lorence is revving-up for both the annual Rods N Rhodies Invitational Car Show and Benefit and the Community-wide Garage Sale. This year’s edition takes place primarily in and around Historic Old Town Florence on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11. The Community-wide Garage Sale continues through Sunday, Sept. 12. “At Rods N Rhodies, you know you’ll see some of the West Coast’s most gorgeous, amazing, awe-inspiring hot rods all around town,” said organizer Gary Cargill. “Up to 125 of the west coast’s best high-end hot rods, rat rods, and custom cruisers from 1976 and earlier will be in town. Some are worth up to a quarter-million dollars.” Though known primarily for the annual September event, Rods N Rhodies became its own local volunteer-led nonprofit in 2018 with a renewed vision to provide automotive assistance to locals in need. This year’s event will be a benefit for their mission and goals. “It’s a high-octane weekend at a spectacular time of year

weekend by Russ Strohmeyer, a popular DJ on the car show circuit. “He’s a master, a car enthusiast, and his DJ equipment is to die for,” said Cargill. Bargain hunters can pick up a guide to the Community-wide Garage Sale at the Siuslaw News office, 148 Maple St., at TheSiuslawNews.com and in the Saturday edition of the newspaper that week. Maps will also be available at FlorenceChamber. com. People can then cruise the bargain trail all weekend to stop by dozens of commercial and private sales all over town. On Saturday, Bay Street will be blocked to regular traffic beginning at 7 a.m. for exhibitors to enter at the west end at Kingwood. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. cars will be on display along both sides of the street, there will be themed music, and raffle tickets for sale with a different winner’s name drawn every half hour. The awards presentation begins at 4 p.m. with exhibitors vying for the Merchant Award, Children’s Choice Award, Peo-

lorence’s annual treasure hunt begins all over the area on Friday, Sept. 10, and continues through Sunday, Sept. 12. The eighth annual Communitywide Garage Sale has dozens of locations throughout the city and surrounding communities, as well as business participants in Historic Old Town and the Antique District on Highway 101. All are listed in the directory map (see pages 3-4). There are treasures aplenty out there just waiting to be found! If you’re a seasoned garage-saler,

ples’ Choice Award, and Best of Show Award. Visitors are invited to vote for the Peoples’ Choice by obtaining a ballot in Old Town and returning it by 3 p.m. According to Cargill, “Rod” and “Rhody” — retired teachers in blue and pink overalls like mechanics wore back in the day — will help kids with a special ballot for the Children’s Choice Award. Kids who vote receive a small goodie bag. “The couple will also inform the public about the Rods N Rhodies, Inc.’s Transportation Solutions Project, which assists local families in need with transportation solutions,” Cargill added. At 4:15 p.m., immediately following the awards presentation, cruisers will begin the annual classic car cruise in and around Historic Old Town. “The cruise is one of the public’s and exhibitors’ favorite events during the weekend,” said Cargill. “Low and slow is the goal.” Rods N Rhodies uses this annual event as a benefit to highlight Rods N Rhodies, Inc. and its Transportation Solu-

you probably don’t need help. But if this is all new to you, here are a few hints to help make the day extra fun. 1. Pick an area or neighborhood to start in, then use a highlighter to help map out your “plan of attack.” You’ve got a lot of ground to cover — stay organized. 2. Pack some extra boxes, sacks and/or packing paper in your car. It’s always a big disappointment to get home with a fragile find and discover that it’s been broken in transport because it wasn’t careful-

tions Project. “Most of us go through dayto-day activities without even thinking about how we will get to where we want to go,” Cargill said. “We have the means of transportation that is reliable and comfortable. However, within our community, there are those who struggle to make ends meet and don’t have that luxury. “Many families who do own transportation may not have the means to properly maintain the vehicle for safety and reliability. Sometimes it comes down to a choice between the car or food, clothing, or housing. An unexpected flat tire has been known to cost a person a job for making them late. A burned-out headlight or taillight yields an expensive citation. Worn out windshield wipers can impair vision leading to an accident. We want to change that for as many as possible.” Get involved with Rods N Rhodies by contacting Rods N Rhodies President Gary Cargill at 541-999-6513 or florencerodsnrhodies@gmail. com.

