes it tough for defenses, which makes it easier for us to find space ... I thought Beita had a couple great balls in. We were just missing a little bit, but I think it’ll be very soon when we’re back together.”

Chivas USA vs. San Jose Earthquakes Saturday, April 27, 2013 – The Home Depot Center; Carson, Calif., 7:30 pm (PT)

Rojiblancos Face NoCal Rival Chivas USA returns home to continue its Western Conference play when it faces Northern California rival the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, April 27, at the Home Depot Center for a 7:30 p.m. (PT) kickoff. The match is the first of three meetings between the clubs and can be heard in Spanish on W Radio 690 AM. For more information please visit cdchivasusa.com. Follow us on Twitter @cdchivasusa and Facebook.com/chivasusa. PREVIOUS MATCH Chivas USA (3-3-1) fell, 1-0, last Saturday at Real Salt Lake (3-3-2) before a crowd of 14,900 at Rio Tinto Stadium. The host side was led by Javier Morales’ first goal of the season in the second half. With the loss, the Rojiblancos currently sit in fourth place in the Western Conference standings with the third most points (10). The Rojiblancos got into their attacking third and took six corner kicks in the first half as a result, one of which generated a golden opportunity for the Goats to take the initial lead in the match. In the 35th minute, Edgar “Chore” Mejia’s entry from the left corner was handled by a RSL player near the short area. But Mejia was unable to convert on the penalty as RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando deflected the shot with a dive to his left. Chivas USA continued to get into dangerous spots inside the host’s defense and create opportunities. As first-half stoppage time ticked away, rookie midfielder Carlos Alvarez nearly put the Red-and-White up a goal on his left-footed strike near the left corner of the short area. Forward Julio Morales dropped off his pass near the arc to Alvarez who was making his run inside the left side of the box, but Alvarez’s shot was wide right of the far post, and the sides went into the half locked in a scoreless tie. RSL went up 1-0 in the 53rd minute off Morales’ header just outside the short area that found the inside of the left post. Alvaro Saborio received a slotted ball inside the right side of the box and crossed it to Morales, who was positioned inside the box and knocked in the eventual game-winner. The Red-and-White continued to push their numbers forward throughout the second half in search of the equalizer to come away with their second road result of the season, but could not find the back of the net and the 1-0 marker stood. GOATS NOTES & FACTS Mejia and Burling Out for Saturday’s In-State Showdown Chivas USA will head into Saturday’s conference showdown against its in-state rival without two of its key players. Midfielder Edgar “Chore” Mejia will miss action because of a red card he was issued in last Saturday’s match and Burling will sit out due to yellow card accumulation.

Last Game Earthquakes 1, Portland Timbers 1; April 21, 2013; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Rookie forward Adam Jahn scored in the 92nd minute to rally the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers at a sold out Buck Shaw Stadium. Jahn began the scoring sequence, flicking a header into the mix with San Jose (2-3-3, 9 pts.) trailing 1-0. Nana Attakora got his foot to the ball and centered a pass to Chris Wondolowski. The reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player laid the ball off for Jahn who blasted his shot past Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts to earn the Earthquakes a home point. The Earthquakes out-shot their guests 12-7 on the night and were knocking on the door for much of the evening. Wondolowski had a one-onone opportunity denied by Ricketts in the first half while Sam Garza was turned away in similar fashion in the second half. Steven Lenhart also saw his 72nd-minute header float inches wide of the far post. Despite the number of chances generated, it was Portland who tallied first. Steven Beitashour cleanly tackled the ball away from Ryan Johnson in the area, but the ball glanced off the attacker and to the feet of Diego Valeri. The Argentine Designated Player volleyed with Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch off his line and found the net for a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES Beitashour, Chavez Make Season Debuts All-Start defender Steven Beitashour and Honduran midfielder Marvin Chavez made their 2013 debuts in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers at Buck Shaw Stadium. Beitashour started and played 90 minutes at right back after missing the club’s first eight games while recovering from surgery to repair a sports hernia. Meanwhile, Chavez came off the bench for Shea Salinas at right mid in the 60th minute; the speedy winger also sat out San Jose’s first eight games due to a sprained medial-collateral ligament. Jahn-y on the Spot Adam Jahn scored his second career MLS goal in dramatic fashion on Sunday, slamming home a 92nd-minute equalizer to earn San Jose a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers at Buck Shaw Stadium. The former Stanford target man scored his first goal against the New York Red Bulls on March 10 and won the game-winning penalty in the 90th minute of a 2-1 Earthquakes win. Jahn was a first-round (No. 15 overall) 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft pick of the Quakes. Baca Makes 50th Career Start Earthquakes midfielder Rafael Baca made his 50th career start in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers at Buck Shaw Stadium. The third-year central midfielder has started each of San Jose’s eight matches in 2013. The former Loyola