HEALTH ALLIANCE FOR AUSTIN MUSICIANS
Keeping Music in Austin Alive & Well Since 2005
Dear Music Patrons & Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) Supporters of Central Texas,
As the co-chairs of HAAM Day, we could not be more thrilled by the return of one of the truly special days in Austin music. This vibrant celebration brings together individuals, organizations, and local businesses in support of the lifesaving services Health Alliance for Austin Musicians provides to thousands of local musicians every year.
HAAM Day stands as a testament to the power of community, music, and philanthropy. The day has evolved from raising $57,000 in year one, to our lofty but attainable goal of over $900,000 this year! Hundreds of musicians will “take the stage” across the city – playing historic venues like Antone’s to non-traditional venues like your neighborhood H-E-B. Every single performance taking place on HAAM Day highlights the incredible talent our community has to offer and serves as a critical reminder of the importance of providing healthcare services to our local musicians.
Austin’s music industry is a cultural cornerstone that drives over $2 billion in economic activity annually. Yet most musicians face unique and increasing challenges when it comes to remaining healthy and thriving. HAAM remains a beacon of hope, offering access to comprehensive affordable healthcare that helps sustain musician’s well-being and artistic contributions. For many musicians, HAAM is what keeps them in Austin and in the music industry.
As representatives from PNC and SXSW we understand how invaluable HAAM is to the Live Music Capital of the World, and we are thrilled to step up together this year to power HAAM Day. We are committed to HAAM’s mission and dedicated to the well-being of the vibrant community of musicians that call Austin home. We know a continued investment in HAAM Day underscores the events significance in Austin’s cultural and economic landscape – helping our city remain an emblem of creativity, innovation, and artistic expression.
But our support is just the beginning. We believe that together with the support of esteemed partners like C3 Presents, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Cirrus Logic, H-E-B, Brown Distributing, Cousins Properties, and the many, many partners listed in the pages that follow, and of course you, HAAM Day will continue to raise awareness, funds, and spirits for years to come. We invite you to join us at any (or every) performance taking place on HAAM Day, and to consider the impact your support will have on keeping music in Austin alive and well.
Thank you once again for your unwavering support. And importantly, Happy HAAM Day!
Sincerely,
HAAM Day 2023 Co-Chairs Laura Johnson, VP, Director of Client & Community Relations, PNC Bank Steven Gonzalez, Regional President, PNC Bank Stephen Jeffrey, Austin Market Leader, PNC Private BankJann

Baskett, Co-President & Chief Brand Officer, South by Southwest Forrest, Co-President & Chief Programming Officer, South by Southwesthaam saves musicians’ careers: felipe granados
Many Austinites will know drummer
Felipe Granados (aka Fajita Flats) from his bands Loteria, The Bad Lovers, Fajita Flats y la Familia, and many others. Or perhaps from one of his DJ gigs.
“I graduated from high school in 2007 and moved to Austin in 2008. I started playing music when I was about 13 years old. Started playing in bands in high school. My friends and I would often travel to Austin to see shows,” Felipe said. “I quickly realized ‘I need to move to Austin, that’s where the music is!’”
After years cutting his teeth, refining his musical chops in the clubs, Felipe was living out his childhood dreams: playing music professionally with friends, going on tour with bands, playing multiple instruments among multiple genres.
Like so many musicians in our community, when Covid shut down the music industry, Felipe found himself in a difficult place.
“I got sober on December 15, 2021. Before that, when the pandemic hit, I was in a really bad spot,” Felipe acknowledged. “I was at the height of struggling with alcoholism. I wasn’t taking care of myself.”
Felipe found clarity in his life due to his newfound sobriety. “I started working out regularly, taking better care of myself, and then I signed up for HAAM. Before I thought all I needed was drugs and alcohol to keep pain away. I didn’t need any doctors. Tequila and cocaine were my medication,” Felipe explained.
With self-medication no longer an option, Felipe realized it was time to see a doctor about a pain he had in his testicles.
Thinking the pain may be related to a hernia, Felipe visited his doctor, with assistance from HAAM. After receiving a scan, his primary care doctor broke the news that he had a mass in one of his testicles.
“I started to get scared. So I continued to let a higher power into my life, which was also a direct reflection of my sobriety. And even though I was scared, I had HAAM with me right there through the whole process … and that made it a lot easier.”
HAAM was able to assist thanks to our healthcare provider relationships, and thanks to donors and supporters like you.
“I never would have been able to afford to get treated or have the courage to try to go through all the treatments. I would have over $30,000 in medical debt without HAAM’s help,” Felipe confirmed. “HAAM staff were calling me and checking on me every step of the way.”
Felipe is now in remission. He has regular visits to his oncologist, a urologist, and a radiologist, all of which are covered with co-payments. “Every two months I get an MRI to make sure
everything is still good. My copay is $100. Without HAAM’s help, the normal price would be $2,000.”
“Without HAAM, I would have been biting my nails worrying about all these bills,” Felipe continued. “With HAAM, you have a community that supports you. It’s like the same brotherhood & sisterhood you have with other musicians: we are all here to help each other.
“I thought I loved to drink and party … but what I truly love is music. I don’t miss the drinking or the partying. Now I get to fully show up and play music. That little 13-year kid version of me who first fell in love with playing music is now on stage with me. It’s a beautiful thing.”
Help keep music in Austin alive and well.
