We are currently celebrating 50 years as one of Australia’s (and now the world’s) leading furniture designers and manufacturers. Chesterfield

The Chesterfield style of sofa is undoubtedly one of the most popular and elegant sofa designs the world over. Dating back to the 18th century; its true origins have been a constant source of debate since its inception. There are several theories regarding its history, and the origins of the name. The most prevalent of these however, is that the Chesterfield was named after English diplomat Phillip Stanhope (1694-1773), who was the Fourth Earl of Chesterfield. A popular theory is that Stanhope ordered a custom piece of furniture to be made for him which was elegant but comfortable. His requirements led to the production of a sofa which was generously buttoned, with quilted leather and featured arms and back of equal height. Another belief is that the name is derived from the English town of �� Derbyshire, and others conceive that the word was merely used to describe an English style of sofa called the “Davenport”, which is said to have arms and back of equal or similar proportions. Wherever the name truly came from, it was widely used in the 20th century in America, Canada and Great Britain as a generic term to describe a couch or sofa of any form. Nowadays, it is commonly accepted that the term chesterfield is used to describe a couch that has distinctive deep buttoned upholstery and arms that are of the same height as the back.

It’s what’s inside that counts.... Whilst the Chesterfield sofa has remained a desirable type of furniture for more than 200 years, its price often made it out of reach of most people.

Leather may be seen as the standard covering for the Chesterfield, however in the Victorian era the Chesterfield sofa became very popular in fabric as leather was not always the most affordable option. Because of this, it was the first sofa to be completely covered in a wide variety of both fabrics and upholstery leather. Metal coiled springs were first introduced to the Chesterfield’s construction in the 1830s. Comfort still remained important, so the springs were padded with horsehair and topped with wadding.

Today, the chesterfield has undergone a vast transformation. The latest technological advances have enabled manufacturers to create chesterfields that are both beautiful, and comfortable. John Moran, the founder and creative genius behind the brand, pioneered many innovations both within the company and industry. He never wavered from his philosophy of high quality, comfortable furniture at an affordable price.

Today, hundreds of thousands of Australians live with a Moran. In fact, Moran has produced over one million pieces of furniture to date. Moran has a rich 50 year history as the leader in the design and

manufacturing of Furniture. From its humble beginnings, John Moran’s vision has developed into a truly international business with factories in Australia and overseas continuing to make some of the very best furniture in the world.

Marketing and Advertising was a major part of the Moran business. Moran was on the inside cover of Home Beautiful every month, Moran furniture was a continual prize on Sale of the Century and well known Charities.

John Moran completed his furniture apprenticeship and started Moran Furniture over 50 years ago in his mother’s garage. He soon outgrew the garage and rented a factory at 18 Weir St, Tooronga.

In 2002, Moran Furniture embarked on a joint venture partnership and furniture was manufactured out of a company owned state of the art facility in Shanghai.

Moran Commercial Division came into being around 1979. This division worked with high profile Celebrities, Architects and Building Developers, providing them not only with furniture but full fit out packages. eg Hospitality, Resorts, Board Rooms, Bond’s yacht, Ron Walkers Plane, Apartments in Queensland, Hayman Island and Crown Casino Melbourne, to name just a few.

Even in the beginning John’s approach to business was innovative for the times. He would go into the retail outlets and talk to the sales staff about the benefits his products offered consumers. Unfortunately 2003 saw the sad passing of Mr John Moran; but his passion and commitment to the business he built still continues to this day.

A short period afterwards Moran exported furniture to New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Hong Kong markets which was very successful. This was unusual for an Australian furniture manufacturer but it was the reputation and iconic status that established the market.

Today, Moran Furniture has a team of dedicated staff who are expertly trained in their fields, some of whom have been with the company for over twenty years. Their passion and commitment continues John’s vision and keeps it going from strength to strength.

