‘PROOF’ POSITIVE

The Pulitzer prize winning play “Proof ” will open at Class Act Theatre (CAT) on Friday, Aug. 17, and run for two weekends. This play was originally scheduled to run in 2017, but in keeping with CAT’s commitment to quality, was delayed until the right actors could be recruited for each role. Director James Wellington is pleased to introduce Cara Beere in the lead role as Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius and professor at the University of Chicago, and her struggle with mathematical genius and mental illness. The role of Robert will be played by David Lauria, who veteran audience members will remember received rave reviews when he played this role several years ago. Big sister Claire is played by Polly Fleming, who played the unforgettable role of the dog in “Sylvia” at CAT two seasons ago. Alex Grady, who coincidentally was brilliant in two comedic characters in “Sylvia,” returns to CAT’s stage in the role of Hal, a former graduate student of Robert’s and a new love interest for Catherine. The play explores Catherine’s fear of

The cast of CAT’s “Proof” following in her father’s footsteps, both mathematically and mentally, and her desperate attempts to stay in control. The dialogue draws the audience in and the wit keeps the serious nature of the matter engaging. Friday and Saturday performances will be at 7 p.m. and matinees will be on Sunday at 2 p.m. Seating is reserved. Tickets — $18 for adults and $16 for senior and military — are available online at www. catproductions.org. Tickets will also be available at the door one hour before performances, subject to availability. CAT is located at 509 Kingwood St. For more information, call 541-991-3773.

‘MainlyPiano’ set for three August concerts

K

athy Parsons’ MainlyPiano house concert series will feature three exciting concerts in August. The first concert will feature local pianist/ composer Milo Graamans on Thursday, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. Graamans is a pianist and composer based in Newport. He grew up in Yachats and started taking piano lessons at the age of 4 through the Oregon Music Teachers Association. Graamans went to University of Oregon in 2011 as a music major but dropped out during his second year to finish his musical, “She Loves Me Not,” and to pursue performance opportunities on the coast. In addition to performing his own concerts several times a year, Graamans is the organist and choir director at Yachats Community Presbyterian Church and the accompanist for Central Coast Chorale in Newport. He also plays regularly in pit orchestras for community theater. Graamans is an exceptionally versatile pianist, and his concert will include a mix of original music, classics, ragtime and some

surprises. Pianist/composer Dan Chadburn will be returning on Saturday, Aug.18 at 7 p.m. with special guest Tom Nichols. He will be performing a fundraising concert to benefit Oregon Coast Humane Society. Chadburn’s concerts are relaxed and informal and include a piano improvisation in each half. He released his seventh instrumental album, “Held in the Light,” last year. One of the pieces on the album was an improvisation created during his house concert here in 2016. Each of Chadburn’s last five albums received significant radio airplay worldwide, and his 2016 release “Beyond Words” was nominated for two Album of the Year awards. World-renowned pianist/composer Jim Chappell will be making his first concert appearance in Florence on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. Since the independent release of his breakthrough solo piano collection, “Tender Ritual,” in 1985, Chappell has been acknowledged

as one of contemporary music’s most engaging composers and performers. With 20 albums to his credit, including his 2017 release, “The Best of Jim Chappell,” Chappell has toured world-wide to sold out audiences. Several of his albums have received heavy national and international airplay on Smooth Jazz format radio stations, and his “Over the Top” (1993) reached No. 1 on the national charts. Chappell composed the music for Blake Edwards’ feature film, “Switch” (1991) and his music has been nationally broadcast on a wide variety of television shows. In addition, gold-medal figure skater Brian Boitano skated to Chappell’s beautiful piece, “Gone,” in a nationally televised Thanksgiving broadcast. Reservations are required for all of the concerts by calling Kathy at 541-999-9720 or emailing her at kathypiano@gmail.com. The address and directions will be given when reservations are made. There is a suggested donation of $20 at the door for each concert.

The annual Cranberry Festival is one of southwestern Oregon’s best-known events. It pays tribute to the Bandon community’s No. 1 agricultural crop. The festival is held the second weekend in September, on Sept. 7, 8 and 9. The theme is used on items throughout the festival. The festival kicks off Friday with the blessing of the cranberry harvest at a local cranberry bog at 9:30 a.m., followed by the traditional crowning of the queen at 7 p.m. in the Bandon Sprague Theater. There is also an annual Food Fair, where locals submit their favorite cranberry dishes for judging. The winner of the contest is crowned Queen or King of the Kitchen at the coronation of the Cranberry Queen at 7 p.m. in the Bandon Sprague Theater. The VFW Auxiliary holds a bake sale and bazaar on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and an “All You Can Eat Breakfast” on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The always-popular Festival Parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, and goes through the heart of Old Town after winding its way down Highway 101. People interested in taking part in the parade may phone 541-347-9616. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

