Momma's Caramel Apple Dump Cake
Dump cake Ingredients:
One yellow cake mix
Two cans apple pie filling
One stick butter
Caramel ingredients:
One cup sugar
6 tbsp butter
1/2 cup room temperature heavy cream
Pinch of salt
Open the cans of apple pie filling (optional add all spice) and put in a 9x13x2 pan, open the cake mix and dump the dry mix over the apple filling, but butter into pads and place pads of butter over the top of dry mix and bake at 350 for 15 minutes or until the top is golden brown and crisp.
For the caramel topping: On medium heat and in a medium pot add one cup of sugar and stir until all the sugar crystals are melted (very important you stir the whole time because it will burn easily) once completely melted add 6 tbsp butter and stir until combined, then add 1/2 cup of heavy cream once combined pour into a glass bowl and add a pinch of salt
To serve: get a scoop of dump cake and top with caramel optional: a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream

GOOD EATS
Mel's Famous Brown Sugar Caramel Toffee Cake
1 1/2 cups unsalted butter (softened)
2 cups light brown sugard packed
1 cup granulated sugar
5 large eggs (room temperature)
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup whole milk (room temperature)
1-8 oz bag of Heath Toffee Bits
1 cup of pecans chopped
1 jar of caramel sauce
nonstick baking spray make sure you use baking spray and not cooking spray
Preheat over to 325 degrees and generously spray all surfaces of a 12 cup nonstick bundt pan with baking spray. Then, dust with flour and set aside
Beat the butter until creamy, then add both sugars, beating until fluffy (no less than 3 minutes). Add eggs one at a time, beating until just the yellow disappears after each egg.
In a medium bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to butter mixture in thirds, alternating with milk between each third. Beat until just combined Stir in pecans and toffee bits, then spoon batter into prepared pan.
Bake until a wooden pick comes out clean, approximately 75-90 minutes Do not overbake - will make dry and crumbly

High School Basketball in Jessamine County
Soon, the sounds of dribbling basketballs and the roar of the crowds will return to the gymnasiums at Jessamine County’s two high schools, East and West, as the 2022-23 basketball season gets underway. The goal of every high school hoop team is to make it to the state tournament at the end of the season. In the past one hundred three years, there have been eleven Jessamine County school basketball teams, five girls teams and six boys teams, that have competed in interscholastic competition in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, combining for five trips to the state tourney.
Nicholasville High School (Tarantulas)
History reveals to us that the first interscholastic basketball team in Jessamine County was the Nicholasville High School girls team which finished as the state tournament runner up in 1920. At that time, the post season state tournament was by invitation, and the girls tournament in 1920 was held at the YMCA in Paris on March 12th and 13th. Nicholasville beat Winchester 25 to 5 in the first round, then beat Lexington High (now named “Henry Clay”) by a score of 23 to 20 in three overtime periods, and then lost the championship game to Paris 32-10.
Likely, the extra three periods took its toll on the Nicholasville girls.
Nicholasville girls played twelve seasons altogether, before girls basketball was dropped as a sanctioned sport by the KHSAA after the 1932 season, and by the time it returned in 1974, Nicholasville had been consolidated with Wilmore to form Jessamine County High School. Nicholasville had a combined record of sixty-two wins and ninety-eight losses (38.7%).
The Nicholasville boys played thirty-eight seasons, but found post-season success difficult in a very tough district and region, often having to face the Lexington schools in both the district and region. Three of the four Nicholasville boys district runner up seasons, came during the 1943-1945 war years when the districts were split into two to reduce travel, and the only teams left in the resulting split district were Wilmore and Nicholasville. Nicholasville boys never won a district or region title and had a combined record of 270 wins and 586 losses (31.5%).

