However, within our community, there are those who struggle to make ends meet and don’t have that luxury.“Many families who do own transportation may not have the means to proper ly maintain the vehicle for safety and reliability. Some times it comes down to a choice between the car or food, clothing, or housing. An unexpected flat tire has been known to cost a person a job for making them late. A burned-out headlight or taillight yields an expensive citation. Worn out wind shield wipers can impair vi sion leading to an accident. We want to change that for as many as possible.” Get involved with Rods N Rhodies by contacting Rods N Rhodies President Gary Cargill at 541-999-6513 tation-solutions.rodsnrhodies.org/transporgmail.com.florencerodsnrhodies@orLearnmoreat

If you’re a seasoned garage-saler, you probably don’t need help. But if this is all new to you, here are a few hints to help make the day extra fun. 1. Pick an area or neighborhood to start in, then use a highlighter to help map out your “plan of attack.” You’ve got a lot of ground to cover — stay organized.2.Packsome extra boxes, sacks and/or packing paper in your car. It’s always a big disappointment to get home with a fragile find and discover that it’s been broken in transport be cause it wasn’t carefully wrapped. 3. Bring plenty of change and small bills. You are going to need them! 4. Take snacks and beverages along to keep you fortified. This garage-sale stuff is serious business and takes a lot of energy. Or plan to stop at a local restaurant or coffeeshop for restau rants.5.Be friendly. Have fun. Don’t be afraid to negotiate, but haggle fairly. Keep it fun! Read inside for more tips on how to make the perfect find or even set up your sale.

How to maintain an older vehicle

Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required. • Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they’re going to burn. So drivers of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. This also is a great way to discover leaks be fore they lead to potential ly significant issues.

The Car

They’re eye-catching, often exotic and always call to mind a bygone era. Classic cars are undeniably unique and their unrivaled automotive appeal has inspired legions of fans. That appeal also has com pelled many to try their hand at classic car restoration. Restoring a classic car can be a rewarding hobby, partic ularly the first time a vehicle emerges from its owner’s garage and hits the open road. Car buffs interested in restoring a classic car of their own can consider various factors before they lift the hood on this challenging yet rewarding hobby. Time and Money It’s hard to know if a classic car restoration will cost owners more time or money, but restoration novices should expect to spend a lot of both as they work to restore a ride to its former glory. CarsDirect.com estimates that a restoration done by a profession al shop can cost anywhere from $40,000 to $60,000, and that does not necessarily include the cost of the vehicle. If the financial commitment rais es an eyebrow, perhaps would-be people should look away from the estimated time it takes to restore a classic car. CarsDirect notes that it can take around 1,000 hours for DIYers to restore a classic car. The excitement of restoring a classic car can quickly wear off if own ers don’t have enough time and/or money to keep the project going at a steady pace.

Some car buffs may already envi sion which type of car they want to restore. Some may want to restore a classic Ford Mustang like the one they drove in high school, while others with a flare for automotive history might want to restore a 1930sWhateverclassic.your preference, make sure you find a car that won’t bust your budget. Even the initial cost to purchase the car from a local sal vage yard can be deceiving. Some cars might only be affordable be cause they’ve experienced such extensive damage that the cost to restore them will be especially high.

That’s infrequent, but drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. • Take care of the brakes and associated components. RODS N RHODIES & COMMUNITY-WIDE GARAGE SALE Classic car restoration for beginners

It’s good to know what you’re looking for as you begin to scour newspaper classified ads or visit lo cal salvage yards. But allow yourself some room for flexibility in regard to the type of car you’re willing to restore.

• Don’t skip mainte nance appointments. It’s best not to skip recom mended maintenance in tervals. That’s true for drivers of all cars, but especially those whose ve hicles are aging. Routine tune-ups and oil chang es, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul. The rising cost of new cars is compelling mil lions of drivers to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. Some simple maintenance measures can help those cars run strong for years to come.

