Charles Suniga and The Angels return to FEC for holiday concert

Tickets are on sale now for the first scheduled Christmas production at the Florence Events Center this year. That’s right! On sale right now! “But Christmas is months away,” you say. Here’s a tip, don’t wait or they’ll be gone. “I know people are not even thinking about Christmas yet. After all, it’s still summer,” said Lonny Whelchel, former Florence radio personality. “Most of the last year or so many have yearned for the opportunity to just get out for dinner, or a movie, anything”. That’s why this Christmas “The Magic is Back” with Charles Suniga and the Angels. This will be an evening of seasonal holiday music kicking off the yuletide on

Dec. 11. “We all want to get back to our traditions, and this has become a new tradition for me at Christmastime. Plus it’s in my hometown,” said Suniga. A Florence native, Suniga has carved out a niche in the music industry with his renditions of tranquil, peaceful compositions established years ago with his “Moments of Peace” concept, captivating many around the world. He was nominated for the Grammy’s. People are invited to mark their calendar for Saturday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 each at the FEC box office or online. For more information about the concert, call the events center at 541-997-1994 or visit www. eventcenter.org.

National Night Out returns

On Aug. 3, the Florence Police Department is hosting its third annual National Night Out event at Miller Park from 6 to 9 p.m. The National Night Out is a community-police event in the United States celebrated by over 16,000 communities for the last 35 years. NNO is meant to increase awareness about police programs in communities, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch and other anti-crime efforts. The Florence Police Department will be providing hot dogs and hamburgers, chips, cotton candy, popcorn, and soft drinks at no cost to the public. In addition, there will be a variety of games and

activities, with visits by police officers, public works, other city staff, firefighters, the U.S. Coast Guard and paramedics. Local youth will also be able to get their face painted, have a balloon animal made and interact with local first responders. This year will feature a live DJ, so people can bring a chair or blanket to sit on and be ready to dance! We request that you don’t bring your pets to the park. Remember, this is a family friendly event, no alcohol or smoking is allowed. Interested in participating? Contact Jamie Gorder with the Florence Police Department at 541-9973515. Sponsorship & Donation Opportunities: The success of the Florence Events Center (FEC), 715 Quince St., over the past 25 years has been made possible by the generous support of its patrons, community members, sponsors and donors. As the city plans for the 25 Year Celebration, staff are looking for support to assist in providing this amazing event for our community. Support of this event ensures that the FEC can provide an evening of fun and games for families to enjoy. The City of Florence is seeking sponsors for the FEC 25 Year Celebration. Full details on the event and how to become a sponsor can be found at eventcenter.org/general/page/ fec-25-year-celebration-sponsorship-information. Sponsorship contributions will be essential to assist in covering the costs of the free concert, the food and beverages, supplies for the fun and games, ice cream and other goodies,

giveaways for attendees, and other logistical needs associated with the event. As a sponsor of the FEC 25 Year Celebration, people’s support will be showcased prior to, during, and after the event. Sponsors will be highlighted in promotional materials, signage at the event, and during the event welcoming. People are asked to submit their sponsorship information to the FEC by Aug. 10 to be included in printed materials. Not interested in being a sponsor, but want to donate? The FEC has prospered over the past 25 years with the help of its generous donors. If you are interested in donating towards this community celebration, contact the FEC staff. We couldn’t provide amazing events like this to our community without the support of our local businesses and partners. If you have any questions regarding the event or the sponsorship and donation opportunities, contact Aleia Bailey at 541-997-1994 or via email at aleia@eventcenter.org.

On Monday, Aug. 30, the Florence Events Center will welcome back its volunteers with a luncheon held at the event center. FEC staff members are excited to show their appreciation for each of them and share new protocols and changes being made to reopen safely. “We rely on our volunteers for so many aspects of our events — from theater ushers, ticket takers, etc., they play a vital role in

the experience patrons have when attending events at the event center,” said FEC staff members Aleia Bailey and Kim Gomez. Volunteering at the Florence Events Center is fun and a wonderful way to meet people in the local community. If you would like to be a volunteer, call Gomez at 541-997-1994 for more details or stop by the FEC, 715 Quince St., office to pick up an application.

of the Umpqua Discovery Center, 409 Riverfront Way, Reedsport, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Aug. 5 and 19. Performances will be by the Endeavors on Aug. 5 and Timberwolf on Aug. 19. The shows will be out-

The Florence Festival of Books (FFOB) will be happening from Sept. 17 to 18 at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St, one week earlier than it normally takes place. This popular event celebrates its 10th anniversary with an impressive lineup of speakers on Friday. All festival activities are open to the public and are free. Popular and greatly admired Oregon authors Bob Welch and William Sullivan provide the star power for the Friday afternoon panel discussion held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. And that evening, Keynote Speaker Melody Carlson takes the stage at 7 p.m. She is one of America’s most prolific and beloved romance authors, with more than 250 books

to her credit and more than one Hallmark Channel movie. All three will be at the book fair the next day. The book fair takes place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and is open to participation by authors and publishers. Applications are available now. For the public, this is an opportunity to speak with the authors who wrote the books. Expect to see many genres during the event: fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, history, mystery, fantasy, romance, memoir. And for wannabe authors, it’s a chance to pitch your idea or show your manuscript to a publisher. For more info, visit www.florencefestival ofbooks.com or www.eventcenter.org.

his summer, students attending the Siuslaw Elementary School Summer Program participated in building their own kid-sized city with a bank, city hall, animal shelter, restaurant, garden, theater, store, gym, observatory, library, art gallery and fire station. Students created the walls, floors, and functions of the city, and no city is complete without an art gallery! Throughout the summer students created, explored, and completed art that filled their city with joy, imagination, and creativity. A display of their creations will be available for viewing at the Florence Events Center in August. The Florence Event Center’s Gallery Committee, housed under the new FACE (Flor-

ence Arts, Culture & Entertainment) non-profit that supports the efforts of the Florence Events Center, formerly known as the Friends of the Florence Events Center, will be helping celebrate the participating students’ show and reception. This summer school program was led by Siuslaw Elementary Music Teacher Amanda Sarles. The summer school team was comprised of 11 elementary school teachers and staff who, after this pandemic year, were excited to keep the school doors open for students to grow in decision making,

inventiveness, language and math concepts in action, as well as positive self-esteem development. Visual arts course instruction was headed by Artist and Siuslaw School educator, Kassy Keppol. Keppol studied at Hollins University, receiving her master’s degree in Children’s Illustration and is the owner and creative behind the local arts organiza-

tion, Dragon Art. Through this program, Keppol brings her professional art and education expertise to our local youth. The students’ works will be for sale, with proceeds going to

the students. If you would like to help continue this program to make it more robust for the futures of our local youth, please contact the Siuslaw School District. Opportunities for contributions will be made available at the event. More information about the show will be available shortly by contacting the Florence Events Center, 541-997-1994.