ly wrapped. 3. Bring plenty of change and small bills. You are going to need them! 4. Take snacks and beverages along to keep you fortified. This garage-sale stuff is serious business and takes a lot of energy. 5. Be friendly. Have fun. Don’t be afraid to negotiate, but haggle fairly. Keep it fun! Transportation Solutions Project

Introducing Rods N Rhodies, Inc., an Oregon nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization formed in Florence in November 2018. “We are an organization that would like to be part of the solution,” said Rods N Rhodies President Gary Cargill. Formed from the committee that has been planning the September Rods N Rhodies for the past 13 years, the nonprofit wanted to find a way to highlight how cars are needed for transportation. “Most of us go through day to day activities without even thinking about how we will get to where we want to go. We have the means of transportation that is reliable and comfortable. However, within our community, there are those who struggle to make ends meet and don’t have that luxury,” Cargill said. Many families who do own transportation may not have the means to properly maintain the vehicle and keep the focus on safety and reliability. The everyday costs such as food, clothing, housing and even school activities can take precedence. That means that transportation for them may simply be a luxury. Unexpected breakdowns, flat tires, broken windows

Classic car restoration for beginners

and burned out headlights can all be safety issues requiring costly repairs. “These items are some of the things that can send young families into deep distress,” Cargill said. “For many families, even the vehicle registration fees, insurance costs and fuel to are overwhelming.” Many programs and organizations providing for food, clothing and even electricity are available to families, but transportation solutions are far and few. By working with community support such as churches, outreach services, family centers and vehicle repair facilities, Rods N Rhodies is helping to provide a safe and reliable means of transportation for people in the Siuslaw Region. The nonprofit has already partnered with Siuslaw Outreach Services and Florence Parenting and Pregnancy Center. “Once the families have been identified, it will be necessary for community businesses to provide the ability to resolve the problem,” Cargill said. “You may be surprised to find out how many of the community repair facilities have and continue to

reach out to those in need, at the cost to their business.” Rods N Rhodies seeks to connect those families to services, and pay for them. Community businesses such as Tony’s Garage, Hoberg’s Auto Center, Les Schwab Tire Center and Shervins Auto Center are repair partners, with Davison Auto Parts (Napa) also involved. Other supporters include Western Lane Community Foundation and Shorewood Senior Living. “We thank them for their support in becoming a major addition to the solution of providing safe and reliable transportation for those families who work, go to school and even volunteer in our community,” Cargill said. “Rods N Rhodies, Inc. will need more support, volunteers, businesses and grant writers in order to continue this project on a continuous basis.” For more information, visit rodsnrhodies.org or call Cargill at 541-999-6513.

They’re eye-catching, often exotic and always call to mind a bygone era. Classic cars are undeniably unique and their unrivaled automotive appeal has inspired legions of fans. That appeal also has compelled many to try their hand at classic car restoration. Restoring a classic car can be a rewarding hobby, particularly the first time a vehicle emerges from its owner’s garage and hits the open road. Car buffs interested in restoring a classic car of their own can consider various factors before they lift the hood on this challenging yet rewarding hobby. Time and Money It’s hard to know if a classic car restoration will cost owners more time or money, but restoration novices should expect to spend a lot of both as they work to restore a ride to its former glory. CarsDirect.com estimates that a restoration done by a professional shop can cost anywhere from $40,000 to $60,000, and that does not necessarily include the cost of the vehicle. If the financial commitment raises an eyebrow, perhaps would-be people should look away from the estimated time it takes to restore a classic car. CarsDirect

notes that it can take around 1,000 hours for DIYers to restore a classic car. The excitement of restoring a classic car can quickly wear off if owners don’t have enough time and/or money to keep the project going at a steady pace. The Car Some car buffs may already envision which type of car they want to restore. Some may want to restore a classic Ford Mustang like the one they drove in high school, while others with a flare for automotive history might want to restore a 1930s classic. Whatever your preference, make sure you find a car that won’t bust your budget. Even the initial cost to purchase the car from a local salvage yard can be deceiving. Some cars might only be affordable because they’ve experienced such extensive damage that the cost to restore them will be especially high. It’s good to know what you’re looking for as you begin to scour newspaper classified ads or visit local salvage yards. But allow yourself some room for flexibility in regard to the type of car you’re willing to restore. That can ensure you aren’t breaking your budget right away or overcommitting yourself to a project

that may prove beyond your range of abilities. Online car forums can be great places to get some insight into restoration, especially for beginners.

