Tu B’Shvat: Also called the New Year for trees, on this arbor day, it is customary to eat fruit from trees that grow in Israel, plant trees or provide money for the planting of trees in Israel. Purim: The holiday of Purim involves a plot by the wicked Haman against the Jews and his eventual defeat and demise through the efforts of Mordechai and Queen Esther. Passover/Pesach: Passover recalls the deliverance of Jews from Egyptian slavery. Jews around the world celebrate their freedom at the Seder table as the story of the exodus from Egypt is told. Yom Hashoah: Holocaust Memorial Day. A day to remember the victims of the Holocaust. Yom Hazikaron: The day on which Israel honors its war veterans. It is intended to remind people of the price paid for independence, existence of the state and of what was achieved with the soldiers’ sacrifice. Yom Ha’Atzamaut: Israeli Independence Day celebrates the founding of the State of Israel. Shavuot: Shavuot means “weeks” signifying seven weeks after Passover. It celebrates the moment when Moses received the Torah and the 10 Commandments on Mount Sinai.

teens TidewaterJewish Teens The Teen Department promotes a community where teens forge social and Jewish connections. Multiple programs designed to create opportunities for social action, creative arts, socialization and athletics give teens a place to find their strength and form positive relationships. One goal of the department is to serve as a link to existing organizations, including BBYO, USY, NFTY, different schools and communities. Come connect with your Jewish teen community. If you have any questions, comments, or creative ideas, please contact Shikma Gurvitz at 321-2329 or sgurvitz@simonfamilyj.org.

Panim For Jewish 11-12th graders One Sunday each month, through April 2011, 3pm Panim is an exciting, year-long leadership and Jewish Civics initiative designed to create a service-learning experience for Jewish teens in the 11th and 12th grades. Based on the idea of Tikkun Olam, Panim empowers Jewish youth to fully understand their role in repairing the world. This program is a “call to action,” examining Jewish values and current social and civic issues throughout the world. Sessions are derived from pop culture, current events and Torah text. The highlight of Panim is the four-day seminar in Washington, D.C. where teens meet with other Panim students from across the country and take part in advocacy, community service, lobbying and programs with distinct professionals of the Jewish community. Back at the JCC, Panim students will use knowledge gathered from the course and seminar to create a high-impact community service project highlighting an issue of importance, both to Jews and the greater community. Past community service projects included DarFest which provided assistance to Darfur refugees, Great American Awareness Sale that focused on energy conservation and going green, and Strike Out Hunger, a Tides game, in which all proceeds went to assist ForKids, Jewish Family Services, and the Foodbank, and Bouncing Back: 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament for Haiti Relief. Free, except for Washington D.C. conference Contact Shikma Gurvitz at 321-2329 or sgurvitz@simonfamilyj.org.

BBYO Jewish 9-12th graders Sundays, 1-3pm The B’nai B’rith Youth Organization (BBYO) is the largest Jewish teen organization in Tidewater. Teens meet weekly at the JCC to work on BBYO programs. Activities involve community service, socials, athletics, social action and Judaic. BBYO also has several conventions each year as well as summer leadership programs and trips to Israel. Being a part of this organization not only allows your teen to be with other Jewish teens, but guides your teen into leadership positions for the future. BBYO is open to all Jewish 9-12 graders. For more information, and for annual membership rates for BBYO, please contact Ellie Bernstein, City Director at 321-2324 or Beems@cox.net.

CLUB JASY - MIDDLE SCHOOL Jewish 6–8th graders Middle Schoolers will join other Jewish teens to make a difference in the world while having a great time. Teens will help plan exciting, fun activities that will touch the lives of others while impacting their own lives Jewishly. They will experience programming at the Simon Family JCC designed exclusively for and by them, such as social and recreational activities, Judaic and Israeli awareness and community service. • • • • •
