ooking for signs of spring? Look no further than the two-day Florence Home & Garden Show at the Florence Events Center. Doors open Friday, March 4, at noon for the 24th annual show. The event runs Friday and Saturday only this year, and admission is free. Show hours are Friday, noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Three Rivers Casino and Resort, Oregon Pacific Bank, Central Lincoln PUD and the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the event, which is hosted by Coast Radio and the Siuslaw News. “We made a few changes to the show as we hopefully exit the two-year pandemic,” explained Jon Thompson, general manager of Coast Radio KCST/ KCFM. “We’re offering free admission to keep the lines from forming and encourage attendance. We also eliminated the four-hour Sunday, but start two

hours earlier on Friday.” The show lineup features 16 new vendor booths that have never been in the show before. “We’ve got five or six vendors demonstrating and selling new household products,” Thompson said. “We’ve got food tasting opportunities and a wide variety of vendor services and

products — from granite countertops and cabinets to electricians and fencing.” Laurel Bay Garden’s Centerpiece Design will feature indoor plants & décor, native landscaping and water features. The Home & Garden Show incorporates more than 40

vendor exhibit booths, landscape design, food tasting, demonstrations and giveaways. There will be a grand prize drawing for $500 in cash, a $250 gift certificate from Laurel Bay Gardens and a hybrid water heater and Nest thermostat from Central Lincoln PUD.

In addition, the American Rhododendron Society Florence Chapter will be giving away a Rhododendron each hour of the show. “March is the start of spring from a lot of people’s perspective,” Thompson said. “The home show weekend is the weekend that the clocks change again. And March tends to be when we enter our spring phase in the Florence area. For people wanting to work on gardens and yards and do landscaping or have some projects they want to get going for the summer, the timing on it makes it a really viable point in the year to do it.” The Oregon Health Authority requires masks at this time and Florence Events Center and show producers are asking that everyone follows the mandate. For more information, contact Coast Radio at 541-9979136.

linator abodes and bird houses,” said owner Lisa Walter-Sedlacek. “And the show wouldn’t be the show unless we have Bamboo Dave featuring beautiful bamboo plants, including clumping varieties, perfect for containers and small spaces in the landscape.” After the home show, be sure to visit Laurel Bay Garden Center, just three minutes north of Florence. “We are super excited for spring and all the new plants, growing supplies, and gardening decor that is starting to arrive at the nursery,” said manager Joey Sparks. “We carry the highest quality plants and organic soils for your landscape, and focus on giving our customers ideas and valuable advice to help them cultivate happiness in their own gardens.” In addition to flowers, trees and shrubs, Laurel

Low-Cost Ways To Revamp Living Areas Home improvement projects require substantial financial investment. But just because a homeowner wants to bring a fresh look indoors doesn’t mean they have to break the bank along the way. Living rooms are some of the most frequently used spaces in a home, and they can use an update from time to time to stay on trend or to make the area more functional for a changing family dynamic. Here are some budget-friendly ideas for breathing new life into living room designs.

Lighter and brighter colors are on trend. A can or two of paint can do wonders for updating a space without a large financial commitment. Pair that new paint color with new window coverings and complementary throw pillows to pull the theme together with minimal expense. Update the flooring Tired, outdated carpeting or other flooring can use an overhaul. While solid hardwood flooring may be preferable, there are many types of laminate flooring that mimic the looks of popular wood colors and styles for a fraction of the cost. Plus, many are sold at home improvement retailers and even at warehouse clubs or online for reasonable prices. Laminate flooring also may be a potential DIY job for a skilled homeowner, saving even more money.

Establish the budget Homeowners should figure out how many dollars they can designate to a living room makeover before purchasing supplies or hiring out the work. Figure out the scope of the remodel, visit stores or suppliers to price out materials, get estimates from contractors, and then plan for some unforseen circumstances along the way Introduce a fireplace to determine if this type of renovation is Fireplaces were once hot commodities, affordable. If not, scale things back until but that popularity waned in the 1970s the project more closely aligns with your and 1980s. Homeowners with chimneys budget. may discover a fireplace was boarded over and the bare bones still exist that can be Change the paint color renovated to bring back character. also are ventless freestanding units that are quite affordable that can mimic the look of a built-in fireplace. Reupholster instead of replace furniture There’s no need to throw away quality furniture if the fabric is the only thing impeding design. New upholstery or even a slipcover can update designs.

