2012 INNOVATIVE EDUCATION CONFERENCE

MESSAGE FROM CONFERENCE CHAIR How we can create and sustain a healthcare workforce that recognizes the role of evidence in decision making and is attuned to lifelong learning? With the exponential growth of information in healthcare, the goal has never been more clear: leverage this information to improve patient safety and organizational performance. Yet, orienting practice around a continually evolving evidence base requires different ways of thinking. The 2012 Innovative Education Conference has the answers you need—from a big-picture understanding of evidence-based learning and data-driven assessment to the development and delivery of the latest clinical and virtual simulation technologies. The conference will provide you with the tools you need to build a sustainable learning strategy to improve workplace performance, drive your business strategy, and most importantly, to LEARN DIFFERENTLY. Healthcare organizations are discovering the many advantages of tapping their own talent and building “communities” that foster knowledge sharing. No single person or organization can have all the right answers. It’s only as you invite other experts — socially network — into your training development that you will make dramatic leaps in value. To our distinguished faculty, we offer our sincere appreciation for their insights, commitment, and passion. And thanks to all of you, our colleagues and friends from across the healthcare spectrum, for joining us. We extend a warm welcome to each of you. FLIP ORLEY

Flip Orley has been seen on “Entertainment Tonight,” “The Martin Short Show,” “Comic Strip Live,” the “Ricki Lake Show,” “Maury Povich” and “Space Ghost Coast To Coast.” It is his uncanny way with subjects, his finely tuned power of suggestion and rapid-fire delivery that keeps audiences coming back for more. Orley prefers to entertain by bringing out the creativity from his volunteers and enlightening his audiences...often with lasting beneficial effects on those who have been inducted.

COMIC HYPNOTIST Imaginative Role-Enactment: Hands-On Experiential Learning

Flip Orley studied psychology at University Of Arizona with the intention of becoming a clinical hypnotist. It was while majoring in psychology at the University of Arizona, however, that Orley discovered stand-up comedy. Hypnosis took second place for a time as Orley honed his comedic skills in small clubs around the country eventually merging the two. The rest is comedy club history as marquees across the nation invariably read “Flip Orley/ Held Over By Popular Demand”, for up to 12 weeks at a time. Realizing the value of the clinical side of hypnotism, Flip Orley developed techniques in seminars and workshops to help people get in touch with their inner strength through the power of their own subconscious minds. Flip Orley has performed his shows on television, in comedy night clubs, theatres, for fortune 500 companies, and in casino showrooms. When Flip Orley takes the stage and rolls up his sleeves, his audience can expect two hours of fun and an experience they will never forget.

KEYSHA GAMOR, PH.D.

MOBILE LEARNING Learning in Virtual Worlds

Dr. Gamor has more than 15 years of experience in teaching, instructional systems design (ISD), web design, gaming, simulations, mobile learning, pedagogy, and research methods. Though the more recent years of her career have been primarily in the private sector, she maintains a robust research and publishing initiative, determined to remain ‘bleeding edge’ and connected to her passion for teaching, researching, and learning. While she began her professional career as a middle school teacher where she taught a variety of subjects from English to mathematics, she dedicated a large portion of her early professional life to Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland, where she was a Professor of English Composition and Literature. While there, she designed and piloted the college-wide English Composition Distance Learning Program. She was adjunct faculty coordinator, and worked with Maryland Higher Education Council to establish state-wide standards in English composition. Dr. Gamor also studied and completed coursework and foreign language requirements in a doctoral program in English, with a concentration in cultural anthropology at the University of Maryland. She was later awarded a fellowship from the Smithsonian Institute to continue her research in folkways, language and literature. This foundation around ‘the narrative’ continues to inform the way she approaches learning design in virtual environments. Dr. Gamor’s tenure in higher education was punctuated by her ISD consultative services in the private sector, where she continues to focus the more recent part of her career. She has worked for large consulting firms such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Computer Sciences Corporation, General Dynamics Information Technology, and ICF International. Her work in the private sector is largely in support of training initiatives in civilian, military, and corporate environments. Dr. Gamor is recognized as a thought leader in her field, and she currently serves on the board of the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) and is a member of the Association of Virtual Worlds (AVW). She is also part of the IEEE development effort to create a virtual world standard. Currently, Dr. Gamor is Education Innovation Coordinator at the National Defense University, where she leads all virtual world initiatives,.
