We Have It All

- Restaurants, Shopping, Arts and Entertainment

Diversity has defined this Midwestern city since day one, and the wide range of religious institutions offer a spiritual setting for all needs and beliefs. Hungry? Come and get it in the Peoria area! From the unique flavors of local ethnic and traditional offerings to the best of the national chains, Peoria’s restaurants satisfy the most discerning appetites, no matter your budget. Locations are as varied as the offerings, from restaurants overlooking the Illinois River to popular neighborhood diners, all overflowing with the tastes of Peoria and the world. We guarantee you’ll have no excuse to be bored in the heart of Illinois! Entertainment is our specialty, whether homespun or straight from the world’s finest forums. The fine arts thrive in Central Illinois and have put Peoria on the map with some of the finest talents in the world performing on our stages. You’ll find something that appeals to everyone, from the refrains of the more than century old Peoria Symphony Orchestra, known throughout the world, to lively contemporary acts that rock downtown venues. Or expose yourself to rich cultural delights such as Opera Illinois and the Peoria Civic Chorale as they take the stage at the Peoria Civic Center Theater. Peoria is home to Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences, the only one of its kind between Chicago and St. Louis. From exhibits such as Rodin and King Tut to upcoming blockbusters such as the exquisite glasswork of artist Dale Chihuly, Lakeview reaches into every corner of central Illinois with offerings for all ages. Several entities, including Lakeview Museum and the Peoria Historical Society, are working on creating a state-of-the-art museum along the riverfront downtown as an attraction for all ages. Speaking of unique, the Shoppes at Grand Prairie is home to the new Peoria Holocaust Memorial, an outdoor display with 11 million buttons and educational materials to honor and teach about the 11 million victims of the Holocaust. Also check out live theater on several stages including Corn Stock Theatre in the comfortable setting of Laura Bradley Park. Don’t miss out what’s new at the Peoria Art Guild and its annual fall Fine Arts Fair along the riverfront. Liven up your life with the Miller Midwest Jazz Heritage Festival or the Budweiser Illinois Blues Festival, performances at the CEFCU Center Stage at The Landing, or a concert in the park with the Peoria Municipal Band. Arts Partners , an umbrella agency, helps promote the countless corners of arts in the community and how they enhance this region’s cultural and financial development, pumping millions of dollars into the local economy while creating a better and more enriching environment for resident and visitor alike. Keep eyes and ears open for the renovation of the Peoria Zoo, tripling the size of the facility with the development of an African savannah and interactive animal exhibits. Walk through the nationally recognized George L. Luthy Botanical Garden or peek at the fields of yesteryear at Wildlife Prairie Park. Let the kids explore Caterpillar Inc.’s tractor-tough playground at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie. – Courtesy of The Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce

A Secret and a Promise in Every Bite! The best tamale you’ll ever eat, is made with a secret and a promise. The promise was made by Willie Smith, many years ago in Central Mississippi. One of 11 children, living on a farm, he promised his parents that he would be a success in life for the benefit of his family. The secret came from his friend, Aaron Scott in Benoit, Mississippi who made the now-famous, tasty tamales and sold them from a St. cart. Years later, after Willie had moved to Peoria, he returned to Mississippi for the sole purpose of acquiring the secret tamale recipe from Aaron. With a promissory handshake, Aaron gave Willie the recipe for success. With help from his wife, Juanita and daughters Tanika and Nicole, Willie Smith has been able to keep his promise made long ago to his parents. His tamales have captivated an army of fans who have also discovered Willie’s delicious grilled rib eye and pork chop sandwiches, and slabs of barbeque ribs. Willie is grateful for his loyal customers and thankful for his many blessings and those who helped him along the way. The secret that makes Willie’s tamales so good? Still a secret, known only to Willie Smith. But the gazillion tamales sold are testament to the power of the promise. Join the crowds at Willie’s. Your stomach will smile! Bring your appetite to all three WILLIE’S locations: downtown Peoria St. cart, route 29 and 17 in Sparland, or on Farmington Road in Peoria.

Let’s Play

We’ve set the standard for excellence in facilities with the state-of-the-art O’Brien Field, home to the Chicago Cubs minor league, the Peoria Chiefs. O’Brien Field has all the bells and whistles as proved to the more than quarter-million fans who came through its turnstiles in the first season after its opening on May 24, 2002, to cheer the 2002 Midwest League champion Chiefs. Home plate and beyond also served as a perfect setting for hometown concerts and a stirring 9-11 tribute in its debut year. Just down the road stands the impressive Peoria Civic Center complete with an arena that seats more than 12,000 to cheer the Peoria Pirates indoor football and Peoria Rivermen hockey professional teams, both of which give new meaning to the term rough and ready.

Sports

The Peoria Park District, multiple winner of national honors for excellence, serves as steward of more than 9,000 acres of open space, including more than 60 parks of all sizes, several public golf courses for every talent and pace, two fun-filled aquatic parks, the multi-purpose Owens Center, the majestic wooded hills and spacious soccer fields of Detweiller Park. Want to get fit? The RiverPlex Recreation and Wellness Center, operated by the Peoria Park District and OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, has an abundance of fitness opportunities. Add to that Landmark Racquet and Health Club, the Clubs at River City, and a unique aquatic program at the YWCA of Peoria at Lakeview Park, and the list of healthy options goes on and on. Or just let loose at Splashdown Family Waterpark in East Peoria. – Courtesy of Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce

With the incredible rise in popularity of ball golf, it’s no surprise that disc golf is also enjoying a similar -- if proportional -- rise in popularity. Disc golf offers many of the same pleasures: fresh air in a beautiful landscape, the camaraderie of friends, and the challenge and excitement of combining personal skill and speed to project an object toward a target. And perhaps best of all, disc golf is inexpensive. The only equipment you need is a flying disc, and most disc golf courses are located in municipal parks, which admit players for free or charge a minimal fee for daily or yearly access. Don’t expect to see many freestyle discs out on the course. These discs, commonly seen at the beach, will prove to be bulky and lack the distance you’ll want for driving. On the other hand, the sharper edges of a golf disc can be very painful if used for a game of catch! The game draws an easy-going crowd of 500,000 regular players who welcome and encourage new players. Traditionally dominated by 18 to 54-year-old males, the field of disc golf players has expanded greatly in recent years to include many women and families. Kids love it, it’s a cheap date and a great excuse to get a little outdoor exercise. Bottom line: disc golf can be big fun for everyone regardless of age, gender or economic status. 24

We Got What Looks Good On U!

Weddings Peoria is quite the melting pot, full of different cultures and traditions. Some wedding traditions may even look strange to those who are not familiar with them. Removing the bride’s garter, for example, is considered vulgar by more than just a few cultures, and even throwing the bouquet is considered an oddity. To many cultures, driving a vehicle with loud and noisy cans dragging behind it is considered rude. Many couples though, import traditions from other cultures into their wedding. There are quite a few traditions that were started in Africa and now are used around the world. For example, the giving of a dowry is a common tradition derived from Africa. Also, a white dress has not always been the color of choice for brides to be. In Europe and Africa women used to have dresses made by several women of the community, often appearing bright and having several colors. Honeymoons are also very different all around the world. In some cultures the honeymoon isn’t considered over, nor is the wedding even declared official until the first child is born. In tribal cultures, an elderly woman would coach the bride on how to perform on her wedding day No matter what your culture or tradition is, you are sure to find everything you need to make your wedding perfect in Peoria. A wide variety of churches, salons, florists and photographers make Peoria a great location for your summer wedding.
