When myself and Mollie spoke to Chris in his office during a Tuesday lunch, we noticed his amiability and welcoming presence. As students, we are all busy with our A levels and BTECs during college hours so maybe you’ve not had the opportunity to meet Chris; and only know him as the principal. That’s how I felt before our interview, but even after a couple of minutes we had a grasp of the man behind the suit. “What are you most excited/ looking forward to this year?”

I would have to say the cocurricular programme and the opportunities the students have in accessing a community of people with similar interests as themselves.

“Could you tell us briefly three things which you love about SJD?” “I feel as if the pandemic hasn’t fundamentally changed the mechanism of learning, but it has highlighted the invisible challenges students face in every day-to-day life.

Because of this the senior 4 leadership team have an extra emphasis on support systems within the college this year and are working hard to make sure every student gets the support they need.

The wider co-curriculum, such as our diversitas group and women’s society helps improve well-being and provide social opportunities for students."

“How do you feel stepping into the role of principal of SJD?”

“I am firstly humbled and feel it is a great honour to step into Kerry Kirkwood’s shoes knowing the amazing job she has done for college over the years. On a personal level, I’m excited to work with the senior leadership team to uphold the college's high standards and positive culture. 1) The people and community within the college, especially working with students.

2) The culture. I enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and the high aspirations of the students here.

3) The high quality teaching and learning, combined with how we are always trying to make it better.

“How do you think the pandemic has changed the way we learn?” St u d en ts