Marymount standout signed with the Earthquakes on July 8, 2011 as an undrafted rookie. Morrow Approaching Career Milestone Earthquakes defender Justin Morrow is one away from 50 career starts. The 2012 MLS All-Star left back started 33 of San Jose’s 34 games one year ago – logging 2,970 minutes of a possible 3,060 in the process – and had put in 90-minute efforts in six of the club’s seven matches so far in 2013. His one missed start came due to U.S. Men’s National Team duty in March; he was on the bench for the USMNT’s 1-0 win against Costa Rica in Denver, Colo. on March 22 and their scoreless draw against Mexico in Mexico City on March 26. Gargan Approaching Century Mark Earthquakes defender Dan Gargan is one away from 100 career MLS starts. The eight-year MLS veteran joined San Jose through the second stage of the 2012 MLS Re-Entry Draft and signed on Jan. 25, 2013. His journey through the league has included stops with the Colorado Rapids, (2005-08), Chivas USA (2008), Toronto FC (2010-11), Chicago Fire (2011-12) and now the Earthquakes. He has three starts to date for San Jose. Gordon Suspended Three Games by Commissioner MLS Commissioner Don Garber has suspended Gordon for three games and fined him an undisclosed amount for using unacceptable and offensive language towards an opponent in the 60th minute of the game against the Portland Timbers on April 14. Commissioner Garber also mandated that Gordon attend diversity and sensitivity training. This is in addition to the training that all MLS clubs attend at the beginning of each season. Gordon also received a red card for his second caution for separate fouls during the game and such an ejection carries an automatic one-game suspension and fine. Gordon will serve a total suspension of four games: April 21 against Portland, April 27 at Chivas USA, May 4 against Montreal Impact and May 8 against Toronto FC. San Jose Earthquakes vs. Chivas USA, April 27, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. PT May 18 Match vs. Colorado Sold Out The Earthquakes announced last week that their May 18 match against the Colorado Rapids, presented by Kaiser Permanente, is sold out. The club has held a limited number of seats that are available through mini-plans and season ticket packages, but group and individual tickets are no longer available. Tickets are still available for the club’s remaining fixtures up to that date. Those matches include: Saturday, May 4 vs. Montreal Impact at 1 p.m. PT; and Wednesday, May 8 vs. Toronto FC at 7:30 p.m. PT. Corrales Makes 300th Career Appearance Captain Ramiro Corrales made his 300th career MLS appearance in the Earthquakes 2-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium on March 30. The last remaining active player from the league’s inaugural 1996 season, Corrales began his career with the San Jose Clash. He made his first appearance on April 28, 1996, subbing on for Victor Mella in the 87th minute of a 2-1 loss against the LA Galaxy. Wondo Hits Century Mark in San Jose Chris Wondolowski made his 100th career start with San Jose in the Earthquakes 2-0 loss against the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium on March 30. He made his first start with the club in a 2-1 loss against Seattle Sounders FC on June 13, 2009 at CenturyLink Field. His first appearance came on Sept. 10, 2005, playing one minute in a 3-0 win against Chivas USA. Quakes Sign Martinez The San Jose Earthquakes announced on March 15 that they signed Honduran forward/midfielder Walter “Pery” Martinez. The World Cup veteran has made 51 appearances with Honduras, while scoring 12 goals. He played in all three matches for Honduras at the 2010 World Cup. In his club career, he has played for CD Victoria (Honduras), CD Marathon (Honduras), Deportivo Alaves (Spain), Beijing Guoan (China) and Chongqing FC (China). March to 200 Continues The Earthquakes are nine wins away from their 200th as an MLS club. San Jose secured their 100th win on July 19, 2003 against D.C. United when the Earthquakes won 2-1. Manny Lagos scored the game winner in the 54th minute. The Earthquakes are also four away from 100 draws. Defend the Shield Since the Earthquakes won the Supporters Shield in 2005, only three teams have successfully defended the shield in back-to-back seasons: the LA Galaxy 2010-11, Columbus Crew 2009-10 and D.C. United 2006-07. Wondo Inks Designated Player Contract Chris Wondolowski became the second Designated Player in club history when he signed a new contract with the Earthquakes on Tuesday, Feb. 26. He is the reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player after tying the league record for goals in a season with 27. Wondolowski also received MLS Best XI honors last season as well as the Budweiser Golden Boot. He is the club’s all-time leading goal scorer with 64 and set a league record for goals during a three-year stretch dating back to 2010 with 61 over that span. The only other DP in club history is Geovanni, a Brazilian attacker who was signed on Aug. 16, 2010. Fresh Faces in 2013 The Earthquakes added eight new players during the offseason. While most of the starting lineup is back in 2013, here’s a glance at the new additions bolstering the squad’s depth: D Dan Gargan – Acquired via MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 7, 2012, signed Jan. 25, 2013 D Ty Harden – Acquired via MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 7, 2012, signed Jan. 25, 2013 F Mike Fucito – Acquired via trade from Portland Timbers for second round SuperDraft pick on Jan. 17, 2013, signed on Feb. 13, 2013 D Peter McGlynn – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on Feb. 15, 2013 D Nana Attakora – Signed on Feb. 22, 2013 after playing with FC Haka of Finland in 2012 F Adam Jahn – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on March 1, 2013 D Tommy Muller – Acquired via MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 17, 2013, signed on March 1, 2013 M Cordell Cato – Acquired via trade from Seattle Sounders FC on March 1, 2013 M Abu Tommy – Signed on March 12, 2013 after playing with FC Sheriff of Moldova in 2012 D Colin Mitchell – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on March 12, 2013 F/M Walter “Pery” Martinez – Signed on March 15, 2013 after playing with Chongqing FC in 2012 F Alexandre Gonzalez Emerson – Signed April 4, 2013 after playing with Necaxa (Mexico) in 2012 Historic Turnaround The Earthquakes improved by 28 points and 11 wins from their 2011 season, one of the best turnarounds in MLS history. The 28-point difference from 2011 to 2012 rank fourth on the MLS all-time list, 11 behind the 1999 MetroStars. Meanwhile, the Earthquakes’ 11 additional wins in 2012 rank No. 1 all-time, one-upping the 1999 MetroStars and 2009 New York Red Bulls. Club Records from 2012 The Earthquakes’ 19 wins in 2012 tied a club record set in 1999 while their 66 points established a new San Jose best. The Earthquakes won 10 of their games in 1999 via shootout, a tie-breaking procedure that is no longer a part of MLS rules. The club’s previous record for points in a season was 64 when they took home the Supporters’ Shield trophy in 2005.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Chivas USA, April 27, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. PT Wondo in 20-Goal Club Chris Wondolowski’s 27 goals in 2012 made him the 10th player in league history to tally 20 or more times in a single season. The last player to score 20 or more in a season was Landon Donovan with the LA Galaxy in 2008. Goonie Stats from 2012 The Earthquakes made headlines in 2012 for their late-game heroics. Here’s some key stats to keep in mind from the Goonies: -40 goals during the final 30 minutes of matches -22 goals during the final 15 minutes of matches -9 goals in second-half stoppage time, eight of which earned San Jose a win or draw -13 additional points in the standings the Earthquakes received due to second-half stoppage time goals Construction Resumes on New Earthquakes Stadium Construction has begun on the club’s stadium, which is set to open in 2014. The Earthquakes set a Guinness World Record for largest participatory groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 21, 2012 and began site prep work the week of Feb. 25. For more information about new stadium tickets, visit www.sjearthquakes.com/newstadium or call 408-556-7700. And Then There Was One Ramiro Corrales is the lone remaining active player in MLS who participated in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. Defender Frankie Hejduk and goalkeeper Zack Thornton made a handful of appearances for the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively, in 2011, but both announced their retirement prior to the 2012 season. Wondolowski’s 2012 Campaign Again Among the Most Prolific in Club History For the third straight season in 2012, Chris Wondolowski posted the top-scoring output in club history. With a penalty kick awarded in the final game of the regular-season against the Portland Timbers, Wondolowski tied MLS’s all-time scoring leader Roy Lassiter’s record of 27 goals. Wondolowski is the only player in Earthquakes history to score 15 goals or more three times in his career. He and Ronald Cerritos are the only players in club history to produce multiple seasons with double-digit goal totals. The five best single-season goal outputs in club history follow: 1. Chris Wondolowski – 27 goals in 2012 2. Chris Wondolowski – 18 goals in 2010 3. Chris Wondolowski – 16 goals in 2011 4. Ronald Cerritos – 15 goals in 1999 5. Ariel Graziani – 14 goals in 2002 6. Ronald Cerritos – 13 goals in 1998 6. Paul Bravo – 13 goals in 1996 Busch Among All-time Leaders Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch finds himself among the all-time leaders in several goalkeeping categories. He is eighth in games played (233) and games started (232), while placing ninth in wins (92). With one more win he will move into a tie for eighth with Pat Onstad. Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 87-9-25 since 2001 when scoring the first goal. So far in 2013, the Earthquakes are 1-0-1 when scoring first. In 2012, San Jose was 14-2-2 when scoring first, their two losses coming at Vancouver (2-1) on May 5 and at Montreal (3-1) on Aug. 18. The club was 7-4-5 in 2011, 12-0-2 in 2010, 6-1-5 in 2009 and 8-1-3 in 2008. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (130-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Scoring First Under Yallop During Frank Yallop’s tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes are one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The Quakes are 84-10-20 (.825) in nine seasons under Yallop when striking first. The team went 36-2-3 from 2001-03 when producing the first goal of the contest. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. Yallop’s team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010, 7-4-5 in 2011 and 14-2-1 in 2012 and is 1-0-1 so far in 2013. Halftime Success Last season, the Earthquakes were amongst the best in league history in holding onto a halftime lead. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 93-3-17 (.898) when leading at the half, including a mark of 1-0-1 so far in 2013. The club was 12-0-1 in 2012, with the only draw coming against Portland on Oct. 27 at JELD-WEN Field, 4-2-2 in 2011, 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 6-1-0 in 2008, 70-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. They are off to a 11-0-0 start in 2012. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage.
