The phrase “On With the Show” dates from a 1929 film musical, later picked up by a couple of rock bands and now, a driving force for Florence’s Last Resort Players (LRP). Anticipating a return to near-normalcy, LRP is planning its 2022 season, recognizing there are still a lot of “ifs, ands and buts.” BUT, IF everything goes as planned, 2022’s first live stage offering will be a small jewel of a two-person musical, “John and Jen.” Cast in the role of John is James McKinney, a talented singer who last appeared in LRP’s “Mamma Mia” as adventurer/travel writer and potential father of Sophie, Bill Austin. The Florence Wine & Chowder Trails, and Great Glass Float Giveaway, a large community-wide tasting and treasure hunt with attendees from all over the west coast, is getting a seasonal makeover. To warm up peoples’ palates on Presidents’ Day weekend, the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce has moved the event to Feb. 18 to 20, 2022. On the menu? Clam, crab, and other seafood chowders by local experts and a variety of Oregon wines direct from the wineries. Organizers expect approximately a dozen or

more samples of each. Saturday will feature wine tasting at several indoor venues in and around Old Town. Sunday will feature chowder tasting at restaurants and galleries in, or a centralized location near, Historic Old Town Florence. Chowder tasters can get a ballot to vote for the region’s best chowder. The gorgeous glass floats will be on display

all weekend around town. Searchers can get a passport and map to approximately three dozen sites to find the artful objects, “hidden” in plain sight, and get the merchant’s stamp. Passports will be available online at FlorenceChamber.com and at the Visitors Center. All the glass floats will be given away Sunday afternoon in Old Town.

CROW announces auditions for production of ‘Frozen Jr.’ at the FEC

CROW is very excited to announce open auditions for a “concert style” production of Disney’s ”Frozen Jr.” The show will be presented April 22, 23 and 24 at the Florence Events Center. “Frozen Jr.” is based on the 2018 Broadway musical, and brings Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Hans, Kristoff and the magical land of Arendelle to life, onstage. The show features all of the memorable songs from the animated film, with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, plus five new songs written for the Broadway production. A story of true love and acceptance between sisters, “Frozen Jr.” expands upon the emotional relationship and journey between Princesses Anna and Elsa. When faced with danger, the two discover their hidden potential and the powerful bond of sisterhood. CROW was founded in 2011, is a Florence-based 501(c)3 organization, and is dedicated to giving back to the community by providing quality performing arts experiences to local youth. CROW will present this sparkling show with full costuming, lighting, and some special effects, BUT limited staging. The show will also be livestreamed for audience members who are not comfortable sitting in the theatre. “We are reducing stage movement as a safety precaution,” said CROW Artistic Director, Melanie Heard. “We want the kids to know in advance that there won’t be any large dance numbers, but that we will still make it fun and exciting for them. We will still give the show the full CROW treatment!” Cast size will be smaller for this production. Rehearsal commitments will be reduced, compared to CROW’s larger scale productions. Masks will be required for auditions and rehearsals. Additional COVID precautions will be taken, and the CROW Board of Directors is currently developing a safety plan to keep all kids healthy during the experience of the show.

2022 Florence Winter Music Festival Workshops & Jam Sessions T he Florence Winter Music Festival will host performance and writing workshops for musicians and open jam sessions for the public again this year. “Jam sessions are sure to reflect the diversity of styles with young and old alike participating,” said Florence Winter Music Festival chairperson Kirk Mlinek. “We have dedicated space for jamming at the Florence Events Center. The room will be clearly marked and available as soon as the doors open on Friday morning (Jan. 28) and close at 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The River House Inn and the Lighthouse Inn are also hosting jam sessions. Don’t leave home without your instrument.” A schedule of jams will be posted at WinterMusicFestival.org. Masks and social distancing protocols will apply at jam sessions. “Our outstanding workshops FESTIVAL from page 3

Bonoff also recorded “Somebody’s Eyes” for the Footloose (1984) soundtrack, had a topten hit single of her own, “Standing Right Next to Me,” from the film “8 Seconds” and just released a new Christmas single with Michael McDonald. The Saturday night shows are sponsored by the River House Inn and the Old Town Inn. The festival gets started with a free-to-the-public mini concert by Kristen Grainger and Dan Wetzel as True North Duo on Friday, Jan. 28, at 4:30 p.m. at Oregon Pacific Bank’s main branch, 1355 Highway 101 in Florence. Wo r k s h o p s are free to any person holding a ticket to any one of the main-stage shows; others may attend for $20 payable at the door.” Masks and social distancing protocols will apply during workshops. Leavitt is a musician, writer, educator and event producer with a passion for bluegrass music. For nearly a decade, Leavitt co-coordinated Taborgrass, an adult bluegrass education program in Portland, and teaches bluegrass singing and how-to-jam work-

She serves on the board of the Oregon Bluegrass Association and is the editor of the association’s quarterly journal, The Oregon Bluegrass Express. All workshops will be held at the Florence Events Center. Workshops include: • Beginner’s Bluegrass Jam with Linda Leavitt on Friday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. • Songwriting workshop with award-winning duo Kristen

Grainger and Dan Wetzel of True North on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 9 a.m. • How to Play as a Duo with John Lowell and Ben Winship of Growling Old Men at 10:30 a.m. John and Ben will explain how it works to play in a duo as opposed to playing in a full band. They will work up a song on the spot to show the process of arranging the tune, figuring out harmony parts, when to play leads and the role of each player. • Blues and Rags Guitar with Mary Flower at 11 a.m. Flower will delve into left and righthand moves that drive both Delta and Piedmont guitar styles. Expect some of her original songs

that will demonstrate syncopation, movable chords, alternating thumb and dead thumb. Students will come away with a few new tunes as well as tools to apply to their own arrangements. Both the ability to read tab and fingerpicking experience will be helpful. Students are encouraged to record the class (audio). COVID-19 protocols will be in place for all jam sessions and workshops, including proof of vaccination or evidence of a negative COVID-19 test within 48 hours of arrival at the venue. Social distancing is required and masks must be worn. Organizers said they will be grateful for the public’s understanding and cooperation and that persons unwilling to comply with these requirements will be asked to leave the building. Visit WinterMusicFestival.org for schedules, artist profiles, tickets and more.

Catch the beat during festival’s Visual Arts Exhibition Syncopation The Gallery Committee of Florence Arts, Culture & Entertainment (FACE) is staging the music-themed visual arts exhibition titled “Syncopation,” which will run in conjunction with the Florence Winter Music Festival on Jan. 28 to 29 at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. All levels of art experience are encouraged to participate. This show has been developed to keep the beat with the Winter Music Festival by showcasing artists’ love of music in 2D, 3D or multimedia art forms. The show will be up during the Winter Music Festival and the month of February 2022 at the Florence Events Center. All art in the show will be available for sale. Application fee is $15 for up to three medium to small works, two medium or one larger work per rod. 3D items can be accepted as well and would be placed in a glass case. Artists are asked to keep 3D items under 20 by 20 by 20 inches in order to fit inside the case. Multimedia art forms, such as video and sound, will need to be presented digitally for viewers to see/hear on their smart devices. If someone is not sure about their presen-