Conquer clutter Rather than adding something to the living room, remove clutter to give the room a more airy feel. This can instantly change the look of the room. Use cord covers to tame plugs for electronics and remove unnecessary furniture from the room. Improve lighting Another easy and often inexpensive fix is to change lighting fixtures, including using brighter, more energy efficient LED bulbs, and to assess lighting needs to eliminate dark corners of rooms that can make the space seem drab. Living room spaces in need of an update often can benefit from improvements that go easy on the wallet.

2020, we formed Metolius Hemp Co. with a vision and a lot of hard work. “From seed to satisfaction” means we grow our own hemp here in Bend, Ore., at our four-acre organic farm using only Oregon CBD seed bank genetics, and then use our proprietary enhancement processes to handcraft our products on our custom production floor to help our customers and club members with four main wellness issues: 1. Stress & Anxiety 2. Sleep 3. Pain & Inflammation 4. Tobacco Replacement As vendors, we bring enthusiasm and fun to any event, as well as truly unique CBD wellness products. We provide free samples to anyone interested in trying CBD and spend the majority of our time educating people on the differences between CBD, CBG and CBN. Also, on the health benefits of cannabinoids and their role in the homeostasis of the endocannabinoid system in the human body. As craftspeople, we use the highest quality flower, extracts and concentrates with unique processes to make user friendly and efficacious wellness products. Our products are non-psychoactive and 100% federally compliant. We are a licensed hemp handler by the OLLC and the ODA. We are also an ODA Food Grade Certified facility. See VENDORS page 7C

Celebrate the arrival of spring Spring is a season of rebirth in more ways than one. Spring is when certain animals emerge from hibernation, and many species lay eggs or give birth. Flowers and trees also bloom in spring, providing spectacular foliage and awe-inspiring color. People also may feel like they have a new lease on life as they shake away the doldrums of winter and embrace longer hours of sunlight and warmer temperatures. The arrival of spring is worthy of celebration, and these activities and ideas can be enjoyable ways to spend the first day of spring. • Spend time outdoors. One is never too old for a picnic in a park or a bike ride along the trails. Spending time outdoors is beneficial because it exposes people to sunlight, which is a precursor to the development of vitamin D. Vitamin D affects muscles, joints and tissues. It also can affect mood. • Plant a tree. Honor the first day of spring, and Earth Day shortly thereafter, by planting trees. Trees provide habitats for wildlife, create shade, reduce air pol-

lution by filtering the air, and produce oxygen. A sapling is a manageable tree to plant and something children can do. • Enjoy spring crafts. Grab an inexpensive canvas and paint a landscape that is in full bloom. Use quick-set plaster to create stepping stones embedded with mosaic glass pieces for color that can be added to the backyard. • Host a spring potluck. Put fresh spring vegetables and fruits on display. Options include artichokes, apricots, asparagus, carrots, dandelion greens, and radishes. Put together a pasta primavera, which essentially is a spring pasta dish laden with fresh vegetables. • Decorate with flowers. Bring fresh flowers indoors and put them on display in vases or table centerpieces. Cut stems on a 45-degree angle underwater to help flowers last longer. In addition, choose floral themed curtains and throw pillows to add some spring decor. Spring is a time of year when people can enjoy seasonal activities that make the most of the warmer weather and blooming landscape.