That can ensure you aren’t breaking your budget right away or overcommitting yourself to a project that may prove beyond your range of abilities. Online car forums can be great places to get some insight into restoration, especially for beginners. The Project In addition to determining which car to get and how much time and money you can realis tically devote to the restoration project, car enthusiasts must de termine which tools they’ll need, where they’re going to work on the project and the availability of parts.Discounted parts can help offset considerable restoration costs, so access to a local seller or salvage yard can be a significant advan tage. The internet has made find ing parts easier. A place to work also is a musthave, so garages may need to be outfitted to make projects more enjoyable. Tools also can be costly, though CarsDirect notes that dif ferent steps in the process require different tools. That can make it easier to spread out the cost of buying new tools. Classic car restoration can be an engaging hobby. Novices are urged to learn as much about restoration as possible before they decide to fully commit to this potentially re warding endeavor.

Drivers can take these steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come. • Take care of the tim ing belt. Engines cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt. Engines need various components to do their job, and those compo nents must do so at the right time for the engine to run smoothly. Fully functional timing belts help to synchronize move ments, but belts must be replaced every so often.

How to care for table linens

1. Determine what orga nization means to you. Be ing organized might mean one thing to you and some thing else entirely to some one else. Some may put form before function. Oth ers may be interested in the aesthetics of a neat-looking space. Once you have a handle on what being or ganized entails to you, you can get to work. 2. Start with what mo tivates you most. Perhaps this is a room in the home that has become overrun with clutter. Or maybe it’s getting finances organized so you can save for a dream vacation. When you ac complish your biggest goal, the seemingly smaller ones may seem less difficult. 3. Declutter your mind. Think of a busy mind as a computer that has that turning hourglass or spin ning color wheel icon when it’s stuck on a process. Ev ery application stalls be cause the computer cannot do everything at once. The same thing can happen in the brain. Sit down and make a to-do list of what’s on your mind. Then start prioritizing tasks. This will do wonders to clear your head.4. Create deadlines for yourself. An open-ended timeline to get things done may promote procrastina tion. Deadlines may pro vide motivation. 5. Avoid distractions. Try to remove as many dis tractions as possible. When working on a chore, hire a babysitter to look after the children or step away from social media so you can fo cus on the task at hand. In terruptions only slow you down.6.Think before you ac quire. Once you are orga nized you may have chal lenges fitting new items into the mix. If you’re getting ready to purchase some thing new, carefully con sider its usefulnesss and de termine in advance where it will go, and whether or not you have the space. 7. Be accountable to an other. Having help getting organized can mean dele gating certain tasks or en listing someone to check in with you to see if you’re on target. Embrace this system of checks and balances. Selecting table linens According to the eti quette and entertaining experts at Better Homes & Gardens, white damask or plain white linen ta blecloths are traditionally used for formal dinners. However, for many other parties, hosts and hostess es can use a variety of dif ferent tablecloth materials and styles to fit their decor. If frequent spills or table service with young chil dren is expected, many table linen materials bead up liquids for easy clean up. Also, for ease of use, select linens that can be machine-washed and will not require special treat ment. Display old linens A dinner party can be made extra-special by using antique or passeddown linens. Many of these tablecloths may be made from actual linen. Use care when launder ing linens that cannot be tumble-dried, which can over-dry the fibers. Line dry and store rolled for the best results. Steam-iron linens so they’ll be crisp on the table.

over prices for individual items, so buyers who love to negotiate may not get the opportunity to do so at estate sales. Are estate sales and es tate auctions the same? Estate sales and estate auctions differ in vari ous ways. Estate auctions may be conducted in per son, though many are now conducted via a third party website. In person estate auctions may be managed by an auction eer, and items will ulti mately go to the highest bidder once the item goes up for sale. Web-based es tate auctions ask prospec tive buyers to create an account via their website, and potential participants may be asked to enter their credit card informa tion prior to bidding. Us ers then submit bids and the auction will continue for a predetermined peri od of time. The respon sibility of inspecting and picking up items typically rests with the buyers. First-come, first-serve is how many estate sales are conducted. In such instances, the first person to meet the seller’s ask ing prices gets the item. Newspaper classified sec tions are great resources for people looking for local estate sales. Buyers who want high-quality items should try to arrive at the estate sale when it begins, if not earlier. How long do estate sales last? Many estate sales are conducted over a full weekend. Sales may begin on Saturday morning and then end on Sunday after noon. Early birds might find the most high-qual ity items, but those sim ply looking for bargains may find great deals in the final hours of the es tate sale when sellers are simply looking to unload items.People looking to furnish their homes can find great deals at estate sales.

