Bon Appetite, for now anyways If you’ve ever enjoyed a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate cake after an equally amazing dinner you know the last thing you want to be put into is a bikini. Food is meant to be publicly indulged and privately a strict diet regime will pay for your sins. How can I be encouraged to enjoy that cake and afterwards expected to remain in good figure? This project explored what gender expectations exist for young women’s eating habits and if there could be a healthy relationship between food and a healthy body image. The end goal was to be able to eat comfortably again. To look at my plate with self control, knowledge, and pleasure.


I’m expected to eat more than most women. I think it’s bullshit. With a full mouth Actually, the majority of the people enjoy talking about food. Their favourite flavours, restaurants, and of course desserts to try. However when you ask about eating and what’s inside most people aren’t as chatty. A strange blurred line between indulging and eating what’s good for you.

I conducted a survey to find shared views surrounding food and eating expectations because it helped guide me to a more relevant solution. If there’s one thing I learned from being a designer is to understand your direct audience so you can create something relevant, useful, and easy to use.

Those surveyed considered themselves not healthy eaters but were unsure what nutrients were needed . Time was a large reason why most grabbed takeout but only felt guilty after overeating or when it was junk food.

German designer Dieter Rams’ Principles 2 and 4 of what makes good design.


Personas A persona is a fictional character created in a user based design approach. It is meant to outline an intended user’s purpose, goals, and limitations for a product. By being specific about the characters needs it allows the design to be applied to a more realistic situation. It helps remind the designer that they are assisting not just an audience, but for a group of individual users much like themselves.


Becky Becky is a freshman at Toronto University. She lives in a student house with four other girls. Unlike her house mates, it is her first time living away from home. Taking her undergraduate in Health Sciences, Becky feels overwhelmed with balancing school, work, and social life. She doesn’t like having to buy her meals at school and her busy days make it hard to eat healthy. After her morning coffee, she grabs the cafeteria’s chicken pasta with her side as fruit cup or Caesar salad. Her dinners are mostly a can of vegetables with mashed potatoes or microwaved rice container. Occasionally her house mates make a “family” meal with healthier options and a few desserts. After her waitress shifts three times a week, Becky rewards herself waith the poutine or strawberry cheesecake. She perceives herself to be somewhat healthy and is upset about her slight weight gain since high school.

Yana got her first job as an accounting intern in New York city. Every weekday morning she commutes in from Brooklyn. On the train to work, she’s on her Kobo reading up on the newest restaurants all around the world. Her interest in food comes from her many family vacations around Europe and Asia. She gets a weekly craving for sushi and tends to get takeout too often. Every Saturday morning, Yana and her three friends walk around the local park and talk about their foodie finds. Among her friends Yana eats the healthiest since she considers herself an aficionado on flavourful salads and red wine. Her cravings include cheese and some kind of fish and chips. She doesn’t feel guilty after dinner outings but wishes she could cook with as much flavour as she’s read about.

Relevance The technological medium was based on what would best serve the users needs. For young women to relearn positive eating habits and perspectives, a portable device was best suited option. Too often eating healthy appears as a laboursome chore that ruins all enjoyment of food.