The Project In addition to determining which car to get and how much time and money you can realistically devote to the restoration project, car enthusiasts must determine which tools they’ll need, where they’re going to work on the project and the availability of parts. Discounted parts can help offset considerable restoration costs, so access to a local seller or salvage yard can be a significant advantage. The internet has made finding parts easier. A place to work also is a must-have, so garages may need to be outfitted to make projects more enjoyable. Tools also can be costly, though CarsDirect notes that different steps in the process require different tools. That can make it easier to spread out the cost of buying new tools. Classic car restoration can be an engaging hobby. Novices are urged to learn as much about restoration as possible before they decide to fully commit to this potentially rewarding endeavor.

Host a successful garage sale Shop sales in your Many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Yard sales may seem straightforward, but there are a few strategies to ensure sales go boom rather than bust. Begin early in the morning so that shoppers will not need to disrupt their schedules much to visit neighborhood sales. To reach the maximum number of shoppers, advertise your sale in various ways. Signs should be bold, simple and easily readable for passing cars. Arrange goods for sale into

categories and pay attention to presentation. You may generate more sales if items are easy to see and browsing is made easy. Put items you expect to draw the most attention near the end of the driveway to entice passers-by. A neat and inviting appearance may convey that you’ve taken care of your home and your belongings. It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible.

neighborhood

While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills. When Buying • Map out your sales. Look at advertisements and plot which sales you plan to visit. If you have specific items in mind to buy, you may have to visit several sales before you find them. • Buy only what you need. Don’t be

1 Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be on your feet all day, including time spent on grass and dirt. 2 Map your route to make the best use of your time. Stopping at sites with multiple vendors gives you more shopping time and requires less driving time. 3 Wear sunscreen or a hat or both, and try to keep your face in the shade. 4 Bring water and snacks. 5 Have a tape measure handy to make sure large purchases such as furniture will fit inside your house. 6 Hit the ATM for cash before you head out; most vendors don’t take credit cards. 7 Take along a rolling tote to hold your purchases. This minimizes the amount of weight you have to carry and keeps your hands free to keep shopping. 8 Pack hand sanitizer. If you’re shopping at a large venue, the only restrooms might be portable ones, which don’t include sinks for proper hand-washing. 9 Think ahead on shipping. If you buy something big, will you send it from an overnight shipping service or bus service, or will you need to rent a truck or trailer? 10 If you see something you like, buy it, because when you come back later it will probably be gone.

Put an ad in your local newspaper. Some papers have community calendar sections where they also can make mention of the sale. • Place signs around your neighborhood. Be aware that there are ordinances that govern where signage can be located. Make sure signs are legible for drivers and pedestrians alike. Then, pick them up afterwards and recycle or reuse them. • Have a nice display. First impressions can mean a lot. Buyers are more apt to visit neat, well-laid-out sales than those that are just a bunch of boxes that have to be dug through. • Be reasonable when pricing items. Be objective in your assessment of your things. What has value to you may not have as much value to someone else. Leave room for negotiation. Whether you are the yard sale shopper or seller, following some guidelines can make your experience more successful.

tempted to stock up simply because the deals are good. Decide whether an item will be put to good use or you’ll be selling it yourself later. • Leave young kids at home. Many kids will grow bored after the first yard sale, if not earlier. Hire a sitter and shop unencumbered. • Bring small bills. In a world where credit and debit cards prevail, yard sales stand out as cash-only endeavors. Save the seller the hassle of breaking big bills and using up all of his or her change by bringing along small denominations and even change. • Shop with a plan. If you are looking for something specific, you have the best chance of finding it by shopping early. For the best bargains, shopping toward the end of the sales may garner some deep discounts. When Selling • Advertise the sale. The more shoppers the better, so advertising your yard sale can be advantageous.