August Spotlight Volunteer Mary Lou Brown came to Florence from Yuba City, Calif., in 2003 and started volunteering at the Florence Events Center 6 years ago. Before volunteering, Mary Lou volunteered at Cape Perpetua Visitors Center for 5 years, which she enjoyed very much. She not only volunteers her time as a theater assistant regularly, but also volunteers in the office. Mary Lou is a great help to the staff — and if you call on Tuesday mornings it is her cheerful voice you will be greeted by. She enjoys reading, working in her yard and,

when time allows, visiting her children in Northern California. Mary Lou says the thing she enjoys most about volunteering at the FEC is the people she meets and giving back to her community. Kim’s Quirky Question: What is your favorite sound? — Wind in the trees

Tough topics come alive for CROW teens 2nd Saturday Gallery Tour

Being a teenager in today’s world is no easy feat. There are many pressures that our young adults face, including a myriad of social problems that run the gamut from bullying to teen pregnancy. On Aug. 17 and 18, CROW’s Advanced Acting Program will present two one-act plays that don’t shy away from the tough topics, but rather embrace them as an opportunity for growth and learning. There is something very special about CROW’s twoweek teen summer intensive program, directed by CROW’s Artistic Director Melanie Heard and Assistant Director Genevieve Meltzer. The program began back in 2012 when Heard noticed a need for teens to be challenged and to become part of a new tribe to help them succeed. Over the years, it has grown and flourished. This summer, students have a very large project to pull off. “Just Like I Wanted, by Rebecca Scholssberg, is a One Act that delves into the dangerous realm of teen suicide. Through narration and a series of flashbacks, the main character shows us their previous life, and why they chose to end it. More importantly, the play demonstrates the terrible effect of death on classmates, teachers and family — something that many troubled teens don’t stop to consider. “I Don’t Want To Talk About It, by Bradley Hayward, confronts the daily challenges of growing up through a series of monologues and scenes. Topics include bullying, parents who just don’t get it, rumors and much more. This play deals with the things “teenagers can’t, won’t and don’t want to talk about. “This year, our Advanced Acting students will have to

break through self-perceived barriers in order to effectively present these challenging characters, said Heard. “We hold extremely high standards for them, and I have no doubt that they will meet or exceed every task we give them. CROW encourages the community to come and support the Advanced Acting students’ accomplishments on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. The plays will be presented at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts, 3120 Highway 101 in Florence. Tickets are $10 per person, and will be available at the door only. Tickets are first come, first served, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. All proceeds support future youth programming for the non-profit, as well as help to supply valuable materials such as props, costumes, set pieces, and scripts. For more information about the CROW program, visit www.crowkids.com or contact Heard at 541-999-8641.

Enjoy Florence’s 2nd Saturday Gallery Tour on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. This self-guided tour inspires locals and visiting tourists alike and reinforces Florence as an ever-evolving arts destination. Enjoy great local art, interactions with fellow patrons and artists, receptions, refreshments, live entertainment and community. Daphne John, fabric artist, and Mike McIntyre, jewelry designer, are the August featured artists at Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay St. The reception is Aug. 11 from 3 to 5 p.m. John attributes her artistry success to her varied life experiences: from the hardships of WWII, the discovery of her singing voice to her marriage with a handsome Marine during the Vietnam War, then on to Florence. For her art quilts, she uses her sewing machine like a paintbrush or pallet knife swishing stitches across or around her piece, adding texture and a linear component to the underlying subject. The result is very much like a painting. Contributing to the overall effect, she embellishes her designs with beads, lace, ribbon, pine needles or anything else that comes to her mind. She says, “Having lived in Florence for 20 years I think the final stage of my life has arrived. Being able to still participate as an artist, actor and musician in this community, gives me great pleasure. McIntyre started his journey in lapidary and silversmithing some 45 years ago. Because he handpicks his gemstones, he offers many that are no longer available because of mine closures. He now concentrates on very high-end Jasper turquoise stones found in the Pacific Northwest. Ask him and he’ll tell you about each stone. He begins his distinctive jewelry pieces with these handpicked gemstones. He solders, hammers and twists as he sets the one-of-a-kind gems into sterling silver, or reclaimed brass and copper settings. Leaf-shapes in earrings, and necklaces dangle, catching spears of light. His rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets can take any outfit from ordinary to extraordinary. Experience the work of these exceptional artists all year at Backstreet Gallery.