How to prepare landscapes for new plants New plants can add much to a landscape. Whether they’re replacing plants that are no longer thriving or being added to supplement an existing landscape, new plants are an affordable way to give a home’s exterior a whole new look. Much consideration is given to which plants to add to a landscape. That’s understandable, as homeowners want to choose plants that will thrive and won’t compromise the health of surrounding plants and trees. Before planting or even choosing plants, it’s important to plan for new additions to a landscape. Preparing the landscape can inform homeowners about which plants to purchase and can ensure they thrive after planting. • Document sunlight ex-

posure. Plants have different needs, and one of the biggest differences between species is the amount of sunlight they need to thrive. According to Penn State Extension, plants characterized as “full sun” require six or more hours of sunlight per day, while those considered “partial sun” need between four and six hours of sun-

light per day. Plants designated as “partial shade” need two to four hours of sun per day, while “shade” plants need less than two hours of sunlight a day. Documenting sunlight exposure in advance gives homeowners an idea of which plants should be planted and where they should be planted. Jot down these observations in a jour-

nal over several weeks and then choose plants that will thrive in each area. • Test the soil. A soil pH test is a simple and quick way to determine the acidity of soil. Soil pH levels will indicate how likely a plant is to thrive in a given spot. High levels won’t necessarily mean an area should be avoided, as some plants thrive in acidic soils. Additional soil tests can determine other characteristics, such as the nutrient levels of soil and the amount of organic matter it contains. Each of these variables can help homeowners make the right choices as they introduce new plants to their properties. • Consider local wildlife. If local wildlife makes its presence known on a property, homeowners may want to take proactive steps prior to planting anything new. A new fence might prevent animals like deer from getting in, but that likely won’t do much to repel smaller animals like squirrels, rabbits or foxes. If wildlife is a concern, homeowners can seek advice at their local garden center about which plants certain animals are likely to ignore. Homeowners who want to attract wildlife can do the same in reverse, choosing plants wildlife will be drawn to. Homeowners who want to deter wildlife should erect fencing or other barriers prior to planting. • Clear space if necessary. Plants grow up and out, and cramped quarters can make it hard for new plants to thrive. Some may thrive but only at the expense of other plants. If necessary, clear space prior to planting to ensure plants have ample space to grow. Some pre-planting landscape preparation can ensure new plants thrive.

Tips for negotiating with contractors Spring is the season for fixing up a home. Homeowners who aren’t interested in doing the work themselves turn to contractors to ensure the job is done not only to code, but on time and efficiently. After receiving an initial estimate from a contractor, homeowners may wonder if there is any additional wiggle room in contractors’ costs. Certain contractors are willing to negotiate while others are firm in their prices. However, learning the basics of negotiation can put homeowners in position to save money on dream renovations.

heats up during certain seasons or times of year. General contractors may be more willing to negotiate for a lower price depending on when their busy season may be. Jobs may slow down in winter, for example.

Do your homework Getting the best price typically require shopping around and not settling on the first bid. Experts recommend getting at least three estimates on the same job — and be sure to let each contractor know that you are soliciting multiple bids. This alone may entice a specific contractor to give you his or her best offer up front. Avoid simply choosing the lowest bid. Look at quality of work, reputation and reviews. If you like a costly contractor more than another, see if that contractor is willing to match a lower bid to win the job.

Ask to do a portion Be honest with the contractor about your budget and figure out if there is any way for you to do some of the work to lower costs. The contractor can give you jobs that are within your abilities, which can shave dollars off the final price.

Talk about supplies Even after getting a good bid, you may be able to speak with your contractor about lowering costs even more by choosing less costly supplies. Find out if contractors can source materials from a low-cost supplier. In addition, discuss if you can purchase your own supplies.

Know your rights & laws Understand the laws governing contract language in your state or province. Contracts should also spell out the change order process so that expectations of changes and costs will be known in advance. These are just some of the tactics homeowners can use Pick the right season when negotiating the price As with other industries, of home remodels or imhome renovation work provements.

Planning ahead is vital to a successful renovation Remodeling projects are significant undertakings. Homeowners must consider a host of variables before any such project can begin. While planning ahead may take time, it is essential to ensuring successful completion of a renovation project. Consider these pre-renovation planning pointers to help any job go smoothly.

Determine your motivation for renovating Renovation projects often involve balancing needs and wants, and determining if a project is a necessity or a luxury can set the timeline and course of the project. Is the roof leaking? If so, immediate action is necessary. Could the kitchen be a bit more functional? If the kitchen is still manageable, a homeowner may be able to wait a little bit to get better prices on appliances or contracting services. Separating needs from wants helps homeowners map out a viable timeline that maximizes productivity and affordability.