Many estate sales are conducted in person. In person estate sales are typically conducted at private residences and items will be marked with price tags. Buyers at es tate sales typically walk through the home at their leisure. Sellers may be willing to negotiate sale prices, though buyers should not count on that. The sheer volume of items available for purchase at estate sales means sellers typically don’t have the time or energy to haggle

Treating stains The quicker you act, the more likely it is that stains can be remedied and table linens salvaged. Spot-treat the stain during service to remove much of it. Soak the table cloth or napkins overnight in water to re lease stains. Tough stains may need to be treated with a prewash stain re mover before soaking. Hot water is usually acceptable for most stains, but con sider soaking items in cool water to treat red wine stains. Also, be mindful of care instructions on cloth products.Besure that stains have been completely removed; otherwise, they can be further heat-set by tum ble-drying the tablecloth. Many people prefer to line-dry linens to protect the nature of the fibers, particularly for fine linens. Table linens can set the scene for a dinner party or other event. Proper selec tion, care and storage can keep them looking beauti ful for years to come.

Learning how to choose and care for table linens can benefit frequent party hosts.

7 Take along a rolling tote to hold your purchases. This minimizes the amount of weight you have to carry and keeps your hands free to keep shopping. 8 Pack hand sanitizer. If you’re shopping at a large venue, the only restrooms might be portable ones, which includedon’tsinks for proper hand-washing. 9 Think ahead on shipping. If you buy something big, will you send it from an overnight shipping service or bus service, or will you need to rent a truck or trailer? 10 If you see something you like, buy it, because when you come back later it will probably be gone.

3. Invest in basics Keep a cheat sheet in your pocket or purse when shopping so you can pick up items when they are on discount. Staples to stock a wardrobe include a basic black dress, classic black dress pants, white dress shirt, A-line skirt in a neutral color, any oc casion tops, and well-fitting darker wash jeans. For men, basics include slacks and blaz ers or a well-fitting suit, dress shirts in a few neutral colors, casual khaki slacks, well-fitting jeans, and casual polo shirts.

4. Set your budget and shopping plan Some people like to estab lish monthly shopping budgets, while others updating their wardrobes prefer to shop sea sonally. Figure out how much you can devote to new clothes (after taking inventory of cur rent items) and stick to that amount. If you’re a person who has difficulty saying “no” when shopping, shop with cash in stead of card. When your funds are depleted, exit the store.

6. Stick to a neutral color palette It’s easier to mix and match newer items with pieces you al ready have if the colors blend. If you want to add pops of col or, do so with accessories such as belts, ties, purses, or jewelry.

2. Convert pants Who hasn’t had the dryer shrink an item that once fit? Over time, the hemline on a dress may creep up or pants just don’t hit at the right spot on the ankle any longer. Rather than wasting an item, with some minor tailoring you can trans form pants into shorts or capris and transform long dresses into short ones.

1 Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be on your feet all day, including time spent on grass and dirt. 2 Map your route to make the best use of your time. Stopping at sites with multiple vendors gives you more shopping time and requires less driving time. 3 Wear sunscreen or a hat or both, and try to keep your face in the shade. 4 Bring water and snacks. 5 Have a tape measure handy to make sure large purchases such as furniture will fit inside your house. 6 Hit the ATM for cash before you head out; most vendors don’t take credit cards.

1. Investigate your closet (and others’) Take stock of what’s already in your closet and drawers. You may forget what you have, par ticularly if you pack away sea sonal items. In addition, check with roommates or family members to see if they have any pieces they don’t use or would like to swap. This keeps every one looking fresh.
