you?

Dear Sir/Madame, I’m Simone Fracasso, an Italian student attending the Aalborg University where I am doing a Master’s Programme in Urban Design. For my next semester, starting in September, I want to do an internship abroad. I’m writing this letter to express my strong motivation for a position as an intern in your studio. I always wanted to have an experience abroad, which is also the reason why I moved from Italy to study in Denmark. Here I got the possibility to increase my knowledge of other cultures, but in particular knowledge concerning my field. I chose the Aalborg University for this phase in my education because I found it very interesting to work with the Problem and Project Based Learning Model used here, where team work is the essential component of a project’s design.

Date: 01-04-2014 life. I’ve worked with this especially during courses such as Constructing and Designing Performative Urban Environments (see the portfolio for more information), where I had the possibility to explore this field. Furthermore I’ve always been interested in Graphic Design, especially the role it has in Urban Planning as an important tool of communication among designers and citizens. Looking at the projects and principles of your studio I immediately sensed a coincidence of interests, I really think it’s the place where I can deal with these issues in depth and at the same time I can be a useful resource for you with my graphic approach. In the portfolio you will find more information about some of the projects I've worked on these years. If you’d like to meet me in person and go over the tasks I’ll be happy to accommodate your schedule. Please give me a time and date that works for you. I would really appreciate being considered for this position.

One of my great interests is the relationship between people and public spaces. I believe that in a design process it’s important to take into consideration how people actually use public spaces. Throughout my studies I found it interesting working with the atmosphere of places, especially their sensorial aspects, Thank you in advance for your time. and with a design approach aimed at creating an iden- Best Regards. tity and a sense of a community. I believe the idea of using short-term actions in public spaces as catalysts for long-term processes that become part of the daily Simone Fracasso

THE VISION

Re-energize the area through an extension of the city that captures the pulse, scale and energy of Copenhagen, while rethinking the management of storm water on a local scale that will enhance the quality of neighborhoods. Re-Use the Power station as a social and cultural catalyst for the Southern Harbor by implementing a variety of programs and uses.

The PowerPlant 1 This area works like a social and cultural catalyst, attracting a diversity of users by creating a large palette of activities and programs. In that sense, the spatial qualities, open spaces, creative uses, materials and diversities were the main points in reactivating the Power Plant area.

The Wild Island 2 Situated along the east harbour line and in connection to the office/commercial area, is more than just a land with recreational use. It has an educational purpose as well and it’s directly connected to the hydrological system. The canal along the island is meant to clean all the water collected from the streets on the site. The people can observe the cleaning process of the water, consisting in 3 steps and taking place in three basins.

The family block 3

This block is a community itself. It has several backyards, but it appears as a whole due to the “blue water connection between them. The environment created is a safe one with the help of very intimate backyards, that also encourage a playful atmosphere. Even though the block has a large scale, the human scale is kept by addind small housing inside the backyards. Even though the block seems introvert, it stills invite people in, and the connecting structure is a beautiful contrast to the sea.

c

implementing hydrology A system of ponds was created, destined for recreational use, where the rainwater will be used in various activities and in creating diverse atmospheres (sprinklers, small bath areas for kids, hot baths, water gardens). The ponds are linked to each other in order to support heavy rainstorm, thus resulting in an organic shape that will break down the rigidity of the buildings. In dry season, the ponds will gain another use, as they are designed in this way: stairs, spaces for skaters, small “theatre areas”. NO RAIN

To break hierarchical borders and make people more open towards each other, creating conditions of temporary free relationships. Having non-permanent programmes, activities and installations based on the production of same feelings and sensorial experiences will be a way of putting social distinctions to sleep for a while. The programmes will take place in the area only through the participants and it is something which cannot be observed from the outside, it’s something one has to experience and live within.

Department of Architecture and Media Technology Østergåde 6, 9000 Aalborg Denmark

To whom it may concern, I was the co-ordinator for Simone’s 1stsemester in the Master’s Programme in Urban Desing at the Department of Architecture and Design, Aalborg University and the supervisor for his semester project. Simone was accepted into the Master’s Programme in Architecture and Design on the basis of his bachelor in Architectural Science at the RomaTre University in Rome. The 1st semester of the Master in Urban Design is described by the theme Transformation, and the semester project developed a large post-industrial site in Copenhagen, Denmark both as a programmed special entirety and an experiential and detailed encounter. This challenge was met by Simone in the project developed for the site not only in the understanding of the large scale as a spatial planning exercise utilizing an overview, but also as in the understanding of the smaller scale of human existence within the large scale. In this Simone worked with the creation of sensory atmospheres, citizen involvement and the programming spaces to allow for social sustainability through the inclusion of subcultures, communities and local realities. In order to manifest this kind of project solution, Simone has engaged in in-depth analytical work with the site, creative and innovative concept development, as well as work with both physical and digital models to spatially and materially develop design solutions.

Date: 10-02-2014 Aalborg University employs a “Project Based Learning” method that among other things is manifested in the students working in groups. The groups are made up of a combination of Danish and Internaltional exchange students and the language for the master is English. Althought able to work indipendently in all phases of the design process, Simone contributes both hard work and a positive spirit to the group. Simone is a serious student of Architecture and Design and he employs experimental tools to find realistic solutions. In addition to this, Simone ensures that the comunication of ideas and proposals is graphically clear and compelling. I give Simone my best recommendation. His open-mindedness and dedication combined with an insatiable curiousity for new cultures and learning experiences, makes Simone a percfect candidate to work abroad, and his good nature and winning personality make him an asset to any team. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Best Regards.