A permit may be issued the day the application is submitted, while other cities and towns may issue permits up to two or more weeks later. Factor permit fees and processing times into the renovation plan. If it comes to light a homeowner did work without a required permit, he or she may face penalties; may have to tear out work done to have it inspected or redone; some may be unable to sell a home until permits have been obtained and work has been done to code. Homeowners insurance coverage also may be affected if homeowners do not obtain the proper permits. Other considerations when planning a renovation include writing out a strict budget, gathering inspiration, drawing up toscale renovation plans, pouring over material reviews, and getting recommendations for reliable professionals to do the job. How to pick the right trees for your landscaping

Trees benefit a landscape by serving both aesthetic and utilitarian functions. A home surrounded by healthy green trees can be a sight to behold, and those same trees can benefit surrounding plants and wildlife at the same time. As appealing as trees are, not all trees and landscapes make for the perfect match. The Arbor Day Foundation notes the importance of planning when designing a landscape. Planning ensures the trees homeowners ultimately choose for their properties will grow well in the soil and moisture present in their yards. Careful consideration of a handful of variables can help homeowners determine which trees will make the best fit for their properties. Height Homeowners must consider the projected height of a tree before planting it. Avoid trees that will bump into anything when fully grown, as that can adversely affect surrounding greenery

Homeowners can have their soil tested to determine which trees will thrive in it. Local garden centers can be a great resource for homeowners who want insight as to which trees will thrive in their local climates.

Canopy spread Trees grow out as well as up, so it’s important to consider their potential width at maturity as well. The ADF sizing guide can help homeowners get an idea of how wide a tree is likely to be at maturity. Trees that spread and pose a safety hazard. The ADF’s tree sizing guide can be accessed at https:// www.arborday.org/trees/ rightTreeAndPlace/size.cfm and serves as an invaluable resource for homeowners who want to plant new trees around their properties.

for privacy can consider trees with quick growth rates or purchase more mature trees that are already near full growth. Those who are not in need of instant transformation can try trees with slower growth rates, which the ADF notes typically live longer than fast-growing species.

out quite a bit don’t necessarily need to be avoided, but it’s important that they’re planted far enough apart so they don’t adversely affect surrounding plants. In addition, wide trees that are planted too close together can make the landscape appear crowded, taking something away from its aesthetic appeal. Trees serve many functions on a property. Choosing the right trees for a landscape requires careful consideration of a host of variables.

Container gardening for beginners

Many gardeners find getting their hands dirty while tending to a garden can be a great form of escapism. In addition, growing one’s own fruits and vegetables can be great for the environment. Though it’s easy to as-

sume gardening is an activity exclusive to homeowners with their own yards, that’s not the case at all. Container gardening can make it possible for anyone to garden, regardless of where they live. The benefits of container gardening go beyond

making gardening accessible to everyone. Many plants grown in containers are less susceptible to disease than plants grown in the soil, which can reduce reliance on potentially harmful pesticides. Container gardens also tend to be easier to maintain than traditional gardens, making gardening more doable for people with especially hectic schedules. Container gardening can be simple, and novices can consider these tips when planning and ultimately tending to their first gar-

COMMON DIY MISTAKES

Pride tends to swell when homeowners successfully complete do-it-yourself projects on their homes. In addition to saving homeowners money, DIY projects provide a unique way for men and women to personally connect with their homes. The ability to look at a finished project and say it’s a result of your own handiwork can make a home feel more your own. As fun and fulfilling as DIY projects can be, they also can be nerve-wracking and induce anxiety. When DIY projects falter, fixing them can prove costly, as homeowners typically must call in contractors to correct their mistakes and get a project back on track. That results in additional labor and material costs that might have been avoidable, especially for homeowners who make an effort to avoid some common DIY mistakes.

1. Failure to secure permits Even though homeowners own their homes, that does not mean they have carte blanche to do what they want with them. Many renovation projects require homeowners to secure permits before projects can commence. Some may even require additional permits as the projects advance. If proper permits are not secured, homeowners may be fined and projects may be nixed, regardless of how much money homeowners have spent up to that point. Before beginning a home renovation project, homeowners should always contact their local permit office to determine if any permits are required. Bankrate.com notes that permits are often required for any project larg-

er than painting or wallpapering.