John Moran travelled extensively around the world looking at trends, fashion, fabrics and furniture. He with other Moran employees attended all the fabric shows overseas and he had an excellent working relationship with the Mills. He was often showing fabrics and designs in Australia that were just being launched overseas. Moran added beautiful detail to their furniture with piping, arm caps, matched patterns, exclusive fabrics from Overseas Mills, and specialty European Leathers. The furniture was comfortable and well made with a 10 year structural warranty which other manufacturers did not have. Other furniture manufacturers were of course trying to catch up but John was always that step ahead with the 5 points of difference including spring cell seat cushions, body correct seating, and Signature collection.

50 years ago the Michigan sofa was a huge success. Today Moran continues that success with design and function providing the perfect marriage. No doubt the Moran name will still be heard throughout Australia and the world for the next 50 years and beyond.

Moran welcomed customers to the Showroom and John was often stopping in to chat with them. John was a very hands on person and knew all the employees by name and would address them as such. He was respected by his employees but also demanded a high standard of work ethic and care. John promoted Moran within all stores and at all the seasonal launches. He had passion for his furniture and passed this passion on to all.

For over fifty years, the Moran name has been synonymous with luxurious, elegant and time honoured furniture. Just the mere mention of Moran Furniture conjures up images of the finest quality sofas. Moran Furniture has recently made the move to a new premises in Springvale with a dedicated showroom hosted by one of our resident interior design guru’s, Wendy Wood.

What was your inspiration to get into the furniture industry?

I have always had a love of interiors, space and design. It’s from this passion that I developed an interest in the furniture industry. I really enjoy working with Designers and Architects, and I get a great sense of satisfaction from seeing a project through from inception to completion. Working in the furniture industry is great way to express my creative side.

What qualifications do you have?

I studied at RMIT university and have gained a professional qualification in Interior Design.

What furniture or interior design trends are hot right now?

Florals are huge right now and can be seen on everything from fashion to home wares to furniture. Plum, violet and red tones are all the rage. Fabrics in check and geometric prints are popular, as are Kelim fabrics (Kelim are ethnic/Moroccan inspired prints). While leather has always been a popular covering for sofas, the whole aged/distressed leather look is really taking over. People don’t always want their leather to look perfect anymore. These leathers have a depth and earthiness to them that complement Kelim fabrics, so beautifully. I suggest using this type of “in season” trends to liven up your current décor.

If you could own one piece of Moran furniture, what would it be?

Oh gosh… well currently I must have at least fifteen or so pieces of Moran furniture in my home. I’ve accumulated a lot of fantastic models in my time with the company; but if there’s one piece that I’d absolutely love to add to my collection it would have to be the Knowle. The Knowle is such a classically beautiful piece and the fact that it converts to a day bed…well it would just be heaven.

Wow, fifteen pieces! Now that’s impressive. Tell me a little bit more about that.

Well, I have everything from dining chairs to traditional sofas, modulars, bed settees and even accent chairs. They’re all timeless pieces and some of them I’ve owned for over twenty years. I’ve had a few of them re-upholstered over the years through Moran’s commercial division. It’s really a fantastic way to update your look without spending a fortune. Whenever I moved house, my lifestyle changed or I felt my décor was looking a little tired; I just had the pieces re-covered to freshen them up.

What’s the most common interior design mistake that people make?

I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is to overfill a room. When you only have a small space to work with, you are actually better off to have a few key large pieces rather than lots of smaller ones. When you put too many small pieces in a room it makes the space look cluttered and dysfunctional.

Q & A with Wendy Wood

In your opinion, what do you think will be the next big thing in furniture and interior design trends for next season? Lots of colour and brights. I think organic fabrics such as linen, cotton and wool will be huge. The demand for more sustainable materials is sure to make its impact on interior design trends as well. I also think the indoor/outdoor living trend will continue to be popular. There’s a big movement towards entertaining and having more living space within the home. As a result living areas are extending out into gardens and creating al fresco spaces. I think people’s interest in this trend will be around for quite some time.

Where is Moran going in the future?

Full steam ahead! Moran has always been known for its more classical furniture designs; but we do such a vast variety of contemporary models as well. Having said that; Moran really are the absolute masters at creating timeless pieces that can cross the boundaries between both classic and modern. We really do have something for everyone.
