Here are suggested tasks to help keep your spring checklist on track. 1. CHECK YOUR ROOF. Your roof may have taken a beating following the weight of snow and ice. Following the winter thaw is a great time to check roof shingles
and overall structure. 2. ACCESS DRIVEWAYS AND SIDEWALKS. Just like there are potholes in the street from severe weather damage, your driveway or sidewalk may need a fresh repaving to prevent accidents or continued damage. 3. REPAINT. After the effects of winter, everything from siding to decking may need to be repaired and/or repainted. 4. CHECK FOR LEAKS. From your roof to your basement, be sure to look for signs of unwanted moisture. 5. CHECK YOUR HOME’S HVAC SYSTEM. How do I prepare my home for spring?
W
ith the change of seasons, it’s time to update your home task list and get ready for spring. Don’t overlook basic maintenance during your preparations. These tasks may be among the least glamorous, but they’re PAUL F.P. crucial to keeping POGUE your home in tiptop shape. Get an HVAC inspection: You should hire a professional to assess your HVAC system twice a year—shortly before you begin to use heating in fall, and again when you begin to use air conditioning in spring. A thorough inspection will address the thermostat, all electrical connections, lines and hoses, clean the condenser coil, all seals, refrigerant levels, the compressor,
fan blades and all moving parts. They’ll also make sure the drain pain and evaporator coil surface are clean. An HVAC inspection usually takes only an hour or two and costs between $50 and $200. You may also have one available if you maintain a yearly service plan. Also, as always, check your HVAC filter and replace it if needed. Clean your gutters: Branches, debris and leaves can build up on your roof or in your gutters over the course of the winter. A good gutter cleaning gives water a clear path off your roof, prevents roof leaks and helps preserve your foundation and basement walls. Also, verify that your downspouts direct water at least three feet away from
your walls. On average, you can expect to pay between $100 and $190 for gutter cleaning. Check the outdoors: Cleaning up the lawn, flower and garden beds. Clear out all branches and debris, including leaves and yard waste in flower beds. Turn on any closed exterior water lines you shut down for the winter. Unpack and reattach hoses, and check for leaks. If you have an irrigation system, ensure it’s turned back on according to local codes. You may need to contact a qualified professional to check out the system and perform a backflow test. Get a professional to tune up your lawnmower and sharpen the blades. Dull blades tear grass, and can damage your lawn in the long term.
If you’re planting this year, perform a soil test to determine your pH levels and nutrients. You can purchase a DIY test, but it’s best to have a local extension office or a professional help you understand the results and develop a plan to address your soil. Other exterior issues: Take a close look at your roof and attic. The effects of snow and ice buildup often don’t usually reveal themselves until spring. If you notice interior water damage or had significant ice damming over the winter, contact a reputable roofing company to perform and inspection. You may have damage you can’t see. In addition, if you had ice dams, you may need to add insulation to your attic.
Inspect your deck or fence for safety issues. In particular, wood structures can deteriorate over time due to moisture or insect damage. Loose fasteners, railings and stairs can present hazards. A professional can conduct an inspection and address issues. Also, check your staining, sealing or paint job to see if it needs to be redone. Paul F. P. uestion: Dear Ed: Last year I remodeled my bathroom and realized I made a mistake. To save money, I had a standard drop-in bathroom lavatory sink installed, when I really wanted a vessel bathroom sink. Will this now be a big job for me to upgrade to a vessel sink, and can I ED DEL keep my present vanity in GRANDE place? - Shelly, Rhode Island Answer: The good news is you should be able to keep your present vanity base and lav sink plumbing in place. The bad news is you will most likely have to remove the entire vanity countertop along with your old sink. Once your contractor has the open vanity base, he or she can start the new vessel sink and countertop installation. Vessel sinks mount above the vanity top and usually require a smaller drain hole in place of a larger sink cut out. Finally, make sure you choose a deckmounted vessel sink faucet, not a wallmounted unit. With the taller vessel faucet installed on the countertop as well, you should be able to go with the flow to easily tap into the existing water lines below. When I was a student in the fourth grade, our teacher gave us an assignment investigating different types of poems. She gave us an assignment to write a haiku (a kind of short Japanese poem). I didn’t think that assignment from elementary school would bear much of a prediction. Here is the haiku I wrote: When I grow up I’ll be a lawyer or writer That’s what I’ll be Well, part of that was right. Like most persons with a knack for writing, I have an addiction to books. If you are a book lover like me, the question that comes to mind when organizing books is how to display them. Books are important as a source of