As 261 estereoscopias da Colecção Artur Carlos da Silva Freire foram adquiridas com os restantes 1179 documentos do fundo à bisneta do autor, Piedade D’Orey, em 21 de Abril de 2004. Estes diapositivos p/b de gelatina e prata em vidro têm dimensões (8,5 x 17cm) ligeiramente maiores que as do formato em vidro mais generalizado, o que favorece o seu visionamento, aproximando-o do visionamento de cartões estereoscópicos. Conhecido pela sua actividade na vida política no período final da monarquia portuguesa, Arthur Freire foi um fotógrafo amador com um interesse muito notório por monumentos, pelos temas fluviais e navais e por embarcações, que predominam nesta colecção. Outro dos aspectos distintivos da colecção é o elevado número de vistas de interiores luxuosos de edifícios históricos, nomeadamente do Palácio das Necessidades e dos Paços do Concelho. Merecem ainda menção as imagens da família real – D. Carlos, D. Amélia e outras figuras são fotografadas em acontecimentos públicos e acompanhadas de membros da família real inglesa. Destacam-se, por outro lado, quer pela qualidade, quer pelo interesse, as estereoscopias que Arthur Freire produziu de paisagens campestres e cenas de trabalho rural, ilustrando os modos de vida de camponeses no final do séc. XIX e início do séc. XX, bem como a austeridade e a secura da paisagem. A sua
The 261 stereo photographs of the Arthur Carlos da Silva Freire’s Collection were acquired with the remaining 1,179 documents, from the author’s great-granddaughter, Piedade D’Orey, on 21 April 2004. These b/w silver gelatin glass slides have slightly larger dimensions (8.5 x 17 cm) than the most common glass plate formats, which favor their viewing, bringing it closer to the viewing experience produced by stereoscopic paper cards. Known for his work in political life in the final period of the Portuguese monarchy, Arthur Freire was an amateur photographer with a very notorious interest in monuments, inland waterways and maritime themes and vessels, which dominate the collection. Another of its distinctive aspects is the large number of luxurious interior views of historic buildings, including the Palace of Necessidades and the Town Hall. Also worth mentioning are his images of the royal family. Portuguese King Carlos and Queen Amélia along with other royal members are photographed in public events and often in the company of the English royal family. Remarkable, on the other hand, either for the quality and interest, are Arthur Freire’s stereo views of the Portuguese countryside and rural work scenes, illustrating the livelihoods of farmers at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as the austerity and dryness of