Wilmore High School (Bears)
Wilmore girls played only three seasons before the KHSAA stopped sanctioning girls basketball. They won twentyfour games and lost seventeen (58.5%), but never won a district or region title. They did win the 1930 B-Division district title in the era when the district, region, and state tournament were split into A and B divisions by enrollment. However, they lost the game for the overall district championship to Paris.
Wilmore boys won four district championships, including three during the two-team-district war years mentioned above, and were the runner up six times. Of their ten trips to the regional tournament, they were never able to win it. However, Wilmore had many good teams and posted a thirty-four year overall winning record of 441394 (52.8%).
Jessamine County (Colts)
Nicholasville and Wilmore were combined to form Jessamine County High School in the fall of 1958. There were only boys teams at that time, and the girls at Jessamine County would not get an opportunity to play competitively until 1974.
After consolidation, it took the Jessamine County boys six seasons to advance to the region, being the district runner up in 1964. They finally won the district in 1965, and would match that feat ten more times with the last one coming in 1990. That year, they also won the 11th Region Tournament, shocking region favorite Henry Clay in the semifinals on a late basket, and then beating Lexington Catholic convincingly in the championship. At the state tournament, the Colts beat Paducah Tilghman in the opening game, then lost to Covington Holmes in the quarterfinals. It would prove to be Jessamine County High School’s lone trip to the Sweet Sixteen. The boys had a thirtynine year combined record of 513-506 (50.3%).
Jessamine County girls basketball began in 1974-75, and won four district championships. They never won a region title or played in the state tournament. Over their twenty-three seasons, the girls were 196-321 (37.9%).
Rosenwald-Dunbar (Titans)
The Titans boys team started in 1945-46 and played eighteen seasons until being integrated with Jessamine County high school for the 1963-64 school year.
Until the 1957-58 season, the Titans played in the Kentucky High School Athletic League (KHSAL), which was a league for segregated African-American schools similar to the KHSAA for white schools. Beginning in 1958, Rosenwald-Dunbar was a member of the KHSAA and participated in the same district and region as Jessamine County High.
The best season for the Titans was in 1956-57, when they won the Bluegrass Conference and advanced to the KHSAL state tournament at Kentucky State University in Frankfort. They suffered a first round loss but completed a very successful season.
East Jessamine (Jaguars) and West Jessamine (Colts)
Jessamine County High School was split in 1997 to create East Jessamine and West Jessamine. East became the Jaguars while West retained the Colts nickname. The schools’ timelines run a parallel course over the past twenty-five seasons, playing the first eight seasons in the 42nd District of the 11th Region with three other Lexington schools, then moving to the 46th District in the 12th Region with the Mercer County schools.
JESSAMINE COUNTY LIVING | 5
The 12th Region has been good for Jessamine County teams. West Jessamine boys have won eleven district titles and three region championships. In its twenty-five year history, West Jessamine boys have only failed to qualify for the Region four times. They played in two state tournaments at Rupp Arena in 2009 and 2010, advancing to the final four in 2009. They won the 12th Region in 2020, but Covid19 wiped out the boys tournament and none of the games were played. It would have been the third trip for West Jessamine. The Colts have won 60% of their 750 games played over the past twentyfive years (450 wins versus 300 losses). The West Jessamine girls have never won a district or region title and have a combined winning record of 202-458 (30.6%).
East Jessamine girls have won one district championship and been runner up eight times.
Both East and West girls teams have had the misfortune of being paired in the same district and region as Mercer County, which has won sixteen of the seventeen 46th District titles since the current alignment.
East Jessamine girls have a combined record of 261-394 (39.8%) over their twenty-five years. East Jessamine boys have won two district titles and has been runner up nine times. They have never won the region in eleven trips. The Jaguars have a winning record over their twenty-five season, winning 53% of their games (386 wins and 342 losses).
SUMMARY: Now three seasons into the second century of high school basketball in Jessamine County, the county has two schools with great boys and girls programs, offering high-level of competition for the studentathletes of the county. While the game has changed considerably since Nicholasville girls were the state runner up in 1920 (like no longer having a jump ball after every made basket), the wholesome physical attributes of sports, the lifelong discipline and memories, and the school and community pride it creates, has not changed.

Gratitude: Why I’m Thankful
Take time to be grateful for all you have. Sure, you could have more, but you could also have less.
Letter From Judge West
With school back in session, the days growing shorter, and the weather getting cooler, residents may be looking for entertaining ways to hang out as a family or spend time with friends. Jessamine County has many events held in autumn that has fun for all ages. Enjoy live music at the Jessamine County Fairgrounds for Barks & Bluegrass, an event on September 10th that supports the County Animal Shelter. In September, More Tales Storytelling Festival, held the 16th to 17th in Wilmore, and the Antique Tractor Show, held the 16th to 18th at the Fairgrounds, are back in Jessamine County this year. On October 1st in Wilmore, the Craft Show will be open for all to visit, and another popular event is the Jessamine County Fall Festival, which will be October 14th and 15th in Downtown Nicholasville Visit the county website at www JessamineCo com for information about events So as the leaves change color, and the Bluegrass is painted in warm color, I hope all residents and visitors can find joy and memorable moments throughout Jessamine County.
Although it looks and feels more like early summer as I write this, we all know that fall is quickly approaching! Some not-so-subtle hints such as school buses rolling throughout the county, campus activity at the University and Seminary, and summer closeout sells on East Main Street are just a few signs And another indicator is the buzz popping up about the 5th Wilmore “More Tales” Storytelling Festival, September 14-17. You won’t want to miss this great family friendly and free event, thanks to some marvelous donors. And while you are marking your calendar, block off the first Saturday in October for the 24th annual Wilmore Fall Arts & Crafts Festival! Some of the best craftsmen and artisans in the region will be set up on East Main Street, along with food trucks, children’s activities, live music, and of course our many shops will be open as well. Come visit us soon!