knowledge, but to some, books are also cherished treasures, almost like friends, and decorating with them is a serious matter. The late short story writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges said, “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.” Most rooms with stacks and stacks of books are sanctuaries for book lovers. The quick-fire answer to storing books is a bookcase, of course. But what kind of bookcase? A built-in one made of painted or stained wood is pretty standard in homes with a designated library or office. A movable bookcase made of wood or metal is just another option and can be used in any room. Even a repurposed old china cabinet filled with your favorite tomes is a viable “library.” Not everyone has the benefit of an extra room for a library. However, books can be placed in almost any room. Other than a designated library or office, my favorite place for
a bookcase is a dining room. Besides creating an elegant background, a dining room table can double as a place to sit and read or do some research or homework. It is quite convenient to have books within reach. As such, everyone will use them. Books can go everywhere. Other locations that are suitable for storing books include entryways, hallways and even large powder rooms that can accommodate a bookcase or cupboard. Books can also be stored in a coffee table that has shelves. A stack of books that can also function as a side table. A table in an entry hall can be stacked with mountains of books for a casual chic look. A narrow shelf or shelves can be even placed on an ample stair landing for books so that you can grab one on your way to bed or out the door. Finally, another often-overlooked area for books is the bedroom. Again, Jorge Luis Borges also stated, “I cannot sleep unless I am surrounded by books.” The truth is that books lend a certain warmth to a room, and perhaps what Borges was referring to is the feeling of comfort provided by books. An idea to take away from this quote is to incorporate books into a room by using a bookcase as a headboard, making your books easy to reach while you’re in bed. Capodimonte teapot is stylish

uestion: I have enclosed a photo of a porcelain teapot that was given to me. It stands about 7 inches tall and is decorated with a classical scene of people in relief. There is a building and trees in the background. The spout appears to ANNE MCCOLLAM be a duck, and the lid is pink, topped with a yellow flower with a green leaf. It is in excellent condition. Marked on the bottom in gold is a five-point crown above the letter “N” and the words “Capodimonte — Italy.” Anything you can tell me about my teapot will be greatly appreciated. Answer: You have a Capodimonte-style porcelain teapot. The original mark of a crown over the letter “N” represents the city, Naples, Italy, and was first used in the late 1700s. It has been copied and used by a pleth-
ora of factories from the late 1800s to the present. Your Capodimonte-style teapot was made in the early 1900s and would probably be worth $125 to $225. Q: This mark is on a set of porcelain dishes that my husband and I inherited from his maternal great-grandmother. It is a service for 12 and includes all the serving pieces. Each dish is decorated with a band of petite pastel flowers, and the background is white. If our math is correct, the set was made around the turn of the last century. Should we insure the set or simply enjoy and pass it down through the generations? A: Johann Schmidt and Waldheim Greiner founded the Royal Bayreuth Factory in Tettau, Bavaria, in 1794. It is well known for its high-quality dinnerware as well as its figural “Devil and Cards” series, and its “Sunbon-
net Babies” and “Rose Tapestry” lines. The factory has survived ownerships, fires, wars and financial setbacks. Nevertheless, it continues to operate today. There’s no reason not to do both. ast week, we talked about the plant varieties that have won the 2019 Green Thumb Awards presented by the Direct Gardening Association (formerly called the Mail Order Gardening JEFF Association). RUGG This week we look at the tools and accessories category. The winning products are judged on their uniqueness; technological innovation; ability to solve a gardening problem or provide a gardening opportunity; and potential appeal to gardeners. Grow Light Garden is a modular system of high-intensity LED grow lights housed in bamboo frames. It features two modules (18 inches tall and 36 inches tall) that can be stacked or used separately to match the needs of the plants. The shorter is intended for seed starting and growing small plants, such as succulents or African violets. The larger accommodates taller houseplants as well as seedlings and transplants. Light up your life: Finding the perfect lamp is easy L ighting has such a large impact on a space, it might be surprising to find out it can easily be overlooked when designing a room. It has the ability to impact our mood, and of course, enhance the design of a room. From task lighting to creating general ambiance, lamps are inherently functional, but we’re here to say you don’t have to sacrifice form for function. KATIE I always strive to create LAUGHRIDGE layers of light within a room by using multiple light sources of varied types. I like to think about how the light will play in a room. The goal is a bright center, which is more