With this issue of Connections, we will take a look at those awards celebrating milestone anniversaries of their establishment.
Jeannette Svendson ’66
Martin and Jeffery Svendson, brothers of Jeannette, present the 2017 Jeannette Svendson Memorial Award to Gaby Fuentes.
The Jeannette Svendson Memorial Award was established in 1968 and will celebrate its 50th year this spring. It is presented each year to the graduate who possesses qualities which were characteristic of Jeannette, a 1966 graduate who was killed in an automobile accident shortly after graduation. Jeannette exemplified love and kindness to everyone she met. This monetary award goes to a senior who always has a smile on her face and is filled with gratitude and appreciation for life. As was said of Jeannette, so it can be said about the award recipient: Always positive, she lifts the spirits of those she meets and leaves everyone feeling better for the encounter. The Courtney Myshrall Memorial Award was established in 1998 and will mark its 20th year this spring. It is given in memory of Courtney Myshrall, a 1995 graduate who suffered an accidental death in the summer of 1996. This monetary award is voted on by the senior class and given to the classmate who embodies the characteristics that defined Courtney: a kindhearted, nonjudgmental young woman whose outgoing nature and joy for life touched those around her. Courtney’s mother, Sharon Myshrall, class of 1969, and sister, Britney Myshrall Piner, class of 1992, present the award each year.