2. Overestimating your abilities DIY television shows make home renovation projects look easy, but reality suggests otherwise. Homeowners with little or no experience renovating a home may want to take classes before they think about starting a project on their own. Even online tutorials tend to make jobs appear easier than they are. Roofing and plumbing projects tend to be best left to the professionals, as these projects can be either dangerous or vulnerable to disaster if not addressed by trained professionals. 3. Incorrect materials Whether it’s to save money or a byproduct of inexperience, DIYers do not always choose the correct materials for a job. Experienced contractors have ample experience working with all sorts of materials and are therefore in a unique position to recommend the best materials for any given job. That resource is not available for DIYers, who must perform ample research before beginning a job so the project involves the most appropriate materials. Incorrect materials can be a sunken cost that derails a project, but even jobs completed using incorrect materials may need to be redone a lot more quickly than those that employed the right materials the first time. Many home renovation projects can be completed without the help of professional contractors., especially when homeowners take steps to avoid some of the more common mistakes made by DIYers.

dens. • Conduct a light audit. Walk around your home to determine where your plant can be placed so it gets as much light as it needs to thrive. Some plants need a lot of light, while others can thrive with a lot less. By conducting a light audit before choosing plants, you can determine if your home is most conducive to plants that require a lot of a light or those that need little light to get by. • Make sure containers have ample drainage. Drainage holes are essential

when choosing containers. Waterlogged soil can be fatal for plants, so there must be ample drainage in the container. Just make sure the size of the holes allow excess water to drain out from the pot. • Don’t forget to feed your plants. Potting soil won’t necessarily have nutrients that plants can access, so many container gardeners must fertilize the soil so plants can thrive. Watering with diluted fish emulsion, seaweed extract or compost tea can help plants thrive. Feed once every two

weeks to start, adjusting the schedule depending on how the plants respond. • Seek advice. Local gardening centers can be great resources for novice container gardeners. Such centers can recommend plants with a history of thriving in the area as well as plants that might be more compatible when containers are placed next to one another. This kind of gardening can bring gardening to any home, whether it’s a lightfilled private home or an apartment where sunlight is sparse.

Bring back beneficial bees Bees, birds and butterflies play integral roles in pollinating many of the crops humans rely on for sustenance. The National Pollinator Garden Network, through the National Wildlife Federation, recently launched the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge, an effort to increase the amount of nectar and pollen food sources as the organization aims to reverse the alarming decline of pollinators such as honey bees, native bees and monarch butterflies. Many people are afraid of bees because of their propensity to sting. Unlike their wasp and yellow-jacket cousins, honeybees and bumblebees are much more docile and content to hop from bloom to bloom without paying humans any mind. The only time such bees may resort to stinging is if someone inadvertently steps on them. Bees are beneficial for yards. Gardener’s Supply Company says one out of every three bites of food humans take depends on a pollinator. That’s because about 150 crops grown in the United States depend on pollinators. Even though there are 4,000 species of native or wild bees in the continental United States, many populations are in decline. According to the Pollinator Partnership,

various areas of North America have lost more than 50 percent of their managed honeybee colonies in the past 10 years. Bringing these important pollinators back will take a little work, but it is possible. • Plants that offer cover can be attractive to bees that desire a respite from the sun and heat. Coleus and other ground cover offerings can be handy. • Offer water in shallow dishes, as even bees need a cool drink to stay hydrated. • Bees like various plants, so plant more than one species. Some plants that bees tend to like include alyssum, aster, geranium, bee balm, poppies and clover. • When planting, include native species. • Brush piles, dry grasses and dead woods offer nesting areas for bees. • The Gardener’s Supply Company also says that bees find blue, purple and yellow flowers most appealing. Opt for more of these hues when planning gardens. • Above all, avoid using pesticides in the yard. Even organic ones can be toxic to bees and other pollinators, and they may contribute to colony collapse disorder. With these techniques in mind, homeowners can attract more bees to their yards and gardens, which can benefit bees and humans alike.