typically achieved with overhead lighting, and pockets of light around the perimeter that highlight important elements. This is where lamps come into play. It’s clear from what we are seeing that designers are having a fun moment with creative lighting. Everyone has their own rules when it comes to choosing lighting for their spaces. For me, this is an area where I just like to have fun. I have picked up some tips and advice that hopefully can help you in choosing the perfect lamps for you. I like to think about the following prompts to get me started, because as we all know, rules (unlike lamps) are made to be broken. Incorporate color and personality. Lamps don’t have to be taken so seriously. Add whimsy to a space with an animal-shaped base perfect for a child’s room. Or, add a pop of an eye-catching hue to add some brightness to a darker tabletop. Feeling adventurous? Switch up your classic white shade for one in black or another exciting color to stand out. You might be surprised by how many compliments start coming your way. Add a new traditional touch and shop for double! Symmetrical lamps flanking a table are a key design element in new traditional design. Using statement lamps can double the interest and the impact. This tip can be applied to any room or design aesthetic. Symmetry never goes out of style. Let your lamp lead the design charge. Use your lamp to tie in your accent color, incorporate pattern and texture to a room, or show your wild side. I like to suggest you pick a lamp that really makes an impact and draws your eye. To borrow from Marie Kondo, choose a lamp that really sparks joy every time you turn it on. Treat your lamp as art and invest in it. I treat lamps as investment pieces. They are one of my favorite places to splurge in a room, because a good lamp truly makes

Some of my favorite lamps right now are lovely handpainted pieces from designer Dana Gibson. The way she incorporates wild pops of color to traditional shapes and forms is brilliant. Don’t be afraid to mix and match. Using lighting to create balance doesn’t mean you have to create uniformity. Mixing and matching different lamps throughout a room is what gives your room character and highlights your style. Make your own compost bin for recycling

ear James: I am not very handy with tools, but my daughter wants me to build a compost bin for our yard. I would like to build a simple one, but I want it to JAMES be effective. DULLEY What do you suggest? — Sandy F. Dear Sandy: Every year, schools are teaching children more and more about taking care of the environment and recycling for their future. Composting is actually not recycling, but rather reusing of organic materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. You may not realize it, but nearly 30 percent of the trash we dispose of is composed of organic materials such as lawn clippings and food waste. By composting these materials, our landfills will fill up slower, and we can reintroduce these organic materials into the soil. Composting is the most natural of processes. When you combine heat, moisture, natural microorganisms and organic waste, the waste slowly decomposes. The result is rich soil ideal for many uses around your landscaping and garden. The key to building an effective compost system is containing the wastes such that decomposition can take place. The actual amounts of moisture and heat are not critical. What is important is to have access to the compost and stir it so it decomposes more evenly. A wood pallet compost bin is the one of the simplest and least expensive designs to build. You can often find old pallets at home centers or manufacturing facilities. Sometimes, they will give them to you for free just to get rid of them. Set two pallets up on end to form two sides of a triangular compost bin. They
have many open gaps, which you can use to secure them together with wire. You can also drive in some nails or screws to make the bin even more secure. Attach a third pallet across the opening with wire on one edge and screws on the other edge to form the complete triangle. This will allow you to swing this one open like a door. Slide 1-by-4-inch lumber in the open slots in the pallets to form closed sides. You may cover the top with another pallet, but it really is not necessary. Most compost systems have three bins, and you move the contents of one bin to the next as the compost reaches different stages of decomposition. This allows you to have a starter bin for fresh waste and a final bin for usable compost soil. Another simple system is to use garbage cans with holes drilled in the sides and bottoms. A dozen 1/2-inch holes per can should be adequate. Galvanized metal
cans will work best. Periodically, simply lay each can on its side and roll it to mix the contents. If you have wire cutters and pliers, make four-sided wire mesh bins. You can find wire mesh at most home centers. Wear thick work gloves and cut four 3-by-2foot sections. Position your cuts so one side has the wire sticking out. Using the pliers, bend the wires around the edge of each adjacent section to create the bins. Once you have your three compost bins completed, start adding the organic waste materials. These may include grass, leaves, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, fruit and vegetable scraps, stale bread, apple cores, pet hair, fireplace ash and sawdust.