Holly Lewis: Rev’d Up For Nicholasville
If you ’ ve had the good fortune of meeting Holly Lewis, you know how much she cares about our community and the businesses here She has a real passion for business growth, and that’s why she’s been so successful with Rev Local, a national, Google Premier Partner digital agency that currently has a presence in over 50 markets across the country. She helps small businesses under their digital footprint and how they are showing up online, so that they can grow From working in the same community with her, it’s easy to see that she wants us all to win, and for that reason, I consider her a real gem and team player here in Jessamine County.
Holly started working with business owners in print in 1993 Then in 1998, when the online space was still new, Holly started helping small businesses show up and be chosen online She started building Seach Engine Optimized websites in 2002 Since then, all roads have led her to helping small businesses in today’s landscape online With buzz words like Search Engine Optimization, Review Marketing, AdWords, Social Media, Retargeting, and more, it’s easy for small business owners to throw in the towel early, because it can all be pretty confusing That’s where Holly comes in She understands these terms, and can help them make the best decision for their local business What makes Holly Lewis the happiest is so clear when yo talk to her her family She literally beams with pride when she tells you all about her kids and husband. It’s really awesome to see someone strike a balance with home and career and it goes to show how much love she really puts into everything she cares about If you or someone you know could use Holly’s services, you can reach her directly at hlewis@revlocal.com or 859-608-0810.

200 Back-to-School Backpacks Provided by 5 Local State Farm Agents
While it's sometimes easy to take for granted the convenience something as simple as a backpack provides, it's certainly not lost on those students who don't have one to carry their school supplies and heavy books Local Jessamine County State Farm Insurance agents Randall Chewning, Michael Cayse, Steve Page, Jennifer Hawkins and Richard Woolums want to ensure that JCS students are prepared with backpacks when they return to school this Fall Last year, these agents pooled together their resources and rallied a total of 100 backpacks for our resource centers at Jessamine County Schools. The backpacks were so needed,
they quickly discovered 100 wasn't going to be enough moving forward. That's why this year, our local State Farm agents provided double the amount of backpacks from the first year, making the total 200 for our students in need
State Farm Agent Randall Chewning weighed in on the presentation of the backpacks to the family resource center "We are trying to kick off Cram the Cruiser It's a series of events that come together But ultimately, we hope the students here in Jessamine County win. It's just something we decided to do collectively, as a group of agents "
According to State Farm agent Michael Cayse, the need may not always be apparent, but it's when students are focused on the heavy books and social implications instead of learning that we really notice how important backpacks really are to students. Nicholasville Police Officer Adam Teater agreed, saying that every experience is big to these students, " so being able to walk in and be prepared helps so much "
That's why Cram the Cruiser is so special to NPD. They see a need for supplies for all ages and all schools in Jessamine County. Each year, the community bands together to " cram the cruiser" with school supplies for JCS that students can use all year long, officer Jermaine Jackson said Officer Sam Wade agreed, saying that supplies have to be prepared before real learning can take place.
The first day of school, nerves are up, and to go into school with no or limited supplies puts you at a deficit.
- Adam Teater, NPD
On behalf of Jessamine County Living Magazine, we want to thank our State Farm agents for the generous donations of the 200 backpacks to our school resource centers. Also, we want to thank the Nicholasville Police Department for organizing Cram the Cruiser again this year Thank you to our neighbors who donated to our schools and students This year, our students are better equipped to learn because of your generosity and compassion

Budgeting for Holidays!
With fall in the air, we know that Christmas is right around the corner And no matter how you celebrate, the holidays can quickly become a season of over-spending. So with several months to go, it's the perfect time to consider how to keep December from becoming the month of debt.
Go in with a plan Begin with a list of expenses and start brainstorming all the ways you've spent "surprise" money in the past. Of course we think about gifts for family and friends, but how many $20 "white elephant" gifts have you needed to come up with last minute? With holiday parties, it's important to also plan for an excess in grocery shopping costs as well
2. Decide on a budget. Yes, that's right…even the season of joy must have a boundary! Protect yourself from accumulating a ton of debt by setting a limit on what you intend to spend through the upcoming months Assign a dollar amount to each category and stick to it.
3. Start saving now. Once you have a number in mind, divide out how much you can afford to save each paycheck and place it in an account where you won't be tempted to dip in too early.
4 Get creative By beginning to plan before December 1st, you allow yourself the space to think of unique, DIY, or even experience-based gifts. Waiting until the last minute creates pressure that causes us to be quick to pull the trigger on money we may not have otherwise spent
5. Track your expenses. This part is so important when creating a budget in the future. Knowing exactly how much you spent and where will give you better expectations next time. For those of us with large families, propose that everyone draws a name for another family member Involve the kids by taking them shopping for their selected person - what a better way to teach the joy of picking out a special gift! You may also want to consider a cash-only spending plan. Credit cards almost always have doubledigit interest rates, and a $1,000 charge to a credit card for holiday gifts paid back at the minimum payment could end up costing you $1,800 or more. Creating a plan for the holidays is a great way to ensure you will enter the new year exactly where you'd like to be financially.
